Quote of the week If I had to pick one thing to do for the rest of my life, it would be hitting the snooze button. I’m pretty confident I could do that forever.

Lingo of the week Faintastic So awesome you could faint. One fried to another Dude did you go to the concert last night? Yeah man, it was faintastic.

Editor’s note Dear Readers, Maybe it’s the pointless CGI smash-fest that Man of Steel turned out to be, or the threat of air strikes on Syria, or the fact that the weather’s gloomy, we’re in a dark mood at TMAG this week. When the Dhaka Pop Culture Expo (see our coverage on Page 11) happened, we decided to delve into darkness for a bit. This week, we’ve got a mixture of the heavy and the light. We’re talking about serious stuff like dysfunctional families (Page 2), cyber-bullies (Page 3), how to protect yourself from an attacker (Page 9), and even, the dangers of negative peer pressure (Page 7). We’ve also got cool super-villain rooms (Page 2), Dhaka’s favourite comic book outlet (Page 8), and the sound of evil. We’d like to thank all the awesome cosplayers who turned up at Dhaka Tribune to pose for us. We absolutely love it when readers participate. Send us your flash fiction, room photos and confessions to tmag@ dhakatribune.com, and check out our Tumblr page at tmagtribune. tumblr.com for writing prompts and more. Love from the TMAG desk

Your Life

Funk up your room

FYI

Muhahaha!

“I’m a Broken Family Boy!” A tree bears fruit only when its roots are strong. Quite similarly, we as offspring will only flourish when our family is standing rock solid behind us. Yet, what most of us take for granted, is a rare privilege to many others. With already erupting hormones and drastic psychological changes, a dysfunctional family life can hurt or traumatize a teen more than almost anything else will. The mind then, offers up a number of defence mechanisms by which the said teen can protect some semblance of their identity. Know the types well, so that you may help a fellow teen going through rough times

bigstock

Filled with a devil like energy and sinister thoughts is how villains are portrayed everywhere. But one thing often gets appreciated, their very unique personality and style of life. This week TMAG will reveal how an atrociouslook can give a perfect dimension to your room First priority

Before starting, picking your beloved super villain is a SUPREMELY difficult job. Selecting an era is equally important. Over 83 years, Batman’s Joker is dominating the arena of villains with tons of diverse representations. So select first, the era you want and then step forward to decor.

bigstock

The rebellious one

A rebel will usually be the first one to swim against the current. This is their way of controlling their lives when they cannot seem to control their family situation. Whether or not they are right or wrong is of no concern to them. They find solace in false bravado and a damn care attitude.

Forever young

Always joking around and trying to lighten up the mood, these teens try to distract others and themselves, almost like tricking their brains into happiness.

While this helps everyone for a short while, it keeps the teen in a sort of age limbo where they psychologically never quite grow up and use their jovial nature as an escape into a secret dream world where all is well.

Li’l Miss Perfect

The name explains it all. Usually occurring in girls; but not always, this emotional barrier deals with teens becoming dutiful to the point of self damage or discomfort. They try to keep their parents happy with them, usually at the expense of their own childhood.

Get started

There are so many choices to fill your room with Joker’s artefacts. “Why so serious” written on a black entrance door will offer total joker essence to your room. Any other Joker quote can be placed too. You have vibrant purples, greens, blood reds and darker shades as your options to colour your room. A wall mural would be the wisest option in terms of giving a total thematic look of Dark Knight. A whole sequence of scenes from the movie is better but you can put the joker alone as well, with a simple “city at night” look as a background. To make it more dramatic, you can add Batman’s black and yellow emblem on the opposite wall, the one that the character wore between the 1960s and 1990s. Beautify it with tiny lights so that when the lights go off, the symbol will emerge more clearly. One wall may contain Batman movie posters. And why not decorate the front wall with gigantic poker cards?

Finish up

To harmonise the theme with everything, place a bunch of poker card printed pillows over the purple coloured bed sheet. saudia afrin

TM AG TU ESDAY, SEPTE M B E R 3, 201 3

They are often seen as surrogate parents to their own siblings and grow up to be self dependent, albeit, emotionally distant, old souls.

Lost Hansel and Gretel

They keep it simple by choosing to avoid the dysfunctional place and people altogether. They usually stay out of the household and try to make other activities their escape route. However, these teens are usually embittered and burdened by their inner demons and are usually jumpy and nervous. munira fidai Saudia Afrin

The Monster in our Midst

Ishtiaq zabihullah doodled this when he was tired of studying law

In a world where we do everything but eat and sleep in cyber space, aka “the virtual world”, the risks faced are regenerated and made a million times more perilous than what we face in real life. While bullying generally stops at school, the monster known as “cyber bullying” has no end

If you are a classroom doodler, email your doodle to tmag@dhakatribune. com and see it in our weekly!

bigstock

We only have to look at a few sad cases, like the one of Amanda Todd’s, out of literally hundreds, to know how dire the consequences of this insensitive act can be. It starts with harmless pranks, the current trend being one of “fraping” and prank calls, and goes on to darker deeds like faking accounts, photo-shopping pictures and threats to make personal property public.

