TMAG’s Room of the week!

Funk up your room bigstock

“This photo shows how animals keep you company when you are, perhaps, studying for an upcoming exam or making a doodle on your study table. It also tells you how much the owner of the room is fond of fishes and music; a combination much unique.”

home sweet home Many of us consider pets as members of the family and shower them with infinite love. Therefore, like every other member, your pet ought to have a room for herself/himself. That way they’ll learn to spend time alone when you’re absent. TMAG’s here with some ideas that you could use to design your pet’s crib

Name

Nahian Shah Area

Uttara

Spare bedrooms, finished basements and laundry rooms or verandas are definitely good choices. The chosen place should have easy access so that your pet can enter and leave under any circumstance. It would be wise if you avoid carpetting the floor. Instead, use tile flooring as you may need to clean up their mess from time to time. Painting the walls with plastic or semi-glossy paint is a good idea as it makes your job much easier when wiping off dirt, paw and nose marks. However, the colour should be lively, bright and animal friendly. You can also add some characters on the wall that will make your pet feel like they have company. Don’t forget to put up a nicely framed photo of you and your pet.

If you love your pet more than anything, you can try looking for designer pet furniture such as fancy canopy beds and armoires online. Do not forget to throw in a comfy couch for them to spend their lazy hours. If you’re planning to create a pet zone in your room, make sure your belongings are out of their reach because they just love to steal and chew. Last but not least, identifying potential safety hazards is very crucial for your pets’ well being. Things such as using cord cover, childproof caps, keeping small metallic stuff in secure boxes should be maintained. Congratulations! You just created a place which is both secure and joyful for your friend. Saudia Afrin

FYI

Compassion for the companion Let’s not neglect these friends who unconditionally love us. It’s time we took proper care of them Pets provide us with the little joys and emotional comfort when there is no one else. If you ever feel low and lonely, then take a little time from your busy life to play and interact with your pet cat. It will give you the peace of mind that you can’t seem to find and brighten up your day. Initially, it’s really difficult to potty train your cat or dog. Whatever you do, don’t blame or scold them, it won’t get you anywhere. A writer would like to share his opinion here from his personal experience with his kitty: “Observe your pet closely, when he/she has to answer nature’s call they will start digging which comes to them by instinct. Before they can

TM AG th u rsDAY, Septe m b e r 1 1, 2014

finish this on your precious floor or carpet, pick him/her up and place them in their litter box or the toilet seat. After a month of repeating the process they’ll get the idea and before you know it, they will go all by themselves.” Kittens and puppies are cute adorable menaces. They tend to scratch and gnaw shoes, bags and other stuff which you least expect them to play

with. Punishing them or scolding them won’t repair the damage done, but it’s about time you learnt how to control the damage. If your pet has tussled and left your shoes shredded and destroyed while you were not looking, punishing will not teach him not to do it again. He may have forgotten about the incident by then, and think of you as a torturous master. Rather, if you catch him red handed, be stern and tell him not to do it. You have to be gentle and tolerant with them. If he leaves a mess, take him to the very spot immediately and make him understand that what he did was wrong and he shouldn’t do it again. Let’s be kind and patient with our pets. It’s not much to ask of ourselves for the love they give us, or is it? ehsan sunny

Keep em busy! You are at school and your fluff ball is sulking at home. Even they need to keep their hands full. If you don’t want to come home to a destroyed couch, chewed-up slippers or a blistered carpet, read on to find out TMAG’s solutions for taming your furball Toy story Remember, animals are almost like human babies! What you can do is, buy different kinds of toys for them; chewing toys, squeaky toys, fluffy toys and Kong toys. Kong toys have special treats or flavoured pastes inside them. Therefore, your pet can get a taste of their favourite treats as well as get their daily dose of nutrition while they play with the toy. Also, hide treats in bowls for them all around the house; almost like a treasure hunt, sniff sniff! If you dont have a Kong toy, you can cut up a football, make a small hole in it and fill it up with your pet’s favourite treat.

