FOCUS ON THE UNIQUE EXPERTISE OF BREGUET’S ARTISANS

To create each Breguet timepiece requires the combined work of some thirty or so specialized artisans, representing all the Manufacture’s centuries-old expertise. For the watchmaker, despite his central role in the production process, is not the only artisan to take part in creating a new watch. Today Breguet points the spotlight on a range of craftsmen and decorators who frequently go almost unnoticed but who contribute to fashioning timepieces of the most exceptional beauty.

7

Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers Magazine

ack in the 18th century, Abraham-Louis Breguet already attached particular importance to the decoration of his creations. The famous watchmaker’s timepieces all exhibit different motifs that enhance the beauty not only of their movements, but also of their cases and dials. The motivation for this meticulous artistic endeavor is nevertheless primarily functional. The decorating of watches can often prevent them from becoming prematurely tarnished, and helps overcome the fragility of matt or polished surfaces that can only too easily be scratched, grazed or otherwise damaged in a variety of ways. This tendency has evolved over time: today aesthetic considerations take precedent over the practical reasons at the origin of watch decoration. In addition to their technical skills, Breguet artisans, whether they are bevellers, engravers or engineturners, nowadays thus lend their skills to the service of beauty, while at the same time perpetuating an ancestral expertise worthy of the greatest watchmakers of all time.

B

Among these finishing techniques based on rare skills transmitted from generation to generation, beveling is characterized by its complexity. Serving to polish and round off the edges of the component parts of watch movements, beveling performs a double function. At a practical level, it removes imperfections and traces of machining that could hamper the efficiency and accuracy of the watch movement. Its role is above all aesthetic, however, thanks to the subtle interplay of reflections between satin-

finished surfaces and sharply-cut polished angles. Each surface of a timepiece is re-worked, embellished and painstakingly burnished with a range of tools and abrasive materials that seem to have survived from a previous age. The angles finally obtained have either sharp external edges or narrow internal ones; their edges are straight, curved or rounded-off. Thus enhanced, the watch movement is a hymn to the authenticity of Breguet’s watchmaking expertise. Engraving is, for its part, a fully-fledged decorative art in its own right. With the aid of a range of tools that he has patiently prepared, the artisan carves the finest of materials by hand. The slightest error or trembling of the hand can reduce several days’ work to nothing in a split second. The decorative effects thus obtained give Breguet timepieces an unrivaled refinement and unique identity that makes them immediately recognizable. A form of raised engraving, the technique of engine-turning by hand has been particularly prized by master watchmakers since its first appearance in the 16th century. Originally used to enhance the beauty of watch cases, Abraham-Louis Breguet began to use engine-turning to fashion the dials. Veritable works of art, Breguet dials epitomize a spirit of infinite patience applied in the service of an impressive mastery of technique. The dials are made by hand in accordance with ancestral working methods, and exactly how the delicate details are achieved remains a jealously-guarded production secret even today. Worked in the traditional style on a lathe (in the case of the circular motifs) or in a straight line on a machine (for linear patterns), engine-turning

is unquestionably one of the identifying features of a Breguet timepiece. The initially smooth dial disc made of 18-carat gold or mother-of-pearl is first worked with a graver. The “borders” thus obtained highlight the different zones that will show the various time displays (the power reserve, moon phase indicator, small seconds, date window, etc.). The dial is then ready to be decorated, which will give it a delicately textured, non-reflecting matt surface, and will also mark out the zones with a variety of motifs – clous de Paris, flinqué, grain d’orge, wave or basketwork designs, etc. Constantly seeking to innovate, but at the same time keen to perpetuate the traditional crafts of its pastimes, Breguet also collaborates with the very best masters of cameo carving. A form of bas-relief engraving with a history of over 4,000 years behind it, cameowork is one of the most remarkable forms of craftsmanship in the world. It is practiced using shells that present strata of contrasting colors. Using a graver that he has himself created, the artisan works the interior layers of the shells that are only a few millimeters thick, producing a sculpture of exceptional delicacy. The selection of the shells (subjected to ethical principles that respect the marine fauna) is an essential stage in the art of cameo-work. Master cameo engravers work only the noblest shells that feature the most refined tones. Once the material has been decided, the artisan proceeds to cut into the shell in its flattest part. Each piece is then carefully carved and filed so as to obtain perfectly rounded forms. The craftsman then traces in pencil the outline of his future creation. Now the engraving can begin! This is the most delicate and artistic stage of the creative process, which enables the cameo, once it has been cleaned and polished, finally to reveal itself in all its splendor.

