Discobang's Pad Meet the artist

Doesn’t every single girl have at least one Barbie doll from their childhood? Of course they do! Collecting Barbie dolls is quite a hobby for a big number of girls. But did you know that this legendary Barbie doll was named after Barbara, who was the daughter of the inventor, Ruth Handler? Ruth was also the co-founder of the Mattel toy company that she founded with Harold Mattson. She was a great writer, and her writings were usually for kids. Her famous books are Barbie in the Nutcracker, Detective Barbie: Mystery of the Carnival Caper and Barbie Riding Club. She believed that through the doll, a little girl could imagine herself as anything she wanted to be. Handler died at the age of 85 but the Barbie dolls live on as every little girl’s first friend even to this day!

word on the street

The power of play! In the streets of Dhaka, among the rush of busy people and the voices of people fighting, there is a home of peace that lives within the soul of street kids. They know how to find happiness in simple things and accept the simple joys in life. Have you ever just stopped by to watch how they play? Their excitement about the games they play, whether it is spinning tops or five stones, make it all the more fun to watch. So, when you pass the street kids playing with yoyos or spinning tops and other toys, try to see the world through their eyes. Perhaps, their catching energy will reach you and help you forget those daily burderns and just enjoy the simplicity of life.

Poisonous Pride In Greek mythology, Medusa was a beautiful, young woman with beautifully long, silky hair. She lived in the city of Athens in Greece, and while there were many pretty women in the city, Medusa was considered by far the most beautiful. Medusa was proud of her own beauty, loving herself even as she looked at her mirror every day. One day, Medusa was in the temple of Athena, the goddess of wisdom, who looked over the city of Athens. Medusa in her pride made silly comments, saying that she was far prettier than Athena. Athena was so angry that she turned Medusa’s face into that of a monster. Medusa’s beautiful hair began to twist and turn into horrible hissing serpents, and her milky white skin became a sickly green tint. Athena told Medusa that her pride had done this to her, and that looking

Zombies Take Over In Zombieville USA, you start by choosing your character. You can be a doctor with good healing powers, a sneaky ninja who’s good with hammers and swords, a police or pirate good with guns and much more. You can hunt for coins and bullets and protect yourself with over 15 weapons that may be upgraded. With these weapons in hand (which you can use only two at a time) you need to kill as many zombies as possible and run forward to finish each level. Every level gets harder as faster zombies

with more powers come and attack you. In some levels, however, you might get lucky and get a partner to help you out, or a ride such as a car, helicopter or ambulance to drive you through the whole level! When zombies have taken over your town, there is nothing else to do but steal from their houses and battle through to survive. But how long can you stay alive? Find out by playing this game, available on android/iOS devices.

The Pixar team planned out “A Bug’s Life”, “Monsters Inc.” and “Wall E” during a lunch meeting at Hidden City Café. The Hummingbirds are the only birds in the bird family that can fly backwards. This is because they have the ability to switch each of their wings in a circle, one by one.

Color Card Trick DIY

WHAT A COLOURFUL LIFE Spray paints are cool. Spray paints are fun. But it’s not always that we get the colours that we want. So why not grab some simple supplies and make your own colour sprays! What you need • Empty spray bottles • Different acrylic paints • Water Instructions Open an empty spray bottle and pour one part water and two parts acrylic paints of your choice into the bottle. Close the bottle and shake vigorously to mix the colours well. Press the nozzle to check whether the coloured water isn’t too thick. Your spray paint is now ready for some action. Use different acrylic paints to make different coloured sprays. sama e deen

What you need • A deck of cards Instructions 1. Secretly separate the cards into two decks of black & red, and keep in mind which colour you place on top. 2. Ask your friend to choose one card from the top by fanning out the top few cards. 3. Again, fan out the bottom few cards and tell them to put their chosen card near the bottom of the pack.

Split the deck in the middle, and place the bottom half on the top to shuffle. (It is ok if you have not split exactly in the middle.) Look through the deck for your

Science

HELLO HELLO! Mobile phones, cordless phones, the rage of the Tabs and Notes is on, so the old fashioned tin-can phone might seem super old and boring but it is an idea that promises to be fun and educative and of course less harmful. What you need • Two open tin cans • Duct Tape • Nail • Hammer • String • Markers, glitter, other decorations • Parental guidance

2.

Instructions 1. Hammer a nail through the bottom of each tin can, making a hole in

the centre. Cut a long length of string up to 10 feet and insert one end of the string through the bottom of one can. Knot it on the inside and do the same with the other can. Take a can and tell your friend to take the other can. Move apart until the string is taut. One of you should put a can to your ear while the other talks directly into the can.

6.

bigstock

Make fun noises and have a conversation while the sound travels through the wire.

How it works It’s fun physics. When you speak, your voice makes vibrations, which travel down the stretched string and vibrates the bottom of the can. The tin vibrations, vibrates the air and these vibrations travel from the can to the other person’s ear! It’s a whole big vibration thing. Sama E Deen

my pet story

V & Victoria I was always a dog lover. So, when my sister bought me a pair of turtles for my 15th birthday, I wasn’t sure if I could take care of them properly. The first thing you do when you have a pet is name them. But honestly, since I had not much interest in keeping those turtles, I didn’t name them. Secondly, you have to make a proper home for the pet. If you’re wondering that if I did, yes I did! It was a beautiful big aquarium with a huge mineral and many colorful corals and marbles in it. Thirdly, you have to

courtesy

feed them timely. I did that too. When I fed them I used to stare at them for hours. And I realized they weren’t that bad. I used to spend time with them, at times talk. Then came a time when they would be very happy to see me, because they knew I would feed them, play with them and what not. After all they were not at all bad as pets. So, finally I named them. The male turtle is called “V” and the female “Victoria.” They make a beautiful couple, I must say! Bushra Faiza
