RUNNER SAFETY Medical Personnel and Aid Stations There are 12 medical aid stations along the marathon course and a medical field station at the finish. They are marked on the map with a first aid symbol. For medical assistance along the course, look for personnel in the red shirts, they will be available to assist you.

Marathon Personnel Communication personnel and head course marshals will have radios and phones to contact emergency personnel quickly. All official marathon committee members will also be available. Look for the people in the orange-colored shirts.

Police Officers Officers will be located at all major intersections where traffic intersects the course. They will also be patrolling the course. Please keep in mind this is not a closed course. You must still follow the rules of the road.

Volunteers There are nearly 1,000 volunteers on marathon weekend. Most are not associated with the event except for one weekend a year, so understand that they may not have the answers to all of your questions. However, in an emergency, do not hesitate to go to them for assistance as they should know how to get proper help quickly. Volunteers for the marathon can be identified in the bright orange colored shirts.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT SAFETY AND SECURITY We are taking as many precautionary steps as we can to keep the Mankato Marathon safe for everyone involved. With that, we have a couple of important things for you the participants to note: 1. ALL UNNATTENDED BAGS left anywhere on the grounds will be confiscated. 2. The Runner Bag Drop will be heavily monitored and all Mayo Clinic Health System bags used for the Runner Bag drop are subject to search. 3. ONLY Mayo Clinic Health System bags which participants receive at packet pickup will be allowed into the Runner Bag Drop. 4. The Runner Bag Drop is ONLY for 10K, Half, Relay and Full Marathon participants. We are looking forward to a safe event for everyone!

CLOTHING DROP ZONES The Mankato Marathon has partnered with River Valley Running to provide clothing drop zones at the first two water stops on the full and half marathon routes. Clothing items will be collected from the course and brought to River Valley Running where runners will have until 11/4/2018 to claim their items. All items that go unclaimed will be laundered and donated. We still recommend that any clothing you want returned to you at the end of the race be brought to bag drop, as we do not accept responsibility for loss or theft.

CHARITY PROGRAMS In 2018, the Mankato Marathon is striving to give back to the community that has so generously supported our races. This year, five charities including Project for Teens, Open Door Health Center, Committee Against Domestic Abuse, Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota and LiveSTRONG at the YMCA, have been chosen. In addition to having champion runners raising donations, the five programs have potential to raise additional dollars through registrations from runners.

Project for Teens

Project for Teens is a volunteer service learning program that involves approximately 130 student leaders grades 10-12 from five Greater Mankato area high schools. Mankato East, West and Loyola Schools are long-time members and we are so excited to welcome St. Peter High School and Lake Crystal High School to the P4T Crew this year. Once trained, peer leaders share messages that promote healthy decision-making with fifth through eighth grade students (4,000 projected for the 2017-2018 school year) across the Mankato and St. Peter / Lake Crystal School Districts (Dakota Meadows, Franklin, Garfield, Fitzgerald, Prairie Winds, North Intermediate, St. Peter High School and Lake Crystal Secondary) through various methods of teaching, including small group discussions, skits and role-playing. The goal is to promote health and responsible decision-making among younger age peers on topics like bullying, social media, sexual health and relationships. Runners: Tim Hardy, Shea Roehrkasse, Matt DuRose, Tony Stadtherr

Open Door Health Center

Open Door Health Center has been serving the greater Mankato area for 20 years and continues to provide quality integrated medical, dental, and behavioral health care. ODHC serves all people regardless of income or type of insurance. Open Door will see approximately 12,000 unique patients in 2018. This is an increase of more than 30% in the past three years. In addition to healthcare, services include free legal help, assistance with insurance enrollment, and referral to resources for basic living needs (food, shelter, safety). Our vision is to provide quality affordable care throughout Southern Minnesota. Open Door currently has clinics in Mankato, Clarkfield, and Jordan. Open Door Health Center is a federally qualified health center. All medical, dental, and behavioral health services are funded in part through grants from federal and state agencies. In addition to grants and revenue from patient services, Open Door is funded by donations from generous individuals and corporations concerned about the health of our communities. Runners: Chris Mish, Jeni Kolstad, Damaris Salazar, Samantha Frederick