Date night Find out if you have neighbours or friends who own pets. Get a play date for your pet. If that is not an ideal option, you can always make a puppy face and ask your parents for another pet to play with your lonely little munchkin. There’s no harm in emotionally blackmailing your parents for a good cause right? Visual delights Believe it or not, animals love watching TV. You can always keep the TV or the radio on. You can turn on channels like animal planet or discovery. They always like looking at their own kind.

Keep them on their toes Animals love exercises, be it running, tug of war, fetching, jumping, or anything that has to do with being active. You can request your family members, siblings, driver, maid or even your neighbours to play with your pet, while you’re at school. Lastly, if you are one of those early birds, you can take your dog for a run or play with your cat to tire them out before you leave. This way they’ll rest until you come home and be on their good behaviour. Tarannum Mahmood

Foxy! Instead of expecting a human side from our beloved pets, why not flash them a piece of our animal side? A furry fandom, in this case, would do just the trick! What is it? In all essence, it is dressing up as animals and acting like them, in an adorable fashion. But lets not start scratching random people’s backs just yet. Give these wild trends a shot first Available online in almost every colour, match them with the animal of your choice and pounce out. Ears Little averts more eyes at a party than a gorgeous dress with fluffy ears. Foxy! Yes, you can get those fox ears too, or even make custom ear sets as well. Tails Furry cat tails may not be the best option to wear on a casual basis; mothers might faint. But those mini bunny tails are adorable with the right dress.

This week’s look is very cute and simple. The red dress goes perfectly with her simple cat-eyes and nude lips. On her side is a black shoulder purse to carry “all things necessary.” Her flat pumps and cute hairband makes the look even more wearable

Tees Nothing else clearly portrays the beast inside you than a paw print on your tee!

Accessories Fur key chains and rings have become quite popular nowadays, especially when you want to stroke them against your face. Stylish and very comfortable, they come in very handy for daily use. Unfortunately, furry accessories don’t have specialised shops yet, therefore most are available online. Ebay, antrowear.com, and zazzle.com, are good places to start looking. Rad Sharar

Cuddles presentable for family huddles Most of us take our pets for granted. We may think that by providing them better living standards and three meals a day, we have done them a huge favour Luckily for us these innocent animals have little wants and love us for the little we do for them. But, here are a few things that you can buy or make for your pet just to let them feel more special, a little. Who will bell the cat? Colourful collars with a bell will enhance the look of your kitten or puppy, and the chimes give you the peace of mind that your pet is safe, be it inside the house or somewhere he shouldn’t be otherwise (maybe stealing food from the kitchen). Because killing is funny? Most of us are aware of how cruel street people and children can be. They would injure an innocent animal without any reason. Therefore ID tags on your cat or dog is essential. If your pet ever wanders off into the streets, you can at least hope that someone might return her/him to your loving embrace.

Keep your dog on a leash Leashes are important for every dog owner, to keep them from hurting or scaring off visitors from your home. Plus, whenever you want to take your dog out for a walk you can always keep him/her close to you ensuring they don’t scamper away. The gentleman Bows and socks look perfectly adorable and charming on your puppy or kitten. Say you’re having a dinner event at home where everyone is dressed accordingly, why should your pet be left out? Put on a pair of socks and tie a bow and they will definitely stand out. Our pets love us even if we don’t do these small things for them. They might not comprehend that we’re doing this to show that we love them. Nonetheless, you should play your part completely as they are doing theirs. Ehsan Sunny bigstock

HOROSCOPE Aries (Mar 21-Apr 19)

If you’re under a lot of peer pressure, it’s definitely time to go out and meet new people. Remember not to throw away the old ones though. Taurus (Apr 20-May 20)

Are you being honest with yourself about your motivations? Or is this just a scheme to make others finish your work for you?

