DEVELOPMENT APPLICATIONS COASTAL AREAS

SECOND ROW COASTAL PROPERTIES

INLAND AREAS

Many projects along coastal areas have unsuitable conditions for swimming, such as rough sea, rocks, cliffs, strong currents, jellyfish, sharks or dark sand beaches. Crystal Lagoons’ technology solves the problem by providing a pristine water body that allows for the enjoyment of various water sports.

There are many coastal areas in the world that attract a lot of tourists, and which already have their sea fronts completely developed. Crystal Lagoons brings the idyllic beach life behind first row developments, thus creating successful projects on property with little or no previous commercial value.

Beach projects can be situated in previously unimagined areas, such as urban areas, with little attraction for real estate and tourist developments. Crystal Lagoons allows people to practice and enjoy water recreational sports and activities in front of their homes.

URBAN AREAS

FLOATING LAGOONS

PUBLIC CITY PARKS

Residential real estate projects located within cities are not only revolutionizing the real estate market, but also allows people of every socioeconomic segment to have access to prime beach life.

There are more than 50 million water bodies that are not used for recreational purposes due to poor water quality. The new concept of Floating Crystal Lagoons, applies our revolutionary water treatment technology to floating lagoon structures wich are located within larger water bodies. These create new and innovative recreational bathing areas, and generate aggregate value to the project without the use of additional land.

Our crystalline lagoons are changing the way people think about public parks by radically improving the aesthetics and uses of traditional water bodies in public spaces. The crystal clear lagoons can be located in an urban setting, as well as in medium to low-income sectors, where access to this type of amenity is traditionally beyond the reach of family budgets.

TESTIMONIALS SAN ALFONSO DEL MAR, CHILE …San Alfonso del Mar was originally planned with a total of 400 units to be developed. The first phase of the project began in 1997 with the first building, which had only 53 apartments and with an average sale price of US$ 169,500 per apartment. After the stunning success of the Crystal Lagoon, a total of 1,400 apartments were developed with an average sale price per apartment of US$ 267,000...

CITYSTARS SHARM EL SHEIKH, EGYPT …Building an oasis in the middle of the desert, using salt water from saline desert wells, used to be just a dream. The land was an unusable desert and had no commercial value, but now we have built a massive oasis in the middle of the Sinai desert, 5 km inland from the famous tourist spot Sharm El Sheikh. With an investment of 5.5 billion dollars, it’s going to become the center of tourist attention for the whole Middle East…

LAGUNA VISTA, CHILE …For only US$15,000, we bought an 8 hectare (20 acres) piece of land halfway up a small hill surrounded by low-income neighborhoods with poor access routes. Developing a tourist project there was basically impossible. However, after we began the construction of a Crystal Lagoon, we were able to sell over 300 apartments in a year, quickly becoming the sales leader among second home projects in Chile…

PLAYA BLANCA, PANAMA …We had a large piece of undervalued land in the jungle, right behind our resort. There was no way to sell that property as a vacation complex, because it was far from the sea. Crystal Lagoons brought beach life right to the jungle, literally taking the ocean out of the ocean. Now, we are selling over 2,000 apartments and the project has been a success...

TREASURE BAY, INDONESIA …Besides being a visual feast, it is an interactive lagoon of water sports (such as cable ski), attractions and entertainment. Even during the monsoon season, the lagoon is safe and perfectly swimmer-friendly and offers an alternative for those who fear the rough sea or strong currents, rocks, jellyfish, or dark sand beaches…

METRO DEVELOPMENT GROUP, U.S. ...Starting off, my biggest concern was: Would the water be clear? I don’t want it to turn into a pond. The water is so crystal clear, if you hold up a bottle of Aquafina, that’s what it looks like… A lagoon brings the beach to residents and creates an amenity that draws them together in a place where nobody thought this was going to be possible...

