Patterns

Energy can be transferred, but never destroyed. The ones who get the most out of a Dickinson education are those who put the most in. Our students go beyond the traditional lecture on global warming in favor of a round-trip ticket to the Arctic Circle. They observe high-level NATO conference calls as part of our U.S. Army War College partnership. They are Fulbright scholars, published authors, and even U.S. Supreme Court Justices. By holding themselves to the highest of standards, our students, alumni, and faculty have been able to set all new ones of their own. Check out dson.co/dsonedge to see how we’re channeling our energy to drive us forward.

Language is a code of choreographed symbols. It takes more than vocabulary to comprehend a concept. It takes understanding to relate lessons to the world we live in. Dickinson offers a versatile liberal-arts education that empowers students to not only recognize opportunities, but also act on them. When you understand the way the world is connected and the collaborative spirit needed for progress, you’ll always be ready to make an impact.

A body in motion is boundless. Whether racing toward the ribbon at an NCAA meet or darting to catch a train at Nagoya Station, Dickinsonians are ever in motion. In fact, 56 percent of the class of 2014 studied off campus, including 44 percent of science majors and more than 40 percent of athletes. When they are not training or traveling, they are interning, researching and fully immersing, filling their toolkits with the skills to excel.

30 separate instruments can comprise a single concerto. Education isn’t a solo performance. It’s a composition. We focus on melding different philosophies and approaches to deliver a complete learning experience. Students not only learn about the Atlantic Slave Trade—they also see how African art was preserved in plantation communities. In a Sustainability Connections course, they see how everything from economics to Thoreau’s Walden has an impact on the environment. This multifaceted approach ensures every student, professor, program, and department works together in harmony. Visit dickinson.edu/academics to learn more.

Shared experiences result in more vivid memory recall. College is an incredibly personal journey—one that’s shared with mentors, friends, naysayers, and champions. Students share their newest indie rock playlists in a residence hall, then head to class together to learn about the physiological differences of a musician’s brain. Whether it’s tossing a glow-in-the-dark Frisbee or exploring the phosphorescent chemicals inside of it, we are constantly showing the world that we are stronger together.

The hand contains 1,300 nerve receptors per square inch. We put each one of them into action to improve the sustainability of our campus, our community, and our world. In Kaufman Hall, students from all different majors come to our greenhouse to get their hands dirty— literally. From the dining-services employees who team up with students to turn food waste into nutrient-rich compost, to the anthropology majors studying evolution’s impact on sustainability, and our art majors who are experimenting with recycled materials—here each student, professor, and staff member is focused on turning “green” into a verb.
