The Tide light rail system is now operating, and offers our visitors an affordable, easy way to see Norfolk. Be sure to hop on The Tide during your stay and catch a game at Harbor Park, explore historical sites and visit attractions and restaurants. Most people do not realize that Norfolk has 144 miles of shoreline and is surrounded by rivers and the Chesapeake Bay, which meets the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors will soon learn that Norfolk offers both the excitement of a downtown and a whole host of water and outdoor activities — you can learn to sail, kayak, hike or golf only minutes from downtown! Along the Elizabeth River, you will find the gorgeous Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, as well as Town Point Park, the science maritime museum Nauticus and the Battleship Wisconsin. Docked near Town Point Park are the topsail schooner American Rover, Victory Rover and other boats ready to take you on leisurely tour of our harbor. If you prefer exploring Norfolk on land, take a walking tour or rent a Segway and take a ride through downtown, by the waterfront, past the Chrysler Museum of Art and through the historic Freemason 10/31/11 11:07:52 AM and Ghent dART_Norfolk_VG_Ad_2012.pdf districts.

Mayor’s Note

Welcome

to Norfolk

On behalf of the citizens of Norfolk, welcome to our community. Whether you are here for business or pleasure, I hope you will enjoy your stay in our proud and historic seaport city. We look forward to sharing our hospitality with you. You are invited to take advantage of the many opportunities our downtown offers for shopping, dining and entertainment — there is something for everyone. MacArthur Center Mall, with more than 140 stores anchored by Nordstrom and Dillard’s department stores, is an easy walk from downtown hotels as is The Waterside Festival Marketplace, Nauticus (The National Maritime Center), the Battleship Wisconsin, the General Douglas MacArthur Memorial, the Armed Forces Memorial and the many restaurants along Granby Street. As one of the nation’s oldest cities, Norfolk has a long and rich history that awaits you on the Cannonball Trail, our downtown walking tour. Along the way you will discover three buildings designed by Thomas U. Walter, architect of the U.S. Capitol dome, as well as historic homes and other notable architectural and historic landmarks. If you are interested in the arts, you’re in luck. Norfolk has an impressive offering with the Chrysler Museum of Art — one of the top

20 art museums in the country — the Virginia Opera, the Virginia Symphony, the Virginia Stage Company and the Virginia Ballet. For family fun, make time to visit the Virginia Zoo with its impressive display of animals and the Zoo Train that takes visitors on a narrated tour through the Zoo grounds. And, try to stop by the 155-acre Norfolk Botanical Garden, a beautiful and serene oasis in the middle of the city. While Norfolk embodies the cultural and commercial advantages of a big city, visitors are enchanted by our town’s intimate charm, historic past and friendly atmosphere. We are glad you are here, so please enjoy yourself and enjoy Norfolk, a place where life is celebrated daily. Sincerely, Paul D. Fraim, Mayor

A group of more than 200 African-American women and 20 African-American men were assigned to clear 30 acres of dense, native vegetation. The workers then planted 4,000 azaleas, several thousand shrubs and trees, and 100 bushels of daffodils. Throughout the years, the Garden continued to grow and expand — adding a Japanese Garden, Colonial Garden, Rose Garden — which has sprouted All-American Rose Selection winners, a stunning butterfly garden and butterfly house, and many others. Today, both themed and signature gardens offer breathtaking views in every season. he Battleship Wisconsin is one of the largest non-carrier warships built by the United States. The battleship, launched in April of 1944, is 887 feet long and weighs 45,000 tons. The “Wisky,” affectionately called by some, served in World War II (in Tokyo Bay for surrender), the Korean War (Inchon Landing) and the first Gulf War (Desert Storm). The ship has housed a crew of more than 3,000 during WWII/Korea, and 2,000 for the Gulf War. In 2001 (on its launch anniversary), the ship opened to the general public, and in December of 2009 it was donated to the City of Norfolk. Nauticus recently opened previously sealed off interior spaces of the battleship to the public. A six minute dramatic film, Forward for Freedom, shown inside a new introductory theater, brings the Wisconsin to life through the stories and commentary of those who served aboard her. An exhibit located at the entrance to the Wardroom, For All Those in Uniform Who Have Served, pays tribute to the armed forces, with an initial focus on Senator John W. Warner, who was instrumental in bringing the battleship Wisconsin to Norfolk. Both the film and exhibit, as well as the Wardroom and Officers’ Quarters, are included in regular museum admission. For an additional fee, guided Topside Tours, offered periodically throughout the day, take visitors deeper into the ship. Each tour includes the administration area, radio room, main deck enlisted berthing, captain’s cabin and sleeping quarters, flag bridge and combat engagement center. The Battleship Wisconsin is located beside Nauticus at One Waterside Drive in downtown Norfolk. The Battleship is open Memorial Day through Labor Day daily 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The remainder of the year, the Battleship is open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday noon – 5 p.m. The Battleship closes 15 minutes prior to noted closing times. NEIGHBORHOODS

