Dating back to 1938, Norfolk Botanical Garden has a deep-seeded history, beginning with a Work Progress Administration (WPA) grant for an Azalea Garden project. A group of more than 200 African-American women and 20 African-American men were assigned to clear 30 acres of dense, native vegetation. The workers then planted 4,000 azaleas, several thousand shrubs and trees, and 100 bushels of daffodils. Throughout the years, the Garden continued to grow and expand – adding a Japanese Garden, Colonial Garden, and Rose Garden – which has sprouted All-American Rose Selection winners, a stunning butterfly garden and butterfly house and many others.

Battleship

Wisconsin Berthed at Nauticus, the Battleship Wisconsin (BB64) is one of four Iowaclass battleships – the largest and last battleship ever built by the U.S. Navy. She was launched in April of 1944 and decommissioned in September 1991, having earned a total of six battle stars for service in World War II and Korea, and a Navy Unit Commendation for service during the 1991 Gulf War. She was subsequently struck from the Naval Vessel Register (NVR), and as of December 14, 2009, was donated to the City of Norfolk for permanent use as a museum ship. In 2012, the Battleship Wisconsin was listed in the Virginia Landmark Register. The ship is 887 feet long and weighs 45,000 tons; it was, literally, a “City at Sea” with a crew of nearly 3,000 men during her heyday in WWII. Since assuming official stewardship, Nauticus has begun opening

previously sealed off interior spaces of the battleship for the public to explore. Visitors can start “walking the decks of history” inside Nauticus with a six-minute introductory film, Forward for Freedom, which brings the Wisconsin to life through the stories and commentary of those who served aboard. On board the ship, an exhibit located at the entrance to the Wardroom, For All Those in Uniform Who Have Served, pays tribute to the armed forces, with an initial focus on Senator John W. Warner, who was instrumental in bringing the Battleship Wisconsin to Norfolk. Walk onto the Wisconsin’s teak deck, explore her from bow to stern, and step into the ship’s Wardroom on self-guided tour. Spend the day at Nauticus and experience maritime science, history and fun!

ake the afternoon to explore Downtown Norfolk’s waterfront maritime science center, Nauticus, for a full spectrum of hands-on exhibits focused on the immense power of the sea and Norfolk’s unique seaport. Begin your journey by taking in Our Mighty Seaport exhibit, which explores the fascinating world of maritime commerce. Families can navigate a tugboat down a busy waterway and receive “real time” information on ships sailing past Nauticus. Venture outside the exhibit walls and catch a glimpse of giant cranes, tugs, sailboats, and cargo ships from the newly renovated Elizabeth River Observation Deck. Relive the past with Guns, Sweat, and Gears: Anatomy of a Battleship, an exhibit including enormous gun devices, tools, and personal mementos from Norfolk’s own Battleship Wisconsin. View the mighty warship from the Wisconsin Vista filled with displays that tell the Wisconsin’s exciting story—a story that comes to life when you actually step on her teak deck. You can’t miss Science on a Sphere, a six-foot globe displaying weather phenomena around the world. Explore current Earth Science events while interacting with a Nauticus educator. Visit the Shark Lab, where visitors can learn about shark conservation and meet Nauticus’ sharks, along with the residents of Horseshoe Crab Cove. Be sure to visit our other marine life, including tropical fish, seahorses, and one giant green moray eel. Playing throughout your Nauticus Day, inside the Nauticus Theater are a variety of high-definition films. These include the Academy Award®-nominated film, The Living Sea, as well as a rotating schedule of entertaining CineMuse Hi-Def Cinema programs which focus on our ocean world. Outside the theater, step inside a submersible called The Clelia and take on the role of a pilot or a NOAA scientist. You and your family can control an actual 9-foot long robotic arm to collect samples and artifacts from the seabed or operate a remote-controlled camera to explore the wreck site. On any given day, numerous programs are conducted with Nauticus education staff and volunteers that can include explosive science demos or building your own underwater Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV). Make sure to visit the Hampton Roads Naval Museum on the second floor, which examines more than two centuries of interesting naval activity in and around the Coastal Virginia harbor. Food and refreshments are offered at the Outtakes Café located inside on the first floor. During the early 1900’s, stately homes were built along the tree-lined Hague canal, making it the fashionable place to live through the first half of the century. During the 60’s and 70’s, students, writers, and musicians crowded Ghent, the ultimate artists’ haven. Fast-forward to 2013. The main thoroughfare, Colley Avenue, and adjacent 21st and 22nd Streets are still a hub of activity, offering eclectic eateries, unique shops, art galleries, winery, breweries and antique stores. The Naro Extended Arts Cinema on Colley Avenue screens foreign and independent films. Doumar’s Cones and BBQ, an old-fashioned drive-in, whose owner created the world’s first ice cream cone machine, is located just a few blocks from the main drag.

