What is security?
The protection of personnel, customer and assets from violence and theft. 1.2
Why is security important?
Lapses in security places personnel, customers, assets, staff and property at risk. Any responsible employer will wish to take all reasonable steps to protect the lives of their staff, customers and to protect its assets. With the increasing serious and unanticipated security incidents recently this has also placed the provision of assistance at risk, with the danger that personnel, customers and assets, when assistance is needed in an emergency an overstretched team may be curtailed. If personnel, customers and staff are aware of how to become more secure, they are able to do a more effective job in both awareness, prevention and bringing assistance to those who need it. 1.3
Approaches to security
Acceptance
Traditionally, personnel, customers and organisation’s have relied upon their security from the police and official security firms. This is still the favoured approach where possible. It has now become apparent that if the local population can become more aware of how to pre-protect their personnel, customers and organisation’s internally they could be of more assistance in alerting the official organisation of any suspicious behaviour. This approach is often known as the “acceptance approach”, since it depends on acceptance by the company in terms of some levels of responsibility. The acceptance approach is usually not enough on its own. Every society contains some people who resort to crime, and personnel, customers, assets, staff and property may be targeted by criminals.

Protection
Common protection measures which include gates, guards, locks, alarms and safes are not enough to be relied on anymore. Other protection measures are decided on according to the threat in each specific context and we are now in a new paradigm when information on the wider context will assist the working general public to become more vigilant. There may be some threats to personnel, customers and assets, organisations which do not arise from the local community at all. These may include attacks from terrorist groups, whose decision-makers may be distant or even in a different country, orchestrating violence against personnel, customers and assets, and other organisations for political reasons. If so, protection measures will need to take these threats into account and a higher degree of protection is necessary if the work is to continue. In this case, managers will usually consider whether the work should stop, either temporarily or permanently. 1.5
Deterrence vs Awareness
Deterrence is a further security approach used by some organisations, notably the police and the military. They deter attack by threatening retaliation against anyone who attacks them. This is not an option available to personnel, customers, localised assets and organisations, whose principles forbid them to attack anyone, or to threaten attack. The sole possible exception is when personnel, customers and organisation’s can become aware through training to heighten their levels of awareness. 1.6
Risk = Threat x Vulnerability
You may be able to do nothing about the level of threat around you, but you can probably do a great deal to reduce your level of vulnerability in two main ways: Getting into an accident for instance:
Reducing the chances of an incident happening (e.g. by driving slowly, improving locks, or introducing a neighbourhood watch system) Reducing the impact of an incident (e.g. by wearing seatbelts, or limiting the amount of cash held in the safe)

Personnel, customers, assets and space: The access and freedom for personnel, customers, to assess and meet personnel, customer’s needs. Security: The protection of personnel, customers and assets from violence and theft. Security policy: A short document approved by the top management and board of trustees of a personnel, customers and assets, organisation, setting out the organisations overall approach and principles in relation to security management. Security manual: A handbook giving generic security procedures to be applied by all staff, but not including location-specific procedures. (The handbook may be a relatively long document.) Security plan: A short document giving location-specific security information and procedures that do not feature in the security manual. A separate security plan is produced for a single or multiple location. Security incident: An event which threatens personnel, customers, assets or staff with violence or theft, or results in actual violence or theft against them.

Foundation course is suitable for training Line Managers, Supervisors or Administrators, Retail Counter staff, Field Staff, Voluntary Staff. Introduction and Course Overview You will spend the first part of the day getting to know participants and discussing what will take place during the workshop. Students will also have an opportunity to identify their personal learning objectives. Introduction to Private Security Private security is provided to clients for a fee, and except in special circumstances, has its jurisdiction limited to the property owned by the client. Rather than service provided in the interests of the public, security is provided to protect the interests of the client. Details of these aspects will be covered and discussed. Duties and Responsibilities Security Awareness/Security Managers protect people, property and information. This session is designed to provide an overview of the principal duties and responsibilities involved in these security requirements. Conduct and Professionalism A Security Awareness/Security Manager is expected to project an image of professionalism at all times. During the course of his/her duties, a Security Awareness/Security Manager will often be visible to, and interact with, a variety of persons, including customers, visitors, employees, tenants, and the general public. This session will review the general personal qualities and human relations skills required of a Security Awareness/Security Manager in performing his/her duties.

Access Control and Alarms Security Awareness/Security Managers control movement of personnel and materials in, out of, or within a facility that are essential to normal operations, and prevent unauthorised access and egress. Advanced Traffic Control and Management Security Guards must be able to direct traffic. This session will cover the correct manner by which to direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic and the proper use of hand signals. Advanced health and safety aspects of these duties and how to look at the contents of vehicles and their security implication. Being in charge and Implementing responses to immediate crisis This session will look at the responsibilities for security team leaders when a situation arises. Dealing with situation management, design and understanding of plans and training individuals to act in the appropriate manner. Information gathering and sharing This session will illustrate the critical need for sharing information and intelligence. It will detail steps taken to enhance information sharing projects and initiatives with emphasis on a prevention and deterrence approach. The instructor will discuss the role of security guards in that endeavor. Information sharing initiatives will be identified and communication avenues will be addressed to ensure communication paths are multi-directional. Additional discussion will focus on current information and intelligence collection efforts within this state as well as nationally. While providing an overview, it will distinguish the difference between information and intelligence and how the security guard industry can support these efforts and identify various collection methods, programs and initiatives Labour Disputes A great deal of the work of many security guards is carried out in or about the workplace of the client’s employees. In performing these duties, therefore, it is vital that a security guard be aware of the essential features of the employer-employee relationship and their implications for the security guard’s work. In this session, the general principles of labour-management relations that are relevant to a security guard’s work, and the role and responsibilities of a security guard during industrial disputes are reviewed. Advanced level health and safety planning and implementation Using knowledge of the Law and application of Health & Safety issues there will be an opportunity to develop effective strategic planning for onsite delivery. Using role plays to develop awareness of what might occur operationally and minimising the impact of any events.
