ith the season upon us, we encourage you to Shop Local! The Shop Local movement is growing and growing and there is no better way to show support for your community; the business owners, entrepreneurs, artists and service providers that work hard every day to make our local cities vibrant, exciting and fun. We hope this year each person can purchase one extra thing from a locally based business. When you do that, the money stays here. When money stays here and that local business owner spends that money on something they need in our community and so on and so on. There is no better way to support your community than by supporting your local businesses. Please enjoy some of our locally written stories here as well! Learn all about the local impact of the Shop Local movement, the Kiwanis lights that are taking place in Sibley Park again this year and some very local holiday photos from the Free Press archives. We hope you all enjoy the season and meet some of your local business owners along the way.

Small Business Saturday by Cliff Coy

T

hanksgiving is upon us and after we stuff our bellies with all the turkey and mashed potatoes we can possibly muster, we participate in a fairly new tradition of waking up well before dawn to stand in lines at large retail stores in hopes of getting some holiday shopping done and hopefully not getting crushed in the process. But another holiday tradition has emerged in recent years to help local communities support themselves, this is called Small Business Saturday. The basic premise is that the more you shop at local businesses that are owned by local citizens, the more money you will put into your local community. “Shop Small is something that is put on nationally by American Express

and they are the ones that took the initiative to doing the shopping small in conjunction to Black Friday,” said Heather Fischer, owner and operator of Salvage Sisters on Riverfront Drive. “It’s always Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Shop Small Saturday. In Mankato we are in our third year of an organized Shop Small in the City Center.” Three years ago Heather came up with an idea to band together with local businesses for Small Business Saturday in order to draw a crowd in and together they built a sort of passport. Each business taking part puts together a giveaway basket from their store and the customers get it stamped at every business that they visit. After the customers reach ten stamps they can enter a raffle to win one of the many gift baskets. “There are a little over forty businesses participating this year, which is a record amount,” said Heather. “Shop Small can be done by any business, but we as a group have organized a shopping day for customers.”

8 million jobs

have been created since 1990 by small businesses.

1 million

Small Business Saturday tweets are expected on Twitter this holiday season.

The shops are all open per their business hours and around the first 20 customers to come to each store get a canvas tote with some swag in it. A lot of the businesses will be having sales and discounts. Some stores will also have giveaways of their own other than the giveaway basket for the passport. “The small businesses are the life blood of our downtown,” said Megan Flanagan, the Director of the City Center Partnership. “In order to have a vibrant downtown that people want to come and spend time in, one of the things people look for are those unique local stores. The shops that you aren’t going not find somewhere else. So this is a great opportunity for them to let people know that they are out there and for people to come out and support these businesses. Because if these businesses weren’t in our city center we wouldn’t be nearly as vibrant as it is.” Every year Small Business Saturday is getting bigger and there are more and more businesses getting interested in the program. People are also becoming more aware of the concept behind Shop Small Saturday and it’s becoming more of a tradition.

49% more

small businesses have been created since 1982.

In 2015 95 million people went out to shop small on Small Business Saturday and spending on the holiday reached $16.2 billion last year which is a 14% increase over 2014. “It’s always fun to find a new store and something that is a little unusual,” said Megan. “I know I like to give gifts that people don’t anticipate getting or haven’t seen before. But it comes down to if we want to have these businesses in our downtown and making our downtown as great as it can be, we need to be supporting them.” To find out more information you can visit www.citycentermankato. com which will have all of the information on hours, what raffle prizes will be offered, the sales and specials that the stores will be running that day and of course it will list all of the stores that will be involved in the day. You can also visit the City Center Mankato Facebook page and view the event for Small Business Saturday.

s i n a w i K s t h g i L Story by Cliff Coy

T

he Kiwanis Light Show was started in November of 2012 and has been running every year since. It has started every year the day after Thanksgiving and runs all the way up till December 31st. New additions last year were an Old Man Winter animated display, a much taller center tree, an expanded “dancing lights” area and a three-night live ice sculpting event presented by CHS that culminated with the creation of a lighted sculpture of Old Man Winter. Even more lighted trees and additional displays were also new to the event. The free event is held each year in Sibley Park in Mankato, MN. Cash and food donations are accepted each night and are distributed to local food shelters in the area. • The event is completely volunteer-driven and last year it lasted 35 nights, or a total of 150+ hours of operation. • Over 180,000 people attended the free event in 2015 (165,000 in 2014), which included greatly increased walking traffic due to the extremely mild temperatures. 16 • Shop Local

