Recline in style

Bringing your school campus to your bedroom will always be a fun, cheap and easy way to give it your personality. Let’s look at a few ways you can own your room, the old school way

Soft luminescent lights peeking from the top of the walls and a recliner on the side - throw in some bright pillows and this corner will make for a chill movie night!

Corkboards

Put up your top graded essay scripts, and pictures with your favourite teachers. Also, cut out your goofy pictures from school, and pin them on the board. If you want the board to do the bragging for you, put up certificates you won at sports, along with your best basketball, football, or badminton pictures. Last but not least, cut out your school’s logo from an old shirt and pin it up.

What a rack

Qutubuddin Kapadia

If you are a sports buff, keep your medals hanging from the hooks and your trophies lined up on one rack. You could even make a poster and a

priority rack. On the poster, write “My precious, from the top,” and hang the poster on the topmost hook of the rack. Whoever comes in will know what you value the most just by looking at your rack. Putting the books on the last rack may raise a few eyebrows, especially from your folks!

The campus wall

Make two holes in the wall and install a couple of hooks. Get magazine or paper cut outs of your favourite movie characters, actors, comic strips and graffiti art. Punch a hole in them, string them up on your wall. It will give your room the edge it needs! Natasha Rahman

FYI

Li’l Squabbles Can Take a Backseat Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and (Reggie???) were all good friends. Yes, Archie took forever to choose between Betty and Veronica but while both fought for his attention, it didn’t stop the two from going shopping together or being the best of friends. Similarly, no one was more selfish than Reggie or lazier than Jughead. Despite stolen food or thrown tantrums, all of them managed to stick together through high school detentions, and the highs and lows of life. Let’s see if we can take a leaf out of this book...err, comic, and learn a few things about friendship

Relationships

Archies may be born in the 1930s but love and its dilemmas are timeless. You and your best friend like the same person? Either be the big person and step out of it or explain the situation to them calmly. Maybe this doesn’t even mean as much to your friend. Compromises are a must in any relationship and friendship is no different. Ultimately, there is no point ruining a good friendship for a relationship that hasn’t even taken form.

TM AG TU ESDAY, M ay 27, 2014

Life

Some friends take it upon themselves to be the saviours of your soul and will do anything to keep you out of what they deem to be “trouble.” Yes, at times that even involves telling on you to your parents. If need be, filter certain information from them and stop with the over sharing. Cutting them out is overreacting as they mostly have your best interests at heart and are usually the ones who will tell it like it is, when you need a reality check.

Character traits

Some friends are selfish, some are greedy, and some are free riders. It takes all sorts to make the circle and all flavours are important. Chew the bad with the good and gently learn to look for the good in the bad. After all, nobody is perfect and there is a reason

why you are still friends with that selfish person who refuses you a bite of their sandwich even after the countless times they’ve hogged yours. Maybe this person overlooks your irritating habits too and being ill-tempered or greedy is just one blemish on their otherwise clean personality. Munira Fidai

School Survival

The Detention Room How many times have you seen Archie and the gang being held up in the detention room by Weatherbee? And they made it look like they are actually having fun! Jughead is either taking a nap or munching on something, Archie and the girls are talking between themselves as Reggie is fighting off Moose. Such a scene is only suited within the confines of fiction in a comic, but in reality, things in the detention room can be harsher than what one could imagine If you think disciplinary policy at your school was strict, think again. Detention for you may seem like just a few more after-school classes but in Japanese schools, there have been instances where students were made to clean classrooms and even toilets. Every year, the Ministry of Education supplies teachers with a handbook on the do’s and don’ts while punishing a student. The handbook even states things like, how long a student can be made to stand before it can be termed as illegal. Like most of the countries in the world, corporal punishment is illegal in Japan. It has been so since 1947,

the year when the School Education Law was passed. The law stated that teachers are not allowed to strike or threaten to strike a student. But there have been incidents where the law was broken. Recently a video of a volleyball coach slapping a student from Hamamatsu Nittai Senior High School in Shizuoka Prefecture, went viral. Most of the English-medium schools in Bangladesh do not allow its teachers to dole out corporal punishment to their students but then again, such punishment is a natural thing in many Bangla-medium ones in the countryside. Walking into a madrasa, one may

except to see “beth” or canes lined up for the purposes of making a student “realise his mistakes.” Previously, punishing a student would have meant that it’s in the best interests of the kid. But the emotional baggage it creates within a young mind, is dire. Awareness of such consequences is making people avoid aforementioned detention techniques. God forbid, if you are in detention the next time, know that the task handed over to you isn’t all that hard.

