SIMON CAMPING
SIMON CAMPING A Catalogue of Recent Works: Celebrating 35 Years of Exhibitions The art of Simon Camping captures the scale and awe of the Canadian Wilderness like no other artist. In his acrylic watercolours every component is sure, perfectly placed and strongly defined, colours are rich and crisp in their outline. Each work is precisely executed there is never a mislaid brush stroke or the accidental creation of a part. Using only essential elements, Simon Camping renders clear recognizable forms creating rocks, trees, water, sun, wind and even thin air. Remarkably his paintings bring to life the feeling of being in the natural environment; the calm of the low tide and the force of the ocean and the magnificence of the high alpine with all the sense of wonder and emotion intact. This Exhibition of original works celebrates thirty five years since Simon Camping exhibited his first collection of masterful watercolours. It has been a joy, through the years, to watch Simon paint the magnificence of the wild and high Canadian landscape with poetic accuracy Please join us along with the artist, Simon Camping, Saturday April 16th at Diana Paul Galleries for the viewing and sale of these original acrylics on paper. A Champagne Tasting — champagnes by J. Webb Wine Merchants will be featured to celebrate Mr. Camping’s 35 year career landmark. Nina Paul Rogers, Managing Director. Diana Paul, Founding Director.

In The Arms Of Nature – Art By Simon Camping “ To artists, nature, as a projection of human states of mind… is a valid source of moral, emotional, and aesthetic truth, a manifestation of beauty and divinity in the visual world.” Oliver W. Larkin Born in 1928 in Dokkum, Holland, Camping has demonstrated, from the beginning of his artistic career, an interest in the philosophical foundations of the Dutch seventeen-century landscapists and the French Barbizon painters. He incorporated, in his early work, some philosophical elements from the paintings by the artists he revered and loved and created his own vision of nature. Fascinated by the unspoiled wilderness of western Canada with her majestic Rocky Mountains and poetic Pacific Rim, Camping arrived in 1954 to Calgary. Eventually, he settled down in 1981 on the West Coast. There, Camping found not only a much-needed refuge from the sociotechnical and political turmoil of the industrially and economically charged world, but also an artistic inspiration. This resulted in a number of very intimate, yet very impressive paintings. Simon Camping’s acrylics are exquisite, magnificent portrayals of western Canada’s environment and demonstrate his fine feeling of colour. Each painting has its own scheme of colour with its’ pervading hue, its’ harmonies and its’ contrasts. And lastly, there is the masterly handling of medium. A Camping’s sky, for instance, with its atmospheric depths and tender gradations is the last word in acrylic manipulation. Simon Camping provides detailed realism in his work, and paints clear recognizable forms. His colours are rich and crisp in their outline, and give an essentially three-dimensional quality to he landscapes. There is never hesitation or the accidental creation of a form. Every component is sure, perfectly placed and strongly defined. Simon Camping has a unique ability to examine and then record the very expressive and multiform environment. Through his paintings a greater awareness of the sublime beauty of the landscape has resulted. No artist could achieve more. Jacek (Jack) Malec Art Historian / Critic

“ The unspoiled wildness of nature is a reflection of the one who created it. The wonder of life — the brilliance of colour, the violence of a storm, the starkness of winter, the solitude — is a religious experience made touchable.” Simon Camping
