The Giant’s Causeway was formed about 60 million years ago when basalt lava rose to the surface and cooled, cracking into large columns. driven by passion Bahraini artist Lulwa Al Khalifa believes in painting in the moment, picking from what she sees and is inspired by

» Why did you choose painting? I never actually chose to become a painter; in fact, I feel painting chose me. I have not had any formal training in art except for a course in oil painting when I was in high school. I started painting as a way of dealing with a loss in my family and my eldest daughter suggested we

paint to take my mind off things. Aside from being very therapeutic at the time, I was amazed at how organic the process was for me. I just knew what to do and how to apply the colours to achieve my desired results. » What is the philosophy behind your art works? I paint what I feel when I’m facing my canvas. I don’t over think my process nor do I research and experiment too much. Painting for me is visceral, it happens in the moment. I am inspired by an image , a thought or an idea and I feel compelled to put it on a canvas. I paint until I feel that the painting is done and once it’s finished, I don’t go back to it or tinker with it too much. It’s like the work declares its own completion.

I am excited about each and every painting; otherwise, I wouldn’t paint it. Passion is the one ingredient that cannot be missing from any artistic endeavour. Its absence becomes glaring and the work becomes soulless. » How important is it to stick to the rules of any medium? There are no rules! If it serves your work, then do it. If it works for you, then do it. Often, the concern with art is that it needs to be durable, the paint or the medium used must be used in a way that doesn’t make it fragile. But, what if that fragility is exacants? It all goes back to the intentions of the artist and the purpose of the piece - if the purpose is served, then the rules do not matter.

‫بأعمالها اإلبداعية بأكملها‪ .‬قامت لؤلؤة بإبداع‬

‫اكتملت‪ ،‬وبمجرد االنتهاء من الرسم ال أغير في‬ ‫اللوحة وال ُأعدل فيها كثيرًا‪ .‬واألمر يشبه اإلعالن‬

‫الرسم أو العملر بطريقة غير هشة‪ .‬ولكن‪ ،‬إذا‬ ‫كانت هذه الة من اختيار الفنان‪ ،‬فسيعود هذا‬

‫تحب استخدام األل��وان الجريئة والحيوية التي‬

‫عن اكتمال العمل‪.‬‬

‫إلى نوايا الفنان والغرض من اللوحة الفنية‪ .‬وإذا‬

‫لوحات تجريدية ولوحات تصويرية زيتية‪ ،‬وهي‬

‫كان الغرض يخدم العمل الفني‪ ،‬فإن القواعد‬

‫تُضيف الحياة إلى اللوحات باستخدام الفرشاة‬ ‫المزخرفة وال��ت�لاع��ب ب��األل��وان على القماش‪.‬‬

‫أستمد إلهامي من الناس واألشياء الموجودة‬

Barcelona is a city that is seemingly unaware of its own charm! Virtually sashaying through life like a supermodel among Spain’s constellation of star cities, it has Instagram-worthy architecture, hip food and tapas scene and cultural offerings, making it a must-visit on a Spain itinerary. Indeed, the city is not embarrassed about letting its hair down every weekend, partying till late Sunday morning, only to awaken bleary-eyed but happy. And over a weekend in this European diva of nightlife, fun-loving droves of locals throng the streets at night, flowing like a river in spate. In the day too, life eddies outdoors in the plazas and streets under a perennially blue sky, as blue as the Mediterranean that skirts this beachside city. After all, Barcelona is Spain’s second largest city, and likes to think that it is its liveliest! Yet the Catalan capital has always marched to a different drummer, acutely aware of its unique identity and language. Park Guell, one of Barcelona’s largest parks, was designed by Gaudi fortune tellers, musicians, portrait artists and even anarchists waving political tracts and messages. People ordered tapas (bite-sized snacks) and cava, the local wine and watched the drama of life ebb and flow like a restless ocean. But we were drawn by the bizarre cast of characters that transform Las Ramblas into a street play of sorts. There were human statues who had painted their bodies a shade of copper or silver, and stood still, pretending to be angels, demons or even Dracula. Along the way, we stopped at some important landmarks like the Canaletas Fountain,