The cobble-stone streets and grand old homes of Norfolk’s historic Freemason District offer a view into a bygone era. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Historic Freemason is located along the Elizabeth River just down the brick pathway from Town Point Park, Nauticus, and the Battleship Wisconsin. According to the marker, which can be found on West Freemason Street near Duke Street, it was first settled in 1686, when “one hundred acres of land in this vicinity were granted to the Elizabeth River Parish for a glebe.” It is the city’s only neighborhood which accurately depicts a visual chronology of architectural styles over three centuries. Today, Freemason has a growing collection of assorted restaurants, antique shops, and boutiques. Freemason Abbey Restaurant, housed in a 136 year-old church, has been a local’s favorite for almost 20 years. Other landmarks include Serendip, a shop full of fine furnishings, art and antiques, and the Pagoda Garden Tea House & Gallery, complete with the largest Koi pond on the east coast, a gift to Norfolk from the Taiwan Provincial Government. Other neighborhood favorites include Voilà, Cure Brasserie & Coffee House, Shady Grove Marketplace, and Satya Yoga.

The

Mermaid Parade The Story Behind Norfolk’s Public Art Project

Posing gracefully at street corners and storefronts, decorating banners and signs, and showing up in local art shops and galleries are Norfolk’s cultural icon, the mermaid. Today, the mermaid symbol is synonymous with civic pride, and it exemplifies Norfolk’s appreciation of the local arts community, its dedication to the arts and maintaining Norfolk’s rapid pace of growth, economically, and culturally. Mermaid statues began dotting downtown in 2000, shortly after the city branded the image of a young, free-spirited mermaid as its official city symbol as part of the “Life, Celebrated Daily” campaign. The city had been undergoing major revitalization efforts, and the mermaid drove home the idea a “New Norfolk” was being born. “We had some issues with the perception of Norfolk, both by those outside and inside,” says Bob Batcher, the city’s Director of Communications. “We needed a new brand.” In November 1999, attorney and well-known Norfolk advocate Peter Decker, Jr. introduced the idea of mermaid statues at a meeting with hundreds of business and civic leaders at Nauticus. Decker accredited his wife, Bess, with the Mermaids on Parade idea—she was inspired by the Cows on Parade in Chicago after a recent trip. Starting in the summer of 2000, the street corners, parks, and storefronts of Norfolk began filling with mermaids. Business and civic leaders jumped at the opportunity to have their own mermaids. “We just sort of let it go and the public embraced it,” says Batcher. The mermaids are all designed and decorated by local artists, and many of them represent a theme related to their location. There are now mermaid trails, books, jewelry, sculptures, art—anything you can think of, the mermaids have inspired. “The mermaids have really touched lives in a variety of ways,” says Batcher. “And they really show the value of public art.” To learn more about Norfolk’s mermaids and to download a mermaid walking tour map, visit www.mermaidsonparade.com.

Virginia Stage Company at Norfolk’s Wells Theatre

757-627-1234 or www.vastage.com Virginia Stage Company has emerged as one of the country’s leading regional theaters — where professional artisans produce a seasonal mix of Broadway musicals, world premieres and well-loved favorites. The Neil Simon classic “The Odd Couple,” new historic drama “The Whipping Man,” the world premiere of the slightly sexy and charming “Frog Kiss,” and Coastal Virginia seasonal favorite, Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” are among VSC’s outstanding lineup for 2013. VSC’s performance home, the beautifully restored Wells Theatre, c. 1913, is a majestic example of Beaux-Arts Classicism and a stunning place to enjoy live theater. Located at 108 E. Tazewell Street, Downtown Norfolk.