The Morgan 3 Wheeler; two cylinders, no doors and absolutely enticing

Ok, so technically you can’t really call it a car. But after an exposure to the Morgan 3 Wheeler, you are bound to fall in love with it. Its charms might be simple or even crude, but it is most certainly irresistible. Two cylinders, no doors and a curb weight around 600kgs! Yes, yes, we all know that minimal specs are often the best route to maximum fun. But three wheels. Really? That is unquestionably taking the concept of reduction a little too literally. When it comes to three-wheel motion, there’s a world of difference between the right and wrong placement. The most absurd way is to have the single wheel at the front like that of the Reliant Robin, which happens to have a reputation for toppling-over. However, the right way is to put the singleton at the rear, which was put into practice by Morgan from 1919 to 1950. And 60 years later, it’s back again. But why bring back the Morgan 3 Wheeler

at all? Since, in terms of practicality, it’s basically useless. Now, you might be tempted to think that since it has a lightweight skeletal; it would be classified as the kind of car that the critics like to call a “track-day weapon.” Hold your thought right there! The fact is any four-wheeler would run rings around you in just about any corner. Instead, where this car shows its overwhelming magical spell is in turning a bland road drive, at sane road speeds, into something memorable and exhilarating. Indeed a happy time for you, and for those who see you pass by. Spanning over the front wheels is a 2.0-litre V-twin from a Wisconsin bike. The peak torque on it is at 3,250rpm and it’s nothing short of violent at full song. The output is passed to a five-speed gearbox borrowed from the Mazda MX-5, via a belt to the rear wheel. There’s no need for a differential when there’s just one rear wheel. The motor shudders into life with a typical chugga-chug-chugga idle of a

big V-twin. Even though early cars had higher outputs, this form of production makes roughly 80HP at the rear wheel. Surely, it isn’t normally the stuff of an eye-watering performance, but your eyes do water, partly because of the wind whooshing on your face, and mostly because the whole car weighs less than 600kgs. Morgan claims that it will do 0-60mph in under six seconds! What makes it even more joyful is that 60 feels like 80 or even 100 inside it. The rest is up to you to imagine what its 115mph estimated top speed would feel like. Then there’s the noise, the air stream, the intimate ride, the smell of hot oil, and the sight of front fenders bobbing up and down in your peripheral vision. It’s definitely not the tidiest way to travel, but it sure puts a broad smile on your face. Is it a sane mode of transport? Hardly! Is it the fastest way to get around? Definitely not! Is it a lifeaffirming recreation? Absolutely! Tahsin Momin

Leo (Jul 23-Aug 22)

You need to let the people close to your heart know about what you need. Assert your individuality and others may do the same. But that’s all part of the deal. Virgo (Aug 23- Sep 22)

You have everything you need to get everything you want from life and love. Enjoy it while it lasts. Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22)

It’s almost like you’re looking at the world from someone else’s eyes. Harness that creativity and put it to good use. Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21)

You’re surrounded by voices of people close to your heart. However, it’s now time to block them out and look closer to the one that comes from within. Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21)

Take the time to break away from binding ties, even for just a little while, and use that to experience new things in life. Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19)

It is time to come up with a more aggressive savings plan, new job or a promotion. Either way, you have it in you to face everything that’s headed your way. Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18)

The difficult feelings will pass soon. You’ll get all your answers. Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20)

You love a certain level of escapism. But don’t run away now. Stay grounded on reality and see what happens.

That warm, fuzzy love

TMAG indulges in it’s love for pets

What your pet teaches you There is something that makes our bond with our furries last a lifetime. It’s time we stop looking at our pets, and instead see and learn to stack up qualities that would make us a tad bit more amazing! Compassion When Edgar Allan Poe’s wife was bedridden, stuck in a room dying of tuberculosis, Catarina, their tortoiseshell cat, was her constant companion. She carefully jumped up on the bed and snuggled near his wife. No condolences, no obligations, Catarina was there by her side purely out of a love one feels for their dear ones. Responsibility and multitasking It’s so easy to blurt out “so much to do, so little time” as an excuse, but when you have a muffin to feed and nurture back home, that excuse won’t get you anywhere. According to Forbes, Martha Stewart, who is one of the most powerful business women in the world, manages her business and her pets at home. And she doesn’t have one, but 11 animals to tend to; her four dogs and seven cats. While our plates our stuffed with schoolwork and friends and family,

