HINATA JAPANESE CENTRE VO TRONG NGHIA ARCHITECTS [VTN]

Ho Chi Minh City, VIETNAM

Hinata Japanese Centre is a kindergarten situated in the Ho Chi Minh City focused to attract Japanese students. The brief also requested an apartment along with it core function of a school. The design was aligned with the firm’s philosophy of against compromising greenery over modern day construction. Hence the structure that is vertically divided by six floors are stacked to create green niches for every classroom.

This project was freshly brought to the firm, which why i got to work on the concept stage of the design process. Part of that process was to build concept models, detail physical model and 3D digital model along with the section, elevation and section drawings of the design.

The Building taking a stubborn stand touching the greenery compromised over the construction of a building. A concept inspired from Forest Mountains in the growing city of Ho Chi Minh battling the problems of developing cities such as temperature rise, pollution, or energy shortages to restore the damage done by the process of construction. The University façade is woven horizontally by the greens at intervals breaking the form in harmony. Offering hints of nature to each program of the building that is inundated with trees in the courtyard that partially offers circulation to an estimated five thousand students.

The project had reached the detailing stage when I joined the team. My role as an intern was to prepare the sectional detailed drawings along with the façade drawings layered with multiple areas of information such as the vegetation pot, lighting, and material.

LE GIANG RESORT VO TRONG NGHIA ARCHITECTS [VTN]

Yunnan, CHINA.

SITE

The firm was presented with an opportunity to develop a part of a small city of Yunnan, northwest part of China. The area was adjacent to a lake on the southern side. Farmlands on the northern side, Villages on either sides and mountains in the distance. The project had the divided focus between the villas, a Resort/Hotel and a restaurant.

The Hotel building was designed as a center. A center that would create focus and enhance and present the awe-inspiring views of the site. The shape and the position also emphasiz es the landscape while respecting its cultural and physical context. This space changes the one’s experience. A central courtyard breaks the boundaries of what is inside and what is outside.

The restaurant building was places centraly for easy accesibility, designed as a place which al lows a pause in your life, a stop to admire the natural beuty, the city of Yunnan is. The col umns of harmony were added by studying or ganic foliage of trees, Trees that shield us.

KYUSHU BUNKA GAKUEN HIGH SCHOOL

Kyushu Bunka Gakuen Kindergarten is located in Nagasaki, Japan. The project consisted of re-developing the landscape along with the interiors of the existing building and additional construction of a typical Japanese tea room for the children. A community room for neighbors had to be included on the same campus. The aim of the design was a sophisticated merger between the vernacular values and the contemporary techniques that would satisfy each function to all groups of users. Along with the design the firm also designed furniture as part of the interior redesign.

I, as an intern, made basic layouts of the art rooms as well as prepared models for various design options for the same.

MARTIAN ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH CENTRE

RIDGE A, ANTARCTICA [semester 8]

Altitude: 4,053 meters

Highest Temperature: 4 Degree Celsius

Lowest Temperature: -70 Degree Celsius

Average winter: June/July/August

Snow accumulation: Average 1.2 meters

Extreme weather conditions demand micro details for the building to function. Meters of snowfall raise the ground level every year. The design thus is lifted above the ice sheet, consisting of ten modules. Five on the either side interconnected by a bridge and both sides joined by circulation bridge separating the housing modules to the research modules, all with adjustable legs provided in trusses. The trusses are the main component holding basic ten modules. Each module has a total of nine tensile cables passing through four blocks which are pulled at the intersection of the truss on either side converting it into a post-tensioned structure. Module walls have seven layers of insulation to maintain the atmosphere inside the building.

The layout is kept circular in order to avoid heavy wind force. The distance between each module and the pivoted wall at the interior bottom also allows wind to pass by the structure. Circular form also benefits the aspect of circulation connected by the insulated glass-covered small bridges.

Five modules on either side are the building are joined by two exposed bridges providing a sense of entry, space for incrementality in the future, and also fire safety between sleeping modules and research modules.

INNOVATION FORUM

ASHRAM RD, AHMEDABAD

[semester 9]

There aren’t many organizations established since the national innovation foundation in 2000 to contribute to India’s process of emerging into a sustainable developing nation.

The innovation forum aimed to provide a place where ideas and practices for development are created and shared. The building takes a stance to support the government of India’s missions ‘Start-up India’ and ‘Make in India’, having various facilities to explore, experiment and exhibit. Located on an ideal Ashram road in Ahmedabad, a central business district that can provide a range of disciplines, developers, investors, and entrepreneurs who could engage their resources.

The design mainly focuses on three functions, one the Innovation department experimenting and developing various subjects, second the Forum promoting the innovations as well as hosting numerous public events, and lastly the building serves as an urban space to the city as the site is facing Sabarmati River. The design insert, rather than being one intimidating building it is broken down into blocks according to their functionality by three pedestrian links that are stitching ashram road together with the riverfront. The functions to be undisturbed by the public are raised above a distinct plinth to establish the public and the private within the structure. To make the building more extroverted, the roofs of all the blocks are interconnected and bridged by a link overlooking the city on one side and the river on the other. The functions are parted by a large sunken courtyard offering an open-air theatre for the internal as well as external events.

REHABILITATION CENTRE

PARO, BHUTAN [semester 5]

Climate conditions of the paro city and the location of the site urges to experiment with the material which would allow the building to provide the peaceful atmosphere it requires. The site is located on a hilly terrain beside the banks of river Paro chu, The design aims to blend in with the mesmerizing surroundings as well as to withstand the natural challenges. The building is raised above the ground to let the rainwater pass. Curves, imitates the organic curves of the mountains behind. Roof of the building are also designed in a way that would not accumulate any snow or water on the top. Said roof has layered wooden truss, below the finished top layer. The Structure is supported on cylindrically placed columns, that bifurcates the private functions of the building from the circulation and the public areas. Two of such cylinders also provide the entries to the main floor secured with glass facade. The roof of the building imitates the organic curves of the mountains behind the building.

TEXTILE HUB

AHMEDABAD, INDIA

[SEMESTER 4]

The textile industry of Ahmadabad city dates back to the 19th century. Textile mills employed approximately thousands of people from across the country and mainly cotton garments were manufactured.

To reignite the concept that has been buried over the years, the principle program of the building offers talented workers an opportunity to manufacture and sell their items.

Similar to the idea of program, that is promoting the heritage the planning of the building is also done in the similar manner. The idea of ‘pol hosing’ of Ahmadabad has. Similar to the traditional ‘Pol housing of Ahmadabad, textile hub has various clusters catering to various needs of the cotton making process. Clusters that form a ‘gully’ [a street]. Which ultimately becomes the exhibition of the process along with an occasional display of the textile art.

The site is densely green and is a peaceful buffer from the noise of the city, which allows one to create another street that is journey on the roof, connecting each cluster by bridges. End of the roof trails lets one off in the public plaza.

Planning offers both, the workers and the visitors equal facilities to enjoy their presence. Considering the city’s harsh summers the materials are also kept traditional, with the helping landscape around the structure.
