COURSE DESCRIPTION

INTEGRATED CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT Hydrology, management and decision making in a catchment with competing uses

In this this three-day, thematic course we aim to enable you to address suitable holistic integrated catchment management. The course focusses on the challenges of surface water and groundwater resources management at catchment scale, as well as managing competing uses and environmental impacts. Catchment hydrology and its implications on water management is discussed. Decision support tools and modelling tools are introduced through examples and project cases. Hands-on exercises are not included. Water resources are under increasing stress from growing populations, intensification of agriculture, and climate change. Catchment management is vital to water use permitting, setting allocation limits, defining permissible loads and environmental impacts, and making water sharing strategies. To achieve holistic integrated catchment management, water managers and planners must address groundwater and surface water interaction as well as the impact of land use and climate change on water resources. COURSE TOPICS 

Specific water management targets and criteria

Water use, conflicts and resources

Understanding the catchment

Assessment and modelling tools

What to request and expect from a model

From data and models to decision variables

REMOTE SENSING Get the full picture using satellite images!

This one-day course provides you with valuable insight into the rapidly evolving remote sensing technology based on dozens of earth observation satellites in orbit at the moment. You will learn how remote sensing information is becoming much more accessible and how it can easily be integrated into MIKE Powered by DHI or GIS software. The lack of reliable data to calibrate and validate models is often a challenge, especially in ungauged catchments or remote parts of the world. This can often be overcome using remote sensing information input. Satellite images provide valuable information across time and space, about flood events, oil spills, algae blooms, deforestation and other environmental issues. Satellites can be used to generate baseline conditions, up-to-date maps of land cover and urban development, and images can provide information about current conditions. COURSE TOPICS 

Introduction to remote sensing and digital image processing

Data types, sensors and satellites, data prices and availability

Data pre-processing (radiometric and geometric calibration)

Remote sensing of water resources

Remote sensing of urban environments

Remote sensing of coastal and marine environments

Image classification and change detection

Digital Elevation Models from satellite

Hands-on exercises accessing and using satellite images

INTEGRATED WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT An IWRM and Climate Change Adaptation Practitioners Course

This three-day thematic course teaches you how to analyse, formulate, and implement water policies, plans and programmes using an Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) approach. The course focuses on tools to implement IWRM – the enabling environment, institutional roles and management instruments. The aim of the course is to enhance your ability to undertake IWRM with special reference to catchment (watershed, river basin) management and ecosystems. Within management instruments the emphasis is on the MIKE Powered by DHI modelling tools for building decision support systems (eg MIKE OPERATIONS, MIKE HYDRO Basin, MIKE SHE, GIS, Aqua Republica). The requirements related to climate change, vulnerability and risk management are considered and international cases studies and lessons are drawn upon. IWRM is a coordinated approach to land and water resources management at international (transboundary), national and at local scales. The global use of water for households, industries and irrigation is growing and to meet the needs there is a demand for better understanding of water resources and for sharing water more efficiently among different groups of users.