TM AG th u rsDAY, Septe m b e r 1 1, 2014

a pet calls for a lot of attention and care. Having one means keeping tabs on vet appointments, shower time, food habits, toilet training, and that list could drag on. A pet is a full time job, there is no way you can weasel your way out of that without making your chosen animal ill and desolate. Reading muted emotions Pets have a myriad of ways of expressing what they want. They may bark to warn you, but they may also bark just because they are happy to see you. Or sometimes, your pet may make a noise which means they are angry or a noise that means they want to sleep. According to Colleen Safford, who is a Dogtime expert writing for dogtime.com, says, “When your dog licks his lips (and not right in front of the food dish), he is telling you he is rather uncomfortable.” Hence, a true pet lover will notice and learn to understand these signs and signals that their pet is trying to communicate to them. This only helps us be more intuitive, understanding, and patient in our everyday lives; qualities that only make our relationships more awesome. Natasha Rahman

What does your choice of pet say about you? From the clothes you wear to even the most subtle twitch, a person is continuously broadcasting their thoughts, emotions and their personality. When picking out the perfect pet, the choice definitely reveals something about the person, while keeping a certain type of companion animal also influences the person’s personality over time. So what exactly does your choice of pets reveal about you? According to a research published by Dailymail UK, dogs are the most popular pets kept by animal lovers around the world. Men and dogs have been linked since the prehistoric ages. Dogs, or grey wolves, as was the norm at the time, helped man secure his borders, herd animals and hunt. In exchange, they received food and shelter from their human companions. In a more recent setting, dogs help provide security, protection and pick up women (hunting?). So, not much has changed. According to the research, most dog owners describe themselves as hard working and neat. To properly maintain a dog can often be a lot of work. A happy dog needs a lot of attention from their human companions in terms of

feeding, bathing, being taken out for walks and spending quality playtime with. The pattern in dog owners reveal that they’re usually early risers, outgoing and do not shy away from taking on a lot of responsibilities. Cats, the second most popular companion animal, have helped man keep rodents and pests under control over the ages. Cats are exceptionally smart animals and tend to be independent, clean and self maintaining. The pattern amongst cat owners reveal they’re usually introverted people and are often lazy or untidy. Cat owners are likely to be laid back, who spend a lot of time lying around the house, love being night owls (just like their nocturnal companions) and tend to be shy at times. Rabbits, the furry little critters related more closely to horses than rodents (believe it or not), are another cute and fun animals kept as pets. Rabbit owners also tend to be quite laid back people, often creative, while some tend to be scatterbrains. So what does your pet reveal about you? The Truth about Cats and Dogs (well, mostly just dogs) Kikki. She is an adorable, loveworthy and loyal pup, unlike most of my human friends. There may be people who are not fond of dogs as much as I am but there also subsist people among us who express their disgust towards dogs based on unfounded superstitions, which is extremely sad. This week’s hot topic talks about all the virtues of a pet and specifically brings to light some of the many stigmas related to dogs that give them a bad rep. That’s so racist! A majority of times, we get so immersed in the media that we buy whatever baloney they sell us. Many films and television shows portray black dogs as aggressive, pit bulls as demonic creatures and so on. A similar phenomenon is called the big black dog syndrome where potential owners associate the color black with evil or misfortune which tends to reflect on their choice of dog. A study conducted by Los Angeles Animal Services argued that only 28% of adopted dogs are black, which goes to show

