Manufacturing in South Central Minnesota

In the nine county region of South Central Minnesota, 21.9% of all private sector jobs come from manufacturing. The total number of individuals employed in manufacturing in 2013 was 18,901 within 359 manufacturing establishments. Average weekly wages for manufacturing positions was $863, which is 17.5% higher than average weekly wages for all

industries. The manufacturing industry is a significant contributor to South Central regional economy by providing 22.4%, or $848,041,039 of all private sector payrolls in in South Central Minnesota.

In 2013, the most significant sectors within the manufacturing industry in regards to employment include food manufacturing with 4,843 employees and printing and related support activities which employed 3,759 individuals. Table 1 gives further detail on the breakdown of the manufacturing industry.

Careers in Manufacturing As figure two shows, average weekly wages in the manufacturing industry have been consistently higher than that of the total of all industries throughout the years. In 2000 average weekly wages in manufacturing were $101 higher than those of all industries, and this trend continued through 2013, which there was a $151 difference in manufacturing wages per week compared to all industries. Coloplast started with a caring nurse and her sister’s needs. In 1954, Danish nurse Elise Sorensen invented the rst self-supporting, single-use ostomy bag for her sister who had colon cancer. Learn about the opportunities available in these in-demand career elds: Engineering: Engineers continue to be essential to the manufacturing process. South Central College’s engineering program is designed to enable students to complete their rst two years of courses at SCC and then transfer to a four year university for their bachelor’s program in engineering. Mechatronics: Mechatronics is an ever growing eld that includes installing and maintaining computer-controlled systems, machinery and equipment. South Central College’s Mechatronics program provides comprehensive instruction and hands-on experience with Mechanical Systems (Mecha), Electronics (Tronics), Fluid Power, Automation and Robotics.

The Mechatronics program also offers a new option that enables you to get your degree anytime, anywhere by takeing online classes, while gaining hands on experience with a mechatronics lab kit, simulations and access to SCC’s remote eduction automation lab. Computer Integrated Machining: Computer Integrated Machining (CIM) utilizes analytics and automation in the precision manufacturing process, to take a product idea from design to nished product. South Central College’s CIM program includes a combination of classroom instruction, as well as hands-on application in machining labs that feature state-of the- art equipment. SpecSys Inc was founded in 1997. In its early stages the homebased consulting business primarily supported the design and engineering departments of machinery and equipment manufacturers. FastTRAC “Pathways to Manufacturing Careers” Course will prepare you for a rewarding career in manufacturing! Gain the confidence necessary for college and employment success! Brush up your reading, math and computer skills while exploring manufacturing careers available in the region. Participants will make connections at South Central College, area Workforce Centers and in the manufacturing industry as they develop a plan for their future in this FREE preparation course.

Eligibility Criteria You may qualify if you:  Will be at least 18 years old by December 15, 2014  Are legally eligible to work in the U.S.  Are unemployed or underemployed  Are not academically prepared for college (eligibility is determined by the Test of Adult Basic Education)  Have a HS Diploma or GED complete by December 15, 2014

Requirements To participate, students must:  Call us to complete TABE testing and an intake interview  Be physically able to perform manufacturing work (requires heavy lifting & standing for 8-12 hour shifts)  Commit to attending every class and about 10 hours of homework per week
