September 2017 DR. VARNEY PARTICIPATES IN PANEL DISCUSSION TO BE AIRED ON C-SPAN Dr. Frank Varney, associate professor of history at Dickinson State University, participated in a panel discussion alongside several other Civil War historians while he was in Virginia this summer during the Gettysburg Anniversary weekend. “The topic of the panel was ‘Why we study history,’” said Varney. “Mostly we discussed how we got interested in writing, and why we chose the subjects we chose. It was fun!” The panel discussion will be aired on C-SPAN during the first weekend in September in the Civil War slot at 6 p.m. ET Saturday on C-SPAN 3 along with several other book talks. These programs are expected to air back-to-back during this time slot for three to four weeks. The dates and times of these airings are subject to change. Please refer to the schedule on the middle-right of C-SPAN’s home page at www.c-span.org/history. Once the programs debut they will be archived online and available on the Civil War page at www.c-span.org/series/?theCivilWar. DICKINSON STATE RANKS 8TH ON NATIONAL LIST OF COLLEGES WITH BEST ECONOMIC MOBILITY A recent study conducted by Zippia places DSU 8th in the nation and first in North Dakota for best colleges for economic mobility. Zippia research determined which schools give their students the best chance of moving up the economic ladder in each state. Dickinson State topped the list in North Dakota for giving students the best opportunity to move from a low income bracket to the top. “The value of a school’s education isn’t only measured by how much its graduates earn, but by how much credit the college can honestly take for shaping its students’ career outcomes,” said Zippia Content Manager David Luther, who conducted the nationwide high education study. “More than any other school in the state, Dickinson consistently elevates the greatest percentage of its students from the lowest income bracket to the top.”
DIGITAL YEARBOOKS RELEASED TO KICK-OFF DSU CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION In celebration of 100 years of excellence in education, nearly 80 years of Dickinson State University yearbooks will be released as part of the university’s Centennial Celebration. Funny fashions and timeless memories – yearbooks are a treasure trove of nostalgia. The assortment of Prairie Smoke yearbooks includes 72 editions that will be released weekly throughout 2017 and 2018. The first yearbook was released Tuesday, July 11, 2017. Currently published yearbooks and a full release schedule can be viewed at www.dickinsonstate.edu/yearbooks. These digital copies can also be searched and shared socially. CHAMPION ON THE FIELD AND IN THE CLASSROOM: DSU GRAD EMBRACES OPPORTUNITY AND ACHIEVES HIS GOALS Discipline, determination and dedication describe 2017 Dickinson State University graduate Ty Malone. The DSU alumnus successfully completed a triple major in finance and business administration and human resource management while competing as a member of the Blue Hawk track and field team. Along with his academic and athletic commitments, the Robertson, Wyoming, native is also the father of a 4-year-old son.

He was a member of the Sigma Beta Delta Honor Society, was involved in DSU’s Business Club and worked locally to build experience in his field of study. “Attending DSU and moving to North Dakota was a great decision,” he said. “I learned a lot from the places I worked, like Southwest Grain, which has helped build my career.” Malone is currently completing an internship at the Trona Mine in Green River, Wyoming, with Tronox Limited. “I haven’t been at my internship long but I enjoy applying what I have learned in school to real-world problems,” said Malone. “It is also fun seeing so many different parts of the finance and accounting departments so I’m getting a pretty well rounded perspective of the mine which is an amazing opportunity.” In August, he will be pursuing a master’s degree in finance at the University of Utah. “My long-term goals are to finish grad school then find a job, hopefully in Wyoming, or start in the Salt Lake area then move back to Wyoming. I’d prefer to work in finance, but I’m keeping my options open as to what industry I would work in.” “My time at DSU means a lot to me, as it helped me develop life skills, and a drive to constantly better myself. Without the support and encouragement of the faculty, staff, coaches, and other students I would not be where I am today, academically or professionally.”
“Being in college with a kid is definitely challenging,” said Malone. “You not only have your own things that need to be done like studying, papers and assignments, but you have all of their stuff as well. So it is definitely a juggling act when you add track into the mix. You’re taking your kid to daycare before class, reading to them, going to the park so they play while you read for class… I couldn’t have done it without my wife and I can’t thank her enough for her working and helping support us, and for all she did for both of us.” DSU provided Malone the opportunity to engage in learning and competition while balancing his personal responsibilities. DSU alumnus Jim Dolezal (’87), was Malone’s high school track coach and inspiration for Malone to consider DSU. “I’ve been in sports for most of my life and the opportunity to compete for a nationally-competitive program is an opportunity I didn’t want to pass up,” said Malone. “Beyond competing, it was an experience that helped me build life-skills, develop my character and become a better person.” Malone competed as a thrower for the DSU track and field team, participating in shot put, hammer, discus and weight throw events, helping his team win the conference each year he participated. He was also honored as the 2016 and 2017 Indoor and Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. “It was rewarding to put in all the extra work and achieve success. It was also rewarding to build great friendships along the way that help make college a great experience,” said Malone. “At the same time all the extra work is challenging, and especially for me I had to take time away from my wife and kid to put in the extra time or during track meets. It definitely wasn’t easy but competing and being a conference champion is something not many people get to achieve.”

“The scores of our graduates speak to the quality of DSU’s business program, our students and the University as a whole,” said Gruhlke, who teaches the capstone course for senior business majors. “We are delighted this year that four of our students scored in the top 10 percent nationally.” Since introducing the ETS Exit Exam as an assessment measure 10 years ago, the Department of Business and Management has had 104 students score in the top 10 percentile, representing nearly 9 percent of business graduates per year. Not only did Malone find athletic success at DSU, he also excelled in academics and recently finished in the top 1 percentile nationally in the Educational Testing Services (ETS) business exam given to graduating seniors. “Scoring in the top 1 percent nationally is a wonderful accomplishment,” according to Holly Gruhlke, chair of the Department of Business and Management at DSU. “As a department we are extremely proud that our students can reach this level of achievement, especially when one considers that comparative universities include programs at schools such as Ball State, Xavier University and Texas A&M.”

BIOLOGY FACULTY AT DSU ATTEND GENOME CONSORTIUM FOR ACTIVE TEACHING WORKSHOP This summer Dickinson State University faculty members Dr. Joshua Steffan, assistant professor of agriculture and biology, and Dr. Craig Whippo, associate professor of biology, attended a workshop on next generation DNA sequencing and active learning sponsored by the National Science Foundation. During the workshop, Drs. Steffan and Whippo received handson training in DNA metagenomic bioinformatics analysis and explored ways to integrate NextGen sequencing into their undergraduate classes. “Metagenomics is becoming increasingly important in the study of microbiology and genetics because it helps us understand microbial diversity and communities,” said Dr. Whippo. “This technology will become increasingly important in medicine, agriculture, and environmental monitoring and remediation.” Drs. Steffan and Whippo were two of approximately 25 individuals selected to attend the workshop nationwide. Their research involves determining how plants change the overall soil microbial community in response to soil salinity, which affects an estimated 5.8 million acres in North Dakota. This project is funded through the INBRE grant, which is an award granted to foster undergraduate student research involvement and infrastructure improvements at four-year primarily undergraduate institutions. Over the past four years, Steffan and Whippo have received a collective $435,000 for undergraduate research opportunities. Through their participation in this workshop, they and their students are granted access to a supercomputer required for the large amount of computational analysis needed for their research project.
