Therapeutic Winter Garden in Eymir aims to help users gain a self-understanding through stimulating perception. It is designed as a relaxing home for stressful urban people where they can rejuvenate within nature. The sensual experience offers a mental, emotional healing and eventually leads to a physical one. Intersecting boxes in linear axis create a courtyard at the center. Each of these boxes is purposed with a diverse sense by utilizing nature. Since Ankara is famous for its black frosts, evergreen plants are selected. Firethorns at the entrance provides a warm welcome, invites visitors in. A linden tree which evokes the sense of peace within the soul is placed in the very simple Zen-like courtyard. Guest room is rather separated
from the garden and faces the existing pine forest becoming a seclusion area. The forest also provides privacy for the room. Terrace on the other hand, like the reception room offers exceptional views from the Eymir lake which one of the few areas in Ankara that is not yet touched by shopping malls or huge residential blocks. Simplicity and transparency were fundamental to avoid any interruption that can prevent communing with nature. Natural building materials are also preferred in order to create a cozy feeling. Steel framed light-weight structure is lifted from the ground to provide a ventilation beneath. Roof vents on the north-east side provide air circulation in summer to prevent overheating.

Atakule was designed to be distinctive in the first place unlike most landmarks. It was the first shopping center of the city and the second rotated tower in the world when constructed. The importance of the building changed the character of the site. When examined thoroughly, certain changes can be observed in last 50 years. 50 years ago, it is seen that the roads are the dominant element of the site. They look randomly shaped in the middle of nowhere. There are only wild trees and very few buildings -one of those being American Social Facility in where Atakule will be located later on-. Nothing is quite organized yet. With Botanic Park, natural environment is re-formed and polished, yet weak. In years, as the trees grow, the park turns into an individual green space with the
provided enclosure. Surely, being a depression area helps achieving that. There is a gradual change in residential buildings which gathers acceleration after the construction of Atakule. Finally in 1999, the roads that once shaped the housing are no longer the main characteristic of the area. Buildings(Residential and Commercial) dominate the entire region. The population increase is clear. Contemporary conditions are, however, no less important than the historical character of the site. Now, having the landmark of the city -Atakule and inseparably Botanic Park- and a lot of diplomatic/ governmental buildings, the area is an attraction center, even without the shopping mall.

Main idea is to revive traces of time, one of which is entirely destroyed(Social Facility), one damaged(Greenhouse), one abandoned(Atakule itself). Atakule maintains its function. The closed part is used for more formal events as the rotating terrace serves public for viewing cityscape at highest level. The destroyed American Social Facility is revived as a multinational area. The area is initially for other nations’ organizations, however, locals of the neighbourhood can spend their time there. The multifunctionality is completed with glass facade and sliding structure, so that the space allows landscape to flow through and adapts to unsettled weather conditions of Ankara. The Green House is converted into an exhibition hall with an architectural touch. The top provides an

individual experience at the lowest level of the park. Between these areas, a pathway offers a sensational journey and eventually connects to the original pathway of the Botanic Park. The fountain pool on the facade of the old mall is brought back to the site. It now works as a sound barrier between the city and the peaceful silence of the Botanic Park and is surrounded by decorative trees. The pathway continues with a dramatic road. Long trees with huge shadows create suffocating feeling that contrast with the relaxation of a bright open view that follows up. The scent of the pine forest surrounds as you walk on trees via the bridge. The silent area to sit back, read and enjoy your morning coffee and the playground with appropriately changing slopes complete the variety of activities in the area.

2nd year Spring Semester Student Housing:Living and Working in minimal means Coordinator: Ä°nci Basa
A small living unit of 3,66 x 5,92 m is designed for a student. As it consists of living room, kitchenette, bath room and study room, both furnitures and spaces needed to double-function; therefore, each furniture is designed especially for this project like the bedsofa, table-seat and cabinet-dining table. For an ergonomically apt living environment, anthropometric dimensions had to be taken into account at each step of the design to provide maximum comfort in minimum space. To allow the student easily access the fresh air for her daily activities, porch and terrace are required. The problem of vertical circulation is solved through creating mezzanine floors and utilizing the spaces below them.

A vocational school on metal technology for over a hundred people of ages 14-18 serves the entire community. Prothesis production takes place at the center. Theoretical education occurs at top floor and data are computerized there, too. Machinery work is done at the basement, finally, compatibiliy tests are at the ground level. Cafeteria, exhibition hall and offices are located at the back. Terraced courtyards allow transition and connection all through the site along with the pathways. Dormitories, staff housing and social hubs such as cafeteria and library are equally distributed around the atelier.

Sports center is a rehabilitation center for the handicapped that offers water therapy and free standing exercises to improve muscle strength. Cafeteria of the hub also connects to the housing with a bridge that is another interaction area. Mixed housing scheme maximizes the interaction possibilities. It consists of 1, 3 and 10-person units. Each unit has a roof terrace that is open for everyone. That allows a variety of activies or uses to take place at the same time.

3rd year Fall Semester Reconsidering Urban Assets of Ankara Architecture that Heals: Saraçoğlu Quarter An Extension to Namık Kemal Primary School

Our society is now squeezed into shopping malls, feeling lonely in crowds, afraid of communicating with one another, has forgotten the sense of neighbourhood which needs to be reconsidered for the sake of the society. In addition, we are becoming distant from arts day by day. Due to its location Saraçoğlu can heal the city. Despite being at the center, it has a healing tranquil spirit. Using its location and art as tools social healing can be achieved.

Art heals, changes a person’s psychology, physiology and attitude. It lessens the stress caused by the urban life we have. Either by bringing us together, making us feel more integrated or on our own, having time for ourselves and healing at a spiritual level, art is the tool for the betterment of society.
By turning SaraçoÄ&#x;lu houses into art houses and thus, revitalizing the quarter at the very heart of the capital, healing is aimed to be not only in the district but at a higher level. The concept of giving back also helps healing the society. Houses are occupied by economically deficient artists and in return, they teach

what they know, show what they do or experiment together. The quarter is once more hand in hands, this time including the city. Thereby, community will rise above the problems caused by the urbanisation as a whole.
Saraçoğlu is much greener and relaxing compared to the rest of Kızılay. To permeate this sense into Kızılay, continuity of greenery must be provided. For this, green axis through Ankara and old proposal is taken into account.

Uniqueness of SaraçoÄ&#x;lu Quarter comes from its streets: the neighbourhood relations and the culture it developed. Therefore, the streets must be revived as lively as they were.

The center is surrounded by the Namık Kemal Primary School and a variety of art houses that serve citizens all the time. Since it is an extension of the school for hands on lectures and art education, it is used by students in daytime. Yet, it is open to public for workshops in other times. All workshops are arranged by occupants of the Quarter. Site is accesible from Güvenpark/Kumrular Street through an axis that eventually connects to Necatibey Street. The axis splits the complex in two parts as in the earlier model of the Saraçoğlu project. More importantly, the axis acts as an extension of İzmir Street, which has a high artistic potential with many theatres, courses and craftshops. By completing the existing art axis connection with the city is strengthened.

While trying to bring back the street life of the quarter, a small scale city model is employed. The pathways/ streets take the lead to create an urban culture. Main buildings/areas define districts; playground for children, theoretical and hands-on education.