FASHION FACE-OFF

Wardrobe Check

Keene on fashion The wardrobe of the Archies cast has evolved over the decades, but if we had to choose one person for fashion inspiration, it would have to be Katy Keene. After all, the lady is Katy Perry’s go-to for fashion inspiration While hemlines rise and fall and silhouettes fit and flare, Ms Keene has managed to retain her appeal without varying her signature by much. Her looks have the vintage pin-up appeal, and this is reflected in her outfits. The Katy Keene lookbook has three essential elements: the hourglass shape, the sweetheart neckline, and cross-cultural referencing. With a little tweaking, you can make it your own.

Cinch it in

The key to an hourglass silhouette is a fitted waist, but this might not work on all body shapes. For some,

cinching the waist with a belt is all that is required; this option may be less than comfortable for big-busted girls, or those packing a bit of a paunch. Investing in high-waisted pants, or pencil skirts may prove to be a better solution for you.

How sweet is that?

The sweetheart neckline is ultra feminine, and very flattering, but can be tricky to pull off. When picking your sweetheart, make sure it fits just so, not to too tight or loose. Too tight can cause unsightly bulges, while too loose will have you tugging and pulling

the whole time. Wear it with simple accessories, and let the cut do all the work for you.

Something borrowed

From Chinese collars to jungle prints, Ms Keene has tried it all, and even in these highly PC times, you can find a

way to let other cultures inspire your style. Try an Asian-style wrap top, or an obi-style belt for that Asian influence. Hieroglyphic motifs give your clothes that Egyptian touch. Or maybe you can roar in a fierce animal print. Don’t be afraid to experiment; just don’t try all of these in one outfit. Sabrina Fatma Ahmad

In addition to having many hobbies, Archie was passionate about his cars. For decades, he was shown driving a 1916 Ford Model T Jalopy called “Betsy” Archie loved many cars but not as much as Ol’ Betsy, a red Jalopy. The car was so old that it was incredibly noisy, the soft top could not be opened anymore and it broke down very frequently. He would sometimes use his Jalopy to go to school and take Betty and Veronica on dates, all of which led him to a lot of trouble. However, Betsy was destroyed in Archie #238 (September 1983), after Archie had Dilton Doiley install a rocket-propelled motor for a race. A test run destroyed the Jalopy, but was replaced by a brand new Hot Rod, won in a raffle draw by Archie’s friends. In a story, Archie tried to have his Jalopy insured; he described it as being a “Ford, Chevy, Plymouth, Pierce-Arrow, Packard, DeSoto, and Hudson.” The insurance agent originally thought that Archie wanted to insure several cars, but then Archie explained that his Jalopy was “a collection of replacement parts from several junkyards,” with some parts of the car dating back to 1926. In the comics, his Jalopy had been fictionally referred to as a 1912 Maxwell, but was its appearance inspired by any actual cars? Well, it would be right in stating that Archie did drive a Maxwell. It was a 1912 Maxwell, which was only made from 1904 to 1925 and was sold to Chrysler later on. The comic book changes its story later, because not many people knew what a Maxwell was, and if they did, they knew the car would be worth thousands of dollars today. If that was so, then Archie could sell the car and make enough to buy a brand new car, which would have taken away from the story line at the time. Later, the author described his car as a 1916 Ford Model T, as in the “Archie #192.”

HOT TOPIC

Riverdale Reveries Anyone growing up in the 90’s and up to the turn of the century, will remember Archie comics as having been an important feature in their childhood. With the Internet providing newer and more exciting forms of entertainment, and Hollywood amping up the hype for action-packed superheroes and gritty reboots of fairytales, the wholesome All-American cast of Riverdale slowly lost its appeal. And yet, as the creators of the comic announced the impending death of its lead, Archie Andrews, in the July issue of the “Life with Archie” series, one cannot help but feel a twinge of nostalgia.