Committee Against Domestic Abuse

The Committee Against Domestic Abuse, Inc. is a non-profit victim’s advocacy and emergency shelter organization based in Mankato, Minnesota. It has been engaged in its mission to provide shelter, advocacy, and education services for 39 years. The shelter program provides emergency housing to female survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their children. Twenty-four hour advocacy and supportive services are provided in the shelter as well as through community-based victim service programs serving Blue Earth, Nicollet, Brown, Waseca, Watonwan, Faribault, Le Sueur and Sibley counties located in South-Central Minnesota. CADA also houses a supervised parenting time program where children are able to visit their noncustodial parents in a safe, neutral environment. Runners: Jason Mack, Brittany Wojtowicz, Andrew Boyer-Kern, Kirby Hurd

Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota

The Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota is full of opportunities for discovery, development, and hands-on play. The Museum features exhibits, activities, and spaces to engage all ages. From the Betsy Tacy-inspired Play Porch to the mind-inspiring attractions of the Two Level Makers Space, and with a towering Mankato Clinic Tree of Forts Climber so tall that it burst through the roof, there’s plenty to do and see -- all within a safe, inviting, and comfortable space. Runners: Rachael Hanel, Mike Drash, Jennifer Heimer, Kevin Newman

LiveSTRONG at the YMCA

LiveSTRONG at the YMCA is a twelve-week, small group program designed for adult cancer survivors. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA fulfills the important need of supporting the increasing number of cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to attempt to return to their life and create their “new normal.” Runners: Mary Guentzel, Terri Prange, Kerri Ambrose, Brian Stark 27

SPORT PSYCH TEAM The Center for Sport and Performance Psychology with Minnesota State University, Mankato leads a group of trained professionals who are mental performance consultants who provide participants with mental strategies and mental toughness tips to help runners reach their potential. Team members will be providing strategies to runners at the Expo, at the start of the race, and biking with runners (Psychs on Bikes). You will feel more mentally prepared, confident, and ready to reach your best. Look for people in matching yellow shirts that say “Sport Psych Team.”

CHEER TEAMS CHEER TEAMS WILL CHEER YOU RIGHT THROUGH THE FINISH LINE There will be several cheer teams strategically placed along the half marathon and full marathon courses this year. There will be so many smiling faces you will not have a chance to “hit the wall!” Cheer Teams are meant to motivate and inspire runners with cheers, music, signs and encouraging words.

TIPS FOR SPECTATORS Make the Most of Your Marathon Weekend There are activities throughout marathon weekend for athletes, friends, and families to enjoy together. But when the horn blows Sunday morning, you only have a few hours to find each other along the course and at the finish line. The easiest way to ensure you and your friends see each other is to plan ahead. Here is some advice for everyone on marathon day.

On the Course • Map out where you will be ahead of time. Check out the great viewing spots on page 30. • Know what each other will be wearing, or carry a sign or balloons. Sometimes it’s easier for runners to spot spectators than the other way around. • Pick a side. Communicate where you will be and watch from the same side of the road. This will help runners see and find you. • Plan for traffic. Allow extra time to get from one viewing spot to another. Get there early and don’t leave if you do not see someone right away. Your friend may be having a really good day or a tough one. • Cheer on the other runners too. It will mean a lot to them! Courtesy of Twin Cities Marathon Spectator Guide

FAVORITE CHEERS Clap, shout and show your support for participants-it’s always welcome. Save the “You’re almost there!” cheer until the very end—a few miles is still a long way for someone who has been running for hours. Here are some favorites. • Stay relaxed! • Keep smiling! • Keep it up! • You’re looking awesome! • Welcome to Mankato! (when appropriate) • Running smooth! • Way to go! • You can do it! • You rock! • Way to wheel! • Stay strong! • Way to run! • Call out something unique about a runner • One stride at a time! • Way to focus! (bib#, the color or a logo on their shirt, etc) In addition to shouting your support, bring along cowbells, tambourines, thunder sticks or homemade signs. Many cheering supplies are available from sponsors at the Expo. Please be respectful of private and public property and dispose of your cheering materials appropriately. Courtesy of Twin Cities Marathon Spectator Guide