that appearance plays a significant role in adopting a dog. Did you know that Tamara Delaney, an early activist, created a website called Black Pearl Dogs back in 2004 which got the limelight soon after? A matter of faith In many Muslim countries, you will hear far less barking around the neighbourhood than you’ll find in non Muslim countries. When arguing their case, many zealous practitioners of the faith may refer to a statement in hadith which translates; “If a dog licks the vessel of any one of you, let him throw away whatever was in it and wash it seven times.” Now that’s very logical indeed, but where exactly does it encourage us to show disgrace by calling this loyal beast “haram?” What if it was a person instead? Shouldn’t it make the person haram as well if we go by the same misinterpretation? Sheikh Abdul Latif Berry, leader of the first American Muslim Marja’iya said that any family, Muslim or otherwise, may own a dog as long as they are

being well-groomed, vaccinated and cleaned. Moreover, Berry talks about the existence of rights that a dog has earned in Islam and that they should not be oppressed. Speaking of charity Kikki loves milk and bread for breakfast. One fine morning, I went out to buy bread for her. Since the bread pieces were unusually tiny in size, a curious neighbour of mine walked up to me and asked, “Who is this bread for?” “Greetings, that’s for my dog actually,” I replied. “Your dog?” he exclaimed in disgrace. “There are poor people starving in this country and you spend all your money feeding a dog?” Immediately, I lost all my respect for that person. I agree that there are people starving and I’ll feel more than lucky to be able to help them. But feeding and sheltering a dog is as big an act of charity as helping any underprivileged person. SUPERTEACHER How many of us really turn back to recall the contributions made by our teachers in our lives? But eventually, we grow up to learn that, like all our parents, teachers would always want our well-being. To recognise their hard work, the Varkey GEMS Foundation has launched the “Global Teacher Prize” The Varkey GEMS Foundation is a non-profit organisation whose aim is to improve the standards of education for underprivileged children. Their recent project, the Global Teacher Prize, allows students to help their respective teachers attain international recognition for their outstanding contributions in the society. We can help them participate by nominating our favourite teachers for the “Global Teacher Prize” and also help them win an amount of $1m. The set of criteria on the basis of which the winners will be chosen includes their

achievements inside and outside the classroom, preparing students to become proactive around the globe, indulging students in innovative learning through instructions and demonstrations and also developing and sharing innovative quality teaching and education for all students. Besides,

the panel of judges will also be looking at their contributions to public debate on raising the bar of the teaching profession and thus encouraging others to pursue the profession. The

winner will be chosen by the prominent Global Teacher Prize Academy made up of head-teachers, educational experts, commentators, journalists, public officials, tech entrepreneurs, company directors and scientists from around

the world. Akanksha, Fidal, PwC, TeachPitch, Teach UAE magazine, and Womensphere are partners with Varkey GEMS Foundation in the search for the best teachers. To nominate, all you need to do is fill in a simple application form at www. globalteacherprize.org. The deadline for application is October 5. In Search of the Best Business Minds moments of panic in the teams who made it to the finals. Round 1: In the first round teams were required to think of sustainable strategies, making use of Unilever brands to solve social issues. Among more than 100 entries, only 10 emerged winners (one team per campus) and a 11th team was chosen via the wild card entry. Team House Stark from Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) bagged the wild card entry making the 11th team to make it to round 2. The most talked about business competition, Unilever BizMaestros has just completed its fifth season. Through this competitive platform, every year Unilever Bangladesh connects with the top campuses in the country, identifying high performing and aspiring graduates. Deserving students from each campus then obtain the opportunity to experience the “thrill of real business.” It officially began with Unilever Bangladesh visiting the top business schools of the country comprising of BRAC, East West University, North South University, Independent University – Bangladesh, Institute of Business Administration – University of Dhaka, Business Faculty – University of Dhaka,

Jahangirnagar University, Khulna University and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology to announce the challenge for round 1 and call for submissions. The three round competition then unfolded amid a lot of energy, rivalry, euphoric moments of success and