Identify

Identify potential cyber bullies early on. That girl who keeps poking your wrong side at tuition classes may be one. That guard at school who keeps eyeing you could be another. True, living in a city like Dhaka where harassment like this is as common as water, being too careful can give you the label of being paranoid. We are not telling you to become someone who is forever jumpy and overly suspicious, but being alert and on your toes around people who make you uncomfortable with their presence, can have its payoffs. Trust your instincts.

Prevent

What goes around, comes around. Never pass on bullying messages, however harmless they may seem. You never know how many haters you’ll create as a result of one, meaningless, Facebook “share.”

Everyone gets “fan mail” from fake admirers and pen pals. It is wise to block such people and delete their messages without reading. They are never wellwishers. Also, it is always a good thing to keep your private information private and not put it out for the public to see. This includes your phone numbers, home addresses and passwords. Limit your life happenings to chat logs with your friends. Feelings should only be shared with loved ones. A public status can make you a lot of “frenemies.”

Cure

As much as we try to prevent unfortunate occurrences from happening, many of us unwittingly fall prey. In such circumstances, do not beat yourself up. Read up about other cases like yours and more often than not, they will have expert advice on how to deal with it constructively. Avail counselling if necessary. Involve parents and open up to them before matters get worse. Support friends who are victims and you’ll always have a pack ready to return the favour if ever, God forbid, it’s your turn. Worse comes to worst, remember it’s still the virtual world that you can switch off for a while, if only to clear your head and ponder on what to do next.

FASHION FACE-OFF

Beauty Check

Wardrobe Check

You’s a Bad, Bad Girl! True, we are angels on the inside and we’d rather keep it that way. But no one said you can’t look like a villainess when the mood strikes! On an issue heavy with super villains of our times, what better than the Cat-woman look for our beauty section The eyes

Sharpen your kohl pencils so that it’s neither too blunt and nor too sharp. Use it on your eye lid the way you would a liquid liner. Follow the lid line with the pencil and stretch it longer than where your lid ends. Wing the tips and outline the end corners of the bottom lid lightly. Keep it a little messy.

The lips

First, use the best blood red that you have for this look. Apply liberally to your lips and then carefully blot it out. You will then need a natural-leaningblue lipstick to complete the look. Make sure to keep your gloss and shimmer away. The bad girl doesn’t like it glitzy!

The cheeks bigstock

This article is a tutorial to all Catwoman fans and those who want to deviate from their usual simple do’s and go for a flashier look. Read on to find out how you can achieve the “bad girl” look with a few artful strokes of your makeup wands.

Use your concealer to hide any spots and under eye bags you may have. Make sure you stay true to your skin colour but you can create the illusion of fairness by using a skin finish highlighter to the strong points of your face. Choose browns or other warm colours for the blush to give it the perfect, bad girl finish. Munira Fidai

Gangster

Lean For decades, the epitome of a genuine gangster was the character Vito Corleone from The Godfather. That film, and many others alike, glorified the lifestyle of a mobster. He transformed the criminal status into an anti-hero; it was cool to be bad

One of the most important things was obviously the look of a gangster. You could spot a made-man from around the corner. You knew it by what he wore and how he carried himself. Everyone respected and feared them, they ran the town. From history’s genuine gangsters to Hollywood’s portrayal, the style has become a signature and here’s how to pull it off.

Grooming

First thing is first. From the 1920s (Boardwalk Empire) and on, it was a clean cut look. Facial hair was at a minimal. A shaved face was a statement of intent. As for the hair up top, you could aim for a couple of different styles. Think Johnny Depp as John Dillinger in Public Enemies. The sides were trimmed down, and the top mop was combed back. Over the decades, it hadn’t changed. The same slicked back hair (De Niro in Casino), as well as the side part comb, remains as the go-to hairdo. The look had to be sharp and detailed. You can use pretty much any hair product to keep it in place. But don’t overdo it as there are products, like pomade, that will add the shine to your hair without going overboard.

Clothes

In the closet of a Mafioso, you’ll find tailored suits one after the other. What you need to aim for here are

bigstock

pinstripes (thinner the better) and fitted clothing. No bagginess allowed. The mafia took their clothing very seriously. Things needed to be fit and have the proper length. It had to be of a great quality but not too flashy. You want your presence to be known but not stand out like a sore thumb to the authorities. When you shop for the proper trousers and shirts, make sure they are basic in colours and stripes. A waistcoat is a great alternative and just as effective as a suit jacket. Let’s face it, in humid weather, you’re better off with a waistcoat. Again, keep the design and colours basic: black, grey, brown etc.