Virginia Symphony Orchestra

757-892-6366 or www.virginiasymphony.org Under the leadership of GRAMMY-winning director, JoAnn Falletta, the Virginia Symphony is

Founded in 1920, it is ranked in the top ten percent of professional orchestras nationwide and serves the entire Southeastern Virginia region with Classics, Pops, and Family concert series in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Newport News, and Williamsburg as well as performances in outlying Virginia and North Carolina communities for more than 200,000 concert-goers every year. Additionally, the orchesta annually reaches 63,000 children, students, and lifelong learners with its education and community programs. The Virginia Symphony has performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, and is the cornerstone of performing arts in Southeastern Virginia.

The Venue ON 35th

757-469-0337 or www.venue-35.com Since opening in 2007, The Venue on 35th has been a welcomed addition to Norfolk’s cultural attractions by providing an inclusive and supportive atmosphere for local artists. Many poets, playwrights, spoken word artists, musicians, and singers call The Venue home — “it’s a safe place to try out new work” or “I come here for inspiration.” The Venue, located in Norfolk’s Park Place neighborhood, is an intimate classy café-style performance space where weekly open mic events draw performing artists and audience members from all over the region. The Venue is also home to Virginia Playwrights Forum. Here, new works for the stage can be seen as staged readings and full productions. The grounds of The Venue have been beautifully landscaped and contain an outdoor stage where open mic events, concerts, and theatrical productions are also performed. Located at 631 35th Street.

2013

ach spring the Virginia Arts Festival offers a diverse season of world-renowned artists, commissioned works, extraordinary collaborations, and unforgettable performances of exciting music, dance, and theater. The 2013 season features more than 50 performances from Norfolk to Virginia Beach to Williamsburg—we offer an unparalleled chance to experience, see, and hear the Arts! The Virginia Arts Festival, in its 17th season, presents an unprecedented collection of cultural artistry. Love classical music? Jazz? World music? Are you a ballet lover? Theater buff? Whatever your tastes, there’s a Virginia Arts Festival performance for you. Britain’s famed Birmingham Royal Ballet returns to the Festival with a sumptuously staged, beguilingly danced production of Coppélia, ballet’s classic romantic comedy about a life-size doll, jealous lovers, and the merry mayhem that accompanies it all. “Mischievous and vivid...there is fun everywhere” (Daily Express, UK). The Virginia International Tattoo is an awe-inspiring show drawing fans by the thousands from across the country! The Virginia International Tattoo is the largest military spectacular in North America, rivaling the famed Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and hosting hundreds of international performers in a spectacle of music and might. This celebration of patriotism, pride and international good will, featuring military bands and drill teams, massed pipes and drums, dancers and acrobats, and a finale that will leave you breathless. New Thursday evening performance added this year! A Prairie Home Companion—You’ve loved the show for years—now be part of the live audience as Garrison Keillor leads an ensemble cast through his entertaining live radio show filled with special guest performances, quirky comedy sketches, musical interludes, and Keillor’s signature monologue, “The News from Lake Wobegon.” The newest Festival favorite! FLYING PROMS – Symphonic Airshow Spectacular, this thrilling show pairs the soaring sounds of the Virginia Symphony with breathtaking maneuvers of vintage aircraft, ending in a light-up-the-sky fireworks finale. Reserved VIP seating available—order early to avoid disappointment! Each festival season introduces audiences to an eclectic mix of highly acclaimed artists from around the world. This year, the Festival is pleased to welcome postmodern diva phenom Meow Meow. Discover an artist as gifted as she is provocative, hailed by the London Times for putting cabaret “back where it belongs: out on the edge and in your face.” “This dazzlingly multi-talented performer casts an instant spell of enchantment. Superb” (The Age, Australia). Each spring, world, rock, and jazz music are a strong feature of the festival. In 2013, join us for Béla Fleck, The African Project - Banjo Master. Béla Fleck has taken many musical journeys, but his most recent—to Africa, the place where the banjo was born—has yielded a treasure trove of discovery. Throw Down Your Heart, the documentary and recordings that resulted from his exploration, has won rave reviews and a pair of Grammys. Los Angeles Times says this concert is “an exhilarating feast of sight and sound.” Singer and actress Audra McDonald is the Judy Garland of this generation—a performer who captivates audiences and holds them in her spell. One of Broadway’s biggest stars, she earned an unprecedented three Tony Awards before the age of 30 and a fourth in 2004. For the first time ever, Indigo Girls with Virginia Symphony, this Grammy-winning folk duo are pairing their open-hearted songs with lush arrangements for orchestra—and for fans, the experience is amazing! Rediscover “two of the most mutually simpatico voices in folk-pop” (Seattle Times)! Join the Festival for the Virginia Chocolate Festival. It is our celebration of chocolate in every form, gathered under one roof for your delicious, decadent delight. Enjoy chocolate samplings and sales, cooking demonstrations, entertainment, chocolate beer, wine tastings, and m-m-m-more….Or join us for the Virginia Beer Festival where you can sample a bounty of brews from around the world, while enjoying live music and the spring air! There are so many reasons to visit Norfolk in Coastal Virginia, so make your travel plans today! For more information about the Virginia Arts Festival, visit www.vafest.org, or call (757) 282-2800.