Round 2: In the second round each team was required to design an activation plan which would allow their chosen category to develop its market (by obtaining more users or increasing the products usage). This round was held at Spectra Convention Center on the August 27 where the top 11 teams were called upon to select one of the categories from food, conditioner and face-wash. The teams were then armed with category knowledge as brand managers took them through informative cases and presentations. They were provided a day and a half, a budget of Tk5,000 and a

graphic designer to design a market development plan for their chosen category, carefully noting the reasoning behind every decisions they took. The plan developed by each of the top 11 teams were then presented in the finals. Grand finale: The intense clash of creativity began on the BizMaestroes finale stage on September 2 at Hotel Lake Shore. The top 11 presented their campaign along with visual demonstrations of their activation plan. From live drama to live cooking show, the teams flooded the stage with their creativity, making it extremely difficult for the judges to select the top three. However, there could only be one winner. Team BUP grabbed the title of 2nd runners-up winning the opportunity to visit Unilever Bangladesh’s manufacturing site in Chittagong; team Department of Chemical Engineering, BUET won the 1st runners-up title winning a confirmed internship with the company. The champions of the event, team IBA – Jahangirnagar University went home with the grand prize of representing Bangladesh in the global Unilever competition, Future Leaders League, scheduled to be held in London, UK in March 2015. n

What makes us human It might be weird to talk about robotics in an issue devoted to pets and animals, but it is worth considering. If our lives at present have become so hectic, so routine, that having and maintaining a pet involves far more sacrifices and commitment than it did even five years back, it isn’t hard to imagine a future like those sci-fi movies, with more robots and cyborgs than actual people and animals. Jack Heath’s “Replica” explores the idea of what makes us human in this dystopian sci-fi thriller. Chloe, an average teenager, wakes up one morning to discover that she’s not even human anymore, residing as separate parts in some sadistic scientist’s lab. Worse still, she doesn’t even remember how this came to pass. Thus begins a fast-paced

Fiction

conspiracy thriller that doesn’t relent until the very end. It’s hard to provide more details without giving away some major spoilers in this twisty tale. Pros: The opening chapters are some of the most gripping ones written in recent years. The plot twists come thick and fast, and the stakes are constantly raised to create a feeling of breathless suspense. Cons: Some might find that the pacing doesn’t allow for Chloe’s character to be fleshed out to a satisfactory degree. Others may find the ending to be a let-down, with too many loose ends, although this may just be because there’s a sequel in the making. TMAG’s verdict: Worth a try if you want a gripping, fast read. No Words Needed Zola woke up to find Zareb on the tree again. Even after three years, watching Zareb gliding from tree to tree left Zola speechless; his motion was smooth, as if the random positioning of the leaves and branches made no difference to him. Zola never met her parents; she had spent most of her years with her sister, Phanise, but malaria snatched her sister away from her, three years back. That was around the time she found Zareb, who by now, had become the closest being she had; her best friend. Although Phanise took Zola’s voice away with her, Zareb gave her a ray of hope. Be it accompanying Zola around the forest in search of food, or simply being there when she needed someone,

Zareb did everything he could. But there was one thing Zareb could not do, and that was to become Zola’s voice. Of course, no one understood Zareb’s hisses, so there was no hope of him translating her to the world. But, whatever he could do was enough. His and Zola’s ways of communicating to the world were similar. They observed, felt and gave their reactions through actions. No words were ever needed, probably because they learnt to live their lives that way. For Zareb it was easier, as he was a snake, but as for Zola, she felt different from her kind. But she had Zareb and that was enough reassurance for her to understand that it was okay to not be able to speak. Khatidja Hussein

Looking back at myself

For most of my life, I knew I had a problem controlling my anger. Sadly, I hadn’t any clue how bad it was. My belief was that the anger oozing out is for other people to deal with. Shallow, isn’t it? What could possibly go wrong? The timing couldn’t be more impeccable. My wife had filed for a divorce with me just two days before my birthday. After 14 years of a somewhat good marriage, why now? Well she was doing everything she could to make this marriage work. I was just a lazy bum, unemployed for over two years. The economy has been hard on us. So I asked her, why now? She broke down in tears like a building does after getting hit by an airstrike. She claimed that I tend to take out my rage on her very often, usually over insignificant matters. She felt like she was walking on eggshells, desperate to make the marriage work. All this to me was like lightning striking down on a cloudy day. She added that I even take out my anger on our two sons, both of whom, I deeply love. Turns out they were in the same boat as their mother. Have I really forsaken myself? Have I succumbed to the fiery depths of my anger, to a point that I relinquished what is most important to me - my family? I need help. Syed Azraf Zaman