Accessories

The fedora was a must. Almost every gangster strolled around in a hat. Keep in mind, solid colour designed hats are the best. Whether it’s black, grey or brown, keeping things simple has the best effect. A necktie or a bowtie is also key to the old school gangster look. The only time you’d see a mobster without one is when he got his hands dirty to take care of business. The mafia had style because most of them were of Italian or Irish ancestry. But you don’t have to be Sicilian to carry a gangster look. You can be as menacing and stylish as The Goodfellas. Just don’t do anything illegal. Seriously. mahmood hossain

Street Car Talk

The Ultimate Gangster Rides From movies to real life, cars have always been the preferred status symbol for gangsters, lowlifes, and hoods. Even though they don’t have morality, it doesn’t mean they don’t love their cars. Cars are also the ticket for when the crime is done- the getting away or going away (for a long, long time). TAHSIN MOMIN takes you through some of TMAG’s favourites 1928 Cadillac Town Sedan

Being a good a listener has its perks, so clam up and lend an ear. It will be worth your while. When making decisions, it’s best to listen to your brain; the heart has a tendency of overlooking things. Gemini (May 21-Jun 20)

1969-87 Jaguar XJ

1932 Ford Model 18

If the Mark VII Jag is a car Michael Caine might have driven around East London in the underworld cinema in the past, then the XJ would definitely have been the ride of choice for Guy Ritchie outings. Sure, the 70’s and 80’s represented a dorky interval for the entire auto industry, and Jaguar’s build-quality lapses were never more evident, but the classic engineering and styling laid out by the XJ, along with the epic decline at the rear, helped to lead its way through a long road and onto the street-level world of thugs who’ll pay any price for a little class, as long as that price is not much.

The world’s first conveniently priced V-8, introduced by Ford in 1932, it was instantly memorialized by diverse scoundrels on the streets, especially by bank robbers John Dillinger and the Barrows, both of whom wrote to Henry Ford thanking him for his innovation from a criminal’s perspective. With its iconic “flathead” design, the Ford V-8 brought accessible power to low lives on the go. Another no-good, Baby Face Nelson, liked it so much, he would, along with Dillinger and the Barrows, wind up dying near one.

For a very long period of time it was considered that the W140 S-Class was the best car in the world and its psychological impact may have been eternal. This brickest of brick-house S-Classes, was a battle cruiser of excellence, doing favours for the elite class and as well as the criminals. From organized to disorganized crime, it was a must have ride for the growing band of gangsta rappers, the self-proclaimed criminals whose sales grew in direct proportion to how often they were run down by the media. Puff Daddy made this big-body Benz the ride of choice for young ones in the hood back in the ‘90s, and since these big old S-Classes rarely die of natural causes, the legacy continues.

Aries (Mar 21-Apr 19)

Taurus (Apr 20-May 20)

The official car of Al Capone and its miserable 90 horsepower seems feeble by today’s standards, especially when you factor in the mobster’s custombuilt additions of 3,000 pounds of steel and thick glass, which brought this early implement home, armouring in at almost 4,500 kilograms in its stocking feet. And it was smartly painted to blend in with the Caddies owned by the City of Chicago—because it sure wasn’t outrunning much.

Even though in the 60’s the Impala remained as an omnipresent icon, it did manage to attract both South Central gangbangers and drugdealing cartels, at a time when the main thing they had in common was a mutual interest for women with Kardashian-sized rears.

Welcome to the dar “Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.” Alfred Pennyworth

whether or not you follow international and regional affairs, just living in the city means you have to contend with the evils of crime and corruption. The kinds of evil that exist around us can perhaps best be understood via comic books and fantasy. AZFAR RAHMAN explores the bad guys of action

OPEN UP THE NEWS AND YOU’RE HIT WITH TERRIBLE STORIES ABOUT THE HORRIBLE THINGS HUMAN BEINGS DO TO ONE ANOTHER. LOOK AT SYRIA, WITH PILES AND PILES OF DEAD CHILDREN. LOOK AT THE HORROR STORIES OF GANG-RAPE COMING OUT OF INDIA. HECK, JUST LOOK AT BANGLADESH, WHERE RANDOM HUMAN BODY PARTS ARE TURNING UP

IN BAGS. LOOKING AT THE WORLD WE LIVE IN, SOMETIMES ALFRED’S LINE IS THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE SENSE OF THE EVIL AND HORRORS THAT SURROUND US. IN A WORLD FILLED WITH SUCH RUTHLESS AND CRUEL PEOPLE, FANTASY AND FICTION ARE SOMETIMES THE ONLY WAY WE CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT MAKES THEM TICK.

