I ANTHROPOMETRY STUDIO PROJECT BRIEF TYPE :A dedicated institution which preserves and promotes the classical, evanescent arts and crafts of India. AREA :550 SQ.M SITE : Bank of lake PARIEJ, Gujarat.

CASESTUDY “ZARDOSI” thread work - Gujarat Hand weaved work with threads of gold and silver. A craft that traces its roots to the 17 th century.

INTENT Shedding away the general notion that a room should be cuboidal in volume, the exploration of different “POLYHEDRONS” as space defining units was done. The end user being the very creative people like fabric designers, weavers, artisans and craftsmen, an attempt to reflect their individuality through an innovative built form was done. The polyhedron finalized as the elemental unit : “PENTAGONAL ANTIPRISM”

Perceived as an unit of space, “PENTAGONAL ANTIPRISM was analysed thoroughly. How its unusual angles and inclined walls effects the anthropometry was studied.

First floor plan

Ground floor plan

Master layout : Clusters of the pentagonal anti prisms planned . Each cluster performing a different, solitary function. Hand made model - Light play and shadow cast by the anti prism units.

Derivation of the primary layout included isomorphic multiplication of polyhedron units and their hierarchial organisation to form multiple built masses, accommodating their designated functions.

The integrated facilities in the art and craft centre includes : 1.Admin office ,Reception area or Visitors orientation area 2.Souvenir shop (permanent display of arts produced) 3.Exibition space, Event space - open (for trade fair or public workshop) 4.3 Workshops facilitating dedicated area to produce/ practice the art/craft : MUD , WOOD AND TEXTILE 5.Artists ,Staff and Visitors accommodation 6.Cafeteria

II MATERIAL STUDIO PROJECT BRIEF TYPE : A - House for the tribe “ KARBI “ of Assam using BAMBOO exclusively B - Weekend getaway home for a doctor and his family using STEEL as primary and glass. and concrete as secondary materials. AREA : A - 70 SQ.M B - 1130 SQ.M SITE : A - Hills of Assam . (karbi anglong) B - Bank of river Mahi , Vadodara, Gujarat.

CASESTUDY The tribal houses of Assam made entirely out of “Bamboo “ - Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, Bhopal , M.P ,India

INTENT Understanding two materials so constrasting - BAMBOO and STEEL in the same time frame sparked interesting juxtaposition of thoughts. Both materials were used in their raw form and natural texture ; exposed to portray how material moulds a building. A thorough study of the materials led to the concept to design the bones and skin of the building using just one or two materials : “steel with glass “ in weekend home, and “bamboo” in assam tribal house.

UPGRADATIONS VIA DESIGN ● Provision of water tanks

(under and above ground) ● Roof construction involving water harvesting system via bamboo ducts, to facilitate water during summers. ● Individual toilets made with waterproofing bamboo floors. ● Improved ventilation through windows.

A S S A M H O U S E

Layout includes a modest home for 4 members : common living space . semi open kitchen/dining two bedrooms one toilet (preferably away from main rooms) rain water harvesting system (tank)

Bamboo is used exclusively in construction foundation to door frames and furniture with different methodology and joineries.

Hand made model - An attempt to depict the bamboo texture.

Plan Brief G.F - Living, dining, kitchen, guest bedroom, pool, home theatre and outhouse. F.F -Master suite , 3 bed rooms gym, library and open deck. Process -Basic massing of modules

First floor

Material application : Steel - I sections for columns and beams. Steel deck floor plate -Slab. Glass - French windows and panelling Concrete - hollow blocks - Walls, partition walls.

This connection to nature builds up an environment of

relief and comfort. The open space tends to flow into the river, crossing the pool on its way.

III CONTEXTUAL STUDIO PROJECT BRIEF TYPE : High density - low rise housing ; redesigning a residence cluster in the vernacular styled “POLS” of Dakor. AREA : 535 SQ.M SITE : Gopalpura Pol, Dakor, Gujarat, India.

CASESTUDY The POLS of Dakor’s heart, with narrow streets and houses made out of timber frame (vernacular architecture), in 1800s.

INTENT Issues with the “POL” houses such as insufficient ventilation, lack of community open space, inability to adapt to increasing traffic conditions and an unhygenic, crowded street scape were identified. A cluster of houses was selected to be upgraded to improve the overall living conditions of the 10 families residing there. Fabricating a housing community that responded to the “CONTEXT” of the pols and the users’s traditional living patterns and simultaneously enhanced their lifestyle was the challenge.

Y The X ; Y ratio of height vs street width highlights as an importantdesign constraint.

The scheme was to design 10 appartments : 6 - 2BHK (67sq.m) 2- 3BHK (90sq.m) 2- 3BHK (110sq.m) for the selected cluster. The concept, derived from study of existing issues was massing the four storeys in a manner where each apartment would enjoy open terraces, cross ventilation and winter sun in this urban dense environment

Street elevation - after the redesigning The second and third floor consists of similar modules, enlarged and rotated in a position so as to solve the issue of ventilation. Residents are also provided with a common open space (COP).In the original “pol streets, the lack of this area is a common problem. Individual unit plan, area 90sq.m -3BHK

Hand made model - the shafts created by fragmented massing allow better cross ventilation

Green community open space provision - a major element

IV INSTITUTIONAL STUDIO PROJECT BRIEF TYPE : Designing a bus terminal which accommodates 1000 buses and serves about 50,000 passengers in a day. AREA : 30,000 SQ,M SITE : Opposite Geeta Mandir Bus Terminal, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India

CASESTUDY Ranip bus terminus, Ahmedabad, Gujarat Vadodara central bus terminus, Vadodara, Gujarat.

