CONCEPT

The presence of an existing sewage holding tank on site influenced the building to take its form. Three planes were inserted on the site with the idea of physically creating a barrier between the sewage tank and the building. A fourth plane was added to create an entrance and all the planes together guides you through the spaces. The requirement for a space to hold occasional seminars and workshops along with display of St. Gobain products and an office space with meeting room for the employees was challenging to be provided within 400 m² and this gave rise to the need of a multifunctional and flexible space which led to the creation of the double height space with a series of steps that lead to the first floor. These steps emphasises the idea of an experential journey and simultaneously serves as a seating and display area. The first floor has an office area with collaboration area for the visitors and the staff. The meeting room due its requirement for privacy is located in the second floor.

Space as a Therapist Extension of Magdeburg Munici pal Psychiatric hospital. Academic project : M.Arch 1st sem Location : Magdeburg, Germany Year: 2013 Size: 3971 sq.m Professor: Prof. Ralf Niebergall AIM To create a secure and healing environment, which provides a sense of freedom and orientation simultaneously for people who face extreme emotional crisis. Also to reduce and counteract prejudices concerning mentally ill and psychiatric facilities.

proposed site in magdeburg

CONCEPT The Street

Pockets of green healing spaces enclosed by various clusters are connected by the ‘central street’. ZONING This arrangement emphasizes the different stages of recovery, i.e. from a safe enclosed environment to a more open ‘main street’ and finally to the outside world. ‘The street’ besides being the main circulation and communication spine, also acts as a buffer between the semi-private and private zones.

The overall height of the hospital was carefully limited to 3 floors to maintain a scale comfortable for the patients and avoid an imposing effect on them. Parents & children and Adolesfirst floor cents units were placed in the ground floor, so that the children can use the green spaces. The second floor consists only of the acute care unit, as the patients belonging here is always under strict observation and cannot be allowed to interact with other departments.

Healing spaces Spatial hierarchies, interactive spaces and view of green spaces were the key features considered while designing each unit. Special effort was taken to avoid the stereotypical corridors in a hospital. Every bed room was carefully placed to form a cluster, which created these “junctions “ of interactive spaces for the patients and staff. This kind of layout gave a sense of freedom and unrestrictedness to the patients, while making it easier for the staff to observe without imposing.

TempelhofTherap Transformation to a gloal urban implant Academic project : Location : Year: Professor:

M.Arch 2nd sem (conceptual) Berlin, Germany 2014 Prof. Omar Akbar

AIM To rejuvenate and implant an icon in Berlin’s Tempelhofer feld, which was at one point of time a major symbol of power. The intention was to merge the edges of the site with the city and simultaneously create a platform for the increasing young poulation of the creative industry in Berlin,to learn, perform and exhibit their arts. Thus creating an Urban weave of different cultures and communities along with the existing activities of the site.

27

The site being a vast flat land in the middle of city fenced all around except for limited entry points, gave a sense of isolation and and of being inaccessible. To weave the site with the city was the major aim. While the structure acts like a landscaped pathway for the pedestrians at the roof level, the lower levels comprises of facilities for the creative population of Berlin to learn , create and exhibit their works. The undulating form intents to break the monotony of the vast flatness of the site.

The current activities of the site which includes sports events, skating, para-gliding etc will continue in the eastern part of the site, this also acts like a breathing space for the highly dense residential area in the east. The walkway will also be like an open platform for street performances and art. Thus weaving the people of Berlin to art.

House 91 Private residence Professional project : Ochre architects Location : Bangalore, India Year: 2011 Size: 604 sq.m Six wall frames run along the length of the 80ft. x 120 ft site which houses plenty of silver oak trees. Maximum visual connection with the natural environment was the primary aim.

29

CONCEPT

The idea of lines transformed into planes and finally into six geometrically sculpted parallel walls define the project. The perpendicular planes to these walls are made transparent to ensure unobstructed visual connectivity across the site. The parallel walls define five spatial bays as two service, two private and one semi-private.

31

The floor slabs are carefully designed to emerge and hover above the ground to create a subtle floating effect and at the same time to emphasise the solidity of The wall frames rise above the roof slab, converting themselves into planter boxes and seating areas on the terrace.

CONCEPT

Circulation

Evolving from the constraints of an oddshaped site, the scheme explores the possibilities of overlapping spatial volumes, which are animated through active circulation cross overs.

A stairway runs along the length of the building, pausing at every floor to lead the user to the various facilities provided.
