Gemstones have fascinated and captivated human beings throughout history for their bright colors, sparkling surfaces, and other beautiful qualities. In addition to being prized for their rarity, many gemstones also found a place in mythology, and were assigned mystical qualities by ancient humans.


For centuries, peridot has been believed to remove feelings of stress, fear, and guilt. Among Native Hawaiians, peridot is associated with the goddess of fire Pele, and is even said to be formed from Pele’s tears.


Amethyst is the birthstone for the Zodiac sign Pisces, and has a long history of association with royalty for its purple color. The ancient Greeks believed that the stone could help people overcome addictive behavior. This is reflected in the stone’s name, which comes from the Greek word “amethystos,” or “sober.”


Topaz has a rich mythological history on several continents. The Greeks believed it increased strength and could make the wearer invisible. In the Middle Ages, it was believed the stone could heal sickness. And among some African tribesmen, the stone is used in rituals to communicate with ancestral spirits.


Tourmaline comes in a range of colors, from black and blue to green and pink. To explain this variety of shades, ancient people said that tourmaline gained its many colors by traveling across a rainbow. The stone was also believed to inspire creativity, and to strengthen the body and spirit.


Aquamarine has long been associated with good luck and happiness. This comes from ancient Greece, when it was believed that the stone was sacred to the sea god Poseidon and his mermaids. Legend says the first of these stones was found by sailors in a mermaid’s treasure chest, and that it gives good luck to those who travel the seas.


In addition to being associated with the Zodiac sign Virgo, citrine is believed by spiritual healers to cure diseases of the heart, liver, kidneys, digestive tract, and muscles. It’s also believed to reduce destructive tendencies and promote creativity.


Also called “cinnamon stone,� Indian mythology states hessonite comes from the fingernails of the god Vala. Legend also says that this stone has the power to cure feelings of inferiority and negativity in people who wear it.
