ChillOut 3
21 years of being out and proud at ChillOut
C
HILLOUT Festival is celebrating its 21st birthday in style over the Labour Day long weekend.
From March 8 to 12 there are more than 50 events happening around the region from the Lavish Lunch at Bellinzona Grange at Hepburn to ChillOut’s Official Launch – Out and Proud Disco at the Daylesford Town Hall. Check out the official program in this edition of The Local on pages 14 to 17! The Roz Moynihan Worthy Cause Lavish Lunch will begin at noon on Friday, March 9 with welcome drinks and canapes served in the newly-opened wine hub, Tastings, followed by a multi-course lunch designed by the Bellinzona chef. The afternoon will be filled with entertainment by the amazing Aurora MacKrill or is that Liza with a 'Z'? And of course, there are fabulous auction items kindly donated by local and regional businesses. Proceeds go to this year’s worthy cause recipient, the Daylesford State Emergency Services Unit. The SES volunteers are always there when you need them so this is a great opportunity to give something back to this essential organisation. Start your 2018 ChillOut celebrations with a fun-filled afternoon of exquisite wining and dining and donating to a wonderful worthy cause. And if you’ve still got energy to burn, head to ChillOut’s Official Launch and the Out and Proud Disco at the Daylesford Town Hall, again on Friday, March 9 from 8pm. Dance all night to 80s toons with DJ Dozza and watch out for a special guest performance by the Australian Kylie show. Festival director Merryn Tinkler said preparations for the 21st birthday of ChillOut were shaping up “really, really well”. “On the back of the marriage equality year everyone is ready for a good celebration. It’s a very exciting time.” Merryn said with more than 50 events, and with myriad local venues getting on board, there was literally something for everyone to enjoy. “It’s our 21st year of being out and proud. It’s time to celebrate.”

Norm Close using light and shade to portray images
M
ALDON-based builder Glen “Kinga” Roy is Norm Close’s entry in the upcoming Maldon and District Portrait Prize. Norm told his story to Donna Kelly.
“The first 40 years of my life were spent in Trentham where I attended the local primary school. During those formative years I can recall lying on the lounge room floor copying the drawings of Eric Jolliffe in my beloved Saltbush Bill magazines. I then caught the character-building, decrepit and unheated bus for my secondary schooling at Daylesford Technical High School. My first year of studying art at high school we were situated in the impressive, south-facing art rooms in the Vincent Street campus, now the site of the Daylesford Museum. I was fortunate enough to have the renowned artist John Ashworth as my art teacher. He nurtured my interest in art. I have always drawn, doodled and painted as a hobby. However, the opportunity to develop my art practice only became available and possible in later life. I studied at TAFE in Broken Hill and gained Certificate III and IV in Fine Art. The teachers employed there were inspirational and they encouraged my enthusiasm to develop my art processes. When it was not possible to advance my training any further at that institution I relocated to Bendigo to attend La Trobe University where I graduated with a degree in Visual Art. Consequently, I was offered and accepted a career progression position of an art teaching opportunity back at Broken Hill TAFE. I found this a very rewarding post. My work has been greatly influenced by the experience over the past 30 years of travelling and working in regional and outback areas of Australia. I have taught, worked and lived in remote communities. This has bestowed upon me a great awareness of the Australian landscape, from an alternate point of view. I use abstraction as the method to illustrate this appreciation. My body of work varies radically. An example being my black and white drawings, using light and shade to portray images that in many cases cannot be produced as dramatically in colour. I use charcoals and soft pastels to create this effect. I also work with modern acrylic paints to create large modern images on canvas. These paintings are contemporary, therefore of a non-traditional or colonial structure. I anticipate that my work will provide others a grasp of the rugged interior of Australia, away from the familiar coastal fringe. I believe my audience is wide and varied, as confirmation of this my art has been sold to patrons across the nation. My work has been exhibited in numerous galleries in Victoria and interstate over the years. At present I have pieces on exhibition in The Tin Shed Gallery in Malmsbury. Alternatively, it is possible to visit my studio gallery at 493 Maldon Newstead Road in Welshmans Reef."
The Maldon and Central Goldfields Portrait Prize will be held at the Maldon Community Centre from March 10 to 18.