CELEBRATING THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST WRISTWATCH On 21 December 1812, Abraham-Louis Breguet put the finishing touches to an extraordinary timepiece, commissioned from him in 1810 by a woman of equally remarkable character, Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples. A fervent admirer of Breguet watch creations, Napoleon Bonaparte’s younger sister was in the habit of making regular purchases from her favorite watchmaker. In fact she ordered a total of no less than 34 watches and clocks from A.-L. Breguet, including the first ever wristwatch in the history of horology. As a tribute to this, the most innovative timepiece of its day, and in memory of the woman who commissioned it, in 2002 Montres Breguet launched an exclusively feminine collection that took its inspiration from the original watch first ordered by the Queen of Naples, and officially recorded as Watch No. 2639.

I first walked into Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers many years ago. My grandmother had just handed down a few of her favorite pieces of jewelry to me and some of them were in need of repair. I have to confess that I sometimes find jewelry stores a bit intimidating, but I wanted to find a local jeweler with whom I could feel at ease. Faina and Edward Shapiro forever changed my perception of what a jewelry store can and should be. As owners of Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers, they make each customer feel like a guest in their home their gleaming, elegant store located in the heart of Bernardsville. It is equally inviting to the casual window shopper and the serious customer alike. Everyone who passes through their door is greeted with a warm smile and friendly “Hello”. The intimacy Faina and Edward have created is more than a testament to their commitment to their business; it is a reflection of their commitment to each other. The two are no strangers to the world of fine jewelry. They have spent 27 years building a very strong business and a loyal clientele that is found throughout New Jersey and even beyond its borders. Those who have shopped here remember first-rate service almost more than the stunning pieces that Faina and Edward carry. It is customer loyalty that has yielded real relationships and Faina and Edward’s inclusion in some of the special moments and milestones of their customers’ lives. It is, in their words, “The part of the job we love most.” This September, Faina and Edward celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary, marking a quarter century of building not only a business but a life together. They are two people who exemplify a true partnership and possess a deeper bond, the kind that can’t easily be explained by couples who have it.

Both Faina and Edward came to the United States in their youth, immigrating with their families - he from Kiev, Ukraine, landing in Minnesota; she from Minsk, Belarus, making Brooklyn home. Like many immigrants, they quickly settled in, learned the language, and got to work. In 1983, Edward moved to New York City to begin an apprenticeship in a jewelry factory, later became one of their established gem setters. Not long after he started, the factory owner recognized Edward’s potential as well as his strong work ethic and offered him a partnership in a retail venture. All of a sudden, he was an entrepreneur, which suited him just fine, as Edward had always wanted his own business. It was the start of what would become a successful journey into fine jewelry. At the age of 25, he got what he wanted and Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers was born.

Faina was a fresh-faced 20-year-old living in New York City. After earning her degree in Accounting from Brooklyn College, she worked as an underwriter at an insurance company. The couple met on a blind date, arranged by the girlfriend of Edward’s roommate. The friend decided to set them up after overhearing a telephone conversation between Edward and his mother, in which he spoke with great respect to her. The friend was familiar with Faina’s values and thought the two would be a great match. After a successful introduction, the couple continued to see each other regularly; both had a demanding schedule that often meant working 12-hour shifts, seven days a week. “We only had Sunday nights free and realized that that would be our date night; the rest of the time we stayed on the phone sometimes for hours,” Edward remembers. He admired Faina’s desire to learn and explore her determination to be ahead of the pack. “The more I got to know her, the more I saw what Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers Magazine

When it came to their engagement, Edward took a different approach than most. As a jeweler, he thought simply giving Faina a diamond - just the stone - instead of a ring would be a lovely gesture. “So she could choose the right design for her ring,” he tells. Little did he know that she would change the setting three times. On September 6, 1987, Edward and Faina were married at the Huntington Town House in Long Island in front of their closest family and friends.

As they became established in their community and grew their business, Faina and Edward also grew their family, becoming parents to two daughters, Sasha and Tess.

was there,” says Edward. “She wanted to travel and experience different cultures, and so did I,” he goes on. Faina agrees that there was compatibility from the get - go, in terms of their commonality, their goals, and their aspirations. “From the start, it was clear that we shared the same old-world values.” Soon the couple was spending every weekend together. The relationship was growing and they knew the next steps were engagement, a house, and marriage.

