Sacred Heart is open after school for all sorts of fun, academic and personal enrichment. Check out the Student Life section of the School website for information about instrumental music and voice lessons, sports clinics and team practices, which are also being held after school.
Enrollment & Registration
To apply for financial aid; you must register for the class first. During the online registration process, choose the desired class and check the box indicated to apply for Specialized After School Program Financial Aid. The box must be checked in order to apply. On the check out page please select “Pay the minimum amount due”. You will be registered for the class and will hear back from the financial aid committee by September 7, 2015. All After School classes must be paid in full by September 10, 2015. The amount of financial aid awarded for one (1) specialized after school class will be based on the percentage of aid a student receives for tuition, available aid, and the demand for classes.
Payment Policies
Registration runs from August 7 - September 10. To register for class, click here. If you’ve previously registered for hot lunch, bus service, summer camp or athletics, you do not need to create a new UltraCamp login to register for After School classes.
Payment by credit card will be accepted. Upon receipt of payment, a confirmation of your registration will be emailed to you.
Scheduling
First time users will need to setup an account. Payment must be made at the time of registration in order to reserve space in the class. (The one exception would be anyone requesting financial aid… see note below)
Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
You will receive an automated confirmation of registered Classes. If you do not receive confirmation that you are registered, you should return to your login page and check your registration information. Remember, you are registered only if you receive confirmation (via email) of your class schedule.
We will contact you only if a class is cancelled due to low enrollment.
Classes begin the week of September 14. There are two class sessions during Fall 2015. Some classes span Session I and II and run for 11 weeks. o Session I: September 14 - October 23 o Session II: October 26 - December 11 After School Classes do not meet on days that school is not in session (10/12, 10/13) or on (10/30, 11/23, 11/24). After School Classes also will not be held 11/12 or 11/13 when Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled. Please check individual class descriptions for the schedule of start and end dates for each class.
Cancellations & Refunds
NOTE: If you received financial aid toward tuition for the 2015-2016 school year, you are eligible to apply for financial aid for one (1) specialized after school class. The deadline to apply for this financial aid is September 4, 2015.

Classes may be cancelled if they do not meet minimum enrollment. If a class is cancelled by the After School Office, you will be notified by email and issued a refund. You will not receive a refund if your child is absent or stops attending a class.
Dismissal/Pick Up
Core After School Program – Stay until 6:00 p.m.
After School Classes are offered in addition to the Core After school Program. Your child(ren) are welcome to stay at school after their class in the Core After School Program. Pickup must take place by 6:00 p.m. through the Portry. If your child’s class does not start until after 4:00 they will stay in the Core Program until their class meets. Children enrolled in After School Classes will report to the Core After School Program at dismissal. Their After School Class teacher will pick them up there at the start time for their class. Children will be dismissed by After School staff at the Rosemont door at the class-end time indicated on the schedule. Students whose parents do not pick them up within 10 minutes of class end-time will join the Core Program and must then be picked up through the Portry.
Snacks

A healthy snack will be provided to every child participating in an After School Class. The cost of the snack is included in the Class fee.

The class will have equal parts of vocal, rhythmic, and imaginative play—and of course, a big dash of silly fun play!

CircEsteem’s unique program gives kids of all ages the chance to shine as center ring stars while learning how to juggle, clown around, spin plates, balance on a rolling globe and walk a tight wire. Every session ends with a fun filled performance where kids get to show off their new-found circus skills for friends and family. This class is perfect for first time or returning students.

Students will delight in making clay animals, pottery, jewelry, tiles and more. So much is possible working with clay. Each student will complete three projects of their choosing. Techniques and instruction using several different approaches towards manipulating this medium will expand any child’s creativity. All pieces are fired to stoneware and use gloss glazes.

The Robotics Academy is a repeatable program where children are placed based on skill and experience. Students can move up a level each time they take the class to take on more advanced concepts.

Each student will build a model rocket from a kit and, weather and other conditions permitting, will get a chance to launch his or her rocket. This class is for anyone who has a hearty curiosity about the health of our planet and feels compelled to take action. There will be leadership opportunities too, as students will have the opportunity to form themselves into a club throughout the course of the session. Students will spend equal time learning about issues and planning meaningful actions to promote greener living and ecological justice.
Teacher: Charlie Watts, H8 Humanities Teacher Time: 3:45-5:00 p.m. Fee: No Charge Middle School Debate at Sacred Heart is entering its fifth season. The debate season runs from mid-September through the championship tournament in mid-March. Tournaments are held in October, December, January, February, and March starting at 8:00am-3:30pm and there is no ability to attend only part of a tournament day. The teams are scheduled to practice two (2) days a week. **Days and starting date will be provided as soon as they are Available.

The class book to be used is The Princeton Review: Cracking the SSAT & the ISEE. The cost of the book will be included in the registration fee. This class is specifically designed for 8th grade students who are preparing to take high school entrance exams. Students are expected to attend class both days!

Photography 101: Camera Fun for Kids

Using iPads and “real” cameras we will take silly portraits of each other, create comic books using photos, make photo collages, and even go on photo scavenger hunts. Additionally, we will begin and close with different games and challenges that teach teamwork and problem solving. Students will take home a personalized Photo Album of their work at the end of the program.

Private guitar lessons offered to beginner through intermediate levels. Beginners will learn the essential open chords and basic strumming patterns, as well as note-reading to build a foundation for music. For those who have previous experience, they will elevate their guitar playing by learning barre chords, basic lead guitar techniques, continued note-reading, tablature, fingerstyle guitar, creative songwriting and more. No matter what level, the students will acquire new skills and techniques by learning songs they love, with focus on rock/pop/folk songs. Students will need their own guitar.

