LOCAL TIP
The destinations that you can reach in such a small area are incredible! Red Jacket Trestle Bridge, Rapidan Dam, Minneopa State Park and Waterfalls, Sakatah Trail, Seven Mile Creek park, Mount Kato, Red Jacket Trail, Sibley Park, not to mention so many great communities that surround Mankato! The River Valley itself is one of our greatest assets; you can challenge yourself with the hills that it provides, or stay up in the flats for some more steady miles, your choice! Come fall, the Valley provides us with some incredible views that come along with the colors changing. My favorite part of riding is getting others introduced to the sport and sharing my love for cycling. When I first started riding in the area, there were several people that took me out and showed me new routes to ride; I love to pass that gift on to others. Every week, there are multiple group rides that people consistently attend; many participants look forward to their favorite ride all week long. Whether you want to test out a simple 30-minute family ride, or test your strength on a 50+ mile road bike ride, there is a ride for you. There are also multiple mountain bike groups that meet up weekly. I always encourage people that come into the store to check out a group ride; there is no better way to meet and get to know people that are into cycling than on a ride together. There is something special sharing a ride with someone or discovering a new road when you are on a group ride. Lately, my favorite rides have been seeing how far my 3 year old can go and then throwing him in the Burley when he gets tired to finish the rest of the ride. He says his favorite place to ride is the teeter-totters at Kiwanis Recreation Area, and to “Nana and Papa’s house” following the new bike lanes! Brandon Knudsvig

area parks Area parks are attractions for the active and adventurous. As a community that provides opportunities to be active and adventurous year-round, we are proud to point out that many local parks are attractions by themselves.
Sibley Park
Nestled between the Minnesota and Blue Earth Rivers, Sibley Park is one of the oldest parks in Greater Mankato, once featuring a horse racing track, regional zoo, museum and clay tennis courts. Now featuring an agricultural theme, the park has been recognized as having one of the coolest playgrounds in the state by NewsCastic in 2015. A fitting petting zoo with farm animals goes along with that theme. Other park features include beautiful walking trails through the park and along the river, gorgeous flowers and stone gardens, and HealthBeat outdoor exercise equipment. In the winter, the park comes festively aglow with more than one million lights and dancing displays during the month-long Kiwanis Holiday Lights. Take a sled and delight in a large sledding hill for everyone to enjoy.
Riverfront Park
Riverfront Park has been recognized as one of Minnesota’s best outdoor music venues. It plays host to a variety of events and festivals for people to enjoy. The grand Lawn, amphitheater, canoe landing, trail head building, playground and public art are just some of the amenities to be enjoyed at the park. The Minnesota River Trail runs through the park and provides great views of the Minnesota River and the City Center.

Reconciliation Park
Native American culture and heritage can be seen all around this park. Reconciliation Park is the site of the largest mass execution in U.S. history where 38 Dakota Indians were hanged by the government. This was the result of trials during the U.S. Dakota Conflict of 1862. One of the largest features of the park is a buffalo statue, which Tom Miller sculpted from a 67-ton block of local Kasota limestone; it is surrounded by native flowers and prairie grasses. The buffalo symbolizes the spiritual survival of the Dakota People and honors the Dakota heritage of this area. The park is a site to reflect, meditate and remember.

With three active kids and a busy lifestyle, our family is always trying to squeeze in some outdoor fun when time allows. A newfound favorite of ours is driving through the “Bison Drive” at Minneopa State Park, where a herd of bison roam freely inside a 331-acre area. At the end of the drive, the old Seppmann mill is a fun place to get out and walk around (taking advantage of the amazing view overlooking the bison’s pasture and some trails back behind it to explore). A quick drive within the state park brings us over to Minneopa Falls where we can hike down to and around the falls...this is always a favorite for our kids! MSU Mankato Rock Wall
Wow! Zone
Go for a Climb
There are plenty of trails to hike including those at Seven Mile Creek and Minneopa State Park, but for a real climb, there is a great wall for that at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The largest rock wall in Southern Minnesota, the Indoor Climbing Center at MSU, Mankato provides an exhilarating experience for the entire family. The wall is casted from real rock located in Minnesota and Wisconsin and provides amazingly realistic texture, allowing climbers to use natural features and attached handholds to create incredibly versatile routes from beginners to veteran climbers. Each climb can be a unique one on the way to the 35-foot pinnacle.
Bounce Around at Bounce Town
Head to Bounce Town to let your bouncers have fun while getting some exercise in the indoor inflatable play center. There are a variety of inflatables including bouncers, obstacle courses and slides. The little ones up to 40" will have fun in Wee Town.

We also enjoy spending time at the Kiwanis Recreation Area where our dog can run around and play within the dog park, and we can hike on the paved or wood chipped trails surrounding the area. On hot days, we usually find ourselves at the pool at Spring Lake Park or inside All Seasons Arena cooling off at an open skate session. On top of all of these fun spots to hang out, our kids are also always asking to go to either the Children's Museum of Southern Minnesota, the "ball pit" area at the Mankato Family YMCA, a movie at one of the local movie theaters or the mall.