Pavilion pop-up restaurant
R
ENOWNED Swedish chef Måns Backlund wowed diners at a pop-up restaurant at the Hepburn Pavilion last week.
Hosted by the Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa, guests experienced a Swedish twist on Australian classics all under the banner of a Summer Harvest Winemaker’s Dinner. The event put a spotlight on local food and wine producers with wines from Latta Vino and Eastern Peake Vineyard, vegetables from Angelica Organic Farm and free range pork and meat from Jonai Farms. Måns Backlund is from Gothenburg, Sweden, and has over 16 years’ experience working at top restaurants around the world. Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa spokesman Mark Wall said the night had been a huge success. “The venue’s atmosphere and its connection to the region and local producers created the perfect fine dining experience. It was great to see people from Daylesford, Hepburn, Ballarat and Melbourne, all coming together for a rare experience.” It is planned that the pop-up restaurant will become a regular event.

HE Mount Players' first production for 2018 is The Offshore Island, a drama by Marghanita Laski and directed by Cherry Servis. The season will run from March 9 to 25 at The Mountview Theatre, 56 Smith Street, Macedon.
The Mount Players presents

THE OFFSHORE ISLAND by Marghanita Laski
Set in England some 10 years after a nuclear explosion, widow Rachel Verney and her two children live in an isolated valley that has remained unaffected by the war or its subsequent contamination. They have had no contact with the outside world until one day a group of Americans arrive. The family’s initial delight and gratitude soon gives way to concern. While The Offshore Island was written in 1954 at the height of the Cold War, a time when many people in Britain feared being in the middle of a potentially catastrophic action, the story still rings true today, although with different protagonists. Will mankind never learn from history?
Set in England some ten years after a nuclear explosion, Rachel survives with her two children in an isolated valley. They have no knowledge of what goes on beyond their little world until one day a group of Americans arrive. A poignant story with a theme as relevant now as the day it was written over sixty years ago

Two 'miracles' bring Issa to Franklinford
F
RANKLINFORD artist Issa Outtarra was born and raised in Cote d’Ívoire (Ivory Coast) in West Africa. But while it is a beautiful country, Issa had a really difficult childhood. His parents separated when he was three and he never had the opportunity to go to school, but was used as a child labourer. He eventually left home and remembers sleeping under his work bench, receiving food but no pay as an adolescent apprentice. Issa, who is also making a “personal” donation of a sculpture to ChillOut, told his story to Kyle Barnes. Kyle: When did you know you were an artist? Issa: The miracle of my life was when I ran into Michelle Tadjo, a French artist married to an Ivorian Minister. Through some lucky chance, our paths crossed and I began to help her as an assistant, initially just as some “muscle” as she was struggling to move her large sculptures. But quickly she saw my interest and a glimmer of my talent and I became her artistic assistant and learnt an enormous amount as she designed and created her distinctive metal sculptures. Tragically, she died suddenly when I was aged about 20. I knew I was an artist in my own right when her family invited me to stay on and use her studio and I had my first independent exhibition at the French Cultural Centre which was a success. Since then I have lived to create and am proud to call myself an artist. Kyle: What sort of sculpture do you do? Issa: Like Michelle, my first love is metal and I work mostly with different kinds of steel, but I do occasionally integrate other mediums like glass, wood and found objects. I love how I can take a cold masculine piece of steel – rectangular, monochromatic, boring and transform it into a curvaceous, feminine, artwork of myriad forms. I like creating both figurative and abstract sculptures as well as unique artworks that also have a functional use – like chairs, lamps, tables, woodstands and whatever. I don’t see that artwork and furniture need to be separate categories. The best place to see my work is at my studio and sculpture garden at our church at the Franklinford intersection which is open most days and by appointment. I also exhibit regularly with upcoming exhibitions at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, The Toorak Village Sculpture Show and Mica Grange Autumn Sculpture Exhibition. Bowen & Kenneth Home Décor & Design in Howe St, Daylesford is my only retail outlet. There are also many visible examples of my works scattered at private properties throughout the region. Kyle: You are donating a sculpture to ChillOut. Can you tell us about that? Issa: That is a bit of a personal story. As I said I pick up themes connected to my life and play with them – one of the lovely current stories for me is the celebration of love in all its diversity, including Australia embracing institutional recognition with popular acceptance of gay marriage. My gay friends in Africa have and do suffer such prejudice and violence for what; their choice of who they love. It is easier to come out and say you are HIV-infected than that you are gay there. Also Monica and I (as a mixed race couple) lived in post-apartheid South Africa. Pretty confronting to think that would have been illegal not so long ago as well as to see how rare that still is today. I am happy to donate a sculpture that symbolises love in all its diversity to ChillOut. I hope my work resonates with people as it is truly cause for celebration.
Kyle: What is your Central Highlands story? Issa: Oh, that brings in my second miracle, that of meeting Aussie Monica. We met at an art exhibition when she was a busy public health physician leading a big HIV prevention and care program in my country. Despite having no English then, I followed her to her next job in Cape Town, South Africa and managed to woo her – she is now my wife and mother of Angela, eight, and Sophie, six. It was through her family’s Franklinford Church that we have made Central Highlands our global home since 2011. I am happiest in my little studio on the hill with magpies warbling. I love it here.

