The

PROCESS of a DNL GEMSTONE

1. CREATING THE MATRIX - At extreme temperatures, approaching 4000 degrees, we mix a proprietary blend of elements in a very specific sequence and we bring them to a molten state called a “matrix”. 2. COOLING

- The matrix is then cooled in stages in a carefully controlled fashion. During this cooling process, the crystals form. After the matrix is cooled, the product is called a "boule" which is a solid object containing crystallized and non-crystallized material.

3. EXTRACTION

- The boule is broken up (actually with a big hammer) and the crystals are extracted. At this point, they resemble an uncut, rough diamond crystal.

4. INSPECTION

- The crystals are then inspected for quality in a similar fashion to how rough diamonds are inspected and graded. A laser beam is passed through the crystal which highlights internal flaws and gives a guide for rough cutting.

5. CUTTING - Once rough cutting is complete, the stones are again sorted and moved on to the final cutting stage which is done in our Austrian fine-cutting facility. Because, after rough cutting, our crystals are basically flawless, the cutting process can be much more precise than for a natural diamond (the cutters are not trying to “work around” and hide flaws). This enables all stones to be cut to Ideal Cut standards, which only about 15% of stones achieve in the diamond world. 6. OUR GEMSTONE COATING

- The Diamond Nexus coating is much different from anything else available in the market today, and has been a multi-year development process. The DNL coating material is corundum and other proprietary materials which is substantial, visible under microscopy, and has important measurable physical characteristics. The coating seals the stones’ surface, greatly lowers porosity, makes the stone impervious to outside contaminants, and increases its hardness. 7. QUALITY CONTROL - Diamond Nexus gemstones are sorted and graded in the same way as earth-mined diamonds. Each stone is inspected, evaluated, and graded against a perfect control sample. Any gemstones exhibiting defects in cut, color or clarity are rejected. Gemstones are stored in diamond paper until they are sold as loose stones, or set in jewelry.

Color describes the amount of color a diamond contains. The color scale ranges from absolutely colorless (D color) which is the most preferred, all the way down to colors that can be quite gray and muddy looking. In addition to white stones, diamonds can come in some pretty intense colors called "fancy colors" which may be yellow, red, pink, blue, and even green. But when most people think of a diamond, they are thinking of the traditional white diamond. All of our stones are D color.

CARAT Carat is the unit of weight for a diamond. In nature, large diamonds are much rarer than small ones, so they will come with a much higher price tag. Cut speaks to the way a diamond’s proportions are created. It is really quite mathematical. An ideally cut diamond will yield the most fire and brilliance. In the jewelry industry, the Ideal Cut Formula was first developed in 1919 by Marcel Tolkowsky, a Belgian diamond cutter and engineer. Every few years, new ring styles take the stage and become instant favorites with brides (think colored stones, pavé settings, etc.) Well the same is true for precious metals over the decades. From yellow gold to platinum, each metal has its own set of virtues. Your job is to pick the one that’s right for you.

States are 18kt, but 14kt is more common and in many ways is a better choice. Once on your finger, it is difficult to see a difference between the two. All Diamond Nexus engagement rings are available in either 14k or 18k gold, as well as platinum and palladium.

14KT…18KT…WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? WHY DON’T I SEE RINGS IN 24KT GOLD?

YELLOW GOLD VS. WHITE GOLD

24kt gold is 100% pure gold. So why aren’t all engagement rings made out of it? Well, it is generally too soft to be used in jewelry making. Most gold jewelry needs to be combined with some other element to give it strength and durability. Some common metals gold is combined with are: nickel, zinc, silver, copper, platinum, and palladium. So, for example, 18kt gold is 18 parts gold and 6 parts another metal. That is why 18kt gold is said to be 75% pure (18/24). The science of mixing alloys is really quite interesting. All gold is yellow when it comes out of the Earth. It is the metal you mix with it that creates the different colors we love.

