CONTENTS The five projects presented in these pages share the same initial idea. The structure appears as a gesture that generates an architectural object, placing itself in a certain context and outlining different spaces. I believe that in a project the structure should not represent only a technical part, a framework, as it can become a space in itself.

1 Rebuilding the Cantacuzino Domain. Pavilions and Equestrian Centre in the Gardens of Petit Trianon Diploma project UAUIM 2021 Location: Florești, Prahova, Romania Tutor: arch. Andrei Șerbescu
The project does not present an ideal, final image, but proposes a process in which the whole domain is reconstructed in time. The ruined structure remains visible in its current configuration, as it possesses certain particular spatial qualities, its interior being, in fact, a large exterior room. Also, the remaining fragments of this structure represent witnesses of other typologies of spaces from an earlier period, a period in which the extra-urban villa was the representative element of the noble domains. As for the proposed interventions, they are subordinated to the principles that govern the existing ensemble, but proclaim their status as contemporary architectural objects. The house and the equestrian centre appear as a response to a need of the place, representing an important factor, both socially and economically, in the process of reactivation of the Cantacuzino Domain. Thus, the project starts from a series of extremely rigorous structural elements that find their place in the landscape and contribute to the reorganization of the entire domain, outlining spaces, places, alleys, perspectives. The reconstruction of the Cantacuzino Domain is a process, which, with the help of the proposed interventions, gives meaning to the existing structures and creates new structures that shape this place.

The intervention closes the urban isle with two volumes connected to each other. The first volume is a functional one, a bar that meets all the requirements of the site: it covers the blind wall, aligns to the cornice and contains all the technical spaces necessary for a museum. The second volume contains the exhibition spaces on the upper floors, a terrace, and on the ground floor it creates a slightly lowered piazza, an urban room offered to the community. At first there were the skylights, cones that get various shapes to illuminate the exhibited objects and to serve as a background for art. But, most importantly, these skylights become the structure itself, turning into four concrete legs that support the entire building. In the end, concrete petals are attached to close the building. They are not touching each other in order to suggest the fact that they are not part of the building’s structure, and they have different shapes in order to define the different spaces of the museum: the piazza, the exhibition, the terrace.

3 Art Centre Competition project | Mention YAC 2020 Location: Moncalieri, Italy Teammate: Mihai Șom
Layers of history enrich the value of the Villa Altissimo. It is a continuous process that is part of the evolution of any monument. The proposal takes into account the previous steps, seeking to complement existing parts and create coherence between them. Furthermore, constantly thinking about the relationship between Italian monuments and the public space, we decided to create a square “piazza” in front of the villa, which links the main artistic functions and gives hierarchy to the ensemble. The villa is transformed into an art coffer, waiting to keep safe all the art pieces that are going to be produced here. A small theater is set up in the attic. At the base of the hill, the once blinded niches open, showing the artists’ workshops and their work. On the next side of the piazza, a long building mirrors the portico space of the artists and holds within the guests functions: the interior and exterior pools and the access of the restaurant. The same building contains the stairs leading to the spaces below: the spa and the reception area. From reception, one can also access the guests rooms that occupy the unused space below the terrace of the villa. Surrounding all the ensemble, pathways lead to the art cabins hidden amongst the forest. All the new built elements seek to preserve and be influenced by the character of the existing buildings without mimicking the plastic elements, but assuming the role of a contemporary layer of the ensemble.

4 Wooden Structure for Neptune Baths Competition project | First place | Built Herculane Project 2020 Location: Băile Herculane, Romania Teammate: Mihai Șom
The proposal consists of a scaffolding module repeated along the façade at required points. An X-shaped element rises and rests on a pillar, thus forming several triangles, non-deformable elements. In this way, the structure achieves its goal to protect the façade and the pedestrians with minimal, essential means. A metal mesh allows one to see the façade of Neptune Baths while being a protective layer. At street level, black painted circles are added to the lower triangle, acting as a signal and display support for information about Herculane Project. This creates a sequential route through the niches offered to the street by the scaffolding. The whole intervention is supported on wooden blocks. Their role is to protect the wood from soil moisture and to create a uniform plan for the structure.

5 Pavilion on the Bank of Cerna River Competition project | First place | Built Herculane Project 2019 Location: Băile Herculane, Romania Teammate: Mihai Șom
The competition involved proposing a pavilion near the river, a place where tourists could rest or change their clothes to bathe. The pavilion finds its place in the landscape, standing over an existing concrete block. Thin wooden boards hold the white gravel, forming the steps, leading to the pavilion. This wooden structure works as a gateway to the river, but also as a place where you can linger, a place offered to the community. The entire structure is made out of a single type of element, a wooden element with a square section of 5x5 cm, that acquires various shapes and lengths in order to create the pillars, the covering grid and the bench. An orange circle marks the entrance and provides support for various information. One year after construction, the pavilion found its place in the community. People sometimes add a clock, sheets that protect them from wind and sun, nails that work as hangers for towels and clothes. As time goes by, the pavilion is transformed and enriched by its users.
The project evolved so much on site that at one point we gave up digital drawing and worked only by hand, on paper.