TESTIMONIALS LAS BRISAS DE SANTO DOMINGO, CHILE …Our development was moderately successful, thanks to a signature 27-hole golf course considered to be the best in the country. However, even with this splendid landscape, we were facing possible bankruptcy, selling only 2 single family lots per year. After we built a 2,2 hectare (5,5 acres) Crystal Lagoon, we began selling 40 apartments as well as 45 single family lots per year at prices never before seen in the market. Given the project’s success, we are now developing a 1,000 hectare (2,500 acres) project with several Crystal Lagoons, right next to Las Brisas…

DIAMANTE, CABO SAN LUCAS ...We decided to build a world class Tiger Woods Design Golf Course but wanted an amenity that would complement the golf course and make our project more appealing to families. After the implementation of the Crystal Lagoon we were able to substantially increase interest from families, allowing us to attract a full spectrum of luxury buyers and market and sell to visitors that we could not appeal to previously. Thanks in part to the Crystal Lagoon, our project has become a success and is one of the top luxury resorts in the area...

FLOATING LAGOONS

With more than 300 Crystal Lagoons' projects around the world in various stages of development, our recreational crystal clear lagoons have been a huge success. Today, we have developed a new concept within our company that we believe will grow exponentially in the near future: Floating Crystal Lagoons. When evaluating different projects around the world, we noticed that some developments do not have the required space to include a Crystal Clear Lagoon or the land is too expensive. Also, it must be noted that

in the world there are more than 50 million water bodies that are not used for recreational purposes due to poor water quality, and only in the U.S. there are more than 140,000 water bodies which are practically abandoned. In the U.S. for example, many states require retention ponds which may take up to 20% of the land in order to capture rainwater, which are bodies of water not used for recreational purposes due to low aesthetic characteristics and quality.

Crystal Lagoons has developed the Floating Crystal Lagoon technology, which applies Crystal Lagoons’ proven water treatment technology to proprietary floating lagoon structures located within larger water bodies, such as lakes, retention ponds, rivers or the sea, allowing using countless water bodies that currently serve no purpose. The Floating Crystal Lagoons are located and installed within larger water bodies, connected to the mainland through floating decks and bridges, creating a new and innovative recreational bathing zone and generating an additional and unique value to the project.

WORLD'S TOP AMENITY

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS Crystal Lagoons’ concept and technology is being used to address world problems such as energy, water and contamination through diverse industrial applications such as sustainable cooling systems, and HVAC applications.

INDUSTRIAL COOLING SYSTEMS

INDUSTRIAL COOLING SYSTEMS THERMAL POWER PLANT COOLING Currently, one of the problems that generates worldwide concern is related to several types of industries that present a cooling stage, such as thermal power plants, paper mills, refineries, foundries, concentrated solar power plants, and nuclear power stations, etc. Most of these plants withdraw large quantities of seawater directly from the ocean for its use in industrial cooling processes. This system, better known as “Once through Cooling”, is producing a severe environmental impact at the water intake, due to the suction of the marine fauna that causes its death; and at the water outlet, where hot water is discharged into the sea, causing thermal pollution and an alteration on the marine eco-system. Such system is already banned in the U.S. due to the enormous environmental damage that it generates. The current alternative to once through cooling systems are cooling towers, which have very high energy and water

SAN ISIDRO COOLING PLANT

consumption, as well as very high capital and operation costs. Crystal Lagoons has developed and patented a state-of the-art sustainable closed cooling system for industrial processes to dissipate waste heat through the use of crystal clear sustainable lagoons in a closed cooling cycle. The system works by withdrawing high quality water from a crystal lagoon for the cooling cycle of the industrial process. The cooling water absorbs heat as it passes through the industrial process, and is then discharged back into the lagoon, thus completing the closed cycle. The water cools as it flows through the crystal lagoon, where the heat is dissipated by evaporation, conduction, convection and radiation.