Just sayin’...
Pick me, pick me...
By Donna Kelly
I
AM learning the piano, again.
The first time around I was perhaps eight years old. My teacher was Mrs Lane. Her first name was Lois. True story. I never saw her husband so am not sure if he was Superman. She lived around the corner from my house and I either walked or rode my bike. I remember walking one time and a bloke following me in his car. I ran across the park to her house. I didn't tell her about the bloke and by the time my lesson had finished my small eight-year-old mind had already forgotten. I never really liked learning the piano. Mrs Lane was very keen on exams, so all I learnt were scales and music pieces to pass exams. I got to about 10 and asked if I could possibly learn some music from The Partridge Family. No, was the answer. I guess I could have learnt it at home on my own but any practise time, and I didn't practise much, was spent learning those bloody exam pieces. Talk about one certain way to stifle creativity. I also remember doing little concerts here and there, with her other students, and mostly at aged care facilities. The poor buggers, it's bad enough to be stuck in an aged care place, let alone have to sit and clap at some hopeless kids playing piano. At one of the concerts we were asked to bring little bags of lollies and we had to choose one resident to give the bag to. I went up to what seemed a really old bloke at the time, although thinking back he was probably a youthful 70, and proffered him my bag of sweets. "No, thanks," he said. WTF? That wasn't part of the plan. So I tried again and again he refused. Finally a staff member intercepted and steered me to a woman who looked like she liked sweets. I think I heard the word "diabetes". Really? Couldn't he have just taken the bag and binned it? Anyway, the final nail in the coffin with my piano playing was when my dad bought me a tee-shirt. It had a picture of a piano and words which proudly declared "I am a pianist!" I wore it to school where it was quickly interpreted to "I am a penis" with a lot of ensuing laughter. Not helpful when you are already not in the cool gang. But now I am playing again, sans the tee-shirt. Kyle bought me another one which reads "Editor because freakin' miracle worker isn't a job title". I wear it a lot. But back to piano. I have a great teacher who doesn't care about exams, well not with me, and I am already playing some Fleetwood Mac, which will be followed up by the Beatles. My teacher even said "just because the notes are written that way doesn't mean you have to play them that way if you don't want to". Mrs Lane would not agree. And it's just fun. I wander over to my lovely pianola - passed down from my grandmother, sit down, play and then look up and half an hour has flown by. I remember as a kid it seemed like the clock was going backwards. And who knew adding a glass of red wine to piano practice could make such a difference! Anyway, if you are like me, and tried something once and didn't like it, maybe try again. Just playin'...

