The DSTC Savage8 f i n ished th e ir '49 g rid iro n season with a 25 to 13 v ic tory over Montana East ern college at B illin g s Friday, Nov. 11. This Victory brought to a close what has been a successfu l season fo r the lo c a l college g rid iro n g la d ia to rs . I t was a tough schedule and the Savages won 5 o f the 8 game8 they played. The three defeats suffered by the lo c a l boys were to teams with superior numbers and weight. Coaches H. J. Weinbergen and Loy Young can look forward to next y e a r’ s fo o tb a ll season w ith s a t is fa c t io n . The Savages lose only 5 men from th is y e a r’ s squad. This fa c t, plus the experience gained th is year by some o f the promising newcomers and a few more who w i l l be e l i g i b le next year, should ce rta in ly give Dickinson the chance i t has long waited fo r . For the past years Dickinsop State Teachers College has been one o f the weak er teams in the NDIAC fo o tb a ll race but i t looks as though the papooses have developed into b ig strong braves who are ready to sta rt occupying the top of theconference. I t has been a good many years since the lo c a l school has won the fo o tb a ll championship but maybe next year w i l l be the year. One very noticeable thing about the Savages was the way they came on at the close o f the season. They became stronger as each week passed. A fte r lo sin g the f i r s t game to Spearfish by a score o f 39 to 6 the Savages bounced back and defeated Bismarck 40 to 0. The fo llo w in g week found the lo ca ls defeating M ayville 26 to 7 in a sad homecoming climax fo r M ayville. Then came the season’ s b ig game. I t was the DSTC homecoming week and the opposition was the b ig , strong, and h ig h ly pu blicised Vikings from the V a lle y City Teacheas C o llege. A fte r leading fo r three periods, the Savages f i n a l l y were downed and out-manned as V alley City slipped out o f Dickinson with a 21 to 13 victo ry . The next week the Savages played host to Herb Parker and his powerful Minot Beavers with Wes Luther. In a game played in 20 degree weather and what oould have been called the 'I c e Bowl*, Minot c a p italised on some sloppy playing by the lo c a ls and won 14 to 0. This was too much fo r the Savages so they took i t out on the Bottineau School o f Forestry 31 to 0 in a free scoring game here. Picking up speed and determination the Savages then met the Rapid City Miners The DSTC boys were rude enough and set Rapid City back to South Dakota smart ing under a 25 to 6 lic k in g . Then came the season fin a l at B illin g s and the Savages wrapped th is victo ry up 25 to 13 and packed th e ir moleskins away fo r another year.