Students will be guided through a yoga practice utilizing asana (physical postures, i.e. downward dog, tree pose, etc.), breathing, games, stories and reflection time. Research has shown that yoga improves balance and coordination and increases flexibility and strength in children’s growing bodies while also helping to develop self-confidence. Science Olympiads
Brownie Girl Scouts
Leaders: Middle School Math & Science Teachers Age: 6th, 7th & 8th Grades Dates: Wednesdays Time: 3:45 – 5:00 p.m. Fee: No Charge The Science Olympiads is a competitive team activity for students in grades 6th – 8th to learn skills covering 23 science and engineeringrelated topics, such as Disease Detectives, Fossils, and some Architectural events.
Scout Leader: Jacqueline Nepola, Kindergarten Assistant Age: 2nd Grade Dates: Wednesdays, starting October 7 Time: 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. Minimum Enrollment: 5; Maximum Enrollment: 20 Students will learn the values of being a Brownie Girl Scout through weekly meetings. We will explore the Girl Scout law through fun activities and crafts. Girl Scouts helps girls to become caring members of their community while creating lasting friendships with their troop members. Membership dues will be discussed at initial meeting.
Team tryouts will be held in September and team selection will be decided by early October. All students interested in trying out will be expected to: 1. Attend two days of event demonstrations held after school (students with conflicts can make arrangements with the Science Olympiad coordinator to acquire necessary prep materials). Dates will be announced in August. 2. Study a prep packet which will be handed out at the event demonstrations. 3. Participate in individual and group testing. A letter with a signup sheet will be sent home with Middle School students in the opening days of school and will need to be returned to Mrs. Galligan, Science Teacher (7th & 8th), prior to the event demonstrations. Wednesday afternoons after school are tentatively scheduled as the meeting day. Some morning before-school practices will also be scheduled to accommodate students’ schedules. There will be a couple of Saturdays in the fall that students will need to be present.
Brownie/Junior Girl Scouts Scout Leader: Keya Graves, SHS Parent Age: 3rd & 4th Grades Dates: Wednesdays, meetings will start in October (start date TBD) Time: 3:30 – 5 p.m. Minimum Enrollment: 5; Maximum Enrollment: 20 Students will learn the values of being a Brownie/Junior Girl Scout through bi-weekly meetings. The Caldecott Book Club Private Voice Lessons
Teacher: Arlene Carlucci, SHS Substitute teacher Age: Kindergarten - 1st Grades Dates: Thursdays, September 17 – October 22 (6 weeks) Time: 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. Fee: $162 + $15 materials fee = $177 Minimum Enrollment: 5; Maximum Enrollment: 20 Using Caldecott Award winning picture books, club members will be introduced to the broad concepts of participating in a book club. At the start of each meeting, Mrs. Carlucci will read with club members from a selection of Caldecott honored picture books. A short discussion on characters, theme, art medium and color are some of the areas that might be discussed. A craft project and special snack that ties in with the book will complete the book club experience. Mrs. Carlucci has been involved in a Mother/ Daughter Book Club with her own daughters since 1996. Her book club was even featured in the New York Times Magazine! She is passionate about children’s books and is excited to share that enthusiasm with your child!

Learn about advanced mechanical and software design, loops, conditional statements, problem solving and teamwork skills. Work in small groups, program and build your robot and rise to the challenge! Control the robot to avoid obstacles, pick up, carry objects and more. Projects are structured so that students work in an openended, investigative environment while having fun. Students who have not taken Robotics are encouraged to sign up, we will help get you up to speed!

She established the Boulanger ensemble, which is dedicated to performing a lecture/recital of the lives and music of Lili and Nadia Boulanger. Ms. Witos has taught for many years in Chicago and on the North Shore. She is on the faculty of the Music Institute of Chicago, has been a faculty member at the DePaul University Community Music School, and has taught in London, England. She has written articles for Keyboard Companion magazine and frequently serves as an adjudicator for contests in the Chicago area. A mandatory Parent Orientation for all students new to SHS after school piano program. The Suzuki method is by far the most effective approach for nurturing and developing the musical ability of a child from a very young age. Based on Suzuki's "mother language" philosophy, very young children learn to play the piano through their senses after listening to recordings and observing how other children learn. A cooperative relationship between teacher, parent and student is essential for a successful learning process. A parent is expected to be present at the child's lesson and receive training as a practice partner to the child.

Beginners will learn the essential open chords and basic strumming patterns, as well as note-reading to build a foundation for music. For those who have previous experience, they will elevate their guitar playing by learning barre chords, basic lead guitar techniques, continued note-reading, tablature, fingerstyle guitar, creative songwriting and more. In this class students will act out and create different movement based scenarios and games. They will then be given a “mission” they must all work together to complete. Examples include the students being stuck on a deserted island and having to use nearby supplies and toys to find or craft a way home; coming to school, finding all the adults missing, and having to keep the school still running; or even silly ones like trying to find the “lost unicorn” of Sacred Heart Woods through a scavenger hunt and obstacle course. By engaging in high-energy play and imagination, students will work together to complete their “missions” and practice important socialemotional skills such as teamwork, problem solving, and determination.

Beginners learn the fundamentals of the game. Experienced players learn essential strategies and tactics necessary for successful, winning chess. Our instructor, Grand Master Vladimir Georgiev, has years of experience teaching scholastic chess to beginners, intermediates, and experts. He has coached a Woman World Champion, Antoaneta Stefanova, and currently coaches a number of students who qualify for the Youth World Chess Championship. He uses an entertaining and challenging question and answer format to encourage children to participate and form their own ideas. Club members will also have memberships to an online chess school, filled with lessons, puzzles, and chess games.
