01 Yankee Hill Branch Library Location : Lincoln, Nebraska Professor : David Newton Partners: Bailey Gocke & Samantha Zeek Spring 2021 Through the programmatic development of a cultural learning center, the Yankee Hill Branch Library will be a place where the community can go to gather and explore many worlds, both in books and through the environment around them. This branch library will provide opportunities for the community to learn through a hands-on approach, with programmatic spaces including a culinary learning kitchen, and access to a greenhouse and green roof. This branch will be inclusive to all, while providing separate areas for teens, adults, and children to allow for sound and bodily isolation. Through the implementation of biophilic design elements, this space will feel open and bright, providing a connection to natural elements and creating a reprieve from the daily influences of the city.

02 Laboratories of New Worlds Location : Nebraska Professor : Cruz Garcia & Nathalie Frankowski Spring 2019

If the campus represents the idealized form of ground occupation by architecture as a set of organized structures addressing a common, greater program, Laboratories of New Worlds explores its reformulation as the landscape where architectural innovation and the search for new worlds takes place. In the campus, buildings provide for social condenser, workshop and laboratory spaces in pure forms to outline new ways of living, and new ways of representing the future ways of life. This structure is a laboratory for Theaster Gates a contemporary artist who is based in Chicago and works on black art. The form was an exploration on Hardcorism and was a derivative from the Cenotaph of Newton by Étienne-Louis Boullée.

03 The Triple Box Location : Bentonville, Arkansas Professor : Jason Griffiths Spring 2020

‘The Triple Box’ is the adaptive re-use of a Big Box for Walmart employees in Bentonville, Arkansas (the home of Walmart). Bentonville stands as a symbol of American capitalism like Detroit (Ford). This structure has a CLT factory and a community center as its primary programs. The CLT factory area has a curved roof with a ribbed glulam wood structure and an acrylic panelized membrane. This wood structure was put in place to showcase the ability of engineered lumber in design. The existing envelope of the Walmart was left intact because it was part of the identity of Bentonville. The structure itself becomes a museum to the old big box store.

04 Narcissistic Being Location : Lincoln, Nebraska Professor : Marc Maxey Partners: Geneva Sinkula, Sebastian Toalson & Michaela Smith Fall 2018 This project evokes narcissism through architecture. It is a machine for talking by allowing the self absorbed society to be concentrated on the structure rather than surroundings. The structure itself seeks attention with the loud and overwhelming interior contrasting with the subtle white gridded exterior. Ultimately, the structure deals with isolation from others and the environment, while creating an architecture that is obsessed with itself. PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat at least until the meter runs out! This structure is made with 2”x 2” wood, that is joined by using Japanese carpentry influenced lap joints. A grid of 2’ x 2’ was used to construct this installation.
