Clients’ success stories
Cape Town
Tauranga
Data management made easy Cape Town, South Africa, was losing 25% of its water. With 330,000 mega litres of water serving 3.4 million inhabitants per year, they simply couldn’t afford to lose such a precious resource in such large quantities.
Forging a trusted advisory role Tauranga, New Zealand, needed an overall plan to address their water modelling needs. We were selected as the Tauranga City Council’s (TCC) hydraulic modelling advisor to assist them in making the right decisions to meet their responsibilities, while ensuring that top quality controls are in place.
We improved their data management with our Data Integration Management System (DIMS). In so doing, we effectively helped them reduce their water loss, and gave the city fast and easy access to all the information they need on water quality, supply, sewage collection, treatment and disposal.
Our solutions have helped TCC address storm water, wastewater and water distribution needs across various dynamic, complex and fascinating terrains. Learn more: http://bit.ly/dhics-tauranga

What is it? You get a web and mobile-friendly application, which gives you access to online network control, with real-time, hindcasting and forecasting capabilities. Our solution provides operational decision support, system forecasts and automated simulations. It is available on your tablet, smartphone, laptop or desktop – so you can get the information you need wherever you are. It connects with SCADA for real-time, hindcast and forecast modelling. With the help of online network modelling, operators can now take on a more proactive role in managing their network, instead of waiting for things to happen. WaterNet Advisor
WD-online
The application supports custom solutions for online network control, with real-time, hindcasting and forecasting capabilities. It provides operational decision support, system forecasts and automated simulations in an easy and efficient manner. You can access your hydraulic models and get immediate answers with just a few clicks on your tablet, smartphone, laptop or desktop.
The application offers a comprehensive solution for online real-time control of water supply networks, providing system managers and operators with operational decision support, system forecasts and automated simulations. Using DIMS, the model receives real-time data from SCADA. Subsequently, DHI’s model performs an online analysis and simulates possible response patterns to changing conditions. The results can be downloaded into the SCADA database for real-time display.

Zurich
Drammensregionen
A monitoring system to improve the city’s water distribution network performance Due to a lack of information about the behaviour of the Zurich Water Supply (WVZ) network as well as its hydraulic and quality conditions, WVZ started a pilot project with DHI.
Building a bridge between planning, design and operation Godt Vann Drammensregionen in Norway is made up of nine municipalities with 160,000 inhabitants living in an area of 1,500 km2. There is one main water works that supplies to four out of the nine municipalities. Godt Vann Drammensregionen intends to move its entire water distribution network to an online environment to achieve an integrated solution in planning, design and operation, as traditional offline modelling has its restrictions.
We set up an Urban Online Water (UOW) modelling system in the third largest and most complex pressure zone of Zurich. The UOW consisted of online hydraulic and water quality models interconnected with the hydraulic and water quality sensors in the network. This will help WVZ gain actual information about the hydraulic conditions, the mixing of water from different sources and the water quality in the network.
DHI successfully piloted an online water distribution model in Øvre Eiker, which sets the path for the awareness and future application of online modelling in the region.

WASTEWATER
Optimise your wastewater treatment plant for substantial cost savings We help wastewater treatment operators improve the treatment efficiency and capacity of their WWTPs, as well as reduce the consumption of energy and chemicals. We do this through our knowledge of WWTP processes and by using online sensors, available data and setting up real-time control of WWTP performance.

WASTEWATER
What is it? The solution includes real-time monitoring of the processes and automatically finetunes them to operate efficiently during variable conditions. This solution often does not command any major construction work – all it requires is sensor data. These sensors are used for automated set point control with the DIMS that can be configured according to the client’s specific needs. The system helps to improve treatment processes and optimise operations – helping you get the most out of your treatment capacity with reduced energy expenditure. WEST
DIMS
A powerful and user-friendly modelling software for dynamic modelling and simulation of WWTPs and other types of water quality related systems. It is designed for operators, engineers and researchers interested in studying physical, biological or chemical processes in WWTPs and sewer systems.
Used for linking SCADA system data and models in projects that implement monitoring and/or model-based real-time control systems. Come with flexible and automated reporting capabilities. Together with WEST, the package provides a dynamic tool that is more reliable in simulating the WWTP based on real data obtained from SCADA, helping to optimise the performance of your WWTP in real-time.

Aarhus
Lüleburgaz
Successful wastewater treatment optimisation Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city and principal port, faced a serious need to increase its wastewater treatment efficiency and capacity. Adding new machinery and tanks would have added significant burden to the city’s finances.
Process optimisation at plant The design of the Lüleburgaz WWTP in Turkey was based on estimations that were not verified. This resulted in a design that could not capture the efficacies of the plant. A cost-efficient solution was needed for the construction of the WWTP, which required a more reliable modelling tool than what was used before. It also needed to be operated with optimised scenarios and had to have better capability in identifying future problems.
DHI provided a fix that was both cost-efficient – providing annual savings of about EUR 701,000 – and easily maintained by Aarhus Water’s own staff.
DHI provided a dynamic model that was more reliable in simulating the WWTP, based on the design data provided by consultants and real data obtained from the SCADA system.

STORM WATER
Safeguard your citizens and assets with improved flood control We help cities identify areas vulnerable to urban flooding and support them in designing and operating their flood control structures. We do this by implementing DHI’s smart flood control solutions.

STORM WATER
What is it? You will get a real-time control system based on rainfall radar nowcasts, hydrological and hydraulic model forecasts. Real-time data are provided from rainfall radar to get nowcast of rainfall for the next several hours. We integrate real-time data and forecasts from various sources into a single platform and run real-time forecasting with MIKE Powered by DHI’s simulation models to operate the control structures in the most optimal way. The solution may also serve as an early warning system resulting in better emergency management. MIKE SHE and MIKE FLOOD
MIKE URBAN
Both software are used for real-time forecasting of river flows and water levels, based on radar measurements and nowcasts. This includes surface runoff, infiltration, unsaturated zone, saturated zone and river hydraulics.
MIKE URBAN is the urban water modelling software of choice when important parameters for model selection are stability, workflow, openness, flexibility, GIS integration and physical soundness. MIKE URBAN covers all water networks in the city, including water distribution systems, storm water drainage systems, and sewer collection in separate and combined systems. The software is used for forecasting of urban storm water drainage behaviour.
MIKE OPERATIONS The web-based version of the product is used for visualisation of measured, nowcasted and forecasted data.
Clients’ success stories
Elblag
Vejle
Protecting Elblag city from floods The city of Elblag is located in north-eastern Poland along the Elblag river basin, near the river mouth to the Vistula Lagoon. The city is situated in an area with unfavourable hydrological regime and is threatened by floods caused by heavy rainfall and backflow from the Lagoon. To reduce potential losses caused by massive flood events, Elblag city authorities needed to implement a flood forecasting system to enable early warning for the citizens of Elblag.
Improved flood control and water quality with a smarter solution. The geographic characteristics of the city of Vejle in Denmark make it naturally prone to flooding. Vejle Municipality and Vejle Waste Water Utility needed a smarter solution to operate the city’s existing flood control structures. A real-time control system based on rainfall radar nowcasts, hydrological and hydraulic model forecasts, as well as operational rules was implemented. The result? Improved flood protection and better water quality of the river.
Using MIKE software, we developed a Local Monitoring and Flood Response Support System (LMFRS) to help them manage flood risks within the city.