A “VILLAIN” IN LITERATURE MAY JUST BE AN OPPOSING FORCE PREVENTING THE STORY’S PROTAGONIST FROM ACHIEVING HIS/HER GOAL. “SUPERVILLAINS” MORE COMMON IN COMIC BOOKS, VIDEO GAMES, AND RECENTLY MOVIES, IS DISTINCTIVE BECAUSE THEY ARE DECIDEDLY EVIL AND DEFINITELY NOT GOOD NEWS. FANTASY AND FICTION PROVIDE A SAFE MEDIUM, SO TO SPEAK, TO EXPLORE AND ANALYSE THE CHARACTERS IN A WAY THAT REAL LIFE CANNOT. ONE CAN DIGEST SADISM AND TORTURE, WHEN ONE KNOWS IT IS FICTION. IT’S MUCH HARDER TO THINK ABOUT EMPATHISING WITH THEM WHEN YOU KNOW THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MISERY OF ACTUAL HUMAN LIVES. TO REALLY UNDERSTAND THEM, OR WHAT THEY ARE CAPABLE OF, COMIC BOOKS HAVE BEEN A KEY DEVICE TO OPENING UP THE WORLD OF IMAGINATION AND COMPREHENSION. SOME OF THE VERY FIRST SUPER VILLAINS THAT CAME FROM THE WORK OF FICTION WERE JOHN DEVIL, PROFESSOR MORIARTY AND DR FU MANCHU. OVER THE YEARS, THESE BADDIES PROVIDED BLUEPRINTS FOR MODERN DAY SUPER VILLAINS THAT WE NOW KNOW AS THE JOKER, LEX LUTHOR, AND MAGNETO. THESE NEWER ANTAGONISTS HAVE ADAPTED EVEN AS THE FACE OF EVIL EVOLVED IN THE REAL WORLD. CHARACTERS SUCH AS BANE AND LEXLUTHOR ARE VERY MUCH IMAGINABLE IN REAL LIFE. rk side I KNEW YOU WERE TROUBLE ... While the local media has been salivating over the Oishee Rahman drug-induced double homicide scandal, international media are tut-tutting over another young teen, Cherice Morales, whose affair with her high school teacher Stacey Rambold (authorities have ruled it as statutory rape), ultimately led to her suicide. Still fresh in our memories is the case of Quazi Nafis, accused and convicted for an attempted terrorist attack. While these are very different stories, one word that has been bandied about in all three cases is “misguided”.

What makes a good

super villain? A SUPER VILLAIN DOESN’T ALWAYS NEED TO HAVE SUPER POWERS. HAVING THEM COULD BE AN ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION IF THEY ARE NOT CUNNING OR INTELLIGENT ENOUGH BUT IF THEY HAVE THE INTELLECT, POWERS COME SECONDARY. CHARACTERS SUCH AS THE JOKER AND HARLEY QUINN HAVE NO SUPER POWER AT ALL. HOWEVER, THEY ARE SOME OF THE DEADLIEST FOES THAT THE BATMAN HAD TO FACE. AT TIMES JUST CHARISMA AND INTELLECT’S ENOUGH, GREED IS A GOOD FUEL HERE TOO, AND OF COURSE, ENDLESS SUPPLIES OF CASH! AND IF NONE OF THE ABOVE IS AVAILABLE, BEING A SOCIOPATH SHOULD DO IT. A SUPER VILLAIN CANNOT HAVE A TYPICAL FIRST AND LAST NAME. YOU CAN’T EXPECT PEOPLE TO BE SCARED OF YOU IF YOU CALL YOURSELF “ABIR AHMED.” A SUPER VILLAIN NEEDS TO HAVE A TITLE JUST AS REFLECTIVE AS THEIR PERSONA. THE TITLE OR NAME SHOULD EITHER SOUND DARK, THREATENING OR MYSTIFYING, AND SHOULD ALSO BE ABLE TO HELP INSPIRE A COSTUME. A SUPER VILLAIN ALWAYS HAS A SECRET LAIR. THEY CAN’T JUST PLOT THEIR DIRTY DEEDS WITH THEIR LEGIONS OF THE DASTARDLY IN THE KITCHEN! A SECRET LAIR IS A MUST. AND MONOLOGUES. WHY ELSE ARE CHARACTERS SUCH AS THE JOKER SO IMMORTAL? QUOTES LIKE ‘DO YOU KNOW HOW I GOT THESE SCARS?’ ARE SOMETHING THAT WILL ALWAYS SEND CHILLS DOWN ANYONE’S BACK, AND THAT IS PRECISELY WHY A SUPER VILLAIN HAS CERTAIN QUOTES AND SPEECHES. THE SPEECHES BEFORE HEADING OUT FOR AN ATTACK, THE SPEECH DURING TELLING THE HERO HOW HE WILL SUCCEED, AND THE SPEECH THAT HE TELLS THE HERO, “THIS ISN’T OVER YET; YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE LAST OF ME!” BEFORE BEING TAKEN AWAY TO JAIL OR PRISON. AND LASTLY, OPTIMISM. FUNNILY ENOUGH, A SUPER VILLAIN MUST ALWAYS STAY OPTIMISTIC ABOUT HIS FUTURE ENDEAVOURS EVEN THOUGH HE KNOWS FAILURE WILL BE IMMINENT. THE KEY TO KEEP TRYING AGAIN AND AGAIN IS HOPING THAT SOMEDAY THE SUPERHERO MIGHT JUST FALL FOR ONE OF HIS TRAPS. NOTHING LIKE GOOD SIMPLE OPTIMISM TO KEEP THE VILLAIN STICKING TO HIS AGENDAS.

After a cocoon of familial guidance through childhood, adolescence is the first time friends start to become a real influence, and peer pressure comes to play. While every teen wants to blend, belong, and a little rebellion against the parental units is to be expected, where do you draw the line and decide that maybe, just maybe you’re actually rolling with the wrong crowd? SABRINA FATMA AHMAD discusses some warning signs.