A Look Into Notable

Norfolk Neighborhoods

GHENT

Historic Ghent was long ago considered rural country as it was only a plot of farmland far from downtown Norfolk. During the early 1900’s, stately homes were built along the tree-lined Hague canal making it the fashionable place to live through the first half of the century. Through the 60’s and 70’s students, writers and musicians crowded Ghent, the ultimate artists’ haven. Fast-forward to 2012. The main thoroughfare, Colley Avenue, and adjacent 21st and 22nd Streets are still a hub of activity, offering eclectic eateries, unique shops, art galleries, and antique stores. The Naro Extended Arts Cinema, on Colley Avenue, screens foreign and independent films. Doumar’s Cones and BBQ, an old-fashioned drive-in, whose owner created the world’s first ice cream cone machine, is located just a few blocks from the main drag. Just this year Ghent’s first gastropub, “The Public House,” opened on Colley Avenue and Princess Anne Road.

HISTORIC FREEMASON

The cobblestone streets and grand old homes of Norfolk’s historic Freemason District offer a view into a bygone era. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Historic Freemason is located along the Elizabeth River just down the brick pathway from Town Point Park, Nauticus and the Battleship Wisconsin. According to the historical marker, which can be found on West Freemason Street near Duke Street, it was first settled in 1686, when “one hundred acres of land in this vicinity were granted to the Elizabeth River Parish for a glebe.” It is the city’s only neighborhood which accurately depicts a visual chronology of architectural styles over three centuries. Today, Freemason has a growing collection of assorted restaurants, antique shops and boutiques. Freemason Abbey Restaurant, housed in a 136 year-old church, has been a local’s favorite for almost 20 years. Other landmarks include Serendip, a shop full of fine furnishings, art and antiques, and the Pagoda Tea

House and Restaurant, complete with the largest Koi pond on the east coast, a gift to Norfolk from the Taiwan Provincial Government. New to the neighborhood are Cure Brasserie & Coffee House and Shady Grove Marketplace.

OCEAN VIEW

Norfolk’s Chesapeake Bay shoreline community, Ocean View has undergone major re-gentrification over the past several years, after decades of decay. Today, the area is sprouting million dollar homes, gated communities and waterfront golf courses. Miles of quiet beachfront welcome visitors for a day of sunbathing, and the famous Ocean View Pier is not to be missed, Ocean View is bordered on one side by Willoughby Spit and on the other by Norfolk Amphibious Base Little Creek.

MILITARY HIGHWAY

Military Highway is a noted business, retail and residential area of Norfolk including the JANAF Shopping Yard at the intersection of Virginia Beach Boulevard, The Gallery at Military Circle (Norfolk’s first indoor shopping mall), and other large national retail chains. An easy and quick drive from downtown Norfolk, visitors will also find a variety of restaurants including Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Italian, Indian and Mongolian BBQ cuisine.

