FEEDBACK OVER THE FIRST HALF OF THESIS, I HAVE RECIEVED ALOT OF FEEDBACK FROM CLASSMATES & LUKE THAT HAVE HONED MY IDEAS. - Suggestion of creating a dream mapping system or a personal dream journal - Castenilli and the Shamans - Dream Interpretation in relation to the cultural differences and similarities - Deja Vu and Reincarnation - CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS - “Memento” and “Inception - Create a dream booth or a dream space experience that lets a person fall asleep/ become hypnotized/ be able to experience someone elseʼs dream through a “surround sound” type of visualization - Sound Design piece - Does Assimulation have anything to do with this piece? - Create an API/ Interactive Infographic/ Data Visual that explores dreams - Do a social investigation research - What is the difference between Freud and Jungʼs thoughts on Dreams - Dream Machine Project - Are dreams a type of escapism from reality? Is that why we enjoy dreaming? - What is Inception about? What does that have to do with dreams? - The EMT drug / hallucinations - Blue Brain Project

TOPIC The topic I am researching on for my Senior Thesis project is Dreams. Dreams are the succession of images, sound, emotions, sensations, and memories that are created involuntary when one enters into a state of sleep. Usually, dreams occur during REM (Rapid Eye Movement), when brain function is very high. Usually when people enter into a dream and wake up remembering the dream, this means they were having a Lucid Dream, which is when the person is aware they are dreaming. When people donʼt remember their dreams or quote “they didnʼt dream,” that means the dream occurred in another stage of sleep, causing it to be less memorable. Other types of Dream related content can be Déjà vu, Nightmares, Night Terrors, Day Dreaming, False Awakening, Sleep Paralysis, Hypnagogia, Dream recollection, Sleep Walking and Precognition.
Dreams are a connection to the human subconscious. Dreams can range from normal to incredibly surreal and bizarre. Dreams have had many uses throughout the years, depending on the culture.

INTEREST Over the years, the studying of dreams has been through a lot of debate – What does the content mean? How do we dream? What is the function of a dream? What is the purpose of the dream? There has not been any prominent purpose or function of dreams, but some cultures have developed their own ideas of what dreams can represent or do. Shamanism believed that dreams could be controlled and executed, but that they were diagnosed as illnesses. Some cultures feel that since dreams are the visuals of the subconscious, they could predict future events. Other cultures believe that dreams solely provide an outlet for creativity and can be incorporated in many different areas – from art to science to fiction writing. Even though the purpose and function of dreams has been hard to define, one thing one can understand is that dreams are interesting. People are obsessed with decoding and seeing what another person is dreaming about because it has been said that a personʼs dreams reveal their most inner thoughts and personal feelings. People are also fascinated by dream interpretations and what they could represent. Dream interpretation does play on this mystery, ranging in all types of hidden meanings depending on the culture and time.

DESIGN APPROACHES - Creating a social investigation project revolving around what do people dream about, what do people find interesting about dreams and dream recollection. Possible design result could be a website or book.
- I would like my project to incorporate the sensations - or that five senses in relation to dreams because I feel like not only do the images in your head play a very important role in dreaming, but the other sensations that are incorporated. The idea that people can hear sounds, smell things and feel there body moving/reacting to a dream is something that is beyond extrodinary. It adds depth and makes one answer the question of reality entering into your subconscious or unconscious lfe.
- I would like the idea of definitely having sound in my piece because sounds are so memorable when it comes to dreaming, partly because sound is rarely in dreams. Also because sound is experiential and one may wonder how that connects to the reality of things and itʼs possible message.
- Recreating a visual of someoneʼs dream (a dream booth) or a range of dreams so that people can enjoy and become fascincated with. Basically taking someoneʼs first person encounter of their dream, recreating the dream(s) and then putting someone into their dream in third person. This phenomena reminds me of “Inception” or plays on peopleʼs fascination with other peopleʼs dream experiences.

FREUDIAN DREAM TOOLS To further help in interpreting the cryptic images of our dreams, Freud classified the images into the following five processes: 1. Displacement This occurs when the desire for one thing or person is symbolized by something or someone else. 2. Projection This happens when the dreamer propels their own desires and wants onto another person. 3. Symbolization This is characterized when the dreamer始s repressed urges or suppressed desires are acted out metaphorically. 4. Condensation This is the process in which the dreamer hides their feelings or urges by contracting it or underplaying it into a brief dream image or event. Thus the meaning of this dream imagery may not be apparent or obvious. 5. Rationalization This is regarded as the final stage of dreamwork. The dreaming mind organizes an incoherent dream into one that is more comprehensible and logical. This is also known as secondary revision
