The choice of shading device greatly affects a building’s cooling effect. Shades on the exterior block the sun before it meets the building envelope, allowing sun’s energy to penetrate the window, slightly heating the interior.

With rising number of rape cases in the country there is a need to segregate male and female dormitory.

Total bed capacity:92 Building in accordance with current building bye-laws. Kitchen block at the entrance for Janta khana distribution. A separate service entry. Caretaker office at the entry to the main block. Entry to the locker facility area is through caretaker office ensuring safety of belongings. Separate staircase entry to male and female block. Dormitory for the elderly and disabled is kept on the ground floor. Upper beds in dormitories of disabled and elderly on ground floor are occupied by children. This would help in developing a caring and helping attitude amongst children. Ground floor Dormitory is operation durind day hours as well.

Partition walls are made up of re-used foldable wooden planks. Consisting of In built window. Eliminating the provision of lintels, doors.
Humidity is a major problem in Kolkata. Ventilation is the best tackling solution. Provision of stack effect in the building.
FIRE SAFETY The major fire prone area is kept aloof from the rest of the structure; Gallery on three sides and open on one side. The maximum distance to the fire exit staircase is less than 30 m in accordance with fire safety norms.

COSTING Cost of concrete framework: Rs.789000 Cost of Brick Work: Rs 392000 MATERIAL JUSTIFICATION Cost of Bamboo Work: Rs 30200 Other misc. cost: Rs 288000 Indigenous and vernacular. Total approx. cost: Rs 1500000 Bamboo provides lesser embodied energy. Approx maintenance cost/year: Rs 800000 Overall building weight and cost is reduced. Thermo treatment method to make PROGRAM INVERSION: Other compatible uses during day hours. bamboo resistant to borers, fungi, termite and moisture. Bamboo Panels are not used everywhere because of its limited strength; exposed brick walls are provided in such cases. Exposed brick work with Rat trap bond which lessens the number of Brick required for construction, is used for constructing walls.

Beds can easily fold and get attached to the wall and furniture like table and chair can be taken out for different activities during day hours. Walls panels can easily fold and create a large space which can be used for different activities during day time During the day time 36 beds on ground floor are available for sleeping to people who work during the night time.

As poor homeless people thrive for openness semi open recreational space and balcony is provided on each side of shelter room. Modular foldable furniture and collapsable walls for flexibility in space usage. Urban population is increasing day by day and so is the no of homeless, so there should be a provision for extra people who can sleep in semi open spaces.

Brick Jaali – Perforated brick screen which utilises natural air movement to cool the interior and create intricate pattern of light and shadows are used for staircase
SIGNIFICANCE OF OPEN SPACES The nature of light brought in from a semi-open space is malleable, and help to make the adjacent spaces (or, the semi-open space itself) conducive to certain functions. Open and semi-open spaces can be understood as transition spaces which, traditionally have been the spaces for social communion and interaction.
