Each year during the Fall Tour of Homes attendees place their votes for the home that leaves the greatest impression. The chosen builder is awarded the People's Choice Award at the MRBA October Meeting. The MRBA is proud to highlight our outstanding builders during our Tour of Homes and we look forward to the balloting for this year's People's Choice Award.
In addition, each fall nominations are taken for the MRBA Builder of the Year and Associate of the Year, honors bestowed upon a Builder Member and an Associate Member who demonstrate their dedication to the association through volunteer time, committee involvement and their commitment to moving the MRBA forward in its effort to support the area building industry. We also recognize our Rising Star, a member for less than 3 years, who has quickly gone the extra mile for the MRBA even as a newer member. Your $5 ticket is your invitation to enjoy all 11 homes on Tour and can be purchased at any of the homes you start your day. We are pleased the MRBA Fall Tour of Homes continues to be enjoyed by the Mankato area community. It’s a great way to choose a new home, select a home builder and to see what’s new in styles, finishes, materials, products and even colors for your own home. Our guidebook will easily lead you to each of the homes, including a full area map and detailed directions with each of the home descriptions. The list could continue when describing Lloyd Lumber’s core principles. “We’re dedicated to our customers and employees,” says owner Mike Bertrand. “We realize that success isn’t only measured by numbers or financial statements. It’s also measured by our customer loyalty and satisfaction and our employee loyalty and satisfaction.” Celebrating just over 70 years in business, Lloyd Lumber Co. knows a little about long-standing relationships and customer service. Founded in 1946 by Robert Lloyd, Lloyd Lumber has been a full-service, quality lumber yard from its beginnings along Park Lane (now Riverfront drive) in Mankato Alden “Bud” Bertrand joined Lloyd Lumber in 1947, serving in many positions from truck driver and clerk to drafting and manager, and eventually president. In 1984 Bud bought Lloyd Lumber from Bob Lloyd. By that time the 2nd generation of Bertrands had joined the company as Lloyd Lumber’s truss manufacturing operation in upper north Mankato was managed by Barry Bertrand and the retail lumberyard across from West High School was managed by Mike Bertrand. Lloyd Lumber consolidated the company in 1989 to its current location in North Mankato. Since then there has 16 • Fall Tour of Homes
been numerous expansions and remodels as the company has grown and diversified over the years. Bud owned the company until his death in 1993 and Barry managed the truss plant until his untimely passing in 2004. Bud’s wife Kathleen and Mike worked together to ensure the company’s continued success and Kathleen worked there until she passed at the age of 89 years young. The feeling of family and loyalty isn’t only inclusive if Bertrand happens to be your last name. The Bertrands view their employees as part of their family. Of the company’s approximately 50 current employees, the majority have been with the Lloyd Lumber for more than 15 years. And, more than 90% of all the employees have been promoted within the company. “We have an unbelievably good staff,” says Mike. “Our customers know every time they walk through the doors they can rely on the expertise of our employees and quality service.” Along with the full-service lumber yard, homeowners will find everything they need for their home projects. From hardware and tools to paint and plumbing supplies their store has it all. “Our core business is the contractors, but homeowners rely on our service and knowledge, as well.” In addition, Lloyd Lumber has been drafting home designs from its beginnings. “It’s fun to realize there’s 70-years’

Speaking of diversifying … Lloyd Truss Systems, a subsidiary of Lloyd Lumber Co., began in the early 1960s with a small staff of five employees in Lehillier (South Bend Township). Truss designs were originally hand drawn. When the demand for trusses grew so did the company. In 1976 Lloyd Truss moved to its current North Mankato location and the staff has grown to 25 employees during the busy summer season. Lloyd Truss Systems is a wholesale operation that services lumber dealers in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa and supplies both floor and roof trusses for some of the most complex homes, agricultural buildings and commercial projects in the area. With their customers’ needs at the forefront, Lloyd Lumber expanded again in 1998 with the addition of Just Ask Rental. “We wanted to provide our customers the convenience to rent the equipment they needed for their projects at the same place they purchase their supplies,” says Bertrand. From trenchers, skid loaders and generators to party equipment tables and chairs, Just Ask Rental has your needs covered. “We started renting our cart-away concrete mixers more than 15 years ago,”says Bertrand.“They’re a huge effort and time-saver compared to hand mixing concrete for smaller projects like walkways.” Along with their sense of family is their long-standing sense of community. Lloyd Lumber’s charitable and community involvement is a constant presence in the greater
Mankato area, whether through the United Way, Childrens Museum, Relay for Life or Habitat for Humanity, to name just a few. So, what are the keys to longevity and success in this competitive lumber market? It’s crystal clear for Bertrand. “The thought then, as it is now was to build a company based on quality and service.