Sasha, 23, who works in public relations, says her parents constantly push her and her sister in as many directions as possible. “They work so hard to give us everything they never had as kids and always motivate us to do more and get ahead in life. Most importantly though, they love us unconditionally.” Tess, 20, a business student at Ithaca College, jokes that her favorite part about being their daughter is, “Knowing one day I will have the most beautiful engagement ring!” Pensively, she adds that her parents have introduced them to more cultural experiences than they can count. “We have travelled to different countries, tasted new cuisines, and learned firsthand how to appreciate fine art,” she tells of her parents’ zest for life.

“For over 25 years, we have been custom creating jewelry. Each piece reflects the unique personality of the person we are designing for. These rings, meticulously hand crafted in platinum with diamonds are our latest creations. Stop in and talk to us about creating you next family heirloom.” –Edward & Faina Shapiro

“Faina has impeccable taste,” explains Edward. “Her sense of fashion and style, combined with my manufacturing knowledge, allows me to make sure that what she picks out is also made well. It is a combination that works for us.” Faina concurs that the two have much in common, not only in their backgrounds but in their drive. “We have a shared desire to achieve more and a mutual respect for one another.” Both recognize that it was the talents they had nurtured in their youth - his creativity, her business savvy- that formed the foundation for their long and successful partnership, both personal and professional. The couple teases that they should be credited with being married for 48 years, if you combine 23 years of working together with 25 years of marriage. They truly feel that one complements the other.

Faina and Edward continued to grow their business even further, expanding the company to a total of five additional Diamond Dream Fine Jewelry stores between 1992 and 2004 (including their present location). For more than a decade, the stores thrived. The couple was able to add staff and deliver unique pieces to the delight of customers. One of the many friendships that blossomed started when Mrs. Irene Evans, one of their original customers from their first store in the American Way Mall, bought a piece of jewelry from Edward. Mrs. Evans daughter, Tracy Scillia, remains a loyal customer. “To this day, I still wear the aquamarine ring that my mom bought from Edward,” Tracy shares. “What I love about Edward is that he loves ‘to create’. I am blessed to have many beautiful pieces from him.” Over time, Faina and Edward realized that with so many locations, they were losing the personal connections they so greatly cherished. This revelation led them to scale back. They would focus solely on their location in Bernardsville. Doing so enabled them to establish a relationship of trust, one customer at a time.

15

Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers Magazine

Tess observes the same: “They have a great yin and yang to their relationship. My mother is very quantitative and takes care of all the bills. My father, on the other hand, is very artistic and loves to design as well as cook. They still teach each other things, even after 25 years of marriage!”

In 2009, Faina and Edward opened their new store on Mine Brook Road in the center of Bernardsville. The change in location gave them increased visibility, though they too have felt the strains of the economy. How have they coped? As they always have: By working harder. “We are always challenging ourselves to do more,” notes Edward. “If you stay in the same place, you cannot make progress.” “I have seen their struggles and successes as they have reached for the ‘American Dream,’” shares Sasha. “If you tried to tell me about two people that work harder than my parents, I wouldn’t believe you. They put everything into this store and even after all this time, they still wake up excited to go to work.”

Tess agrees, adding, “It is truly amazing what my parents have done since moving to America. My sister and I are so lucky they created this business; it’s one we’ll be able to continue to expand in the future.” To keep on the cutting edge in the world of fine jewelry, Faina and Edward attend numerous trade shows each year. They regularly work with designers - both those they meet and those they carry in-house - to keep their merchandise fresh and ever-evolving. With their vast experience, it’s easy for them to recognize the finer things in life, which sets them apart from the competition. “To us, jewelry should be as unique and different as the person it reflects,” they both add, almost finishing each others sentence. Faina understands how the right piece can change one’s look in an instant. “Jewelry is a fashion accessory which can make an outfit. Yet, it also tells the story of your personality, mood, and stage of life. It can tell a lot about you.” With an impressive mix of Breguet, Breitling, Omega, and Baume & Mercier timepieces on display, Edward states that the fine watch business has “never been better.” He notes that a watch is a solid investment as well as one that’s frequently cherished and passed down through the generations. Like most business owners, Faina and Edward find that referrals are often the biggest compliment they can receive. “When our customers refer someone, it’s about trust. This is very