2012

he Virginia Arts Festival, in its 16th season, presents an unprecedented collection of cultural artistry. In one of just a few U.S. recital appearances this season, the world’s reigning soprano opens the Virginia Arts Festival, on April 16th. Beloved as “the people’s diva,” Renée Fleming captivates audiences with her sumptuous voice, consummate artistry, and compelling stage presence. Recognized as one of the great dance companies in the world, American Ballet Theatre (ABT) is famed for the artistry of its dancers and the scope of its repertoire. In its first engagement with the Festival, ABT will perform one of the most beloved ballets of all time: Giselle. The Virginia International Tattoo, in its 16th season, stands alone as one of the nation’s most celebrated displays of pageantry, emphasizing the strong connection between our military and international friends. This year, audiences will Itzhak Perlman experience a grand spectacle of more than 850 performers from around the world, including military and nonmilitary bands, drill teams, bagpipes, dancers, and more, all creating a musical and visual experience that will exceed all expectations. Returning for its second year, the Tattoo Hullabaloo will transform Scope Plaza into a delightful frenzy of dancers and musicians two hours prior to each performance. The Screwtape Letters, the critically acclaimed staging of C. S. Lewis’ mordantly funny treatise on the making of a sinner, is set in an eerily stylish office in hell and follows the clever scheming of Satan’s chief psychiatrist, Screwtape, as he entices a human “patient” toward damnation. Back by popular demand, Flying PROMS, A Symphonic Airshow Spectacular, enables audiences to experience the British tradition of vintage aircraft flying through the sky accompanied by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Audiences can enjoy a wide selection of food from local vendors, picnic on the grass, or tour the museum for an afternoon packed full of fun, music, and memories. Experience this soaring, symphonic celebration on the grounds of Virginia Beach’s Military Aviation Museum. The name, Gallim, means “waves” in Hebrew, and the image remains in the mind as you experience Gallim Dance’s deeply affecting performances: waves of movement across the stage, waves of emotion, art that makes waves by its very existence. Each festival season introduces audiences to an eclectic mix of highly acclaimed artists from around the world. This year, the Festival is pleased to welcome postmodern diva phenom Meow Meow, Bela Fleck and the Original Flecktones, Dougie MacLean and Igudesman and Joo—A Little Nightmare Music. Ana Vidovic From Classical to Rock, the Festival has it all. Itzhak Perlman and the Perlman Music Program — Hear “the preeminent violinist of our day” (Chicago Tribune) as he performs with young musicians of rare and special talent from his renowned Perlman Music Program and discover the next generation of stars! Celebrate one of the most influential bands in rock history — The Music of Pink Floyd — in this flawless recreation — complete with orchestra, spectacular light show with lasers and fog. A dream weekend in one of America’s most charming historic settings, Festival Williamsburg, includes a weekend filled with big band music of Harlem Renaissance Orchestra, and A Broadway Spotlight — on stage in the Virginia Room at the Williamsburg Lodge. Abiding by the Festival’s goal of presenting world-class performances, the 2012 season will include one of the largest-scale choral works ever produced: Mahler’s Eighth Symphony. Dubbed the “Symphony of a Thousand,” the work is rarely performed because of the vast musical resources required. Each spring the Virginia Arts Festival offers a diverse season of world-renowned artists, commissioned works, extraordinary collaborations, and unforgettable performances of exciting music, dance, and theater. For more information about the Virginia Arts Festival, visit www.vafest.org, or call (757) 282-2800.

