Introduction to Study in Higher Education Briefing

Why have a unit of this nature?  It provides us with

opportunities to introduce you to the essentials of your degree programme from the outset;  ISHE is linked to your entire degree;  Our 1st years have told us it is useful in bridging the gap between their previous study and HE. Here's what some of our students have said

The aims of the unit  to introduce you to

learning at undergraduate level;  to orientate you within your course, the College and the University;  to induct you into the specific practices and knowledge base of your discipline.

The key elements of the unit The expected learning outcomes: Upon successful completion of this unit you will be able to demonstrate:

 evidence of engagement with the

principles and practices of your discipline;

 an ability to locate and evaluate

information from a range of written and/or visual sources;

 an ability to communicate ideas

and arguments in an academic form;

 evidence of engagement with the

principles of Personal and Professional Development (PPD).

PPD - what is it?  Personal and professional

development (See detailed outline in your Course Handbook)

 Through PPD we offer you a

structured and supported process which will help you reflect upon your own learning, performance, and plan for your personal, educational and career development.

Why include this in our courses? Key feature: it’s about understanding how you learn.

Here's what some students have said about PPD: What is this PPD thing?

My hopes... My fears... Reflect on why you have come to LCF.  What do I hope to get

from my studies?  What am I apprehensive about?  What are my goals?

Use post-it notes to record your answers.

The lectures and seminars: an overview  Research skills  Essential design skills relevant

   

to your programme: - InDesign - technical drawing Visual communication skills Academic writing skills Presentation skills Essential resources to support your learning You will also need to undertake self-directed independent study to support your learning.

Assessment How the unit will be assessed: 1) Essay: 1250 words Object Analysis:

“Object-based research provides unique insights into the historic and aesthetic developments of fashion”. Steele, V. (1998). ‘A museum of fashion is more than a clothes bag’, Fashion Theory 2 (4): 327.

Using visual analysis, discuss Steele’s statement above in relation to your chosen object. Your chosen object can be an item in a museum collection / exhibition / something you own, but you must include a photograph and details of where the object is held. You may wish to link your choice of object to your Autumn Term design project based on ‘Cultural & National Identity’ and therefore, combine your research activities, analysis and design investigation together

Assessment contd. 2.Reflective Statement (500 words)

ď‚—

Using the approach and principles of PPD (Personal and Professional Development) you will write a 500 word reflective piece on your learning and development. Here you should focus on how you have developed both personally and in relation to your work during your first term of study at Higher Education level. In order to do this, you will need to think back over your performance this term, with a view to identifying principles and strategies that will enable you to improve over the rest of the year. You should highlight your strengths, as well as areas you need to develop. Working with resources such as the PPD Coach and the Visual Directions website you see in the Reading and Resource List section of this Unit Handbook may be useful to you in this exercise.

ď‚—

Keeping a weekly journal as you progress through this first term of the course will help you to produce this piece of writing, and we will be discussing ways of doing this by sharing ideas during the taught sessions.

Assessment contd. 3. Visual Communication (A3 bound sketchbook) To include:  examples of your fashion drawings  observational drawings  technical drawings  A3 presentation layout using InDesign.

 Working on A3 Paper, you will

explore different approaches to Visual Communication using a variety of techniques through Fashion Drawing and Observational Drawing.  Please refer to the Reading and Resource List in this Unit Handbook for recommended publications.

LCF?  What sort of things do you expect to learn about on a course of this nature?  What sorts of skills will you need?  What do you think we expect from you?

Here’s what some of our students have said: One of the best aspects of the course...

Our expectations: 'Studentship’ – being an effective student  What is 'studentship’?

i.e what makes a ‘good’ student? Discuss in pairs and record your answers on postit notes.

What will your LCF story be? Here's what one student told us ‌