important to us,” says Edward. For both of them, Diamond Dream Fine Jewelers is more than just a retail establishment where goods are bought and sold: it’s an extension of the couple’s passion for life, jewelry, and love for each other. “Every Sunday you can find my parents having brunch at Raymond’s in Montclair, and most likely playing tennis or walking before that,” says Sasha. “They really enjoy spending every day together.” Their charitable activity is extensive. The couple supports numerous area schools, hospitals, and organizations in their fundraising and at benefits throughout the year. They find it rewarding as well as important to provide sponsorships for local events to stay in touch with the community. For the two, making a life together is a work in progress. They certainly understand the culture of their work lives and are able to manage their family life with just as much love and grace. They are the very picture of a couple that cherish one another and the life they have created together.

YANN ARTHUS-BERTRAND: PLANET OCEAN

Yann Arthus-Bertrand with OMEGA President Stephen Urquhart

A documentary, which also draws on the talents of some of the world’s leading aerial and underwater cinematographers, oceanographers and biologists, was created to change the way people look at the oceans and to encourage them to imagine conservation and stewardship as responsibilities shared by everyone on Earth. ann Arthus-Bertrand introduced the film to a capacity crowd at the OMEGA House and following the screening, took part in a discussion moderated by Zoey Bird. Stephen Urquhart, the President of OMEGA, talked about his brand’s long interest in underwater exploration and oceanic health and Arthus-Bertrand commended OMEGA’s commitment. He said, “It is a risk for a company to give money to an activist like me. But that’s what they did and not once did they ask to see what I was doing. They never told me what to do.”

Y

OMEGA’s President Urquhart: “No one could do it better” Stephen Urquhart said, “We offered this project to Yann because we knew that no one could do it better. He’s both an environmentalist and the world's leading specialist in aerial photography. He has a unique combination of skills that allowed him to capture and communicate the majesty and the beauty of the oceans cinematically. He, Michael and their team have done a remarkable job.”

OMEGA Seamaster OMEGA Introduced the first Seamaster in 1948. The line has achieved worldwide fame by combining inspired design and outstanding stability - perfect for serious underwater adventure

The film’s composer Armand Amar, who was at the screening, was asked about his inspiration for the moving soundtrack. He said that he had been inspired by the film footage, pointing out that the powerful imagery suggested the types of themes that were called for.

Reaching the widest possible audience When Arthus-Bertrand was asked if he thought that there was sufficient political will to address the global issue of oceanic health, he said that he hoped that Planet Ocean would raise public awareness, inspiring viewers to encourage politicians to consider legislation that would help protect the oceans. He announced that the film is being made available free of charge to interested schools and NGOs to ensure that it reaches the widest possible audience. Explaining some great natural mysteries Planet Ocean aims to explain some of the planet’s greatest natural mysteries in ways that make them understandable and accessible to everyone. Finally, it allows young people to imagine that a more sustainable world is not only desirable but achievable. The film combines the kind of breathtaking aerial shots that have made Arthus-Bertrand’s filmmaking reputation along with underwater imagery from an award-winning team of cameramen. OMEGA’s maritime legacy OMEGA has long been associated with the planet's oceans and concerned with their health and preservation. In 1932, it released the world's first divers' watch. By 1936, Dr. Charles William Beebe, the American naturalist and underwater explorer who was one of the inventors of the bathysphere, spoke enthusiastically about how well his OMEGA Marine had served him when he was working 14 meters beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean for extended periods of time.

Commander Yves Le Prieur, the father of the aqualung, was often photographed underwater wearing his own OMEGA Marine. Jacques-Yves Cousteau famously wore an OMEGA Ploprof and Jacques Mayol – the legendary free diver known as "The Dolphin Man" – wore an OMEGA Seamaster on his record-setting dives. When the late Sir Peter Blake, OMEGA's friend and brand ambassador, retired from competition as one of the world's most successful competitive sailors, he committed his energies to the protection of his beloved oceans. Sir Peter was motivated by a simple motto: "No water, no life." He created his nonprofit organization, Blakexpeditions, under the auspices of the United Nations and OMEGA.