You lose touch with all your old friends after meeting these new ones Unless your parents are in the kind of profession that requires frequent moves and school transfers, you have a bunch of close friends you went to school with, and who were probably vetted and approved by your parents. As you grow up, it’s normal to evolve and outgrow a few of them. But if you find all your old friends disappearing from your life after you find a new group, and especially if they complain, that’s cause for concern, if not alarm.

You experience a sudden drop in school performance after having become friends with them Friends trump trigonometry every time, but if your new friendships start to distract you to the point that your grades are being affected, it’s time to cut back. Also, watch out for friends who encourage you to do things that may get you into trouble, like cutting class, or cheating.

Your new friends affect your relationship with your parents The first thing a bad-news friend will do is try to alienate you from your family. Paedophiles, child traffickers, domestic abusers and drug peddlers all do this. They’ll be all charming and empathic, all the while, subtly egging on any disagreement you may have with your parents and close friends, until you’re left thinking they’re the only ones who “get” you.

Your gut tells you no

If your first instinct makes you uneasy around these new people, there’s probably a good reason for it. This might just be the case of an unfounded first impression, but it never hurts to be a little more observant before rushing into friendship.

written in the Stars

A Comic Lover’s Cloud Nine Growing up in a world of the ordinary, every child seeks refuge in a world of fantasy. And like every other child, AKM Alamgir Khan, more popularly known as Jamil, found his solitary refuge in comic books since he was a little kid. All grown up, Jamil is now a businessman and an entrepreneur. Regardless of his success as an adult, a part of his childhood still stuck through, and that was his love for comic books. In 2010, Jamil decided to share his childhood experience of being surrounded by comic books with the youth of today, and for that, he opened up his very own comic book store named Jamil’s Comic Collectibles. Azfar Rahman recently caught up with the inspiring comic enthusiast for a quick interview session Tell me a little bit about yourself. My name is Jamil and I am a comic book fan. I have been a comic book fan since I was around 7 years old, and since then, they have been a big part of my childhood. I finished my undergrads and grad school from IBA, Dhaka University, and now I’m working as a Sponsor Director for Standard Ceramic Industries Ltd, and Delta CNG. I am also the Finance Secretary of the BD CNG Association. What was childhood like? I was always the introverted kind, so comic books and the various TV shows on BTV (Different Strokes, Cosby Show, MacGyver, etc) were what influenced me the most while growing up. Back in the ‘80s when I started school, we used to have lots of comics around; Phantom, Mandrake the magician, Twinkle, and of course, the classic Marvel and DC comics. Superman and Batman were my childhood favorites but as I got a little older, Spiderman and Daredevil were added to that list. During my teens, I was exposed to the brilliance of Alan Moore and Frank Miller’s Watchmen and Dark Knight. How did the idea of launching your very own comic store come to be? Frankly speaking, I always wanted to do this but it wasn’t until my daughter,

TM AG TU ESDAY, SEPTE M B E R 3, 201 3

Afsheen, was 2 years old that the idea of launching this store came into reality. I wanted kids and young adults of today to be able to experience the joys and wonders of comic books that I did when I was a kid. I wanted to give something back to the community and that’s how the idea for Jamil’s Comic Collectibles came into being. Were there any obstacles or hurdles along the line when you first initiated this project? Not really. I started ordering comics from USA when I was still in school. When I first decided to do this seriously, I contacted some known sellers from USA. The hard part was finding a good place for the shop. Got the licenses and off we went. I had some cash stashed away, so funding was not a problem in this case. Launching a “comic book” store in an electronic/technology dominated generation, what led you to take such a leap of faith without knowing if this was going to be a success or not? I did take a leap of faith. Comics, if you know your stuff, are good products and good prices. I started the shop, taking a bit of risk, ordering a huge amount to lower the average costs. In 2010 when we started, our usual prices were Tk25 and Tk50. But a few months into the

business, I realised that comic fans are not really bothered about the prices; what they want is to be part of the whole world culture. Even though fans were happy with the prices, they wanted the “good stuff.” So, on our first anniversary, which pleasantly marked the relaunching of the entire DC Comics line in September 2011, we started bringing the brand new comics straight from the US, flown in on bi-monthly basis. That changed the whole thing. Till date, how has the customer response been? It’s been amazing! Our fans are great! We have more than 1300 members in our JCC Facebook Group. On every new comic book day, when we get the new shipments in store, fans go crazy! It’s wonderful to be in this business. Do you think you might ever start up your own line of comic series? Not really. Managing a publication is a big effort. Distribution alone is a big challenge in Bangladesh. I used to draw and write comics as a kid, but don’t think I can manage the time or energy to do a