The colourful doughnut gracing the cover of Holychild’s “Mindspeak” EP indicates that the songs are each a piece of delicacy, with some coloured, funky sprinkles and a serious flavour underneath With the bouncy pop tone and the vibrantly colourful videos of their first EP, one might assume that Mindspeak doesn’t have a message for its listeners, but that is when one would terribly go wrong! Beside the LA duo Liz Nistico and Louie Diller, the album showcases some great pop music, where their dedications to the songs are apparent. The pair met in 2011, and created music which they themselves have termed “weird.” Within a year, after posting some of their original songs on Soundcloud, they signed for Glassnote Records and now share a manager

with Grouplove. They have garnered a massive number of fans and critics for their songs. Mindspeak features four incredible tunes which will hopefully lead this duo towards stardom. The album kicks off with “Happy With Me” which is a blissful and cool song in the most cheesiest of ways. The music is vibrant; it makes you groove from the very first second. The song is euphoric and the melody seems familiar and yet very welcoming. “Playboy Girl” invokes greater images of objectification, where the lyrics talk about make-up, and has a very rock, girl-power sound to it. The next doughnut in the box is “Every Time

I Fall,” which really brings a breath of fresh air to the listeners. The song is big, fun and has layers of meaning to it. It is arguably the strongest of the four and gives off a notion of empowerment. The list ends with “Pretend Believe,” the last song on the EP, which is a perfect wrap up for the album. It has upbeat music and in essence is a powerful song. Mindspeak is colourful, but sometimes all its glamour hinders the feminist message of the lyrics. And yet, the vocals and the vibrant music make it thrilling to the ears. Lameya Alma Amin

Mighty as the Mighty Kong! The “Mighty Kong” is an animated musical comic adaptation of the classic “King Kong” of 1993. However, on a reasonable budget and a number of typical songs, the film came alive in 1998. Jodi Benson and Dudley Moore headed the team of voiceovers. The Mighty Kong reintroduces original songs by the Sherman Brothers. If you already are familiar with “King Kong,” you may be familiar with the animated version. Ann Darrow, a down-on-her-luck actress is looking for work and meets a flamboyant film director, Carl Denham, who offers her a job in a new movie. They board a ship to leave for the film shoot and the monkey that lives in the ship is a troublemaker. They finally arrive on the desired island, where the natives are being friendly to the crew but ask them to leave Ann as a token of sacrifice. Ann is then

sacrificed to the giant ape King Kong. Interestingly, Ann is not sacrificed by King Kong, rather, he fights against three dinosaurs to save Ann. So, what do you think? Why does King Kong save Ann instead of making her his delicacy? The film then diverts to Kong’s riot in New York City. In the original movie, King Kong takes Anne up on top of the Empire State Building, and the biplanes come to attack Kong with guns, but miss their shots most of the time. What happens next? Well, the animation may have the same ending as the original one or maybe there is a “but!” So, do you want to explore the “but?” What do you think will happen to the “Mighty Kong?” Let’s watch the anime to see the consequences of his “mightiness” and explore the special bonding between a human and an ape! How would you like to go back in time to relive the joys of those special moments and alter a series of bad calls for a better future? About Time is an exceptionally sweet, witty and brilliant romanticcomedy film written and directed by Richard Curtis, aka the creator of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and Notting Hill. It is basically a “chick flick” for men. The story is about a young adult Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) who gets to discover from his father that men in their family has the ability to travel through time. Tim can go back to the past except before the time of his birth and he can also time travel to the future. Knowing that he can alter what has happened in his own life, Tim decides to make his life better by amending the mistakes he made in the past. The story then

goes on to how he meets Mary (Rachel McAdams) and ultimately becomes successful in winning her heart after a lot of calculated time travels. Notwithstanding the fact that the movie has a bit of a glimpse of sci-fi flavour, it’s an amusing and touching love story. The acting and cast of the film is seemingly flawless. The concept of “butterfly effect” is well described and almost seamlessly illustrated. The plot has been criticised for being preposterous but nevertheless IMDB has given a rating of 7.8/10. If you’re trying to pick that romantic movie for your next movie-date with that special person then this movie should top your list. To the hopeless romantics, there is no harm in watching it and definitely worth your time. Ehsan Sunny