EASONS of Life & Mountain: Phillip Edwards is an exhibition of recent work by the Bullarto artist.
The mainly large-scale watercolours give an insight into Edwards' captivation with the majestic beauty of Mount Buffalo. From rocky outcrops, monoliths and highland bogs to the quiet snow cover and the burst of spring bloom, he captures the seasonal transitions of this central Victorian jewel. The exhibition features over 70 works born out of a series of seasonal hikes over the last two years. Aquatic centre
A
PUBLIC meeting is being planned for the Daylesford Indoor Aquatic Centre interim committee to hear from the community regarding an indoor pool and recreation centre.
A survey held last year, with 457 respondents, found 98 per cent wanted a swimming pool while another 80 per cent also wanted a hydrotherapy pool. Approximately half of the respondents also wanted a wading pool, a gymnasium with fixed equipment and a group exercise area. A spokesperson said DIAC’s focus was to develop the centre as an independent community project. “An open community briefing will be held before Easter at the Daylesford Town Hall, to invite community feedback on some of the site options being considered. As no final decision has been made on either site or design, DIAC is keen to get community input.”

Properties in safe hands with people you can trust
A
TALENTED local duo has opened a bespoke property management business in Daylesford; Dayburn Property Management.
Brendan and Troy moved to Daylesford from Melbourne four years ago, leaving their city careers behind for a tree change. Brendan, pictured right with Troy, left, had an extensive career managing sales teams nationally, whilst Troy's hospitality career saw him manage many award-winning hotels in Melbourne. Troy has been a familiar face in Daylesford working at the Surly Goat, Daylesford Hotel and most recently Larder. "We realised there was an opportunity to open a business that focused not just on the guest experience, but on the long-term relationships with property owners,” Troy explains. "Many property owners live outside of Daylesford, so they need to know their properties are in safe hands with people they can trust and people who will care for the property as if it's their own. Property owners are at the centre of everything we do,” Brendan says. Dayburn Property Management provides Brendan and Troy with the opportunity to carry on their interest in property while utilising their skills in management and customer service right here in their local community. “We handle all aspects of short term property management from preparing a property for listing which includes photography, cleaning and maintenance, to listing the property online and managing the entire customer experience." Dayburn Property Management also offers two listings for its properties – at www.dayburnpropertymanagement.com.au, and also on their new accommodation website www.daylesfordcountryretreats.com.au which will be launching very soon.

Chef Matt headlining Scrub Hill's Longest Lunch
M
ATT Wilkinson will be cooking up a storm at Scrub Hill's Regional Longest Lunch on March 16 and raising money for Newlyn Primary School. That’s because Scrub Hill co-owner Jenni Draper went to Gnotuk Primary School, just out of Camperdown, which had about 20 kids in the school and just four in her year. She has empathy with all that encompasses, and hopes the donation may be used for a trip to Melbourne for something like “an NGV blockbuster”. Matt answered a few questions for The Local. Donna: What’s a South Yorkshire man doing in Victoria? Matt: I’ve never been really good with directions, I was supposed to be going to France and somehow ended up in Australia, no seriously. Donna: Are you bringing your home of Brunswick to Scrub Hill? Matt: I guess you could say my style of cooking is quite Brunswick East, but I can bring my good sense of humour and dashing good looks along for the day. Donna: Where will you source your produce? Matt: This event is really about showcasing the bevy of incredible small producers that are around this region. Some of the producers that we are really excited to be working with include: Salt Kitchen Charcuterie, Tuki Trout Farm, Mt Franklin Organics, Adsum Farmhouse, Angelica Organic Farm and Le Peche Gourmand. With matching tipples from Latta Vino and Animus Distillery. Donna: What can diners expect – any surprises? Matt: I truly hope the diners leave with a sense of fulfilment and that the food was honest and above all else, delicious. Donna: Do your mates get intimidated cooking for you? Matt: It’s funny how many times I go over to a house for the first time and the hosts are really intimidated by chefs in general. You only have to ask my wife, for as long as I’m not the one cooking, I’ll love anything (having bad plonk to serve up however is another story…). Donna: What’s your go-to meal for family/friends? Matt: My go-to meal for family and friends is always a simple yet beautiful roast tarragon and garlic chicken, with about four or five different sides, think biodynamic brown rice salad, grilled zucchini with almonds and honey and some lettuce leaves from my garden. Usually my wife cooks dessert because I’m really bad at baking.

