The Heart of the Virginia WaterfrontSM

N

estled where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, Norfolk is regarded as the cultural, financial and entertainment heart of the Virginia waterfront. Vibrantly alive and bursting with opportunities for recreation, dining and entertainment, Norfolk offers its guests adventure all day long and into the night.

Did you know... Norfolk has a rich history spanning more than 400 years? It all began when John Smith and his crew cruised past this area looking for a landing point, eventually ending up in Jamestown. With its proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Norfolk has always been a vital center of commerce and industry, as well as a strategic military location. The area was right in the thick of several Revolutionary and Civil War battles: in 1776, two-thirds of the city was destroyed by the Royal Governor of Virginia, and a cannonball from the siege can still be viewed today lodged in the wall of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. What’s more, during the Civil War, the infamous battle between the ironclads Monitor and Merrimac was fought off these shores.

Begin your visit downtown and enjoy the energy and culture of this thriving city by the sea. Enjoy a visit to Granby Street, one of the city’s bustling mainstreets, with its upscale shopping and dining offerings. Then head straight to the waterfront to take a leisurely stroll along the brick pathways through Town Point Park, located adjacent to the Waterside Festival Marketplace and the Half Moone Cruise & Celebration Center. With its rich river view landscapes, the park is a lovely green space of peace and tranquility in an urban setting. On select weekends, Town Point Park plays host to a variety of premier festivals and events, including the annual Norfolk HarborfestŽ and tall ships Parade of Sail into the Norfolk Harbor as well as the bi-annual wine festival. The park’s permanent outdoor main stage, with its state-of-the-art acoustics, draws music lovers from across the region to hear a variety of planned musical entertainment. To the right of the park is Nauticus, a maritime-themed science center and home to the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, presenting centuries of naval history. Don’t miss a tour of the Battleship Wisconsin berthed at the complex. For those who love to be immersed in history, continue down the brick walkway along the waterfront to the historic Freemason district. The cobblestone streets and grand old homes offer a view into a by-gone era. Be sure to visit the historic Hunter House Victorian Museum located on Freemason Street. Wisconsin

erthed at Nauticus, the Battleship Wisconsin (BB64) is one of four Iowa-class battleships – the largest and last battleship ever built by the U.S. Navy. On December 14, 2009, she was donated to the City of Norfolk for permanent use as a museum ship. In 2012, the Battleship Wisconsin was listed in the Virginia Landmark Register. The ship is 887 feet long and weighs 45,000 tons; it was, literally, a “City at Sea with a crew of nearly 3,000 men during her heyday in WWII and now visitors can experience and explore it firsthand.

Since assuming official stewardship, Nauticus has begun opening previously sealed off interior spaces of the battleship for the public to explore. Visitors can start “walking the decks of history inside Nauticus with a six-minute introductory film, Forward for Freedom, which brings the Wisconsin to life through the stories and commentary of those who served aboard. On board the ship, an exhibit located at the entrance to the Wardroom, For All Those in Uniform Who Have Served, pays tribute to the armed forces, with an initial focus on Senator John W. Warner, who was instrumental in bringing the Battleship Wisconsin to Norfolk. Walk onto the Wisconsin’s teak decks, explore her from bow to stern, and step into the ship’s Wardroom on self-guided tour. For an additional fee, guided tours are offered periodically throughout the day that take visitors deeper into the ship’s lower and upper decks, including the combat engagement center, navigation Naval Station Norfolk is the largest naval complex bridge, captain’s cabin, crew’s mess, galley, barber shop, ship store, and much more. The

Mermaid Parade The Story Behind Norfolk’s Public Art Project Posing gracefully at street corners and storefronts, decorating banners and signs, and showing up in local art shops and galleries are Norfolk’s cultural icon, the mermaid. Today, the mermaid symbol is synonymous with civic pride, and it exemplifies Norfolk’s appreciation of the local arts community, its dedication to the arts and maintaining Norfolk’s rapid pace of growth, economically, and culturally. Mermaid statues began dotting downtown in 2000, shortly after the city branded the image of a young, free-spirited mermaid as its official city symbol as part of the “Life, Celebrated Daily campaign. The city had been undergoing major revitalization efforts, and the mermaid drove home the idea a “New Norfolk was being born. “We had some issues with the perception of Norfolk, both by those outside and inside, says Bob Batcher, the city’s Director of Communications. “We needed a new brand. In November 1999, attorney and well-known Norfolk advocate Peter Decker, Jr. introduced the idea of mermaid statues at a meeting with hundreds of business and civic leaders at Nauticus. Decker accredited his wife, Bess, with the Mermaids on Parade idea—she was inspired by the Cows on Parade in Chicago after a recent trip. Starting in the summer of 2000, the street corners, parks, and storefronts of

Norfolk began filling with mermaids. Business and civic leaders jumped at the opportunity to have their own mermaids. “We just sort of let it go and the public embraced it, says Batcher. The mermaids are all designed and decorated by local artists, and many of them represent a theme related to their location. There are now mermaid trails, books, jewelry, sculptures, art—anything you can think of, the mermaids have inspired. “The mermaids have really touched lives in a variety of ways, says Batcher. “And they really show the value of public art. To learn more about Norfolk’s mermaids and to download a mermaid walking tour map, visit www.mermaidsonparade.com.
