The orchestration of the multitude of individual activities in the course of development is an equally important part of the task, and the success of urban design therefore depends as much on its ability to perform this part of the task. MAIN TASK My bachelor thesis contained 2 main parts: a first one in a group of 6 students where we had to create a development strategy for Braila county, which was focused on promoting the turism and local identity, and a second one, where I had to choose one of the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s settlements, which, in my case was Stancuta village. For this second phase I had to take the strategy to the next level and apply it by taking in consideration the local values of the village. The architectural part was a response to this strategy.

INTRODUCTION Braila County has strong potentials like pitoresque landscape, traditional activities and agriculture. We have chosen to promote it as an agro-touristic spot and a place where you can learn about the Romanian tradition values. Stancuta village has a history related to beekeeping and pomiculture. I have decided to use these traditions and combine them with the modern practices and give a chance to the young passionate people to emerge in a fruitful activity. Creating a community of beekeepers along a belt of greenery and along the small river edging the village stands as a gesture in promoting the local values and making sure that they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get lost in the existent transition between new and old technologies. It also represent a way in slowing down the tendency of people moving from the rural to the urban areas, as they lack opportunities in such forgotten places. 2

The beekeeperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house is adapted to the village households, it is made â&#x20AC;&#x2039;â&#x20AC;&#x2039;of biodegradable materials and has green supply facilities. The house parcel is divided into sub-areas: the house and the anexes, the apiary and the orchard. The type of the house is wagon, having the circulation between the rooms as a central one. Although the rooms have wide spaces, they are efficiently heated and maintained. Textures are as natural as possible and according to the local architecture or ressembling to it. To break the monotony of the house, I have decided to fragment it and create different levels, using the considerable outdoor level difference and the different use of materials. Because the plot stands at the most important crossroad of the community, I configured it differently and added the function of trade. There is a small shop where you can sell the outcoming products likeas honey, fruits and innovative new products that can emerge from combining the first two. Therefore, the household supports small business development based on local products. While the exterior is more traditional and preserving the local aspect, the interior hides a modern layout and furniture that would satisfy the modern needs nowadays. It was also a way to attract the young population into staying in the village and developing a local bussiness, while making sure that they do not lack the facilities that the urban life has to offer. In the end, it represents a mix between the modern and the traditional.

Town Houses

This is a place for few lucky people due to the atmosphere of a luxury residential zone and a boat club. Here, the water will be experienced in a unique and exclusive way.

A shared community feeling which faces on the water canal. The pre-existent trees are the core of this area, buildings are shaped in consideration to them.

The townhouses are mostly for the families that will want to live in a pulsing area, but still have the feeling of the traditional suburb, for example, a small road where the kids have the possibilities to play together.

This block is a community itself. It has several backyards, but appear as a whole due to the “blue water” connection between them. Even though the block has a large scale, the human scale is given by small housing.

This area is the combination of a business environment and a residential atmosphere. Everything is seasoned with the big contrast between this and a wild island in front of the area.

An intimate recreational space alongside a varied coastline where a new family can settle down and enjoy a nautical place. Different views characterize this area, providing a rich experience of the water and the greenery.

MAIN TASK The project A piece of Copenhagen deals with the transformation of H.C. Ørsted Værket which is situated in a close proximity to the core of Copenhagen. The common thread throughout the project is the theme of trying to understand and develop a vibrant district that captures the pulse and the rhythm of the city. By thoroughly studying Copenhagen and looking into other cities as a source of reference the goal is to create an analytical base that will help create a dense and diverse neighborhood. In addition to this the focus is on the small gestures in the local communities, the motto being - think local, act local.

INTRODUCTION H.C. Ørsted Værket is an old poweplant complex. Most of the buildings and in-between spaces have lost their main functionality, and have been taken over by the urban subcultures. The place gives you the feeling of a point where nature meets the urban physical planning. Beauty can be found in the lack of organization of the area, and also in the elements that don’t belong to the place. The powerplant is a symphony of colors, scales, materials, created by the stretch of time. The project was an attempt to create space for diversity: diversity of places, diversity of people, diversity of buildings, diversity of atmospheres. Because , as a methaphor, we are capturing the energy of the city in one place that once gave all its energy to the city. The vision was to re-use the Power station as a social and cultural catalyst for the Southern Harbor of Copenhagen. 10

The Wild Island, situated along the east harbour line and in connection to the office/commercial area, is more than just a land with recreational use, having an educational purpose as well, and directly connected to the hydrology system. The canal along the island is meant to clean all the water collected from the streets on the site. The people can observe the cleaning process of the water, consisting in 3 steps and taking place in 3 basins. The island is divided in 6 different areas: the entrance areas, where you can find info points and maps (the main entrance also has a built structure from reused materials, destined for workshops about the hydrology), the national plants area, the wild flowers areas, the picnic areas and the edible plants area, situated at the end of the island, where the water is clean. In front of the second basin, there is also a viewing point, which provides and overview of the whole island for the visitors, but also shade in summer time. Most of the plants chosen for the wild island have an unique colour palette during all 4 seasons, and are combined so they can contrast and create a pleasant atmosphere for walking, having lunch, playing and learning. The â&#x20AC;&#x153;wildâ&#x20AC;? island is an ecosystem for birds and small animals in the urban landscape, contrasting with the built areas and breaking the usual concrete edge of the waterfront, developed in all Copenhagen. THE CARAVANSERY FACTORY

PROJECT INFO Workshop: 1st semester Master project Year and Institute: 2014 Aalborg University Duration and site location: 1 1/2 months, Horsens, Denmark

MAIN TASK This project has been focusing on temporary use of the urban space and has focused on the pathways along the main commercial street in Horsens. The purpose was to reinvent these introvert spaces that are curently parking lots and give them a proper use in the city center.

INTRODUCTION

Horsens is a danish town located in east Jutland. Despite its fruitful history, Horsens has lost its identity and the municipality is curently trying to develop a new one for the old ”prison” town. During this searching process, the city is in a permanent transformation, experimenting new urban layers and new cultural/ entertainment projects and events, like the Horsens Medieval Festival. The success of this temporary kind of projects should be translated into more permanent structures. The municipality has made a priority out of transforming the city centre, which is also in an unclear state now, and in a rather danger of decaying, due to the future fall of the commerce. The city center has become a place of transit and exchange. This project is a response to the municipality’s strategy to focus on the cultural and educational sectors. The Caravansery Factory introduces these types of activities, following the principles of a caravansery: a place to rest, trade, and entertainment, a place for temporary use, a place of safety and intimacy, a place where people break from the daily routine and experience something new and be involved, also, in other types of trading: the cultural and educational ones. Temporary staying of the guest in a caravansary can be translated in temporary invaders of the urban space, either if it’s about people, activities or structures. The system of pathways will embrace a new identity: “A place where cultures meet. Cultures and education.” 15