Kyle’s Rant
S
O, EVERYONE’S an expert, I reckon it was since the first days of the competitive TV cooking shows that individuals have jumped on the bandwagon to become food critics.
Sure, betwixt the covers of The Local, readers get a look at some of our gorgeous eateries that dot the Central Highlands. That is, we basically highlight the price point, what’s new on the menu, the venue and the staff - and take some great food snaps. Notice I said highlight. We don’t say we are experts or pretend it is a critique such as you find in the pages of main-stream media. Now some of these “experts” do my head in. For example, those couple of wombats on the TV, you know the one with the French accent, I mean the dude’s been in Australia for at least a couple of decades by now. And his mate who is on the paleo diet. Bone broth anyone? And then there are all the other media food critics who weigh in with their expertly tweaked taste buds. Come on guys. The fact is that we are all individuals and smell and taste things differently, surely that means that we all have different opinions. It’s my opinion a food critic should espouse their particular thoughts on a dish and then qualify their remarks by saying it’s just their view. Nowadays you mix into that Instagram and sites like TripAdvisor which allow any old schmuck who was, for argument’s sake, having a bad day, I don’t know, maybe they got yelled out by the boss just before leaving Melbourne for a romantic weekend in the region. Then they got stuck in traffic and had an argument with their partner, just before slipping into a restaurant. Of course, they’re going to have a bad experience. Then they go and put their rating on TripAdvisor which brings down the poor restaurateur's average rating, all because the boss shouted at them on Friday afternoon. I have heard from a lot of our hospitality friends of shocking ratings given to them by the public, the sort of punters that you would never please. There was one where the customers rated the restaurant with three stars because “they had a wonderful time, the staff were courteous, the food was delicious and on time but… we are not sure how they would cope if there were more patrons in the restaurant”. So they judged that particular venue on a hypothetical scenario bringing down the place’s average star rating. WTF… Another doozy is where the punter rated this particular joint with only three stars because once again everything went swimmingly but they didn’t have room for dessert – so couldn’t rate it. Huh? Anyway, please don’t be flippant. And if you do think you are expert enough to rate our eateries just remember that to you it’s the click of a button but to the restaurateurs it’s their livelihood and the livelihood of their employees. Rate that…

Message from Festival Director The region has really pulled all stops out for a fabulous weekend. There are many highlights and the region has really jumped on board.
ChillOut is a proudly regional festival and we do it country style, where everyone from the community pulls together to make it happen.
We are proud supporters of Daylesford SES this year, and really acknowledge the work that they all do as volunteers. Speaking of volunteers – I would like to extend an enormous thankyou to the stellar ChillOut committee and also to those people in this town who really go above and beyond. Our government sponsors play a huge role as do our corporate and community partners. This festival is a whole of community festival and it is my true pleasure to be helping to create such an epic adventure.