The OMEGA SEAMASTER PLANET OCEAN collection

The watches in The OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean collection have been held in equally high regard for their professional divers' features, their style and their innovative Co-Axial technology since they were released in 2005. This year OMEGA is proud to be expanding the family.

Like every Planet Ocean, the new watches are ready for underwater adventure and are equipped with unidirectional rotating bezels, helium escape valves and water resistance to 60 bar / 600 metres /2000 feet. The applied indexes on the dials are coated with white Super-LumiNova emitting a blue light as are the polished, facetted rhodium-plated hands. The exception is the minute hand which emits a green light, as

does the dot on the diving bezel. This feature makes it easy for divers to keep track of their time at a glance. And as Seamaster Planet Ocean wristwatches, they are powered by OMEGA's exclusive Co-Axial calibres. Each one is equipped with a silicon balance spring and the combination is so stable and reliable that OMEGA offers all of the new Planet Ocean watches with a full four-year warranty.

he main design accomplishments of the Buccellati clan span four decades: from the 1920’s to the 1960’s. The most distinctive aspect of the design house pieces is their rich textural quality. As one jewelry historian put it, “Every bit of surface is worked and finished, whether visible or not, with many different engraving techniques." When the process is finished, the surface of a Buccellati piece often resembles a fine fabric: linen, tulle, lace. Piercing techniques recreate the look of honeycomb, lace, or webbing. Use of mixed metals (silver and gold, platinum and gold) is also typical. If gemstones are used at all, they are often unusual: large cabochons, carved emeralds and rubies, rose-cut diamonds. Naturalistic motifs are common fare. The pieces are bold and instantly recognizable as Buccellati.

ERATOCHRON collection Essential lines and a classic look describe the essence of the Eratochron, the newest addition to enrich Buccellati’s range of watches. It’s name means “desired” or lovely” and is the Muse of lyric poetry, particularly in the theme of love. She also has the fifth to live up the lust for love in everyone. The watch is very simple yet strikingly elegant. A rectangular case in gold that is entirely engraved holds the dial and is paired with a simple leather bracelet to balance the extravagance. The elegance of the dial comes untouched to the admirer’s sight with the winding mechanism hidden in the back of the case. With so many combinations of execution it renders the Eratochron a customizable watch: the dial can be in mother-of-pearl, engraved or technical; leather bracelets are available in different colors and variations; the case can be set with precious stones from one to three rows. No better saying than “less is more” describes the Eratochron watch. It is an example of how a simple and flowing design can fascinate and seduce. D

I believe that through art we have a voice and a message that needs to be heard....

18K midnight Fleur de Lis split shank cuff with Boulder opal, white diamonds & blue sapphire. $4,570

EMILY ARMENTA he underlying message that is intricately woven through out each Armenta collection is to challenge the status quo, embrace diversity, and embrace the struggle to make a difference. Change does not come easily and does not come without sacrifices.

T

I am inspired by other artists and great leaders, and their stories they tell through their art or the struggles that they have overcome. Therefore, many of the pieces are inspired by famous works of art found throughout Spain, such as poetry, paintings, architecture, and sculptures. Certain pieces are physical representations of images found in works of art, which is to pay homage to the artist’s message of inspiration. For me jewelry is about the creative process and the deeper meaning behind art. Designs often come to me at night or in a dream. Therefore, I believe that it should not be limited by one element, but rather explore all elements and create the unexpected. In search of my own Duende I discovered a window into the work of Spain’s most famous and important poet of the twentieth century, Federico García Lorca. I've been captivated by Lorca's idea of "duende".

DESIGNER SHOWCASE

Thus duende is a power and not a behavior; it is the struggle that one must endure to create something of greatness. Each piece of jewelry that is hand crafted within our studio tells a story. And after hours and hours of work on each piece, finally, there are those moments when we know--not from our thoughts, but from the "duende that climbs inside . . . from the soles of the feet"--that what we are creating is magical. I strive to push the boundaries and attempt the unexpected. I believe in unleashing the creative force within. Like a painter, I explore working with and mixing many different metals and stones to create a beautiful work of art.

18K midnight pendants starting from $1,325

Our partnership is not only a great opportunity to sell beautiful jewelry, but also to tell an amazing story about inspiration and dreams that will hopefully inspire others. The story behind the men and women who work at the studio is truly one of inspiration and embodies the American Dream. I feel that I have been given a chance in life to make a difference in the lives of others and challenge the status quo. This belief is a guiding principle at Armenta that we all embrace and strive to pass on to others. Please join us in this pursuit of passing on opportunities by sharing our story.