Dining & Nightlife

THROUGHOUT NORFOLK

N

orfolk has recently emerged as a sizzling culinary destination. The city’s new culinary tours highlight everything from traditional Southern fare to a wide range of international offerings — many of which are whipped up by award-winning chefs. Whether you’re in the mood for gourmet elegance or a casual, down-home atmosphere, Norfolk has something for everyone — and every appetite! Throughout the city, international cuisine abounds — mouth-watering menu items ranging from Cuban, Brazilian, Mexican and Spanish to Thai, Chinese and Japanese. Other options include the always-popular Irish pubs, authentic Indian flavors, and everything from upscale Italian dining to hip pizza joints. While global noshing is the local’s choice, many restaurants stay true to the area by peppering their plates with some of our region’s finest ingredients, not only tapping into some of our most valuable resources, but also helping to boost the local economy and reduce its carbon footprint. Local eateries serve up everything from fish, scallops, mussels, and, of course, the Bay’s star crustacean, blue crabs. While seafood from the Chesapeake Bay is plentiful, local restaurants take advantage of the resources on land too, such as produce from sustainable farms throughout Coastal Virginia and along the Eastern Shore. Depending on the season, many menus will change to reflect the current crop of choice, from fall’s bounty of apples and pumpkin to summer’s sweet harvest of strawberries, cherries, blueberries and blackberries. It’s worth a visit each season — just to see what new timely tastes are on the table. So where to go to satisfy your taste buds? Downtown Granby Street’s “restaurant row” offers to satisfy your hunger with a full spectrum of culinary experiences. Away from downtown, even more dining opportunities await! Dine alfresco on Colley Avenue in Ghent, where the sidewalks are lined with restaurants, hip bars and cafes, offering unique dishes with many vegan — and vegetarianfriendly options. A short drive away, Military Highway is dappled with familyfriendly dining options, offering up reasonable prices and classic dishes. Down the road in Ocean View, you’ll find some of the locals’ favorite spots for succulent seafood fresh from the bay with a spectacular water view coupled with a quiet atmosphere that’s hard to find anywhere else. When you’ve had your fill of food and are ready to dance it off, many of the same restaurants offering wonderful cuisine transform into popular hangouts at night, with drink specials, late night menus and specialty cocktails. Granby Street becomes a buzz of activity after dark; catch a live show at the Jewish Mother or get your groove on at Granby Theater with late-diners and the “in-crowd” dancing the night away, all enjoying the cosmopolitan atmosphere of downtown. From roaring sports bars to laid back pubs to posh lounges, Norfolk’s nightlife caters to all types of party-goers. If an evening of arts and culture is what you’re looking for, you might want to have an early dinner and then catch a live performance at one of the city’s performing arts venues. Choose from live theatre, the opera, and dance — or catch a foreign film at Ghent’s Naro Arts Cinema. Norfolk is also known for its eclectic music scene, and a variety of live music can be found any night of the week. FULL DINING LISTINGS CONTINUED ON PAGE 42...

The

Mermaid Parade

P

The Story Behind Norfolk’s Public Art Project

osing gracefully at street corners and storefronts, decorating banners and signs, and showing up in local art shops and galleries is Norfolk’s cultural icon, the mermaid. Today, the mermaid symbol is synonymous with civic pride, and it exemplifies Norfolk’s appreciation of the local arts community, its dedication to nurturing the arts and maintaining Norfolk’s rapid pace of growth, economically and culturally. Mermaid statues began dotting downtown in 2000, shortly after the city branded the image of a young, freespirited mermaid as its official city symbol as part of the “Life. Celebrated Daily” campaign. The city had been undergoing major revitalization efforts and the mermaid drove home the idea a new Norfolk was being born. “We had some issues with the perception of Norfolk, both by those outside and inside,” says Bob Batcher, the city’s manager of public relations. “We needed a new brand.” In November 1999, attorney and well-known Norfolk advocate Peter Decker, Jr. introduced the idea of mermaid statues at a meeting with hundreds of business and civic leaders at Nauticus. Decker accredited his wife, Bess, with the Mermaids on Parade idea—she was inspired by the Cows on Parade in Chicago after a recent trip. Starting in the summer of 2000, the street corners, parks and storefronts of Norfolk began filling with mermaids. Business and civic leaders jumped at the opportunity to have their own mermaids, and come fall, there were more than 130 on display. “We just sort of let it go and the public embraced it,” says Batcher. The mermaids are all designed and decorated by local artists, and many of them represent a theme related to their location. There are now mermaid trails, books, jewelry, sculptures, art—anything you can think of, the mermaids have inspired. Most proceeds from the sale of mermaids and their offspring benefit local arts organizations. “The mermaids have really touched lives in a variety of ways,” says Batcher. “And they really show the value of public art.” To learn more about Norfolk’s mermaids and to download a mermaid walking tour map, visit www.mermaidsonparade.com.
