Site Analysis

Volume - 2600

The aim of the studio was to understand working of an office and developing the concept of the space according to the client’s need and selecting materials based on the nature of services/ work client offers. It was a cuboidal site with an area of 60 sq m. Client was a corporate lawyer. Taking contemporary as the concept for designing the office, emphasis was on stark lines and minimalism was done throughout the space .

6 Piece Burr Puzzle

Parts

Made with 24 cubic units

8 cubic units are removed

The aim of the studio was to design a furniture from the principle/ logic extracted from the given object of inspiration, in this case - a Burr puzzle. Understanding the puzzle and taking the logic of compact mass forward, an interlocking and interactive furniture was designed from foam for kids. The furniture had a total of 22 pieces and these pieces had some learning associated in the form of color or shape.

The standard six-piece burr consists of six notched square sticks of arbitrary equal length not less than three times their width, arranged symmetrically in three mutually perpendicular intersecting pairs.

Division Of Notches

-The stick is made out of 24 cubic units, out of which certain portion of these sticks remain constant, to maintain the outer symmetry of the puzzle. -Total 12 cubic units are used for making notches in these sticks

8 cubic units are removed

10 cubic units are removed

7 cubic units are removed

Locking Of Axis

Internal Geometry

The internal geometry is exactly half of the outer form. Internal geometry was studied by making the same puzzle in acrylic and then marking the interacting planes and removing the planes which are non interactive.

Locking Of Axis In Sequence

Logic from the object The object is formed with interlocking of different pieces. Interlocking leads to compacting the mass. Compact mass is taken as the logic to develop the design of the furniture.

Testing The Model The aim of this exercise was to understand how to achieve maximum strength and stability in a structure. A cube was made from reed sticks keeping in mind dimensions, proportions and the forces acting on it to ensure it is able to bare maximum amount of load without damaging itself.

Observations 1. On placing the 6th brick the sides of the triangle started buckling. 2. Threading should be done in all the sticks to increase their strength. 3.On placing the 20th brick all the triangles started buckling and it broke within 30 seconds of loading. 4. The entire cube collapsed vertically without twisting 5. A vertical member was needed in the center to connect the top and the bottom so that the load can be shared.

Final Model

Weight of model - 50 grams In this model each column was threaded from 30% - 70% which extended the tendency of breaking. Since its a cube and the load was going to be equally divided; ‘X’ form was used in the center to help in dividing the load and also one stick was attached to connect the top and the bottom to provide the required stability.

Joineries In Detail

Summer Winter School 1 The course was held in Jaisalmer and it aimed at mapping the changes in the heritage sites and understand how these places have evolved and how they are used in present day. Summer Winter School 2 The course was held in Jaipur and it aimed at identifying intermediate level squares and understanding the land-use pattern around these squares.