In 1880, Mankato was the fourth largest city in Minnesota with a population of 5,500. Today, more than 50,000 people call Mankato and North Mankato home. In 1852, Parsons K. Johnson and Henry Jackson staked claims along these banks and founded the town of Mankato. The city was established on land purchased in a treaty between the U.S. government and the Dakota; the breaking of this treaty by the government lead to the U.S.-Dakota Conflict of 1862. North Mankato, which sits just across the river, was established in 1898. The first bridge between North Mankato and Mankato was the Veteran’s memorial Bridge, constructed in 1880. The bridge represented an interdependence and partnership between the cities that continues. Today, many memorials and buildings exist to commemorate the diverse and important history that has shaped the Greater Mankato area. Mankato and North Mankato have many historical attractions that are must-sees for visitors.

2017 Guide to Visiting & Living in Greater Mankato
Carrie Flanagan Family of 4
The Flanagan’s got game…Jerrel and I both grew up here in Mankato/North Mankato and have seen many changes over the years when it comes to sports. Both of us were active participants in youth sports and high school sports, and we have become very fond in sharing our enthusiasm of sports with our two boys, Keiryn (13) and Liam (9). We have been very fortunate to live near the Minnesota State University, Mankato Campus and take advantage of many of the sports contests that happen on a frequent basis. You can find us tailgating and watching Maverick Football at Blakeslee Stadium, walking to MSU, Mankato’s baseball complex to catch a game or even see us at Taylor Center taking in some basketball. We even hang out at the Verizon Wireless Center to watch Maverick Hockey. While MSU is near and dear to our hearts (being that we are both alumni: Jerrel ’95 and myself ’98), baseball is our most common interest. Both of our boys play baseball all summer and into the fall. Mankato has been very lucky to gain Rosa Parks Community Fields, which is managed and maintained by the City of Mankato and Mankato Area Youth Baseball Association. It is a great addition for in-house baseball during the week and traveling baseball on the weekends. While most say that we are crazy busy, I can attest we do, in fact, live at ball fields all summer long. As if running in two directions with our own boys isn’t enough, we are a host family for the Mankato MoonDogs. We open our home to a player who soon becomes part of our family. This also means that you can find us at The Frank, cheering on our “summer son” when we are not at Keiryn’s and Liam’s games. While we continue to cheer on our hometown teams, it’s not always about the game; it’s about spending time Carrie, Liam, Keiryn, Jerrel as a family.

Morning Radio Host on Minnesota 93 I've been lucky to watch the Greater Mankato Area grow over the past 20 years! Even more of a blessing is to be a part of this great expanding community through my work with Radio Mankato. My job helps me keep a finger on the pulse of what is happening where we live. I've seen the expansion and growth of new venues bringing in national and global acts of all kinds. From Riverfront Park to the newest addition of the Verizon Event Center, there always seems to be something to experience and the perfect type of venue to host it! Like many others that I work with, Ribfest is a major part of our summer. With concerts and barbeque, it's four days of fun! Watching it grow from its first year as a small event in a parking lot to now packing Riverfront Park with people has been very exciting. The Mankato area has so many unique places to socialize and catch live music now. You may find yourself at a local bar, on the lawn of the Intergovernmental Center or Jackson Park in the summer, at one of our beautiful local wineries or at Mankato Brewery, sipping on locallyproduced beverages. It all ties back to a great community, and the best thing is: it is still growing! I can't wait to watch the next 20 years!

Mankato tradition, served up by the area’s high schools and college teams, and each summer - the Mankato MoonDogs baseball team and Minnesota Vikings Training Camp. The Riverfront Park Amphitheater is another popular summer destination, hosting concerts and festivals, including the annual RibFest. Throughout the year, the Verizon Wireless Center, with 5,000 seats and additional meeting spaces, provides a venue not only for Minnesota State University, Mankato Division I hockey, but also concerts, shows and conventions. This year smartasset.com added Greater Mankato to their list of “TOP 10” Hockey Towns in America! The addition of the Performing Arts Center onto the east end of the Verizon Wireless Center is a beautiful new attraction and home of our own Mankato Symphony Orchestra.
2017 Guide to Visiting & Living in Greater Mankato
Arts & Culture Greater Mankato boasts a thriving arts community, with five public art galleries, three dance companies, four community choruses, the symphony orchestra and theatre group. In addition, area colleges offer outstanding, theater, music, dance, and visual and written arts programs. While strolling around the City Center, art is all around you with the annual CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour. A new City Center art attraction in 2016 is the Mni Mural, Mankato’s Flood Wall Mural. “Mni” means “water” in the Dakota language. The mural reminds the community that this is a river town. There’s been a resurgence in recreational use of the rivers and greater awareness of environmental concerns regarding the health of Minnesota water systems; this painting celebrates that.

GreenSeam is not simply a place; GreenSeam is also a state of mind and being. We have a real and visceral connection to the land we stand on. We are connected to all the people and enterprises that support, supply and stand with us. We have a heritage that links us the with hardworking past generations whose shoulders we stand upon. GreenSeam innovation is forward-thinking and historical. Long before there was any concept of a place called “The GreenSeam,” people of this area were innovating. Advances in farming techniques, developments in production, equipment and technological breakthroughs all had origins in the minds of those inhabitating this GreenSeam. A continuum of innovation.

On the Young Professionals/talent page, GMG would like to highlight all the fun activities they do in addition to their professional development. We’d like to use at least four photos if possible, to show the variety. For some time now, business and community leaders in the Greater Mankato region have understood how fortunate we are to have an incredible resource that can be a key economic success factor for our region: our people, or our “talent.” We have been focusing on how to attract, develop and retain the talented workforce that we need today and into the future.
