Tales From the City Episode 18: The plan

1

Jonaki's Headquarters Hey Friends! August is a funny month. You never know whether it’s going to be sunny or rainy tomorrow. Did you know that rainbows are caused by light rays being bent through raindrops? Thinking about that put us in the mood for rainbows, and that’s why we have some colourful crafts and

experiments for you to try this week. Why not make your flowers bloom in a rainbow of different colours? Or make some bright paper lamps? Check out what Dr Meow has in store for you. Are you having a fun time being back at school? Write to us at treehouse@ dhakatribune.com and let us know.

How often do we help someone in trouble? These two are an example we can learn a lot from. Nasir and Jalal are best friends. Their friendship started with a little act of kindness by Jalal. Little Nasir was getting beaten up by a random stranger he had asked money from.

Jalal intervened and he begged the guy to stop. The stranger came back to his senses after Jalal’s plea to stop. He felt really guilty and apologised and walked off. Nasir was really shaken up. But he was really grateful to Jalal for saving him. To this day they are brothers in arms. Nobi Rahman

Dr Meow's Lab PET TIPS

3 safety tips for pets Whether it’s a cat or a dog, you should always focus on making your home pet friendly for your four-legged friends. Secure your home before it’s too late. The following tips should do the trick!

diy

bigstock

Origami paper lanterns

You’ll need • An origami book (you’ll find them at Boi Bichitra • Origami paper

Clean If you are serious about bringing in a pet, then you should clean everything in your house and keep it clean for at least 4 days or more until you have to clean it again. If your pet makes a mess, clean it up straight away, before it’s too late.

Fun

Organise Keep your pet’s toys, brush and other items in one place. You wouldn’t want them to get mixed up with yours. If they are lying around elsewhere, guests might trip on them, and you would not want that to happen. Bathe Cats will need a shower, once every month. Dogs, on the other hand need a bath every time they get dirty. Follow this, and you’ll have a stench free home, and a healthy and happy pet. Rubab Nayeem Khan

animal facts

CHEETAHS • The cheetah is the fastest animal on Earth. • It can speed up to 113km/h from rest in just a few seconds.

Science

• The long black “tear lines” running from the inside of the cheetah’s eyes to its mouth protect its eyes from the harsh sunlight.

RAINBOW CARNATIONS!

Step 1 Start with a square origami paper with designs on both sides, coloured side down. Both diagonals. Make sure they crease well when you unfold.

• Cheetahs are the only big cats that cannot roar but purr. • Cheetahs have poor night vision.

Step 2 Fold one corner to the centre, and then repeat for the other 3 corners. Your origami paper will look like a kite now.

• They cannot climb trees. • Cheetahs originated over 4 million years ago and thus are one of the oldest big cat species in history.

Step 3 Flip the paper over.

sama e deen bigstock

Step 4 Now fold the bottom tip to the centre and then repeat the same thing for the other 3 tips. bigstock

Step 5 Flip it over again. Step 6 Fold the bottom right corner to the centre. Repeat for the other 3 corners. Step 7 Open the paper at the top. Pry open the paper, fold the flap to the top and away from you. Press the paper flat, and voila, your paper lantern is complete.

You will need • White carnations • Food colouring • Water • Scissors • Seven clear jars How To Put a few drops of each of the rainbow food colourings into the seven separate jars. Top the colours with water. Cut the carnation stems in a slanted way and put each flower into the different coloured solutions. Leave the flowers

in the jars for 8-10 hours and watch blooming rainbows! For best results, leave the flowers overnight. Explanation As water evaporates from the flowers, more water is pulled up through tiny tubes called xylem that run up the flower stem. The food colour particles diffuse with this water to all parts of the flower, especially the petals, giving the white carnations these amazing rainbow colours ! sama e deen

AXE RULE Here’s an animated series written by a kid. It is about a police officer who uses his axe as a weapon to fight evil. He sleeps only minutes a day and spends every night battling bad guys like Telescope Gun Cop and Doctor Stinkyhead. From Aliens to zombies, the police officer fights everyone. Anyone who threatens Axe Cop’s friend, or messes with the law automatically becomes an enemy. Although Axe Cop initially started as a web-comic, it went to become a novel and now an animated series. Although there is violence involved; the series is filled with amusing moments ready to capture your heart. rifat binte haider