Dining & Nightlife

W

THROUGHOUT NORFOLK

hether you’re looking for a family-friendly meal, a romantic night out, a culinary tour of restaurants or a place to meet up with friends, Norfolk has something for everyone— and every appetite.

Norfolk has maintained its reputation as a popular culinary destination. The city’s culinary tours highlight local seafood specialties, award winning chef’s signature dishes, and tapas created with locally sourced ingredients. Throughout the city, international cuisine abounds – mouth-watering menu items ranging from Cuban, Mexican, and Spanish to Thai, Chinese, and Japanese. Other options include the always-popular Irish pubs, authentic Indian flavors, and everything from upscale Italian dining to hip pizza joints. Many restaurants stay true to the area by using some of our region’s finest ingredients, not only tapping into some of our most valuable resources, but also helping to boost the local economy and reduce its carbon footprint. Local eateries serve up everything from fish, scallops, mussels, and, of course, the Bay’s star crustacean, blue crabs. While seafood from the Chesapeake Bay is plentiful, local restaurants take advantage of the resources on land too, such as produce from sustainable farms throughout Coastal Virginia and along the Eastern Shore. Depending on the season, many menus will change to reflect the current crop of choice, from fall’s bounty of apples and pumpkin to summer’s sweet harvest of strawberries, cherries, blueberries, and blackberries. It’s worth a visit each season – just to see what new timely tastes are on the table. So where to go to satisfy your taste buds? Downtown Granby Street’s “restaurant row” offers to satisfy your hunger with a full spectrum of culinary experiences. Dine alfresco on Colley Avenue in historic Ghent, where the sidewalks are lined with restaurants, hip bars, and cafés, offering unique dishes with many vegan- and

Dining vegetarian-friendly options. Try house-smoked meat, fair trade organic coffee, and authentic French cuisine in the historic Freemason district. Plenty of family-friendly dining options dot the Military Highway area of Norfolk, offering reasonable prices and classic dishes. Down the road in Ocean View, you’ll find some of the locals’ favorite spots for succulent seafood fresh from the bay with a spectacular water view. When you’ve had your fill of food and are ready to dance it off, hit up some of the popular hangouts along Granby Street. The downtown area becomes a buzz of activity after dark; catch a live show at the Jewish Mother Backstage or get your groove on at Granby Theatre with late-diners and the “in-crowd” dancing the night away. Everyone will enjoy the cosmopolitan atmosphere of downtown. Don’t forget to check out the NorVa, a performing venue on Monticello Avenue that brings in some of the nation’s top bands. From roaring sports bars to laid back pubs to posh lounges, Norfolk’s nightlife caters to all types of party-goers. If an evening of arts and culture is what you’re looking for, you might want to have an early dinner and then catch a live performance at one of the city’s performing arts venues. Choose from live theatre, opera, and dance – or catch a foreign film at Ghent’s Naro Arts Cinema. (See page 46 for the full listings).
