he Shop Local movement continues to be a great way that we can encourage, and remind, our community to keep their holiday shopping local. By keeping our dollars local we are supporting our family, friends and neighbors, which in turn helps our local economy thrive. According to the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA) 48% of your dollars are recirculated in the local economy when they are spent locally. Compare that to less than 14% that stays local when dollars are spent outside the market. This means that the more money we spend with our local businesses, the more money stays in our community as w whole. This is support for the arts, sponsorships for youth sports, support for city improvements and more. Enjoy this specially designed guide this holiday season to help you find some great deals from our own local businesses and how that money helps support this great community we all love.

O Christmas Tree
By Bryce O. Stenzel
4 • Shop Local
he “Christmas tree,” as it is popularly known has had a long history, before becoming the centerpiece of today’s modern holiday tradition. Ancient Egyptians used palm rushes to decorate their homes around the winter solstice (December 21-22 in the Northern Hemisphere). They believed that their sun god Ra got sick at this time of year, and the green plants they placed around would help restore Ra back to health. To the Egyptians, and other ancient cultures, plants that remained “ever green,” symbolized the triumph of life over death. They were also hung over doors or windows of houses to keep out illness, evil spirits and witches. In more northerly climates (Europe), pine boughs (or the entire tree) replaced the palm rushes. Ancient Gauls decorated their homes with evergreen branches. Vikings in Scandinavia believed that evergreens were the special plant of their sun god, Balder. As Christianity spread throughout central and northern Europe, the new religion incorporated some of these older cultural practices into itself. In medieval “Germany,” (there was no country of that name until 1871) apples were placed on evergreen trees (known as “Paradise Trees”) to represent the Garden of Eden. Not long after, other edible decorations were added, thus beginning the tradition of “Christmas ornaments.” As people of German ethnicity began emigrating to other locations, including the United States, they brought their cultural traditions with them. At first the idea of decorating a spruce, fir or other evergreen tree was considered foreign by many of those the German people settled among. Although Christmas trees first appeared among German settlers in Pennsylvania in 1747, the first publically displayed one didn’t appear
until the 1830s, and as late as the 1840s, the tradition was still viewed by many as “pagan.” It was Queen Victoria of Great Britain that gave the Christmas tree its popularity among non-German people of the United States as well as England. In 1848, Queen Victoria persuaded her German-born husband, Prince Albert to decorate a Christmas tree for the holiday season, based on the ones he had known from his childhood. The tree was featured in the fashionable, illustrated London News, and it created a sensation. Suddenly, every one of means on both sides of the Atlantic wanted to be in vogue by putting a Christmas tree in their home. At first, decorations were simple: fruit, nuts, cookies and other edibles in imitation of the ancient Paradise Trees. By 1870, German artisans had begun to import fancy, glass ornaments. In 1882, Edward Johnson, an assistant of Thomas Edison produced the first set of Christmas tree lights, replacing the older German tradition of using candles (some attribute this to Martin Luther). In 1889, the wife of President Benjamin Harrison lit the first White House Christmas tree, beginning the tradition of First Ladies doing the honors at the official lighting ceremony. By 1900, 1 in 5 American families had its own Christmas tree. Today, the live Christmas tree industry is a multi-billion dollar enterprise. They are grown in all 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii. About 24.5 million live Christmas trees were purchased in 2012, down from 30.8 million in 2011, according to the National Christmas Tree Association. The retail value of the live trees was more than $1.0 billion. Of those, 85 percent were pre-cut and 14 percent were harvested at cut-yourown enterprises. In the same year, 24 percent of Christmas trees were sold from cut-yourown tree farms and another 24 percent from chain stores. Significant percentages of Christmas trees were also sold from retail lots (15 percent), nonprofit groups (15 percent) and nursery/garden centers (11 percent). This does not even take into account all of the revenue generated from the sale of artificial trees. In the immediate Mankato area, live trees can be purchased from many of the big box retail stores in town. For a more do-it yourself shopping experience, the
Y’s Club of Mankato Christmas Tree Lot is located next to the McDonalds on Madison Avenue in Mankato. Proceeds from the Y’s Club Christmas tree sales are used to purchase YMCA youth equipment and fund scholarships to camp and special programs. The trees range from 5-feet to 10-feet tall and are balsam fir, fraser fir, white pine and scotch pine. The lot will be open until the trees on site are sold out, which tends to happen every year, so you don’t want to wait long before picking one out for your home. Other nearby locations are: Drummer’s Garden Center of Mankato, Guggisberg Tree Farm, and Hacker’s Tree Farm. Drummer’s Garden Center, located at 281 St. Andrews Drive, is open year-round. It supplies a full-range of landscape and garden products, houseplants, water gardens, gifts and professional landscape design, plus fresh Christmas trees and decor in season. Guggisberg Tree Farm is located at 17703 Grandview Road, near New Ulm. Its website states that it is a family run business that has been growing trees since 1995. Because a great deal of time is involved in planting young seedlings, growing and caring for Christmas trees, as well as harvesting them, it is hoped the customer will find the finest selection of Christmas trees available. Hacker’s Tree Farm is located at 45372 190th Street, near Sleepy Eye. This family operated business was started in 1981, and was borne out of a personal tragedy—the loss of owners, Dan and Lynn Hacker’s son. Lynn’s father suggested they sell some of his trees from the family farm in Wisconsin to keep themselves occupied. Lynn’s father brought out 300 trees; Dan and Lynn sold them all! Later they found out that these trees were White Spruce, which is a beautiful tree, but when customers took it in their homes, it lost its needles. The next year to make right with our customers, they had to sell trees again. Dan and Lynn Hacker replaced all the trees for their customers with different varieties. That is how their business of selling and raising Christmas trees began. Shop Local • 5