It’s a matter of taste. Years ago, most engagement rings were created in yellow gold, but the trend over the last two decades continues to favor white gold for an engagement setting. Nearly 80% of the engagement rings in the USA are made in a white color metal, be it white gold or platinum. There are certainly women who are diehard yellow gold fans (more power to you!), but most purchases these days are for rings with a white gold finish. The popularity of stones set in white metal comes from the fact that white metal sets off a diamond center stone with a brighter, more radiant look.

White gold is created by mixing yellow gold with nickel. Since a lot of people are allergic to nickel, palladium is another metal used to create the color of white gold. It’s more expensive than nickel, but does not cause allergic reaction. All Diamond Nexus white gold is made with palladium. All white gold jewelry is then coated with rhodium, a member of the platinum family. Rhodium makes the ring brighter, more shiny, and more durable. Rose gold is created by mixing copper with yellow gold. There is a big trend right now to mix gold colors in a ring. Tri-color rings can be a unique way to make a statement.

As you might have guessed, the higher the proportion of gold used in the final metal, the more valuable and expensive the metal will be. All things being equal, an 18kt ring will be more expensive than a 14kt ring. Some engagement rings in the United

PLATINUM…THE ULTIMATE METAL?

Platinum is an exceptional, very white metal, which unlike gold is used to make jewelry in almost its pure form. When you get a platinum ring it is likely to be 95% pure with only minimal trace elements making up the other 5%. Strong and long wearing, platinum does not need to be rhodium plated like white gold and a ring made of platinum will be heavier than its white gold counterpart. Platinum is certainly an elegant choice for an engagement ring setting and many couples fall in love with its prestige. Still, many couples shy away from its high price tag. Also, platinum is not as bright and reflective as white gold and it develops a “patina” over time. Platinum lovers value this understated luster, but some couples don’t care for the duller look. When I create a piece of jewelry, I see it done in my head before I ever start.

Scott Faúver Jones Scott Faúver Jones was born and raised in Wisconsin. His middle name, which he chose for the name of his jewelry line, was originally his grandmother’s maiden name. Fittingly enough, “Faúver” is a surname originating in southern France that refers to a smith or a craftsman. Scott has always been an artist, even since childhood. “At Christmas, all my friends got expensive presents,” he recalls. “My parents did not have the money, so I ended up making most of my toys so I could play with the other (kids).” At the age of five or six, he made a crossbow from bits of scrap that he found, which his parents thought was cute until an arrow went through the back door. This sense of creativity and adventure served him well later in life, though, when he began his work in jewelry in the late 1970s, opened his own custom jewelry shop in the 80s, travelled the country as a Master Painter for the Thomas Kindade Co., and later became a Navy photographer

for eight years before returning to his love of jewelry design. He has made jewelry for two presidents, (these pieces are currently in the Smithsonian Institution,) two first ladies, and one royal Princess. Scott has been approached many times before about creating his own line of jewelry, and has always declined because he didn’t feel comfortable with the people who were offering. But after having worked with Diamond Nexus for awhile and getting to know the company, he finally “felt like the time was right.” He says, “I feel like I’m part of the family.” The original Faúver Collection embraces a distinctly clean, contemporary look. The most recent additions to the line are named after some of Scott’s immediate family members, bringing his artistic creations even closer to his heart.

Custom earrings, necklaces, etc., have no average cost as their design can range from very simple to extremely elaborate. Four factors determine the cost of your piece. Custom pieces can be done in as little as ten days from the time your design is finalized.

DESIGN FEE - The initial consultation with our designers is free; the optional Computer Aided Design (CAD) image rendering is $175 STONES - Almost all Diamond Nexus gemstones are priced at a standard $149 per carat. METAL - The cost of precious metals varies from day to day with the global market. The amount of metal required for your design and the type of metal you select will determine its cost. LABOR - The more complicated the design, the more intensive the craftsmanship will be and hence the greater the cost of labor. That cannot be determined until we know exactly what we are creating.