decent job now. What are your future plans? Well we just became an official Dealer for CGC, a third party Comics Guarantee Company, who does grading for rare and valuable comics. We are steadily diversifying our product lines by bringing in regular Archie’s, Simpsons and other all-age comics. A Mysterious Love Ed Brubaker is known in the comic book world for his work with legendary characters such as Batman, Daredevil & the X-Men. However, he branched out on his own to create some compelling characters in Fatale, a surprise summer hit published by Image Comics. The artwork is done by seasoned artist Sean Phillips, who does a great job with the noir style artwork which helps set the tone for the entire story, even when dealing with brutal graphic images that Phillips uses his experience of, to add a touch of class, which makes for a pleasant and organic reading experience. The story revolves around a mysterious

femme fatale named Josephine who tempts a man named Nicholas Lash, into obsession. Every life Josephine enters seems to end in destruction and we get to go on a gripping journey that ties in classic noir elements like crooked detectives, the mob and of course- love. Despite its classic noir setting, the book is quite versatile and often delves into horror territory. The shift to a darker tone is done well although it can be a bit confusing at times to follow. None the less, it’s a good choice for those looking for something new and with the story yet to finish, it’s a good time to hop onto the bandwagon. Fardeen Ameen

1) If a stranger is being chatty out of the blue, pay no attention. 2) When using public transportation, dress as humbly as possible. Don’t carry flashy items (laptops, smartphones etc). 3) You can carry those nail-clippers that have a knife inside them. 4) Don’t travel through routes which you have never used before. 5) If you are up against a group, attack the one who’s behind you. 6) You will not be able to keep track of time. 7) Always keep your parents’ or friends’ number in your speed dial. Dial their number and hide the phone in a manner so that your guardians will know you are in danger.

When travelling by a rickshaw or CNG, if you feel that someone is following you, don’t shake it off right away; your doubts are relevant. We can see all the assaults and violations happening in our neighbouring country. The focus shifts to our country as well, especially with people in Dhaka often falling victim to those we know as “muggers.” They mercilessly beat up innocent people in exchange of their valuables. Even if you surrender your belongings and walk away, your attacker might not let you off the hook easily. What will you do to save yourself...surrender or attack?

Surrender

If you lose a couple of hundreds or thousands and a cell phone from your pockets, and walk away, it beats getting maimed for life. You are everything your attacker wants to be, and what he can’t

A Sophisticated Allure

secure on his own terms, he will take by force. Agree to give whatever you have, and tell him to leave you alone. You should be glad that you came out of it unharmed. As for the valuables, you’ve got a family who’s there to make it up to you.

Attack

This is not child’s play. If you attack a person who’s about to attack you, go with full conviction. As mentioned previously, some muggers will not let you walk away. In such cases, flee the site. If they catch you, then this is your cue; strike back. Since it’s all in the act of self-defence, make sure you injure your attacker in a way from which he can’t recover. If you show signs of uncertainty while hitting him, then your attacker is most likely to pounce on you.

Interview with a Vampire by Annie Rice is one of those gothic novels whose allurement of the senses will leave you with goose bumps. The first thing that TMAG would like to say is that for those who do not know the story, this one goes beyond our modern bloodsucking friends (or foes). The novel tells the story of the life and afterlife of three vampires: Louis, Lestat, the vampire who made him and Claudia, their eternal child companion. As the story progressed, Rice took opportunities to explore some brooding philosophical and psychological ideas. She discussed questions about life, death and human nature through the minds of the characters, who are each very well developed. They have their own fears, values and doubts. It is interesting to compare Louis’s take on the large questions of life (which are based on his half-life existence) with our own answers to these questions. It is this trait in the character of Louis that makes him more relatable, which in turn, lures the reader in. This is a vampire story unlike most others. It is one that makes the concept of vampirism alluring and enticing, which our modern day stories have failed to accomplish. The vampires have a certain sophisticated charm to them, instead of the mindless monsters that other tales have portrayed them to be. The mysterious and mesmerising vampires in this tale are bound to have you wanting more. This book is available for order at PBS bookstore in Shantinagar and is available for download in the form of an ebook. Afshan Sattar

This week’s best Instrument Imagine the music of ghosts and the sound of evil approaching and feel the cold shivers that run down your spine. That sound is made with a piano organ. It is a massive instrument that will give you several goose-bumps when you listen to it play. The piano organ is by far one of the greatest achievements of man. The pipe organ is played like a keyboard/piano, however generating different sustaining sounds coming out from several pipes built within the massive instrument. It is one of the oldest instruments, dating back to the 8th century. The organ uses wind moving through pipes to produce these expressive sounds.