And that’s why, dear readers, this week, we bring you one last look at Riverdale, the evolution of the Riverdale cast, and their impact on our lives. Natasha Rahman, Munira Fidai, and Rubab Nayeem Khan

The fortunes of the gang Archibald “Chick” Andrews and Betty Cooper debuted in Pep Comics in the December of 1941 and soon became so famous in a publication called MLJ Magazine that the company changed its name to Archie Comic Publications. In the 1950s, Archie Publishing launched its “Archie Adventure Series” with a new version of the “Shield” and two new characters. The mid 1960s was known as the silver age of comics and Archie’s soared in popularity as

TM AG TU ESDAY, M ay 27, 2014

the relatable character, Archie and his teenage group of friends evolved into the teens that the age of 60s demanded. As time progressed, so did the characters in the comic and Archie’s tried its best to stay true to the teen life in each era. A vivid example of this was an introduction of the openly gay character, Kevin Keller, in 2010, in Veronica, Issue 202. “Life with Archie” was a continuation of Archie’s life with the death of Ms Grundy and Archie’s marriage. The story

was broken into two versions, with Archie marrying Betty in one part and Veronica in the other. In the March of 2014, it was announced that Archie is to die a noble death saving the life of a friend. Archie’s Comic was a big part of teenage life in the 90s but a decade later, it has become more of a nostalgic memory for many. Many say that the reason Archie’s lost popularity was because as time progressed, Archie’s started depicting grim issues like drug

abuse and relationship problems, and people had a hard time adapting to the seriousness of Archie’s from its stark, Good Samaritan, and wholesome teen life of Riverdale. Whatever the reason for its fall, Archibald Andrews formed a hefty part of each 90s teen’s life and will be sorely missed.

The Art of Archies setting, the artwork changed- particularly the wardrobe. The 50’s Archie was seen wearing Aside from the Archie, Betty his Riverdale sweater vest on top of a and Veronica love triangle, plain shirt, and bow ties were sometimes Reggie’s pranks, Jughead’s anti-women motto the comic was an addition. Bob Montana also threw in a few plaid trousers, shorts for both popular mostly for how creators John L Goldwater, Vic Bloom, Dan sexes to give a vintage appeal to the DeCarlo and Bob Montana set the characters. He also gave the ladies a preppy look; Betty, Veronica and Midge timeline, starting from the 50s to the 70s. In other words, with each was seen wearing either a polka-dotted

or a plain blouse with a knee length skirt or topped off with trousers. The fashion was definitely shaped by the cultural mores of the time. Dan DeCarlo in the late 50s and early 60s modernised the outlook of Archie Comics’ characters and established a particular style. The fashion was getting a little daring; the dress lengths were getting shorter for the girls. Here, the Riverdale gang was clad in bright trippy colours (yes, there were times when they were seen wearing neon colours). As the comic kept coming out every year, DeCarlo took into account, the

trends which made the storyline relatable to teens. Eventually, around the 70s, they stopped looking less like hippies, and more like high school kids. T-shirts, jackets, halters, shorts, tube-tops, minis, bikinis and cocktail dresses came into view. And the trends continued to evolve, even after Montana’s death in 1975 and De Carlo’s demise in 2001. So it goes without saying that, regardless of the various transitions in its artwork, Archie Comic has been a forever favourite across the world and it still is.

