Between the village and the landscape fishing, education and leisure center
Sanmartinu Sarbesc, Romania / project / individual
Confronted with the Romania’s massive exode towards Western Europe issue, the project offers a solution to Sanmartinu Sarbesc village post-comunist depopulation problem. By studying the territorial properties of Banat region, it is discovered the water and the landscape as main resources, since it used to be Panonian Sea during the Miocene geological epoch (see the topographic map). The retraction of the sea, left behind what we now call the Panonian Plain, known for its swamp lands in Roman Empire times. For the last 1000 years, Banat was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire on and off. However, they have design today’s landscape of the region, by drying the swamp, constructing roads, villages, and colonizing with Germans from Swabia, Alsace and Bavaria for fertile lands geopolitical presence. Even though Sanmartinu Sarbesc village flourished during the communist period through the collective agricultural harvest (CAP), postcomunist era activated a massive depopulation in Romania’s country side. This was caused mainly by the closing of the CAPs, which was a statement of whipping out Ceausescu’s dictatorial regime. The project is research for Banat territory’s future in a postcomunist era. Omogen territorial development creates opportunity on all layers of the society, be it cultural of economy. It is a discussion between Bernardo Secchi’s “La ville du vingtieme siecle“ and Alberto Magnaghi “Le projet local“. Territorial connectivity is assured due to the border proximity with Hungary and Serbia, the closest important city Timisoara(RO) is 20 mins away, 1.5h to Szeged(HU), 1.5h to Novi Sad(CS). The capitals Budapest(HU) and Belgrade(CS) are no more than 2.5h away.
Density
Hydrography
Banat Region is split in 3 countries, Hungary, Serbia and Romania
Topography [Understanding the territory] By overlaying topography and hydrography maps, we see how the Danube collects the water streams towards the Black Sea. Low density in Romania and Serbia and fast route connection with Hungary.
LANDSCAPE. The site is located on a NATURE 2000 site known for the red falcon birds. A circuit for birdwatch is proposed for pedestrians and bikers. FISH. Using the pre-existing local water basins for fish growth and selling them in the region, creates boosts the local economy, creates jobs, makes place for market with a local identity. Interior basins are used for breeding. EDUCATION. Workshop and office spaces are provided for children, adults and visiting students from local agriculture and veterinary schools, with an exhibition space for presentations and lounge. LEISURE. The local fish restaurant with reception hall and accommodation.

Social centre for Gypsy integration Timisoara, Romania / project / group
Next to Traian market in Timisoara, which is known as a Roma neighbourhood, the social centre is implemented by Bega channel with an open space amphitheatre. The project reconverts an ancient factory site by keeping the two main buildings and adding to it a futuristic glass junction, that brings roma-culture into today’s trend. The spaces include (1)social counselling for young, unemployed and families, (2) outside amphitheatre and an inside one, (3) exhibition hall, (4) cooking workshops, (5) welding workshops and (6) coworking spaces where locals and gypsies meet and share, as well as underground (7) parking.

Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium / project / group The city of Ottignies - Louvain la Neuve, by the attractiveness exercised by the presence of the university, is a rapidly developing agglomeration. It is therefore necessary to plan its development, the risk being an anarchic artificialisation of natural areas. The release of the Lemaire concrete site in Ottignies is an opportunity to rethink its urbanism and offer it a real overall coherence. Louvain la Neuve has a real centrality, but there is another centrality on the other side of the Bois des Rêves, on the historic site of Ottignies, where the city administration is located. We propose, therefore, to create a new urban center bringing together all the dispersed institutions, thanks to a large green vertebral column. This one crosses the valley of the Dyle and becomes the major space of Ottignies, the support of the public events and a place of walk. It crosses the main public buildings: the Douaire farm, the shopping center, the old industrial hall converted into a public greenhouse, and at the center of it all, the new citizen’s house, associated with the station. It is home to a new form of urban governance: participatory democracy, which by its operation guarantees more interaction between citizens and their involvement in the functioning of the city. The architectural expression is the result of adaptation to the climate and the desire to recover rainwater. Large roofs dump them in impluviums, vegetated, which will filter the water at the same time as to decorate the interior spaces.

The CNDK extension was a public competition financed with public funds for the construction of several new classrooms into a historical site. The challenge was minimizing the costs, by using simple and cheap construction such as prefabricated concrete panels is an aesthetic way, on a historic site. I was involved with the graphic presentation of the project. Our project was awarded with the first prize and entered its execution phase.

ESPACE BLEU
Courtrai, Belgique / research workshop / group work The territory research workshop with Paola Vigano on the euroregion Lille - Tournai - Courtrai. Over the Rhosnes we studied the capillaries of streams. Each capillary is given an identity, either populated or wild. In the flood-prone urban areas of the Rhosnes, in the village of Frasnes, we propose to open the water’s edge to the public. The idea of this approach is to inform citizens about the importance of water, to enhance it, and to no longer treat the edges of capillaries as erased places.
Different types of capillaries / Intervention at Frasnes-lez-Anvaing
Irrigate inhabited capillaries in soft mobility
Redrawing capillaries structuring agents for agriculture

London and Paris / comision / internship The Kensigton Archilace (London) project was commissioned by the royal family for the Kensigton Palace. The piece implied digital fabrication techniques (Rhino, Grasshopper, Arduino), but also manual lace making tachnique and was decorated with Swarowski crystals. The same technique was used for the annual Elton John’s Garden Party (London) for the anti HIV-SIDA charity event. The Wind Report (Paris) was commissioned for Bloomberg HQ in Paris and implied more of a hands on approach for installing the Arduino boards to the modules.
