Spring Commencement 2020
SATURDAY, MAY 16 10 A.M.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Class of 2020, Congratulations on your graduation from Dickinson State University! College graduation is always a substantial accomplishment, so you should be proud of your work. That is even more true this year, when much of your coursework switched mid-semester from face-to-face delivery to online formats. We are proud of the way you did not let this discourage you, but instead kept working toward this important day. Even this day is different, because your graduation itself is online. Interestingly, yours is the 100th spring graduation at Dickinson State. It is also the very first online graduation. Though that makes it unique, we are hoping this one is the last in this format. Indeed, please remember that we would love to have you participate in our December 2020 or May 2021 graduations so you can enjoy the traditional graduation experience you worked so hard for. Our unusual format does not make your graduation any less special. As graduation always is, this is the highlight day of the DSU year. This is also the day that you transition from being a DSU student to a DSU alum. We hope you will continue to be active at DSU and we hope to see you often. We wish you the best as you pursue the career for which DSU has prepared you. Hawks (Like You) Are Up!

OUTSTANDING GRADUATE
KARISSA BOHN Karissa Bohn is the daughter of Pat and Dana Bohn of Mandan, ND. She is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and minors in Biology and Leadership. Bohn decided to follow the footsteps of her siblings, Meyer and Kayla, as well as her father by attending Dickinson State University. Bohn’s college career was dedicated to two main areas at Dickinson State. The first being within her major, the Department of Natural Sciences. She served as a research assistant with the department in which she conducted photosynthetic based research on crop and range land. She assisted the professors in the labs as well as communicated and presented the data at the EPSCoR Annual Conference. Bohn served with the Science Club for 4 years which included serving as the Vice President during the 2018-2019 academic year in which she helped coordinate events, such as the annual plant sale, seed sale, and recycling drive. She served as an Event Leader with the Science Olympiad for the last three years as well as the Discovery Dome her sophomore year. During the summers of 2018 and 2019, she worked with the USDA Forest Service. Since January, she has been working with Baranko Brothers Environmental as an Environmental Scientist. The other area in which Bohn thrived was within the Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program. Bohn excelled quickly. She became a Student Assistant Director during the second semester of her freshman year, a title she held up until graduation. She mentored fellow honor students as well as coordinated events and meetings for the students involved in the TRHLP. Bohn was instrumental in planning fundraisers, such as the Hawk Walk, Escape Room, Brave the Shave, as well as the group’s silent auctions during the Blue Hawk football season. Often the one handing out the awards to her fellow classmates, Bohn received the TRHLP Female Freshman of the Year Award. During her time as a Blue Hawk, she received multiple scholarships: North Dakota Space Grant Consortium Scholarship, North Dakota Academic Scholarship, DSU Blue Hawk Talon Waiver, as well as the DSU Heritage Foundation’s Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Scholarship. Bohn sees herself staying in western North Dakota due to her love of conservation, reclamation and remediation. She has accepted a full-time position with Baranko Brothers Environmental. In time, she would like to pursue a master’s degree in Environmental Policy or Reclamation. “I am a great example of a Hawk taking full flight during my college career.” DICKINSON STATE UNIVERSITY