Lopez. When Dan Parent (writer/artist) who is one of Archie’s greatest creators, created this relationship between Archie and Valerie, it was bound to work. The characters clicked on their love for the same kind of music, and it broke the stereotype when Archie fell head over heels with a black woman and decided to marry her and have a baby with her. This also instigated many Veronica and Betty fans to raise a few eyebrows on why Archie was made to have a child with Valerie. Keller debuted in “Veronica” No. 202 in September 2010. When Kevin Keller locked lips with his boyfriend Devon, in

the issue “Kevin Keller” #10, it created one of the biggest buzz for the comics’ fanatic fans. In the comic, Veronica recorded the kiss and uploaded it to a YouTube equivalent page at Riverdale which started up a heated warfare argument about Keller’s sexuality. Dan Parent, printed this issue as a protest to a project of The American Family Association called One Million moms, where they asked the store Toys R Us not to display the comics, as they felt it wasn’t meant for “children.” The new shocker for the Archie lovers is the death of the Riverdale freckled faced heartthrob Archie Andrews. The 1941 created Archie Andrews will die in the “Life with Archie” series breaking hearts of readers all over the world. According to Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater, Archie dies trying to save a life of his friend. Archie has been a representation of the American teen, with a selfless heart. Hence, the attempt is to kill Archie through an act of love and friendship, an act that will immortalise him even in his death.(Or so we hope) n

The Riverdale controversies.. In 2009, the Archie fans were shocked when the publishers of Archie brought out storylines which led readers to believe that Archie was finally going to be making his choice between Betty and Ron. Needless to say, there was quite a stir. However, at the end, the publishers revealed that this was just a fantasy, where Archie marries Veronica in one story and Betty in another. When the” Archie marries Valerie” comic, Archie#63, which depicted the romance between Archie

Andrews and Valerie Smith from Josie and the Pussycats, hit the stores back in 2010, it gave rise to a lot of inter racial controversies amongst the Archie fans. A little squirming here, a few whispers there, and lots of debate surrounded this new couple, as Archie was always stereotyped to like white girls. Archie comics had followed a pattern of introducing minor dark skinned characters; Nancy woods for Chuck Clayton and Frankie Valdez for Ginger

Skyping for success From connecting lovebirds to keeping it all in the family, bringing friends closer, whether they are far or near, Skype is definitely popular with all ages, but more so with teens. This week TMAG brings you an interesting chat with one of Skype’s investors and his tips to become successful as young entrepreneurs Amithabha Dey Photos BRAC University Computer Club

Ninety percent of success is just showing up -- Woody Allen With the aforementioned quote, Morten Lund, the co-investor of Skype, for the first time, addressed the students at a session arranged at the BRAC University premises earlier this month. BRAC University Computer Club (BUCC), in collaboration with CloudCamp Bangladesh organised the event “Meet Coders Trust, Developers of the world and Morten Lund, Co-Investor of Skype.” Their aim was to introduce and promote a new innovative approach to micro-financing education and to develop the technological expertise of students. This would in turn equip them to participate on the global technological job front as freelancers. CEO of Coders Trust, Ferdinand Kjaerulff, and the company’s developers from around the world arranged an elaborate question and answer session with Morten Lund at the event. Sharing the inspiring story on how he stumbled onto founding Coders Trust and then collaborating with Morten Lund, Ferdinand said: “There would be problems everywhere; it is the ability to identify them that makes you stand apart from others. No idea is small. You just need to pitch it in whenever you get the opportunity and mould it into something better with the feedback

and constructive criticism you get from people, and one day you will realise that you have come a long way.” Morten Lund was expected to be present at the event. However, due to some personal problems he had to return to Denmark. But he made up for his absence and demonstrated the benefits of programme when he showed up over Skype to be there even when he wasn’t. He shared his ideology on when and where to invest and the attributes he looks for in an individual before welcoming him or her on his board. While answering questions from Fayaz Taher, ceo of Fortuna, also a notable entrepreneur and investor of startup companies in Bangladesh, Lund emphasised that millions of IT jobs are offered on a daily basis via online work portals, but freelancers in Bangladesh need the right qualifications to solve the tasks. “Our approach redefines the concept of virtual education and ties young people’s online education directly to the demands of the global online job markets, creating freelancing micro entrepreneurs and fostering sustainable economic growth locally in Bangladesh. “You really need to work hard, and make your presence felt. You need to be determined. Extremely determined because this determination is what is going to drive you and motivate you in dark times,” added Lund. CEO of Coders Trust, Ferdinand

