Over the years, the studying of dreams has been through a lot of debate – What does the content mean? How do we dream? What is the function of a dream? What is the purpose of the dream? There has not been any prominent purpose or function of dreams, but some cultures have developed their own ideas of what dreams can represent or do. Shamanism believed that dreams could be controlled and executed, but that they were diagnosed as illnesses. Some cultures feel that since dreams are the visuals of the subconscious, they could predict future events. Other cultures believe that dreams solely provide an outlet for creativity and can be incorporated in many different areas – from art to science to fiction writing. Even though the purpose and function of dreams has been hard to define, one thing one can understand is that dreams are interesting. People are obsessed with decoding and seeing what another person is dreaming about because it has been said that a personʼs dreams reveal their most inner thoughts and personal feelings. People are also fascinated by dream interpretations and what they could represent. Dream interpretation does play on this mystery, ranging in all types of hidden meanings depending on the culture and time.

THESIS

SO WHAT IS THE THESIS?

My thesis project started from general interest in Dreams and dream

scenarios. After that, I started to focus on people’s dreams and their fascination with their dreams (and those around them). After this, I started thinking about dream design and how people usually buy things that are interested in, so I started to think about dreams as a possible commidy in the future- the ability to buy a dream from someone famous or not. How much would you pay for a dream designed by or of Murakami?

I am rasing dreams as a medium. I also raised this idea partially

because of immence technology advances being made today that could lead us down the route of seeing what other people think about - such as dreams & memories. Maybe not full memories, but perhaps just colors or faint imagery. With this I want to expand on this idea by creating dreams, designing other people’s dreams with the technology that I only have available to me right now.

Lastly, I am figure out my options for the way I present the imagery to

the audience. It could be through sampling- using the “subconscious” of the internet search or controlling my own dreams by propping it, etc- “lucid”

KEY COMPONENTS There are several key components and various types of inspiration that have led me to this specific path, besides the five projects assigned during class. These key items are shaping my project and are influencing my choice in design, form, and medium: - Surrealism - Chris Marker’s La Jette Film - Chris Marker & Michael Goudry films; Christopher Nolan’s Inception. - The Psychology of Dreams - Contemporary sampling image style - Current movies that deal with dreams such as Inception, The Science of Sleep, Memento, Nightmare on Elm Street, and many many more. - Surrealism sculptures and pieces such as the Dream of Venus - Dream Catchers - Technology advaances such as the fMRI machine Berkely created to “read” people’s minds while they watched a movie trailer. The fMRI gives someone a visualization of what the person sees when they watch the movie trailer. - The Dream Machine - Fine Art Photography and all art that pertain to dream/ dream scenarios. - Different film making effects such as the Ken Burn’s effect and the Alfred Hitchcock Zoom - Ambient music and “drug” music.

NEXT SEMESTER

PLAN FOR NEXT SEMESTER This is going to be my plan for next semester: - I am going to create at least 3 different dream scenarios using Photography, Final Cut Pro, props, design, photoshop and many other mediums. - My plan is to create small photographic film pieces that display the dream at hand. - First plan: get the film editing and transitions correct and perfect this so that I know what will work once I start editing and putting together the films. - Second plan: shoot the prelimary photography - Third Plan: Edit and reshoot photography. Prop making included. - Fourth plan: Create the pieces and edit, - Fifth & Last plan: design a book that explains my thesis, my intentions, the topic at hand and about the different dream scenarios. What I will need in order to display the thesis is preferably, 3 small screens (one for each piece) with the book layed out in front of the pieces. film film