OUTSTANDING GRADUATE
SUZANNA MOBERG Suzanna Moberg, daughter of Kevin and Susan Moberg, is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in English Education. Raised in Dickinson where both of her parents work in education, it only seemed natural that Suzanna would attend her hometown college. During her time at Dickinson State University, Suzanna was involved in many organizations on campus as well as in the community. She served all four years on Student Senate and was our Student Body President for two terms. During her time as Student Body President, Moberg helped lower technology fees for students, revitalize the Blue Hawk Hub, as well as served as a voice for this virtual commencement ceremony. This leadership role led to serving on various committees, such as President’s Cabinet and the Academic Affairs Task Force. She participated in chorale and chamber choir from 2016-2019 during which she traveled with the group to New York City to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2017 and 2019. In addition, she performed the national anthem either as a solo, duet, or trio with her sisters at many of the athletic events, community events, as well as for the American Legion. Moberg’s love and devotion to her faith is evident. Since 2016, she has spent her summer months working for Badlands Ministries. Teaching Bible studies, designing the curriculum, and supervising the camp staff were some of the many duties she was given. In addition, Moberg served as a confirmation mentor with St. John’s Lutheran Church from 2017-2019. The many honors Moberg has received during her college career include being named the 2018 Homecoming Queen, the Outstanding Student in Education for the North Dakota Association of Colleges for Teacher Education in 2020, as well as being selected as a student speaker at this Commencement ceremony. Perhaps Moberg will be most remembered for her time as a co-host of the weekly Hawk Talk show as well as the Blue Hawk Gameday during some of the home athletic events. Moberg will be packing her bags this summer and embarking on a new journey. She has accepted a position as an English teacher at Hunters Lane High School in Nashville, Tennessee. Down the road, Moberg would like to pursue a graduate degree so that she can one day become a college professor. “I couldn’t be prouder to say that I’m a Dickinson State Blue Hawk, and I fully believe that ‘Hawks are up!’” DICKINSON STATE UNIVERSITY

ACADEMIC ATTIRE HISTORY Academic regalia generally consist of cap, gown, and hood worn on formal occasions at institutions of higher learning. It originated in the medieval period when the vast majority of scholars were of the clergy. The gown evolved from what most likely was the cape of the clergy. The gown was originally black, but color was introduced as institutions left ecclesiastical control. The hood originated as the skull cap worn by the clergy to protect their heads from the elements. The hood served a three-fold purpose: head covering, shoulder cap, and bag for alms. King's College, now known as Columbia University, was established in 1754 and imported many British regulations for academic dress. The end of the 19th century found widespread use of academic dress in the United States. It is estimated that 95 percent of the colleges and universities abide by the intercollegiate code which oversees academic dress.
STYLES AND COLORS The bachelor's gown is worn closed and is distinguished by its pointed sleeves. A master's gown is designed to be worn closed with long, crescent shaped sleeves. The doctoral gown may be worn open or closed with velvet panels down the front and three bars on the round, bell-shaped sleeves. The color of the velvet may be distinctive of the field of study to which the degrees pertain. The Dark Blue of the Doctor of Philosophy degree is predominant but other representative degree colors are distinguished in the following manner: Arts, Letters, Humanities — White Business — Drab Economics — Copper Education — Light Blue Fine Arts — Brown Law — Purple Library Science — Lemon Music — Pink Nursing — Apricot Physical Education — Sage Green Public Administration — Peacock Blue Science — Golden Yellow Social Work — Citron Theology — Scarlet The most distinguishing feature of the academic attire is the hood. The size and shape of the hood designates not only the college degree of the wearer but also the university he or she attended. The master's hood is three and one-half feet in length, while the doctoral hood is rounded and measures four feet in length. Hoods are lined with the official colors of the institution conferring the degree. The binding around the hood is velvet with the color indicative of the major field of study. Caps are normally black with the most common the four-point mortarboard. Tassels are worn over the left front quarter after a degree has been conferred. Students graduating with honors from Dickinson State University are distinguished with gold honor cords. Only students earning bachelor degrees may receive honor status. DICKINSON STATE UNIVERSITY

CANE OF LEADERSHIP The Cane of Leadership was started back in 2001 by the DSU Alumni Association as a historical time piece to list the accomplishments of each academic year with a new ribbon. Prior to 2001, the graduating classes had a new metal ring indicating that year. That cane is filled with rings from every year dating back to 1926. THE MACE In medieval times the mace was often carried by kings or their sergeantat-arms into battle where it was used as a weapon to protect the king. Centuries later, as armor became stronger, the use of the mace was phased out as a weapon. It was used instead during ceremonial occasions to denote authority in governmental, legislative, church and academic settings. Universities have also used the mace to denote authority, and it is carried in front of the academic procession during each commencement ceremony.
The Dickinson State University mace is carried by Dr. Debora Dragseth, Professor of Business for the School of Business and Entrepreneurship. Dr. Dragseth began her long and distinguished teaching career at DSU in 1989. Dr. Dragseth earned the honor of carrying the mace by virtue of being the senior member of Dickinson State University faculty.