Kjaerulff said usually completely new ideas are the biggest ones. He presented a slide show on how to set up a profile online to get a freelancing job and start earning straight away. “If you are good enough, nothing can hold you back,” he said. Open for all, the event remained vibrant with presence of students from different universities and representatives of different companies. As the event came to a closing, Annajiat Alim Rasel, adviser, BUCC and Md Shamsul Kaonain, co-adviser, BUCC thanked everyone for their participation and making the event successful. Coders Trust is an initiative backed by the development fund Danida, or Danish International Development Agency, to provide microfinance for

The team is currently operating in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where it collaborates with Grameen Bank, which is renowned for its part in revolutionising the microfinance industry. Skype seed funder Morten Lund has also invested in the company Coders Trust. Who’s it gonna be? “Archie” – the name itself is enough to bring up an array of memories and emotions from our childhood days, which were spent tagging along with the story of the 17 year old, redhead, Archie Andrews. Created in 1941, Archie, is a fictional character in the American comic book series, “Archie comics” - A classic romantic comedy that still remains a worldwide favourite. There was way too much suspense revolving around Archie and his high school life back in Riverdale, with the forever plot-twisting romance and love triangle between Archie, the sweet girlnext-door, Betty Cooper and the rich, snooty, Veronica Lodge. The franchise

has finally answered the question of “Who will Archie choose?” and had published a mini-series in book format “Archie: The Married Life,” in response to clamouring fans. Story written by Michael Uslan and sketches drawn by artists Stan Goldberg and Bob Smith, the six-part story looks into the future of a once teen Archie; following his college years and when Archie makes his ultimate decision to marry, Veronica Lodge, or is it Betty Cooper? Called “The Archie Story of the Century,” it unravels a delicious storyline with a twist not worth missing. Faizah Aziz

Jorge Cham, former instructor and research associate at Caltech, depicts the worries of university students in his comic strip “Piled Higher and Deeper Comics,” popularly known as PhD Comics. As mentioned in the site “The popular comic strip is about life (or the lack thereof) in Academia.” Basically he explores the moans and groans, both on the part of teachers and students, when it comes to learning, teaching, submitting/ defending their theses, and doing everything that gets them out of each other’s hair. The artwork is neat, and

the humour is something that all university students can relate to. You can give credit to Jorge Cham for sympathising with the student kind he speaks of a mind-numbing scenario that a student has to put up with, till he/she graduates. He speaks of the never ending cycle of both parties ie student and teacher that is existent in pretty much every corner of the world. This is the kind of webcomic, one would want to read after a dull day at school. PhD Comics are available for reading at www.phdcomics.com

I didn’t know either. I first came across Archie comics at my friends’ houses, where I found its collections on their shelves. I was never into comics so I flipped through them without paying much attention. A distant relative once gifted me a Tarzan comic book when I was seven. Besides the black and white sketches of a wild Tarzan which bored me immensely, I didn’t understand which speech bubble came after which. I guess that’s what irritated and confused me most about comics. In addition to that, my parents preferred books so they encouraged me to read them over comics. Little did I know that while I was engrossed in Enid Blytons’ and Nancy Drews, my friends were enjoying the beloved Archie comics. A close friend of mine said she used to stay up at night reading and rereading the comics, solving the crosswords, and trying to copy the drawings. In one word, it was addictive to most. I first noticed Archie this year, when a buzz about Archie dying started. I found out that it was created in 1941, based on the popular teen

actor Mickey Rooney from the Andy Hardy movies of 1930s (who looked quite like Richie Rich, if I may add). There was even a radio show called “The Adventures of Archie” back in the 1940s to 50s. In the 60s, Archie emerged as a superhero too, but it was cancelled due to unpopularity. There were even Archie comics to promote Christianity among teens in the 1970s! From 1969, about six Archie TV series were aired, but even they didn’t fare as well as the comics. Luckily, there’s a new one releasing, called “It’s Archie.” In 1990, an Archie movie was also released called “Archie: To Riverdale and Back Again.” Then there was the Archie adult horror series, “Afterlife with Archie.” In 2010, the first gay character, Kevin Keller was introduced in the series, leading the issue to be reprinted for the first time in 73 years! So now that Archie is dying, what now? Well, a new series called “The Diary of the Girl Next Door,” from Betty’s point of view, is soon hitting the markets. After missing out on Archie for so long, I think it’s finally time I get a hold of these comics! Namira Shameem