Holy salami, the little guys may get a chance
H
ELP may be at hand for embattled small-scale food producers struggling against what they say is excessive regulation.
As head of the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance, Eganstown farmer Tammi Jonas, right, recently met state government bureaucrats to air the problems. She expects to hear more in a couple of weeks but said the reception had been “positive”. “Small-scale producers will be well served,” she said. Recently she wrote that the government’s attempts to reform planning provisions for free-range poultry and pigs were well short of recommendations by a 2016 report. After public consultation, the Animal Industries Advisory Committee sought to recognise the lower risk posed by smallscale pastured pig and poultry farms and suitable planning controls. It wanted these farms treated like grazing production. But, Ms Jonas said, once this plan went to Agriculture Victoria, consultation was limited to peak bodies for intensive agriculture – Australian Pork Limited, Meat and Livestock Australia, the Victorian Farmers Federation and a few cattle farmers. “There was no representation for pastured pig and poultry farmers, and Ag Vic came back with a draft that sees all pig and poultry farms with more than 200 birds or three sows needing a permit,” she wrote on her blog. A 2015 decision by Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal meant pig and poultry farmers need a permit. “This was a trigger for the need to reform the planning scheme,” she wrote. “Calling a farm with 100 pigs on 40 acres ‘intensive’ was deemed inappropriate, and the controls applied incommensurate with the risk.” Ms Jonas has also spoken out on the need for abattoirs for small-scale farmers. The loss of regional abattoirs means farmers drive very long distances to process small numbers of animals. “A shift to export focus at large plants has seen pigs ejected from multi-species red meat abattoirs. And at least one poultry abattoir in Victoria has denied farmers access based on the perception that they are ‘competition’ because they produce the same breed of ducks as the abattoir owner, and the same abattoir just informed small-scale growers that they will no longer process their birds at all – with many scheduled to process the very next day.” Ms Jonas and her partner last year undertook a taxpayer-funded tour of eight small abattoirs in the US. “We found that there are many committed people running viable businesses but that there are significant challenges to sustaining small-scale slaughter facilities, and in particular poultry abattoirs,” she wrote. Her campaigning edge was sharpened a couple of years back when just before flying to France and Italy to study charcuterie and salami making, she had meat inspectors come to her farm and destroy her personal supply of salami. Ms Jonas was also told not to run Salami Days because of health risks and says at least three other people were also told not to hold similar workshops. After confronting bureaucrats, she said regulations had been wrongly applied and she would go ahead with the Salami Days, as she has. “Just don’t let anyone leave with meat processed outside a licensed facility and you’re well within your rights to teach more people the delicious joys of skilful curing of whole carcasses,” she wrote. Concern about small producers has also been expressed by the Liberal candidate for the state seat of Macedon, Amanda Millar. “This region consistently sets the benchmark for producing Australia’s highest quality epicurean produce and it is many of our small boutique food producers who are leading the charge in these endeavours,” she told The Local. “I am hearing from small food enterprises in Hepburn Shire and Macedon Ranges who are concerned that Labor’s planning proposals will have a significant impact on their continued viability. “The Coalition will continue to be committed to support small food producers – and to ensure that the voices of these quality local producers will be heard.”

Pushing boundaries is the theme for 2018
I
NCLUDE the above mantra in your everyday living whether it be in new foods you try, coloured clothing you wear, colours to redecorate with or talking to the person standing next to you in a line.
It’s the year to experiment. Be the person you want to be. My most recent Daylesford client had me pushing many of his boundaries. A new colour scheme and new decorating items don’t sound like a big deal, do they? When redesigning or decorating, no person or place is the same. There are many factors to consider like sunlight, orientation on the property, lifestyle factors, material longevity, budget and most of all the personality of the person and dwelling. Yes, absolutely you can get the feel of a property and what it needs. Now this particular client is a bit of an alpha male. He loves nature but things were very dark and brown. Got to love my 4am brainstorms. When you need an answer to a problem it usually arrives in the very early hours. Rust is what he needed. Now, I have played with rust paint many times over the years and now it appears a television program has made it more mainstream. Easier to access then, so that’s great. Let’s use it. “I trust you” is what he said. The base coat is iron. Very, very dark. The oxidiser speeds up a natural process. The iron particles are rusted. This is still a process that requires some time. The length of time is dependent on the weather. As each coat of oxidiser was applied the process was just a mess. This impatient alpha male struggled to see the big picture. The weather was hot so no layers were added on these days which meant that every time my client turned around he was confronted with what he saw as a horrific mistake. Rust is a natural substance. It will keep aging and evolving. It is also a bit rough. I could not let him give up now. To take it off would have been a nightmare. A happy ending it was once the walls were finished. The rust has matured and the client is very happy. He calls it is his "living wall” because by utilising a natural process he sees the subtle colour variations during the different times of day. So, the moral of the story is still, push your boundaries. It may be scary and uncomfortable but you will feel great at the end. Love the rust.