INTENT Working on an “INSTITUTIONAL” building scale, the primary focus was to learn how this grandeur of the scale effects the design criteria. The inherent idea was to develop the phase II of the existing bus terminal at Ahmedabad . From vehicular flow patterns, passenger movements and “bus” pathways; everything was schematically analyzed. Connecting the terminal to the local mode of transport and the existing phase I terminal was also planned. Building with the dynamic lines of ”movement” as walls, centering around its “flow” conceptualized the building.

Fundamental design aspects : 1. The circulation - passenger, vehicular and their co-ordination. 2. Responding to contextual issues encroachment, parking and revenue generation. (PPP scheme project). 3.Heritage site - Astodia darwaja

Inspired by the dynamism of perpetual flow of people and vehicles, the concept was to blend my built form into this vector lines. The built mass is divided in three parts : Lv 1 - Passenger Atrium Lv 2 - Retail Concourse Lv - 3 Skywalk

The skywalk connects the terminal to geeta mandir bus terminal phase I on north end and heritage view restaurant on south end.

The Astodia darwaja heritage site liimitations - no built structure in 100 M radius , maximum height limited to 15 M in 300 M radius.

Terminal layout includes :

Lv 1 -Passenger atrium

1.Main building 30 bus bays (interstate) Paseenger waiting area Retail showrooms - 20 Terminal offices Bus staff rest area Food court

Lv 2 - Retail concourse

2. Secondary building Passenger accommodation (Dormitory and rooms) Restaurant - heritage view Flea market - local vendors (connected to main building via skywalk)

Lv 3 - Skywalk

3. In site Local transport node (BRTS, city and airport shuttle). Open public plaza and Public park - recreational purpose Parking 2 and 4 wheeler. Bus workshop and idle bays

3D views - In the triple heighted atrium, a green heritage gallery was introduced, which provided a glimpse of the city’s rich heritage to the people coming to the city for the first time through the transport hub. This along with the heritage view restaurant, was a proposal to respond to the heritage site in the vicinity of the terminal.

V BASIC DESIGN AND WORKSHOP

I and II : Understanding fundamentals of visual perception and geometry of space. Learning design principles, their applications and basics.

III and IV : Study of forms and their geometry in man made environment and their inter relation. Exploring abstract ideas and concepts in design and using them in planning.

Volume deduction - Models of volume 25 cm sq were made. Cut outs of volume in grids of 5 by 5 cm done to consciously observe space creation by volumetric deduction of space. Abstract adjectives depiction

SPACENESS

Initial excercises to in initiate the process of abstract architectectural imagination.

Exploring polyhedrons The excercise involved creating repetitive but ingenious spaces by multiplying polyhedron units. The underlying character of these unusual spaces were the key architectural elements they presented : column, wall or room. Ulterior motive was to observe the behaviour of a space that is not essentially a cuboid. Repetition of modules in single direction Repetition of modules in two directions Repetition of modules in three directions (X-axis) (X and Y axis) (X, Y and Z axis)

Transfiguring paper (2D) into structure (3D) via “Surface modulation” A paper module was selected to form models using different multiplication approaches.. Analysis of the space was done using colours and photos. This exercise’s key intent was the metamorphosis of a two dimensional picture into three dimensional carving. An initial model was made in Sketchup to finalize the carved form. ‘SIFOREX’ block was carved to materialize the transformation of the dimensions. The class then designed a mural in which all the carved blocks were I installed on walls to form a mural using nails and mortar.

Symmetrical

Manipulating aluminium rods to form spatial frames was the fundamental. These frames made by 10 students were then combined to lay the outline of a full scale, life size model. Iron rods with “kantan” (cloth) and threads constituted the installation.

DESIGNING A PROTOTYPE UNIT OF WORLD’S FIRST

DYNAMIC CLIMATE RESPONSIVE FAÇADE -THE MASHRABIYAS, AL BAHAR TOWERS.

A software-driven design that create an intricate modern version of the ”MASHRABIYA” to create a dynamic façade. The units are closed and opened in accordance with the sun path movement.

•The façade is a series of semi-transparent umbrella like components: the MASHRABIYAS. •Each tower has 1049 MASHRABIYA shading devices. •Each unit weighs about 1.5 tons

“MASHRABIYA” is the Arabic term given to a type of projecting oriel window enclosed with carved wood lattice work.

A MANUALLY OPERATED WORKING PROTOTYPE MODEL of the single mashrabiya unit was built in group to understand its functioning.

Joining units to form a module.

Closed - creating an opaque facade(during sunglare)

Semi open - creating an translucent facade (daylight)