Today is My Day Sitting on the wooden bench, I stared across the street. I saw him with Cherry once again. “Hey! Come here, I packed your favourite sandwich today. And guess what? I also got a packet of tartar sauce. Remember you told me you like it?” I said. He looked at me when he heard this. He was proceeding towards me. We would have had lunch together if Cherry would not have held his arms so tightly that he could not free himself. They were standing at a distance, so I could not hear what she whispered. Whatever it was, it changed his mind and he said: “Sorry, I can’t join you today. How about tomorrow?” I was mad, not at him, but at Cherry. My brain refused to utter a single word, so I chose to nod instead. I saw him stride away with her. I felt a force pulling him back, towards me, but Cherry didn’t allow him to give me one last glance. I ended up spending the evening alone in the park, eagerly waiting for the next morning. When it did arrive, I was not sure about what I should do. “Should I call him?” I thought out loud. “Maybe I should just wait for his call.” The phone rang few minutes later and we met up at the arcade. I saw Cherry staring at us, with a crushed face. I chose to look through her, because that day was my day with him and I would not let anyone spoil that for us. Khatidja Hussein

The first single, “Locked Out of Heaven” created waves like an earthquake doing 9.5 on the richter scale. This single was co-written and produced by the most celebrated English musician of modern times, Mark Ronson. Apparently, Mark was on his honeymoon when he got the offer to work with Bruno Mars. What intrigued him the most was the fact that Bruno wanted the song to sound exactly the opposite of the expected Mark and Bruno collaboration. This song spawned upon the US Billboard Hot 100 and topped the list. The record explores a fine variety of reggae rock, disco pop and soul music along with more explicit lyrics and themes compared to Bruno’s first album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans. A melodically rich album that went to receiving the Grammy Awards for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2014 annual ceremony. The record was made available for free streaming a week before its release. Atlantic Records really boosted Bruno Mars’ credentials as a musician, especially with the release of this album. Bruno claims that he took his time in making this album, as a sense of freedom can be felt whilst listening to the Unorthodox Jukebox. Accredited producers such as The Smeezingtons, Jeff Bhasker, Benny Blanco and others enriched this album with their distinctive expertise. The countless accolades speak for themselves about the five star quality of the Unorthodox Jukebox. If you haven’t yet gotten acquainted with this marvelous record, make sure you do so in the coming days. Some of the other lush singles that stand out are “When I was your man,” “Treasure,” “Gorilla” and “Young Girls.” Zaki Adnan

WE RECOMMEND Gadget Hunt

For the Love of Bass Deep bass is becoming increasingly easier to produce but most headphones don’t yield much quality or substance; everything that’s suppose to be there, is there, but yet you find something lacking. You’d have to lighten your pocket to a great extent to fulfil that peculiar void; your ears maybe happy with that decision but your wallet most certainly wouldn’t. Skullcandy is here to ensure that you get the best of both worlds - hauntingly magnificent sound and a price range that doesn’t ask for your head on a platter. Enter Skullcandy Skullcrusher; it will blow your mind away, maybe quite literally. Ergonomically designed and skilfully crafted, this pair of headphones will sit snugly on your head ensuring optimal comfort and substantial noise

TV

Suburgatory is one of those interesting little sitcoms that catches the audience’s attention through “slice of life” scenarios and putting awareness out in the open with splashes of nuance, snark, sweetness, and of course, comedy. This series is the sequel to an incident where a 16-year-old Tessa Altman (Jane Levy) can’t convince her singleparent father George Altman (Jeremy Sisto) that the condoms which were discovered in her drawer were not

isolation. When not in use, you can fold it and stash it away without a hitch. As the name suggests, these headphones pack quite a punch. With an adjustable bass amplifier and featuring the first in its line, built in vibrating subwoofers in speaker, this bad boy will inject the music right into your head! Needless to say, all these features require a considerable amount of power but surprisingly all that power is delivered using just one double-A battery! These headphones are available at all Gadget & Gear outlets for Tk5,900. You don’t have to sell your soul to the devil to afford this. Then again, it’s not exactly cheap either, hence durability is a major factor and Skullcandy as usual, has delivered the Skullcrusher. ASM fOYSAL

