What makes a beer a craft beer? Trying to define craft beer is a difficult task, as beer can be very subjective and personal experience. While craft beer is growing in popularity, even the most ardent craft beer drinkers may not know just what qualifies a beer for craft beer status. Defining craft beer can be difficult, but the Brewers Association says there are certain criteria that American brewers should meet before they can be characterized as craft brewers.

cannot produce more than six million barrels of beer per year.

Size: Craft brewers are small, with CraftBeer. com saying breweries

Traditional: Craft brewers must have a majority of their total beverage

4

May 2018 | Wine & BREW Guide

Independent: Ownership also determines if a brewer can be characterized as a craft brewer. The Brewers Association says that, to be considered a craft brewer, no more than 25 percent of the brewery can be owned or controlled (or equivalent economic interest) by an alcohol industry member that is not itself a craft brewer.

alcohol volume in beers whose flavor derives from traditional or innovative brewing ingredients and their fermentation. Those requirements are more stringent, but there are some additional characteristics that help to define the craft brewing industry. For example, the Brewers Association notes that many craft brewers are heavily involved in their communities. Such involvement may involve craft brewers sponsoring local events, but may also include philanthropy, product donations and

volunteerism. Innovation is another hallmark of craft brewers. Craft brewers often offer their own interpretations of classic beer styles, giving these styles unique twists. That departure from the norm is what draws beer drinkers to craft beers. The craft beer business is booming and has revolutionized how people think about and consume beer. More information about craft beer is available at www.brewersassociation.org.

• to make the best beer and food possible • to utilize local business, artisans, farmers, and craftsmen whenever possible • to never sacrifice quality for growth Despite the challenges and obstacles along the way, we’ve done a pretty good job sticking to those principles. Going local isn’t always easy, but it’s worth the extra time, money, and effort. It’s better for the community, the local economy, and in the end, all of us. Doing things the right way, rather than the quick way, or cheaper way, is how we operate. It’s real. It’s authentic. It’s Old Forge Brewing Company… an authentic American craft beer experience.

Explore a nearby winery or vineyard Those who enjoy sipping from a bottle of red, white or blush wine but find that a trip to the Bordeaux region of France simply isn’t in the cards right now needn’t give up their desires to visit a winery or vineyard. Wineries and fully functioning vineyards dot the landscape of our local area. In fact, wine afficionados may be surprised to learn of a winery or vineyard is just a short drive from home. Visiting a local winery or vineyard can be educational and fun. Wine tours can be entertaining because some allow visitors to choose their own tasting adventure depending on their level of interest in wine, their budget and what they would like to get out of the experience. Some wineries and vineyards offer extensive tours of the harvesting and production aspects of wine-making. Others will give visitors a chance to mingle among wine barrels and witness the fermentation process. Still, some wineries or vineyards may limit visitors to tasting rooms where they can sample select vintages.

Attending a wine tasting can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon and support a local business. The chance to support a local business is another reason to make a trip to a nearby winery or vineyard. These facilities often produce wine and sell it close to home.

By supporting small business, consumers can contribute to the success and the diversity of offerings where they live. Wine tastings are an enjoyable recreational

pursuit. Remember to drink responsibly, and join the mailing lists of nearby wineries and vineyards to learn more about tasting events and food pairings. Wine & BREW Guide | May 2018

6 Tips For Planning Amazing Winery & Brewery Tours 1. Look at a Trail Map. To make the most out of your time, choose locations that are part of the same trail system and close together. 2. Pick a date. Keep in mind, visiting wineries and breweries during slower seasons (winter & spring) can yield a more personal experience.

3. Decide on transportation. Party buses & limousines are popular options. Your chauffeur will be familiar with the areas, can offer tips on the best tasting experiences and allow everyone to enjoy the tastings. 4. Book in advance. If you’ve got your heart set on a particular date and vehicle, it’s best to book at least three weeks in advance.

5. Get an early start to avoid the crowds. You’ll make better use of your time plus there will be less people around, so most likely you’ll get more one-on-one attention. 6. Stay hydrated. All those sips can add up quickly; make sure to drink plenty of water between stops.

Whether you’re planning a bridal party celebration, birthday party, or simply a day out with friends, our tours are the best way to experience the wineries and breweries of the Susquehanna Valley, Hershey-Harrisburg, Finger Lakes regions and beyond!

Winery & Brewery Packages include: • Transportation service in your choice of luxury vehicle • Experienced, courteous chauffeur

• Souvenir gifts • Gourmet bagged lunch • Bottled water

How to Pair Wine and Cheese Wine and cheese are a match made in culinary heaven. When enjoyed together, their unique qualities enhance each other, creating new flavor profiles and delighting the senses. However, with the infinite number of combinations, finding the perfect pairings may seem overwhelming. Wines vary in acidity, sweetness, and structure; cheeses boast different flavors, fat content, and textures. Where is the balance? 1. START WITH INTENSITY. Compare the respective power of the products. Light goes with light; bold with bold. Fresh, simple cheeses tend to be enhanced by elegant, delicate wines. By the same token, a robust red can take on the bigger flavors of a stronger cheese. 2. CONSIDER THE FLAVOR. Try to match the flavors (acidity, saltiness, sweetness, bitterness, etc.), taking into account how the cheese’s texture will contribute. Complement or contrast by smoothing out a wine’s bracing acidity with a creamier cheese or accentuating a lighter wine’s acidity with a harder cheese. When in doubt, high acidity and some sweetness are a cheese’s best friends when it comes to wine. 3. THINK REGIONALLY. As the old adage goes, “What grows together goes together.” Each of Italy’s 20 regions boasts its own selection of wine and cheeses, thanks to traditional production methods and biodiversity. The local products naturally connect, creating simple and elegant pairings. 4. THROW THE RULES OUT THE WINDOW. Like we said: the wine and cheese worlds are both endless, creating an infinite number of possible pairings. While the above serves as a good guideline, don’t forget to be creative. 5. START TASTING! To begin your own wine-and-cheese education, we recommend setting a table with one bottle of wine, four varied cheeses (at room temperature), and a loaf of rustic bread. Sip the wine with a clean palate, take a bite of the first cheese, and note the flavor combinations. Take another sip of wine after swallowing the cheese, and write down your observations. Cleanse your palate with a piece of bread, and repeat. This self-guided class is especially fun with a fellow “student” (or two, or three).

Happy pairing! 22