Our low-cost closed system technology not only eliminates the environmental impact generated by once-through cooling systems, it also eliminates the issue of biofouling found in most cooling systems. Our patented water treatment technology maintains the water quality at optimal levels, therefore significantly reducing equipment maintenance costs. In addition to lower energy and water consumption compared to conventional wet cooling towers, the sustainable cooling lagoons provide a high quality water reservoir for the facility, as well as an aesthetic and recreational feature, with tempered lagoons providing year-round recreational opportunities. This technology has been patented in the United States (U.S.) under the green fast track program of the USPTO (U.S. Patent Office), which confirms the sustainable nature and objective of our state-of-the-art cooling lagoons.

INDUSTRIAL COOLING SYSTEMS

HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING APPLICATIONS Heat pumps are an efficient heating and air conditioning system. They require a stable-temperature environment for heat transfer. Generally, this is achieved via underground serpentines that have high installation and operating costs, or through water bodies that normally deteriorate (algae, organic matter, etc.) which prevents optimum equipment operation. Crystal Lagoons has developed a technology that allows maintaining large water bodies with excellent water quality, at very low cost. Heat pump systems can withdraw highquality water directly from the crystalline lagoon, which can be used as a stable media to transfer heat, thereby generating up to 50% savings on heating and air conditioning compared to conventional systems and the lagoon can also be used for recreational purposes.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS

NEW DEVELOPMENTS

MEMBRANE DISTILLATION Water distillation using hydrophobic membranes is a desalination technology driven by a temperature gradient that allows extracting fresh water from hot salt water. The technology consists of water vapor that passes through the membrane, forced by the temperature difference of the water that flows at both sides of the membrane. This technology requires hot seawater of high purity to avoid clogging the membrane, and thus maintain the efficiency of the process. The biggest limitation in expanding this technology relates to the difficulty of obtaining large volumes of hot seawater of high quality and at low cost.

Crystal Lagoons has developed and patented a sustainable closed cooling system for industrial processes, by means of crystalline lagoons with high purity water. The lagoons generate high quality hot water, allowing the use of water directly from the lagoon to generate fresh water, without requiring additional energy. This concept could have tremendous global impact, as it allows fresh water to be produced at very low cost and using energy that is currently being wasted.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS

ARTIFICIAL AQUIFER RECHARGE The world is facing an important problem: water scarcity. During rainy seasons, most of the water that flows through the ground goes unused, and ends up being wasted into the ocean. An efficient way to take advantage of rain water that is currently lost is to store the water underground through direct aquifer infiltration. This process consists of collecting surface rainwater, injecting it through wells, and storing it underground. While this process is efficient, it has a big limitation: to directly

infiltrate collected water into the aquifers and store the water underground, it must be of very high quality. Crystal Lagoons has developed a technology that allows treating and purifying surface runoff water at very low costs, so that water can rapidly infiltrate into underground aquifers, complying with strict infiltration regulations. Subsequently, the water stored in the aquifers can be pumped to the surface for use in agriculture, mining and sanitary purposes. This provides a reliable and high quality water supply in times of water shortage.

SEAWATER PURIFICATION Freshwater scarcity is a big problem for the world’s mining industry. The mining sector has reacted to the problem by adopting several actions that optimize water consumption through operational improvements, as well as studying new alternatives for using different types of water. As a result, mining companies are increasingly using seawater for their processes, by transporting seawater through long pipelines from the ocean to the mines. However, seawater has a high organic content, which causes biofouling and leads to several problems

associated with its transportation, such as piping deterioration, load reductions, and the use of expensive coatings, among others. Overcoming these issues drastically increases investment and operation costs. Crystal Lagoons has patented a low-cost technology for eco-friendly purification of seawater that completely eliminates biofouling and eliminates organic matter that currently attaches to pipelines, generating high maintenance costs and associated downtime. This technology allows a considerable

reduction of investment and operational costs, by replacing current high cost treatment systems and generating an efficient alternative to current processes. This patented technology allows the sustainable construction and maintenance of seawater purification systems on a large scale at low cost, and satisfactorily replaces current water treatment technologies. The technology also generates a high-quality water reservoir that can also be used for recreational purposes, benefiting local communities.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS

PUMP STORAGE Crystal Lagoon’s technology can also be used for maintaining excellent water quality in pump storage systems. Pump storage systems store and generate energy by moving water between two water reservoirs located at different elevations. During times of low electricity demand, the water is pumped from a low level lagoon to an upper lagoon. During times of high electricity demand, the water flow is released, passing through hydroelectric turbines to generate electricity.