D
HOMELESSNESS
riving around the Greater Mankato Area and looking out the window of your car, you see a much different site than if you would be doing the same thing in New York or Los Angeles, or really any other big city in the world. It would seem that we are lacking something that the people who live in those cities have grown numb to, or are we? Just because we don’t see it in the same manner, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Youth homelessness is just as prevalent here as it is anywhere else, it just looks different. We in the River Valley don’t typically have kids holding up cardboard signs asking for help, or standing and sleeping on a street corner day in and day out. What we do have, are kids who are couch hopping, sleeping at their friends’ houses for as long as they can before they need to find another place to stay. 18 • Shop Local
This is where The Reach Youth Drop-In Center comes into play. In February of 2011 it was found that the area had a need for a physical location that could help young people between the ages sixteen and twenty-four who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. “Homelessness looks a lot different in our area because it is rural,” said Tasha Moulton, the Program Manager at The Reach Youth Drop-In Center in Mankato. “So we don’t necessarily have those street kids where you can visualize that. A lot of the kids here in the community are couch hopping and so we try to connect with them to provide services.” The Drop-In Center is a program run through Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota. Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota has been around for over 150 years, but in order to combat the problem of youth
homelessness, they needed to do a community study to see if there was a need here. “They didn’t want to open up a building and find out there were no youth to be served here, said Moulton. “Obviously there are youth to be served here. Homeless youth are in every community, but they had some people from the city council that looked into the need in the community and it was decided that we really needed a place. So that’s when we opened our doors in February of 2011.” The staff at The Drop-In Center focus on doing outreach, going to kids that identified themselves as homeless. Often times it is people working in the school system that let staff at the center know if they had someone in need. When the drop in center was opened it was nice because it is a physical place that kids can come to so they can meet the staff, get something to eat, or even rest for a while. “What we try to do is discuss the basic needs first. Find out if they are tired, if they are hungry, if they need a shower, do they need to take a nap or rest,” said Moulton. “Once we address those basic needs we can find out what their situation is. We don’t have any youth shelters here in Mankato, we have the Salvation Army during the colder months, that’s for men 18 and older, but there is really nothing for our girls and our families.” This year the Drop-In Center will have a string of churches that are going to open up this year so they will have a rotating schedule so people can have a place to stay. Otherwise prior to that, there was no place youth could stay. They would just try to brain storm with the youth to find out if they had a friend whose parents would let them stay with them, or perhaps they had a teacher or a counselor or someone that they would feel safe with. Sometimes they would even have to find out if there was someone out of state that they would be able to live with. “Really we are just the navigators for them and trying to help them out to figure out where the safest places are to stay,” said Moulton. “A lot of the kids that we work with are going to school, they want to continue going to school, they want to graduate, so we do the best we can to try to support them with that. We work very closely with the school system, the social workers and councilors are all great. The Mankato school district has been just awesome with getting things up to speed with homelessness and supporting kids who are trying to go to school.” When you start peeling back the layers of youth homelessness you will find that it’s very
complex. It’s sometimes a result of something that has been building up or there are things going on inside the home that it’s not safe. There might be chemical dependency issues in the home, their parents or care givers might be using and it’s not safe. They might be experiencing abuse and neglect. “Kids are pretty resilient and even if there is violence in the home, they will stay there because that is what they know,” said Moulton. “They love their parents and caregivers no matter what kind of situation they are coming from, it’s when it starts to get unsafe and they aren’t quite sure. Very rarely do we have a kid that runs away because they don’t want to listen to the rules at home.” The main goal at the Drop-In Center is building relationships. So from the very moment that the staff meets a student or a young person who is facing these challenges, they start to build a relationship. “We never come at it with things that we expect them to do, we want them to identify the things that they want to accomplish,” said Moulton. “What are some of their goals, so we will sit down with them and discuss what they are working on and what they want to accomplish. If it’s going to school, we give them the steps. And sometimes the steps include that they need to show up for school every day and then you get into transportation issues, so we look at some resources that are available.” When it comes down to it, the important thing for the staff at The Drop-In Center is always about getting to the core reason why the youth can’t attend school or find gainful employment. There are many different resources and organizations in the Mankato Area that can help these affected youths, like the Minnesota Valley Action Council (MVAC) that are really good at career development, and that is what the Drop-In Center really does for these kids. They provide a bridge to get them from the situation they are currently in, to reaching their highest potential. “What I love about my staff here is that we just genuinely want these youths to succeed. We have to be careful in defining their success in what we think it should be, but what they think their success should be,” said Moulton. “We have a lot of very talented young people that could easily go through a four-year college, but that’s just not something that they want to do. Encouraging it, absolutely! And letting them know that they can do that, but also just supporting them in whatever it is they want to do.” Shop Local • 19
