Tasked with designing residential units in the community of Cambridge Ontario, this project looked at opportunities to provide a fresh approach to medium density housing types. The design inspires a sense of community within the development while still maintaining a comfortable level of privacy for its tenants. This is accomplished by playing with the push and pull of windows as well as positioning of balconies. This play with various elements also create a facade that responds to the conditions of the corner site which is affected by heavier traffic on Grand Ave than Blair St.

Urban Oasis Type Public Pavilion | Design Studio Site Shibuya, Tokyo Japan Date 10.2014 10
Urban Oasis is a public installation in response to the city dweller’s need for quiet contemplation and solitude. The clean palette of materials in the facade offers the onlooker a pause amidst the commercial storefronts all vying for attention. Stripped of modern climate and temperature control systems the interior offers shelter without isolating the occupant from the exterior environment completely.

Behind the concrete walls the first level offers the occupant a naturally lit space for meditation and escape from city’s ability to overwhelm the senses.
The spiral staircase is inserted diagonally in the building. From the street is appears as if to emerge from the base and expand out of the facade, giving the passersby a teasing glimpse of what the second level holds. The glass tube also acts as a light well for the lower level.
Possessing the depth of an entire floor, the upper level allows for a deeper bed of soil for vegetation. Concrete walls around this small ecosystem block out the immediate buildings, giving focus to the sky to reconnects the city dweller to nature while in an urban environment

LAIR While the value of the library depreciates as a source of information in the digiST C tal age, the infrastructure continues to adapt and stay relevant to the general public. This design remains a viable part of the community by providing not just a container of books but a space open to congregation and play. The large staircase is the key design and structural element of which floor plates are staggered around to create a variety of spaces accommodating the noise levels of various programs.

The stair in the design of this library is the an essential component. It is a space where interaction, relaxation and movement take place. Westmount does not exist as a destination, rather it allows visitors to experience the spaces within as they travel along the large staircase that is featured. This can be likened to the reason why some people prefer the texture and process of reading a real book in an age of e-readers and e-books. 31