Such systems are typically used to provide electricity generation stability at renewable power plants that have variable electricity generation because the natural resource used to generate electricity is not permanent, such as solar or eolic plants that depend on the sun or wind, respectively. In such cases, water is pumped from a low level lagoon to a high level lagoon by means of renewable electricity during low electricity demand times. To provide electricity during the night or during low-wind periods, water is released from the high level lagoons and electricity is generated, providing constant electricity output.

REVERSE OSMOSIS COST REDUCTION Reverse osmosis is a widely used technology that can produce freshwater from saltwater (seawater or brackish water). The process is driven by a pressure gradient between a saltwater flow and a freshwater flow, separated by a semi-permeable membrane. When the saltwater pressure exceeds the osmotic pressure of the system, it produces pure water flow through the membrane, generating fresh water. However, for this process to operate properly, high quality seawater must be used to ensure membranes do not become clogged and damaged. Therefore,

the highest cost of the reverse osmosis process occurs in the complex and expensive seawater pretreatment required to obtain high quality water. Crystal Lagoons has developed a technology that allows pre-treating seawater at low cost, providing high quality water for feeding the reverse osmosis process. This technology considerably reduces investment and operational costs at the pre-treatment stage, generating an efficient and sustainable alternative to current pretreatment processes, while creating a high-quality water reservoir that allows recreational use.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS

CRYSTAL CITY The Crystal Lagoons’ city is a conceptual exercise that visualizes the different recreational and industrial applications of Crystal Lagoons’ technology and how a community can benefit from clean energy and water, while enjoying all the recreational features and the idyllic beach life that a Crystal Lagoon provides. In the heart of the city, we can see a central park with a crystal clear lagoon that serves as recreation to the community, enabling safe navigation, beach life and bathing, while at the same time providing air conditioning and heating for a large number of nearby residential and commercial buildings. Also, we can see a floating lagoon, which is a very interesting new application of Crystal Lagoons’ patented water treatment technology. This concept enables developers to completely change the existing use of poor quality lakes and retention ponds, with a unique floating crystal lagoon that allows safe swimming and navigation, as well as providing a new amenity to the community.

At the right side, we can also see a contemplative lagoon in an industrial area, where the lagoon is able to provide cooling water to a thermal power plant, generating a sustainable cooling system. The power plant provides electricity to the entire city. Following the cooling process, the high quality hot water (which is a by-product of the cooling system and otherwise is not used) is sent to a membrane distillation process where fresh water is produced without additional energy. The fresh water can be used as drinking water, for irrigation purposes, or for other applications. In the mountains, we can see a pump storage system. Crystal Lagoons’ technology can also be used in pump storage systems that can create clean energy from pumping water from one low level lagoon to another lagoon at a higher elevation during the day with solar or eolic systems, and then discharge the water flow at night passing it through a hydropower turbine to generate electricity.

The technology also allows feeding reverse osmosis processes, where salty groundwater is pumped through wells and sent into a Crystal Lagoon, which has a sustainable pre-treatment technology to reduce capital and operational costs compared to conventional pre-treatment technologies, and generates an excellent quality water reservoir that allows recreational activities for the community. Finally, at the right side we can see a Crystal Lagoon for artificial aquifer recharge purposes. The lagoon can provide the agricultural industry with a reservoir that stores runoff water, treats the water, and can then send the treated water to underground aquifers through rapid infiltration, generating water reservoirs that can be used in times of drought.