DIAMOND DREAM FINE JEWELERS BEST PROPOSAL CONTEST GRAND PRIZE WINNERS: HEATHER & MICHAEL SELTZER

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE HAPPY A proposal story featuring three New York City cops, the reading of Miranda rights, and a very-public arrest. By Heather Seltzer y first surprise came early that day. “Now what?” I asked sheepishly, as I stared out Michael’s apartment window at the sun. Its rays filtered through the rain clouds that had threatened the city all week.

M

This was totally my fault. He’d wanted to go upstate to Cornell University that weekend, but I’d pushed it off. “It’s going to rain,” I said again and again. Michael persisted throughout the week, trying every which way to convince me to go. But the weatherman held tight to his prediction and I didn’t want to make the four-hour drive to a soggy campus. Michael agreed, and we decided to stay in the city and find a movie. Now the brilliant sun mocked me. It was Fourth of July weekend and we were not up in Ithaca, where we’d met in French Lit class five years earlier, but in NYC with no real plans. So we did what young couples living in the city did when they couldn’t think of anything to do. We took a walk. A long walk, meandering through the streets, winding our way to the South Street Seaport. Back in 1992, the Seaport was bustling with shops and restaurants. We poked around the stores. I examined the clothes and tourist trinkets with Michael by my side, who all the time kept one hand protectively on the heavy black backpack he’d insisted on toting. “There are sweatshirts inside in case it rains,” he explained to me. The clouds had long disappeared but, I couldn’t fault him for being prepared. As we’d learned, the weatherman wasn’t all that reliable. We stopped to watch an African drum performance then headed into J.Crew. After weighing the merits of crewneck versus rollneck sweaters, Michael announced he was ready to move on. We left the store and headed down the sidewalk. “Excuse me, Miss!” a deep voice called. I kept walking, deciding which store to hit next. “Miss, we need to ask you to stop.” The voice was nearly in my ear.

47

“I didn’t know why I’d just lied. I had been in the store, My mind whirled. None of this made sense. I should’ve told the truth, I realized. Why were these three cops giving me the evil glare?” “Now.” Three New York City police officers confronted me. Navy uniforms, hats, batons hanging from belts, guns at the ready in holsters. These men meant business. “We saw you take that sweater,” the heaviest one said. “What sweater?” What’s he talking about? I wondered. “You were spotted shoplifting,” the officer with the mustache accused. “In J. Crew.” My heart thumped with panic. “I wasn’t even in that store,” I blurted. I didn’t know why I’d just lied. I had been in the store, but I hadn’t taken anything. My mind whirled. None of this made sense. I should’ve told the truth, I realized. Why were these three cops giving me the evil glare? “Miss, we saw you.” The first officer’s tone had grown even more serious. “We need to look at your bag.” “No, no, no!” I repeated frantically. I turned to Michael, all this while standing silently by my side. He shrugged helplessly. Seriously? I thought. He’s not going to do anything?

“A crowd of about three dozen onlookers had gathered. The three officers grinned. I stared at Michael. I still didn’t get it. Michael reached into his backpack and withdrew a small velvet box.” The third officer reached out his hand. Frantically, I tossed him my handbag. “Search me. I don’t have anything!” I insisted. My voice came out shrill and shaky. The first officer unclipped a set of silver handcuffs from his belt. “You are being arrested on charges of shoplifting—“ “No! No!” I couldn’t manage to say anything else. Arrested? What was going on here? The officer turned to Michael. “Would you like to read her her rights?” My thoughts were in a complete jumble. Michael had graduated law school a couple weeks earlier, but the police couldn’t know that. Why are they asking him to help arrest his girlfriend? I expected Michael to come loudly to my defense. “Sure,” Michael replied. He sounded confident and completely unconcerned. He stepped toward me. I gaped at him. Then he bent down on one knee. “You have the right to be proposed to . . . You have the right to be happy for the rest of your life . . . You have the right to marry the most wonderful man in the world.” A crowd of about three dozen onlookers had gathered. The three officers grinned. I stared at Michael. I still didn’t get it. Michael reached into his backpack and withdrew a small velvet box. Slowly he opened it, revealing the sparkling diamond ring. What does this have to do with stealing a sweater? I thought, my brain several steps behind the action. “Will you marry me?” he asked. The crowd pushed closer. I didn’t answer. This was way too much too fast. “Will you marry me?” Michael asked again, his tone less sure than before. Continued on page 53