• $60,000 will be donated back to the non-profit groups that assisted with set-up, tear-down and evening volunteer help during the event. ($50,000 in 2014, $40,000 in 2013 and $30,000 in 2012). Remaining proceeds will go to help offset expenses and to improve the event in future years. • 94 non-profit groups participated, providing 10,700 volunteer hours with 1,850 volunteers participating. Funds will be dispersed to the non-profit participants based on a formula that includes volunteer assistance with set-up, tear-down and nightly operations. Participating nonprofit groups also received a tree that they could decorate along the walking path. • 56 Greater Mankato businesses participated as cash sponsors, showing continued support for the annual event • An additional 33 businesses participated as in-kind sponsors • 14 tons of food was collected by 15 area food shelves

• The opening night parade was presented by the Mankato Area Derby Girls. The winner of the $500 float contest was Girl Scout Troop 34494. • Over 1.25 million energy-efficient LED lights glowed brightly throughout the event, with the electricity costing less than $50 a night! • Thirty six area restaurants donated food to help feed the volunteers during the event, as well as during set-up and tear-down • Four live reindeer were on display for the duration of the event. • For the second year visitors were encouraged to vote on their favorite nonprofit tree this year. Winners were; • 1st place – North Mankato Fireman’s Relief Association received a $300 prize • 2nd Place – LEEP received a $150 prize

• 3rd Place –One Bright Star received a $50 prize • Over 4,000 children visited Santa and each received a free book courtesy of Capstone • The opening parade and lighting ceremony for the 2016 Kiwanis Holiday Lights season will be November 25, 2016. “Our goal is to brighten everything up for everybody during the winter time and be able to give back to the community,” said Scott Wojcik, the President of the Kiwanis Holiday Lights program. “It started off as an event where we just put up some Christmas lights and it has morphed into this large community event. We do it because we love it.” Non-profit organizations that provided the required number of volunteer hours will be invited to participate again in 2016. There is a waiting list for additional non-profits. Interested participants should send an email to volunteer@kiwanisholidaylights.com to be considered for future years. Shop Local • 17

Leslie Johnson, 9, flashes a big Christmas smile in Immanuel hospital where he is recovering from bruises sustained when he fell 36 feet down a straight silo chute to a cement floor at his farm home near Lake Crystal Monday morning. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Johnson who term his survival “A Christmas miracle.”

2

Here is one little girl who was at a temporary loss for words when she met Santa in Mankato Tuesday. Of course, when you’re only two years old, like Karen Olson here, meeting Santa face to face is a pretty breath-taking experience. Karen recovered enough in to tell the gent that he could bring her a “dolly” for Christmas. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reginald Olson, 414 Belmont Drive.

3

A crepe paper Christmas tree made by a firstgrade class from Roosevelt school in Mankato typified the spirit of sharing and giving that made Christmas so much better than a Kasato family had expected. The Kenneth Johnson’s have been showered with gifts of all kinds since fire destroyed their belongings December 15. In temporary living quarters in Kasota Mrs. Johnson holds Jimmy, three, and Karen, four. The family spent Christmas eve in Boyd, Minnesota with relatives. The children were left there and Mr. and Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Johnson’s brother-in-law returned to Kasota today to begin repairing their burned house.

Sports cars had nothing on the one-horse open sleigh of grandma’s day. All wrapped up in a buffalo robe is Ken Ziegler of Mankato, route 3, shown demonstrating all of the flashy cutters in which the sports of 1900 would a-wooing go. This is the prize item in his slowly growing collection of oldtime conveyances which he restores as a hobby. He is also bringing back to life some of the time-worn transportation antiques owned by the Blue Earth County Historical society.

5

Mankato printer Bill Schuldt gets into his gear as he prepares to go out as Santa Claus. He’s in his twenty-fourth year on the reindeer circuit. Country schools are his principal ports of call and he enjoys every minute of it. It’s fun he admits, but the kids’ll throw you if you’re not on your toes.

December 23rd 1958 - “Cotton pickin’modern houses. They’re makin’ the fireplaces smaller every year. You’d think the house builders didn’t believe in me anymore. It’s jst too much for a man of my age to go wheezing down these skinny brick Santa traps. Oh for the old days when a chimney was a chimney. And these consarned curtain screens they’ve got in front of them now. It’s a wonder a man has a beard left. Jolly? Ho, Ho, Ho.

7 8

December 19th 1966 - Dolls are perennial favorite presents for daughters. Kari Sue checks out two versions of “Skipper,” little sister of the popular Barbie doll. December 24th 1964 – Three Blue Earth children look over a unique Christmas tree displayed at the Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church in Blue Earth.