where the victories of the local football team – Fútbol Club Barcelona – are feted. At Las Ramblas, we touched Barcelona’s happy-go-lucky playful spirit. Barcelona straddles several centuries. Beyond the old quarter, begins the 19th century Eixample (Expansion) district. In the midst of this landscape, we admired the works of Barcelona’s favourite son and most celebrated architect, Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926), the leading light of the Modernista School. Love Gaudi or hate him but one can’t be indifferent to his work. Inspired by natural forms – gnarled tree trunks, a wave of the ocean,

the drift of wet sand – Gaudi’s buildings are curved, bulbous and have organic shapes, studded with mosaics, ceramic tiles and glass. They are effervescent verging on the outre. Park Guell, one of Barcelona’s largest parks, was also designed by Gaudi. The park was awash in colour and sound and a saucy spirit - a harpist strummed; a long-haired Prophet-like guitarist plucked his guitar, while an auburnhaired woman played a xylophone. In his later years, Gaudi increased his focus on God and commenced construction of his most famous work – the Sagrada Familia. Begun in 1882, this church is Barcelona’s most iconic bovexpected to be completed in 2026. Later, we walked along the palmembroidered quays near the port where the Mediterranean lay splayed out like Cinderella’s sequined blue cape. We inhaled the salt-laden sea breeze and promised each other and the city that we would return!

The city offers a diverse set of experiences for visitors – it almost literally has something for everyone! For those who are fond of art, architecture and culture, there are numerous options to visit. Start with the John Rylands Library (at the University of Manchester), a masterpiece of Victorian Gothic architecture that is more akin to a castle or a cathedral than a sanctum sanctorum for books. It traces its origins back to 1890, when it was commissioned by Enriqueta Rylands in memory of her late husband John Rylands who, till the time of his death in 1888, was one of Manchester's most successful industrialists. The library's world-class collection includes items such as the St John Fragment, the oldest known piece of the New Testament; magnificent illuminated medieval manuscripts; and a 1476 William Caxton edition of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Does history excite you more? From the Library, you could walk down to the Manchester Museum, a four-storey, 15-gallery host to a fascinating collection of exhibits. These include Stan, the fossilised Tyrannosaurus Rex; South American anthropology collections; and a Manchester gallery. Air Arabia Egypt starts direct flights between Sohag-Kuwait

As part of its route expansion strategy, Air Arabia Egypt launched a new route linking Sohag in Egypt to Kuwait. The new flight operates three times a week, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays,

departing from Sohag International Airport (HMB) at 2340 hours and arriving in Kuwait International Airport (KWI) at 0305 hours, the following day. The return flight will depart Kuwait at 0345 hours and land in Sohag at 0535 hours local

time – operating Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Adel Al Ali, Group Chief Executive Officer of Air Arabia, said: “Egypt is one of our fastest growing markets driven by both business and tourist travellers. The flight will operate on Fridays and Sundays under two different timings. On Fridays, the flight will depart from Alexandria International Airport at 16:10 hours, and will arrive at Milan Bergamo International Airport at 19:45

Peintre autodidacte n’ayant aucune formation en art, Lulwa Al Khalifa a étudié la littérature à l’Université de Boston, à laquelle elle doit la stimulation de son intérêt pour les poursuites créatives en général. Créant de l’abstrait ainsi que des peintures d’images avec de l’huile, elle aime utiliser les couleurs vibrantes qui ravivent la toile avec l’aide de ses coups de brosse texturisés et la manipulation de la peinture sur la toile. Elle parle de sa carrière, de la philosophie derrière ses peintures et de ce qui l’inspire dans ses poursuites créatives.