HEN she’s not busy being out and about, Irene Hannah is busy at her home at Hepburn House.
Irene moved to the government-funded aged care home about six years ago, and even has her niece nearby, as she works at Hepburn House. Irene herself is so helpful at Hepburn House that she has been nicknamed ‘Sadie,’ because of the delight she has in everything from feeding the pets to clearing the tables and helping other residents. “I enjoy taking care of the ‘pets’ - the birds inside and the maggies that come to my door each day,” Irene says. For social people such as Irene who enjoy activities, Hepburn House offers a range of options including a variety of different groups, Morning Melodies, exercise classes, and regular bus trips. “I enjoy my little garden, and I also enjoy going out and about on the bus.” Irene is also often spotted out shopping on Vincent St – and returning home to Hepburn House is a comfort. “I feel safe at Hepburn House, the kind of safe you don’t feel when you’re home alone.” Hepburn House is a government-funded aged care facility which offers all levels of care, from respite to permanent. Residents are looked after by a team of personal care workers, with access to a team of allied health professionals who regularly visit Hepburn House, and there is also an in-house kitchen providing homestyle meals.
Hepburn House is located at 1 Hepburn Road, Daylesford. For more information, call 5348 8100 or visit www.hepburnhouse.com.au

Capturing faces the challenge for Chloe
C
HLOE Neath creates intricate realistic charcoal portraits on brown paper and is always searching for interesting faces to draw. From the very young to the elderly, beautiful, melancholy or unusual, when the Sandon artist is captivated by a face the challenge is to capture it accurately on the page. She told her story to Donna Kelly. “It’s been lovely that people have responded so well to the artworks I’ve exhibited so far. I think they realise how challenging it can be to create fine detail with charcoal, which makes them enjoy the realism of the drawings. I often work with gold leaf, and combined with the brown paper it gives the portraits a warmth and a vintage feel. Growing up I watched heroines in old black and white movies, and also enjoyed the Art Nouveau aesthetic. I think this influence is apparent in the ‘classic’ style of many of my portraits. Charcoal is one of those materials that can be really challenging to handle. I used it in life-drawing classes many years ago and loved the way that a charcoal smudge seemed to add warmth and flesh to the figure. But I hadn't been drawing since I left university in 1994. It wasn’t until about six years ago that I drew a face with some willow charcoal, and realised how much I'd missed the feel of drawing on paper. And since then creativity has become a huge part of my life. These days I'm working on weekends in my studio, and have managed to have two very successful solo exhibitions in Bendigo in 2014 and 2015, plus participating in a wide range of group exhibitions. I was even able to have the portrait I drew of Blanche d’Alpuget, the writer and wife of Bob Hawke, presented to her onstage as a thank you from The Bendigo Writer’s Festival. Bendigo is such a thriving, stimulating and supportive hub of creative activity, and I’m really enjoying the positive dynamic of the art communities in Ballarat, Castlemaine and Daylesford as they’re so close to where I live now. In 2017 I took part in my largest art project to date called The Baby Farmer. This tour consisted of an exhibition, an illustrated book and a play. It started back in 2015 when the director Nick Ravenswood from The Laudanum Project showed me a play he had written and asked me if I would like to illustrate the story to create a graphic novel together. After reading the beautiful, melancholy and very dark story, I could already visualise many of the scenes vividly in my head. So two years, 30 artworks and 500 hours of drawing, and a tour of Adelaide and Melbourne later, we have a stunning illustrated book for people to enjoy. This year for the first time I’m joining the Newstead Open Studios Art Trail which is part of Castlemaine Arts Open – Meet the Makers, happening in the Castlemaine region. It’s happening over the Labour Day weekend and the following weekend. This is Newstead’s fourth Open Studios Arts Trail and the largest number of artists participating so far. It’s such a great opportunity for people to explore Newstead and enjoy seeing the creative spaces of ceramicists, painters, sculptors and more at home in their studios. I’m really looking forward to people having a look at my studio set-up, and enjoying the portraits on display plus there will also be The Baby Farmer drawings and book to look at. The Newstead Art Trail really is a 'peek behind the curtain' and a fascinating experience to see how each artist creates their space."

