Introduction In the tradition of painting interiors there are many different ways of approaching the subject, from the studies of light and perspective in Vermeer and the Danish School of the late 19C, to the exacting records of rooms in watercolour that have always been with us. For me a picture of an interior is a study in light and composition in the same way that the best examples of Still Life are always an exploration of the way in which light falls onto objects. I am less interested in recording every item in a room than in finding an unexpected configuration of light and shadow and exploring atmosphere. The challenge is to enter a room and try to find the picture that might be there. I like to find interiors that have not been touched for many years, which is why I have tended to concentrate on the interiors of palaces. The owners or trustees always try to preserve what there is and keep the integrity of the rooms. This is certainly true of the palaces in St. Petersburg, Venice and Rajasthan which with one or two exceptions form the major part of this exhibition. There is, for me, an irresistible fascination in discovering interiors that remain unchanged giving, as it were, a true sense of the past.
