teacher of the week

Shaheen College, Dhaka. Eventually last year he left for BISC. He was always cooperative and friendly with his students. A fan page from Facebook simply proves that. He is an active member of Bangladesh English Teachers Associations. He believes in unorthodox and creative ways of teaching rather than forcing it onto the students. Although his whole life is dedicated towards education, he is also a loving husband and a proud father.

Bijoy's Passion Bijoy loves playing football. He spends most of his time at Abahoni field where he gets the opportunity to play with a lot of crazy footballers. Most of them are at least 5 years older than him but he is a hero there. He has his own team called, "Golden Hole" and he is the proud captain of that team.

Tales From the City

Episode 1: The Grass is greener

The story Welcome to the city - a vast concrete jungle of high rises and slums, traffic jams and crowded streets! Packed with humans now, the animals who once lived here have now all fled in search for a greener horizon. And within this manmade jungle, at a park with the last surviving mango tree, home to Jonaki and friends, is where our story begins . . .

Dr Meow's Lab DIY

Pet Puppets Be it little kids or slightly older kids, no one can resist dolls! But as much as you love playing with them, how about having as much fun making them? You got it, with a few easy steps, you can become expert in making your very own puppets to play with and to show off! What’s more, if you make enough creative ones to give each one a distinctly different look and character, you can even hold your own puppet show!

What You Need:

Star-Struck! The Star-Nosed Mole's nose is shaped like a star! It hails from different places such as North America, North Atlantic Ocean and also from cold regions such as Southern Hemisphere.

Fun Facts • The Star-Nosed Mole is scientifically known as "Condylura Cristata." • The star on its snout is known as an "Eimers Organ" and it has more than 25,000 sensory receptors. • The pink fleshy tentacles are called "Rays." • Tails function as a fat storage for breeding season in spring.

• A long sock • Superglue • Buttons/googly eyes • Felt fabric • Thick thread • Scissors

Get Started:

Take a long white or any other coloured sock. The sock should be long enough for it to come up to your elbow at least. Now, glue two googly eyes to the bottom of the sock where your toe should be. Use superglue to stick the eyes as craft glue may not be strong enough. Make sure you have an adult nearby to help you out. Let it dry. Next, when the glue is dry, stick your hand in where the bottom of your foot would be and shape your hand like an open mouth. Now cut out a piece of felt in the shape of a tongue and stick it on the bottom part of your “open mouth.” You can also cut out different shapes out of felt for the nose, and stick or sew on some thread to make whiskers. You have a cute puppet all ready for the showing off! Munira Ahmed

Tip: You can visit the nearest stationery store for other craft items like glitter fabric pens, buttons, sequins and neon markers to make your pet puppet more interesting!

Science

Sparkling Lava Lamp Ran out of fun things to do already? Here’s a cool new idea for your school science fair. You can even do it at home with your friends and show off your scientific talents!

How it Works:

The secret behind the lamp’s “lava” is basic science. Oil is lighter than water, so it rises to the surface. Salt is heavier and sinks to the bottom. When you add salt, blobs of oil attach to the grains and sink. Then the salt dissolves, and the oil bubbles to the top. The result is a true treat for the eyes!

What You Need:

• Transparent jar with lid • Water • Food colouring • Glitter • Vegetable oil • Salt • Torch light Fill 3/4 of the jar with water. Add food colouring until you have your desired colour. A few drops should do! Sprinkle in glitter for extra sparkle. Now

fill the jar almost to the top with vegetable oil and let the mixture separate. Pour salt into the jar until you see the beautiful lava lamp effect. When the bubbles stop, add more salt to see it again. Shine a torch behind the jar to watch your lava lamp glow! Munira Ahmed

PET TIPS

5 Pet Do's When two different species of a playful nature get together, the union is expected to be harmonious. Kids and animals are pretty much on the same page; they are full of energy and have an odd appetite for junk food. But they get off on the wrong foot when they attack one another out of excitement. Here are 5 things kids should do while playing with animals. Do's 1) Start with a stroke: Whether it's a cat or a dog, start with a gentle stroke. They respond very well to

this kind of affection and will soon come to trust you. 2) No Fluffy! : You might feel sad when your cat or dog begs for food; learn to say NO! 3) Their ears: Ears are sensitive parts for cats and dogs. Cover their ears while giving them a bath. 4) Nails: Ask a parent to clip your pet's nails, so that they don't scratch you while playing. 5) Time: Pets give you company; doesn't mean you can't do the same for them. Find time for your pet. Rubab Nayeem Khan

Genre Animated, Action/Adventure Producers Dreamworks Starring Emma Stone, Nicholas Cage, Ryan Reynolds

Out With an Aim! “Shark Tooth Tale” is a charming story of a young boy who sets out on a quest to buy the fossilized shark tooth of his dreams. But what is a shark fanatic to do, when his mom and dad won’t buy it for him? He rolls up his sleeves and goes out to find ways to earn his own money to buy it himself! Abby Klein’s story very nicely reflects the importance of working for what you want, and how often times, the effort you put in makes your goal (or in this case, a fossilized Megalodon tooth) even more enjoyable! “Ready Freddy” stories are short and amusing reads. The stories are set within a family of four, with a sister Freddy does not get along with. But despite their fights, there’s always a part in the story where they work together. The illustrations that go along with the stories add to the entertainment. Afshan Sattar

Eep is a Stone Age girl. She is smart, rebellious and adventurous. Her father, Grug is strict, and doesn’t let her go out and explore alone. He tells her she should "never not be afraid." Eep, however, gets bored and restless. She follows a light moving outside their cave, and meets the intelligent Guy. Guy shows Eep the "magic" of fire, and tells her something huge will happen. At first, Grug doesn’t believe this homo sapien boy. But later, he becomes convinced, and Eep and her family, and her newfound friend are thrown into an adventure of their lives. videogame

Max Steel Max McGrath is an average teenager. He goes to high school, tries to stay on top of his grades, avoids the mean kids. Regular stuff. One day, he discovers that he can produce turbo energy. Just when he gets used to this awesome superpower, an evil villain called Mike Dredd hears about it, and decides to steal it for his nefarious schemes. Luckily, a helpful alien called Steel arrives just in time to team up with Max. Together, they combine their powers to form Max Steel, a brand new superhero. The animated series is actually inspired by a line of action figures called Max Steel, which were popular between 20002002. Max is a lot like Peter Parker, but with more guns and explosions. Definitely a hit with the boys. Sabrina F Ahmad Positive messages Positive role models Violence and scariness Fun factor Suitable for: Age 8+

An open world action adventure game starring a plucky cop named Chase McCain. He's out to capture the town's biggest crooks. When kids aren't following plot points they can freely explore the city, often to find unexpected rewards! The Good: • Fun, immersive visuals • Teaches logic, deduction and puzzling solving • Fun, family-friendly game The Bad: • No multiplayer • Some long loading screens and unpredictable load locations after saving and exiting the game prove a bit of a nuisance Parental Advisory: It's likely that kids who play the game will want to buy the LEGO sets they see, and that kids who play with LEGO will want to buy the game.