Art-full Creative Challenge
Geraniums – worth a second look Geraniums, or to give them their correct name, zonal pelargoniums, have long been decried as second rate plants, worthy only of arid outback gardens as last resort plantings where nothing else seems to grow. Fortunately, they have clung tenaciously in the hearts and pot plant stands of our grandparents, and are mostly to be found in garden fetes and church bazaar trading stalls. But that has all changed and a recent revival movement from overseas has brought a new wave of bigger, brighter and more colourful geraniums into our lives, and hopefully our gardens. I first noticed them flourishing in the many window boxes throughout Europe with their lush, deep green leaves and large heads of pink and bright red double flowers, at first glance easily mistaken for floribunda roses. All beautiful and certainly hardy enough to grace and enhance any garden shrub bed and no longer relegated to the windy, parched, neglected corner of the garden, or left to selfstrangulate on a tired pot stand outside the laundry door. My renewed interest in zonal pelargoniums has led me to seek out some of the more interesting forms and colours of their flowers and variegated foliage forms. I found the simply-formed white-centred single red blooms of this plant, above, picture perfect. Zonal pelargoniums, like their more flamboyant cousins, the regal pelargoniums, are an almost bulletproof plant to grow either in containers or massed in a garden bed. By the way, there are “real” geraniums. They are a group of small free-flowering herbaceous perennial plants commonly called crane's-bill, native to Europe and North America, with flowers resembling the annual phlox plants. The most common of these is the red-flowered geranium sanguineum. There are also local native geranium species too, growing mostly in the heathlands and woodlands of our bush, a low growing trailing species with spidery leaves and tiny blue flowers. Like me, you have more than likely mistaken them for weeds and pulled them up. I've become a little more selective now that I have discovered their true identity.
Hi Glen, I've sent you a photograph, right, of a beautiful shrub that is a mass of flowers, for the first time since I planted it. My husband grew it for me from a cutting he brought home a couple of years ago. We haven't a clue what it is, he was attracted by its purple-coloured glossy leaves. We have never seen it before but hope you can identify it and tell us how best to nurture it. Penny Hi Penny, I really had to dig deep into the recesses of my floppy disc for this one. It's the first I can remember seeing since I left Adelaide last century. In South Australia they are mostly grown in shadehouses. It's actually a lovely member of the Brazilian acanthaceae family and is a jacobinia carnea - also known to some as justicia carnea. Jacobinia is an evergreen shrub coming from the rainforest areas and doesn't thrive in exposed positions, preferring to be planted in the shade of a fence or a shady spot under a tree or verandah. They also appreciate having a deep layer of organic mulch to keep the roots cool and moist. From your photograph, yours appears to be in a perfect spot. The glossy green leaves and deep purple underneath contrast beautifully with their torch-like heads of rosy-pink blooms. After it has finished flowering, prune it back by about one third, and give it a light dressing of organic fertiliser to assist new growth. - Glen

Surrealist journey
A
USTRALIAN Decorative Fine Arts Society Central Highlands will launch its 2018 lecture program with a journey to the early 20th Century surrealist movement with Picasso, Man Ray & Max Ernst through the Eyes of Lee Miller & Roland Penrose
On Thursday, March 1 at the Kyneton Town Hall, Antony Penrose will present a unique perspective on three key artists of the 20th Century: Picasso, Man Ray & Max Ernst. All three were close friends of the surrealist photographer Lee Miller and her husband, surrealist artist Roland Penrose. This is the hidden part of a significant friendship, which spanned the surrealist movement, and the last 30 years of Picasso’s life with the unique perspective of someone who witnessed some of the events himself, using the words and images of those who were there. Roland Penrose is generally credited as bringing surrealism to Britain and was a driving force of the movement, producing some of its most enduring images. He developed close and lasting friendships with Picasso, Man Ray, and Max Ernst. Antony Penrose is the co-director of the Lee Miller Archives and The Penrose Collection in England. He is the son of the American photographer, Lee Miller, and Roland Penrose, surrealist artist, and biographer of Picasso, Miró, Man Ray and Tàpies. Details: Norma on 5427 4918.