Goodbye, Washington Square Park actually hers. George, always believed that he had done a good job raising his daughter without his wife . But he freaks out over the condoms and the thought that his once a little girl is growing up “all too fast” in the big city. So he moves her to the suburbs where she, needless to say, doesn’t fit in and immediately hates all she sees as if it’s hell (obvious from the word play; Suburb purgatory, Suburgatory). But she especially hated Dalia Oprah Royce (Carly Chaikin), a high school Barbie doll who thinks Tessa is into girls; only because she wears boots! It might not seem to matter, but in a world where lives are ruled by social networks, well, you can guess. But Tessa knew that she wasn’t the only one having a hard time adjusting

and that sort of gave her some peace and stability. Although, her father’s troubles were on a different level, ones that might drastically change her own life, and her nemesis, Dalia’s. And that, should be left for you to find out. But besides the plot, what makes the show more entertaining is that Jane Levy is actually perfect for the role of Tessa. She’s not only got the role down, she’s also got the facial expressions to actually complement her disdain for the world she finds herself in. It is as if the character has been weaved around her own personality! All in all, it is a good show to humour you with. And who knows, maybe some might even pick up a thing or two on how a daughter should be raised Khandokar Ashif uz Zaman

Rehashing the past There’s little which can cause flashbacks of old memories like high school reunions, and it does it with a punch! That’s what “Archie: To Riverdale and Back Again” is all about; a trip down memory lane. Much changes over the years, and impairs the balance of friend circles with it. Archie is young no more, but engaged to Pam, is to become a successful lawyer and moving to the “the big city.” Betty is a high school teacher with a bossy boyfriend ordering her around. Veronica has been divorced four times, and has moved to France after graduation. A divorced man with a boy, psychiatrist Jughead has also changed with the times, while Moose and Midge are happily married with a son. Before the “big city” transit, Archie returns home to attend his high school reunion; but little does he know everything was about to change. As ever, seeing Betty and Veronica breaks open the dam of emotions, and feelings of longing comes flooding back. On the other hand, Pop’s soda shop is about to get demolished, and Archie must save it. Would he be able to help Pop’s? Can he control his feelings for Betty and Veronica, and retain his love for Pam? That’s one tale worth knowing till the end. Take a look! Rad Sharar

Listology

The love triangle There are times you want to strangle your best friend for having the hots for the same guy. Keep the catfight out of this, be gracious and ease yourself out of this triangle, the TMAG way Natasha Rahman

It takes two to tango Your best friend may be crying buckets, trying to explain “it was an accident” but we all know better than that. Dont curse the girl for coming on to him, or for batting her eyelashes; if he had shrugged off her advances, you guys could still have been in your “fairytale.” Instead of hating on her and clinging to your promiscuous boy, tell them both to roll over and play dead, because as far as you are concerned, these two have dug the grave for themselves.

History repeating itself Once, twice, thrice! If this isn’t the first time that your best friend has snagged your guy, then either you have been really misfortunate or your best friend just knows how to turn her game on! Strangely, she finds a way to calm him down when you are on his case, lightly graze his arm, and check up on him at night; all in the pretense of trying to fix your relationship. Once your guy is cooing about her, she makes him look like the jerk, provokes your anger, and makes you kick him to the curb. These “besties” acquire a perverse sense of satisfaction just knowing that they can steal another’s man. And, you, my dear, need a new best friend!

The triangle You want him; he wants your best friend. Now, you could be the bigger person and let your friend have him. But would you be willing to let go of the guy who makes the butterflies fly in your stomach? The only way to save face in this messy triangle is to snap out of this triangle. If this is your best friend, then she should mean more to you than a Brad Pitt look alike, right? Ah, the dilemmas of life!