We will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary this summer, and he’s never stopped surprising me—Luckily, my proposal was the one and only time I was detained by the police! For the first time that hour, one thing suddenly made sense-the man I loved had just asked me to marry him! “Yes!” I cried. “Yes!” I threw myself into his arms. The crowd cheered as we kissed. Michael reached into his backpack again and pulled out a bottle of Champagne. One of the officers reached for it and popped the cork. Then they toasted us, enjoying their part in the scheme that had totally surprised me and nearly scared me to death.

While the pure lines of today’s Transocean are strongly reminiscent of the finest classic chronograph of the 1950s, the new model reinterprets them in a resolutely contemporary style. The elegant case is distinguished by its perfectly understated design, magnified by a smooth, slender bazel with a beveled profile and streamlined lugs molding the wrist. The epitome of simplicity. The classic and round pushpieces, an nod to the first water resistant pushpieces, lend a subtle vintage touch, while the large “baton” type straight-line hands, highlighted by a luminescent substance, convey a more modern aura. A prime example of clarity and readability, the dial features meticulously refined details such as applied hour-markers, counters that are finely recessed and “snailed” and an 18k gold rendering of the initial B that served for many years as the brand emblem.

53

Michael had known that I suspected for a while that a proposal was coming. My birthday had passed a month earlier and, instead of the ring I’d been expecting, the present in the waytoo-large-to-be-a-ring box was rollerblades. Then his law school graduation came and went with pomp and circumstance and still no ring. I’d started to believe that I’d been mistaken or a bit premature in my suspicion. But Michael had the ring and was waiting for the right time. Above all, he wanted me to be totally surprised. He made elaborate and romantic plans to propose to me in the college classroom where we’d met. When I outright refused to travel up there in the rain, he was forced to improvise. He’d stuck the ring and the Champagne in his backpack, hoping the right opportunity to surprise me would show itself. While watching the African dancers, he’d spotted the cops. Telling me he had to use the restroom, he sneaked off and enlisted their help. He came up with the shoplifting scam on the spot—the perfect surprise, knowing I’d never suspect a proposal that involved handcuffs! And he was right. We will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary this summer, and he’s never stopped surprising me—with trips, jewelry, and the love he gives me and our daughters every day. Luckily, my proposal was the one and only time I was detained by the police!

DIAMOND DREAM FINE JEWELERS BEST PROPOSAL CONTEST SECOND PLACE: KIRSTEN & GABE OUR STORY.... After 4 years of dating, living together for over a year, and getting a puppy we had been hearing for quite a while, "When are you guys getting engaged?" "When do you think he'll ask you?" etc.... We didn't even know how to answer. I started saying, "When he decides he likes me enough?" Eventually, we both started telling people "We're getting engaged next Tuesday. Definitely next Tuesday." (remember this part) Gabe's 30th birthday was August 26, 2012. We were at a wedding on his birthday so I planned to give him his present on Monday. I had been teasing him for weeks about the fact that he would never guess his birthday present. (I gave him 20 guesses and he still didn't get it) What I didn't know was that Gabe was planning to propose the next week....

Sleep

His birthday present was a glider plane ride over the Delaware Water Gap and Kittany mountains scheduled for Monday the 27th. Unfortunately the weather did not agree with a glider plane ride on Monday. We re-scheduled for the next morning. On Tuesday, August 28th Gabe planned to propose. We were leaving for a week of vacation in Newport, Rhode Island that day. His original plan was to propose at sunset, on the beach, in Newport but since the glider plane ride was rescheduled we wouldn't have made it in time. Gabe thought on his feet.... We got to the Blairstown, NJ airport and began our flight. The small plane towed us to 3,000 feet and as I was gazing at the incredible scenery Gabe reminded me "It's next Tuesday." I thought to myself, "Yeah, I know it's Tuesday." I turned towards him and suddenly saw he had pulled a ring from his pocket! I was absolutely speechless. He said, "Kirsten, this is an amazing birthday present, but what would be even more amazing is if you spent the rest of your life with me." .... I SAID YES!!!!!!!!!!!

After a thumbs up from the pilot, we glided back down to safety and to our new beginning.