» Pourquoi avez-vous choisi la peinture ? Je n’ai pas vraiment choisi la peinture, je pense que c’est elle qui m’a trouvée. Je n’ai pas eu de formation en peinture en dehors du cours de peinture à l’huile que j’ai reçu au lycée. J’ai commencé à peindre pour faire face à la perte d’un membre de famille et ma fille aînée m’a suggéré de peindre pour oublier. Bien que ce fût très thérapeutique Si ça marche pour vous alors faites-le. Souvent le plus dur avec l’art est qu’il soit durable, la peie manière sur le moment, j’avais été surprise de son effet biologique sur moi. Je savais ce qu’il fallait faire et comment appliquer les couleurs pour avoir le résultat escompté. » Quelle est la philosophie derrière vos œuvres artistiques ? Je peins ce que je ressens lorsque je regarde la toile. Je n’y réfléchis pas trop, ni ne fait des recherches poussées, la peinture pour moi est viscérale, cela se produit sur le moment.

A self-taught painter who has never had any formal instruction in art, Bahraini painter Lulwa Al Khalifa in fact studied literature at Boston University, which she credits with helping her form her outlook on creative pursuits as a whole. Creating abstract as well as figurative paintings with oil, she loves using bold, vibrant colours that bring the canvases to life with the aid of textured brush strokes and manipulation of the paint on her canvas. She talks about her career, the philosophy behind her paintings, and what inspires her in her creative pursuits. » Why did you choose painting? I never actually chose to become a painter; in fact, I feel painting chose me. I have not had any formal training in art except for a course in oil painting when I was in high school. I started painting as a way of dealing with a loss in my family and my eldest daughter suggested we paint to take my mind off things. Aside from being very therapeutic at the time,How organic the process was for me. I just knew what to do and how to apply the colours to achieve my desired results. » What is the philosophy behind your art works? I paint what I feel when I’m facing my canvas. I don’t over think my process nor do I research and experiment too much. Painting for me is visceral, it happens in the moment. I am inspired by an image , a thought or an idea and I feel compelled to put it on a canvas. I paint until I feel that the painting is done and once it’s finished, I don’t go back to it or tinker wipletion.

» De qui prenez-vous l’inspiration ? Des personnes et des choses autour de moi ! Mon défunt père m’inspirait à aimer l’art et à apprécier la créativité en moi et chez les autres. Des femmes fortes autour de moi m’ont inspirée à poursuivre mes passions et de ne pas être bloqué par mes propres limites. » Quelle est l’importance de respecter les règles de tout support ? Il n’y a pas de règles ! Si ça peut vous servir dans votre travail, alors faites-le. Si ça marche pour vous alors faites-le. Souvent le plus dur avec l’art est qu’il soit durable, la peie manière à ce qu’il ne soit pas fragile. Qu’en est-il si la fragilité est exactement ce que recherche l’artiste ? On n’en revient donc aux intentions de l’artiste et du but recherché : si le but est atteint, alors les règles ne sont pas importantes.

» Who do you take inspiration from? Many people and things around me! My late father inspired me to love art and appreciate creativity in myself and others. Strong women around me have inspired me to pursue my own self-imposed limitations. Artists and artworks, from the masters to unknown street art. Because they underscore what I love most about art: anything goes. Art exists because people wed upon it by experts or critics. » Tell us about what you are currently working on, something that you are excited about. I began with creating abstract paintings; however, I have now started painting figurative works. I wouldn’t paint it. There are no rules! If it serves your work, then do it. If it works for you, then do it. It all goes back to the intentions of the artist and the purpose of the piece - if the purpose is served, then the rules do not matter.

‫االستخدام ألنها قابلة لإلزالة بسرعة كبيرة‪ .‬وربما‬

‫رسومات في كل صفحة تقري ًبا‪ .‬وواصلت ممارسة‬

‫الحضارة الهندية الحديثة ذات المظاهر الحضرية‬