Third time’s a charm, maybe? Trophy Wife is a new family-focused comedy series aired in 2013 and produced by ABC Studios. Given the huge success of “Modern Family” ABC seems somewhat enthusiastic to expand into the realm of familycomedy type series and “Trophy Wife” makes that fact apparently obvious. They say that third time’s the charm, Kate (Malin Akerman), a former party girl, is hoping that the saying is true when she becomes the third wife of a middle-aged lawyer Pete (Bradley Whitford). Kate immediately finds herself dealing with two ex-wives and three stepchildren but she is determined to make the marriage work and become a part of the family at all cost. The story is seemingly typical but at the same time unusual. It humorously shows the troubles of newly wedded Kate. Diane, ex wife number one is a perfectionist doctor and mother of the teenagers Hillary and Warren. She disapproves of Kate and her lack of maternal instincts that usually develop after years of parenting. Jackie, ex wife number two and mother to adopted son Bert, on the other hand, has the ability to manipulate Pete. Hillary, overachieving step-daughter is having a hard time accepting Kate as step-mother in spite of Kate’s attempts to win her trust. And son Warren is suspected of having a crazy obsession over his dad’s new blonde and beautiful wife. Trophy Wife has been praised for its strong cast which has kept the audience attracted with its strange but classic family-drama plot, despite its lack of good humour. The story eventually grows on you and maybe it’s too early to condemn it. Ehsan Sunny

s y a s ays e H es Sh Are you a cat or a dog person? Shah Nahian While there’s a lot of truth in the average dog’s reputation for being loyal and obedient; the same can’t be said for the feline friends. Introducing pets as members of the family, we often forget that they’re animals and we shouldn’t treat them as human beings. However, in order to uncover the truth, one needs to look into the mentality and nature of these animals. Dogs are pack animals. They would rather be part of a strong pack than lead a weak onemaking them social and docile in most cases. Cats on the flip side are solitary animals. Feral cats live and hunt alone their entire lives. Introducing cats to a social

environment will not change the fact that it’s a cat. A cat will always be independent, learn to think for itself and grow up to be an exceptionally smart animalMUCH smarter than the average canine. In reality however, a cat is just as loving, loyal and playful as a dog, but chooses to express his emotions in more subtle ways. A relationship between a cat and his owner is always interesting because a cat will never let you get away with abuse and negligence. If you understand animals, you’ll know that a cat’s company will often trump over a dog’s. But if you don’t understand animals, you’re not fit to be raising a cat.

Hate mail for the cat person Raisa Rahim All that glitters is not gold. Behind that cute adorable mask, is a selfish, evil soul in disguise. There, I said it! Don’t you think there is a reason why we refer to dogs as a “man’s best friend” and not cats? It’s true that many animals, even tigers, can be tamed and trained but dogs can connect with us in ways that no other animals can. If you have read or heard about Bradley Trevor Greive, New York Times Best-Selling Author & Resident Wildlife Expert on Chelsea Lately & The Late Show with Craig Ferguson, you’ll learn

that dogs are genuinely social pets ,unlike cats, that are termed as sociopathic. Gradually, the Stockholm syndrome kicks in once you have captivated them for some time but they are not genuinely social like dogs are. Unlike their pompous cousin, the cat, dogs can demonstrate feelings of unconditional affection, possessiveness, protectiveness, guilt and loyalty. As for pretentious cats, they’ll do anything for food!