Perhaps, this would be a sequential column for the movement of extreme metal acts in Bangladesh. A few bands are holding the flag of metal giving their best performances across the country and even sometimes around the world. Thrash is one of them. Ascertaining the name from

The sound of Evil The pipes are divided into ranks and controlled by the use of hand stops and/or combination pistons. These instruments vary greatly in size, ranging from a cubic yard to a height reaching five floors, and are built in churches, synagogues, concert halls, and homes. The smaller sized organs are called positive or portative, and are used by bands like Wolfmother. The modern day sees several hybrid organs appearing, in which pipes are augmented with electronic additions. There are different kinds of organs that are produced, besides the Pipe Organ. There are chamber organs, theatre organs which are used for different locations. The smaller version of the organ

became very cool when hipsters started implementing it in their music. Suddenly it was rock and roll to have an organ instrument. And it was awesome! Bands like The Who, Queen, Deep Purple, The Doors, Yes, Pink Floyd have all used the organ in their music. The larger organs are now only used in churches or theatres but the smaller ones are available. pIECE OF HEAVEN John Mayer has made his career by growing up in the public, and Paradise Valley, his sixth studio alum, continues to follow the same path as his previous albums. The title of the album refers to Mayer’s Montana retreat, the chapter of his life where he finds himself relaxed, joyful frame of mind. And why not? After two full surgeries on his throat, his voice has been restored, and his personal life has ceased to be a tabloid fixture. Last year while working with producer Don was on “Born and Raised,” he dives into the American roots music. Folk and country elements abound; the wirework of guitar lines of “Wildfire” recalls the Grateful Dead. However Mayer can get into trouble when he pushes too hard for effect, so the laid-back vibe here seems to work for his advantage, allowing his charm to cast the spell of magic on the listeners ears.

His boldface love life enters the picture in a lovely duet with his ex Katy Perry “Who You Love”, as well as in “Paper Doll,” a measured if pointed response to Taylor Swift’s “Dear John.” “You’re like 22 girls in one,” he sings a nod to Swift’s song “22.” “And none of them know what they’re running from/Was it just too far to fall?” Frank Ocean handles the vocal on a different, soulful version of “Wildfire.” And Mayer’s slow take on J.J. Cale’s “Call Me the Breeze” turned unpredictably emotional when Cale died shortly before the LP’s release. The song’s meaning remains true for Paradise Valley, and Mayer continues to blow down the road, with his charismatic charm, winning millions of hearts around the globe.

their genre; Thrash is one of the major metal bands in Bangladesh. In early 2011, four young thrashers Sumit, Hamim, Sameer and Alok formed the band. Initially, they didn’t do too many gigs. They were busy with full time practicing. Because of some personal complications Alok had to leave the band about a year after the formation and then Asif Mahmood took over the drum throne, replacing Alok on September of 2012. In the mean time Thrash was busy recording tracks to release their debut EP. They have signed with the record label ‘Incursion Music’ on September of that year and on 5 October, 2012 Thrash released their very first EP titled “A Lesson in Thrash.” That EP contains 4 different tracks included an intro. Those tracks got massive responses through the structures. Indianization, Crossfire; these are the most listened tracks by their fans. Thrash had earned so many appreciations from the local metal-heads. After releasing the EP, Thrash became busy with regular gigs and shows in Dhaka and even in other cities. They did a huge number of quality

shows such as Metal Morgue (1, 2), The Bengal Regiment, and many more. Social disorder, demoralize, war; these are the main themes of their lyrics. They protest against the disorders by the aggression in their sounds and tones. Raw riff playing by Hamim and Sumit with versatile guitar solos, Samir slaps on his bass guitar and screams, and Asif’s lazyless destructive drumming will take you to the universe of aggression and violence. You can’t simply ignore their music if you are a metal-head. Thrash is working now with their upcoming releases and gigs. In replying on the question of their recent activity and plans, Sumit, guitarist of Thrash told TMAG, “Well, we will be releasing ‘A Lesson in Thrash’ again from i-Tunes very soon. Meanwhile we are almost ready for some new releases. We haven’t decided yet whether it’s an EP or a full length or in singles but it’s going to happen soon I guess. And we have a good number of shows on the way. So we are excited and looking forward to it.”

participation was the cherry on top. Not until this event did anyone ever expect the Bangladeshi youth scene to be so passionately involved in doing cosplays. After the success of the Dhaka Comicon and an increasing growth of comic fans, the very first Dhaka Pop Culture Expo was organized just a few days ago, resulting in another huge success. Comicons and Pop Art Culture Expos are an annual programme held in a lot of countries all over the world, and for the first time, thanks to the initiatives of

a few true fans, Dhaka enjoyed its first ever Pop Art Expo from August 30 – 31. The expo, an initiative by Nesar Nadim Talukder, along with the support of Samin Ahmed and Nabil Ahmed, was a convention for fans of comic books, films, TV series, anime, and video games, to gather and celebrate their common interests, share ideas, and simply just have a good time all together. Highlights of the event were definitely the cosplays, and given that some of these fans went out of their way to pull off that perfect look is what proves their dedication and love for this genre. The event also featured a lot of stalls from several merchandise retailers, along with an illustration corner, live performances, and music! Thanks to initiatives like Dhaka Pop Culture Expo and Dhaka Comicon, fans of these genres now finally have a platform to experience something that they’ve never had the chance to before. Dhaka Pop Culture Expo promises to be back soon with more plans, so keep your eyes and ears open people! Azfar Rahman

Game

Kill’em all Deadpool has arrived with his own game, written and directed by Marvel Comics, and starring Deadpool. Does the game break away from the pack, or was Deadpool better left without his own game? For starters it’s not perfect but definitely worth more than 5.5. Apart from Deadpool’s demented humour, creative script, and brilliant sight gags, it is a fairly conventional generic action game. The game play is amazing. The creators have managed to capture the character brilliantly. Since this is not Batman, the combat can get repetitive but really, once you upgrade your weapons enough and use the pew-pew cannon, it is not that bad. However the only gripe is that it is too short. Even before you know it, you will munch up on the levels and finish off the game but you will be in for laughter. Why else do we play a

game if not to have fun? Deadpool does this very well. Simply put, “Deadpool” is a game with a character that overtakes everything else. If you’re a fan of the comic book character, then you’ll most likely be able to appreciate the game on a different level than your average player, because you can appreciate Deadpool. If you

Don’t Talk to Strangers

took Deadpool out of this game, then you’ll be left blank almost 90% of the time throughout the entire game, leaving you to think of it as a waste of money. There’s nothing that sets this game apart from the pack beyond the character with the name on the box and, really, that’s enough to carry it, but only as long as you’re in on the joke. Tahsin Momin

“Trust” could have turned into an oversimplified PSA message aimed at younger people and parents on the dangers of talking to strangers online. Director David Schwimmer (Ross from “Friends”, and he knows how to work behind a camera just fine) thankfully doesn’t treat the material so bluntly. It’s a difficult subject and Schwimmer proceeds with caution, giving us a strong story that is both absorbing and unnerving. For starters, let’s say you don’t care at all about the ethical issues here, or about the dangers cyberpredators that have been escalating in recent years at an alarming rate. You don’t have any young kids and you don’t want a “message movie.” Is “Trust” still worth watching? Absolutely. The film works as a fine thriller which never slacks off and features terrific performances from Clive Owen, Catherine Keener, Liana Liberato, and Chris Coffey the perv. If, however, you’re worried about your kids and you’re watching this film to learn something about this weird phenomenon of online predators, prepare to be very, very scared. Annie (Liana Liberato) is 14. She gets a new laptop as a gift and start talking to a boy online. A nice guy called Charlie who says he is 16. Later he says he’s really 20, which Annie doesn’t mind. No wait, he’s actually 25, he says. You know where this is going. Annie doesn’t. She accepts the ‘little’ lies one step at a time and before she knows, she is way, way out of her depth. The honourable thing about the script is that it actually bothers to examine how predators use tested psychological techniques to manipulate their victims. A lot of things are going on in this film and Schwimmer offers up no easy answers. Take, for example, that the father works in marketing and his job involves sexualising teen girls. Or the dilemma of Western parents who are constantly being told they need to respect their child’s privacy, but have to take the blame when their stupid kid screws up. If there is a message in this film, it sure isn’t a clear one. Abak Hussain

TEENARAMA

He says

Dear Diary, August 30, 2013

Why is it that when I am finally trying to redeem myself, I get knocked over? I was going to break it to Imran first today, and later face Sameer’s wrath, but of course life never goes the way you plan it right? It slipped my mind that Imran was supposed to pick up my call records that my dad needed a couple of days ago. When I saw the papers clenched in his hand I knew my time was over. I saw a side of Imran that I did not know was there. He came over, looking all high and mighty, grabbed my shoulders and sat me down on the edge of my bed. He was rough and menacing. He put the call records in front of me, and before I could explain, he raised his hand up and told me “It’s over.” Knowing Imran, he must have called the number and snooped around for all the information he could find. Imran knew all too well about Sameer, so I was sort of glad that I could weasel out without having to explain myself. Come to think of it, if I had to explain myself, what would I have said? Nothing could ease the pain; more his over mine. He looked at me for what seemed like eternity and said “I hope you will be happy.” He walked out of the door slamming the door and my guilt with full force. Some strange thing told me that it can’t be this easy and this wasn’t over, just yet. I called Sameer and for the first time today, he rejected my call. Something wasn’t right and this time I really didn’t want to find out what was in store for me. THE DREAMER

She says

If constant worry, fear and anxiety rule your relationship, then you have unfortunately secured your place in an abusive relationship. TMAG shows you two incidents where emotional abuse is as scarring as a physical one

The problem of having a dictator as a partner...

He says

My girlfriend is a constant source of my angst and tensions. She is always on my case about getting a job and getting out of the country with her. I just finished high school and I am in no hurry to settle down but her constant abuse is making me do what I don’t want to.

She says

My boyfriend has a way with words. He will make me do things that I don’t want to and make it look like it’s what I secretly want to do. He is very simple and wants me to dress down at all times. Not only that, he gets furious if I spend too much time with my family.

The problem of losing your individuality in a relationship ...

He says

During my A’ levels, I always used to be surrounded by friends. But after I started dating, my social life became nonexistent. My girlfriend stealthily kept them away from me and now in two years I barely have any friends left.

She says

I used to be very calm and collected with no one ever being able to question my temper. My boyfriend was just the opposite; always shouting at the top of his lungs about irrelevant things. He used to fight with me so often, that now I don’t know how to keep my cool in other situations. It’s terrible.
