Toddler dies from boiling water
A fifteen-month-old baby girl died after she was badly burned in an accident involving boiling hot water left out in a bucket. Photo: Supplied Lizzy Bapela A fifteen-month-old toddler died in hospital after suffering severe burn wounds caused by boiling water in Bela Bela. Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla, of the Bela Bela police, said that the incident happened in the Bela Bela Township on Wednesday, 8 August.
Phetla said that the child’s grandmother put boiling water in a bucket, with the intend to use it to remove feather from a slaughtered chicken. The little girl then crawled near the boiling water, maintaining her balance by holding on to an electric cord that was left in an open space. The cord then tipped the bucket, which then poured boiling hot water on the little girl’s face and down her little body. The child was staying with her grandmother and they were alone when the incident happened. The police suspect the granny did not realise the extent of the wounds and skin damage that the water caused, because she did not call out for help or stayed with the child after the incident. Phetla said that the neighbours noticed the incident and called an ambulance. He said the child was airlifted to Mankweng Hospital in Polokwane, where she died shortly after arriving. According to Phetla, the child was badly burnt and the grandmother expressed her sadness to the police, saying she did not mean any harm.
School principal dies in burning car A school principal from Radium died a gruesome death last week when he was trapped in his burning vehicle. Upset residents of Radium told how they tried desperately to save Mr Risba Seemise, principal of the Motswedi School, after his car caught fire just outside the school premises. All their efforts were in vain. The flames were so high that residents were unable to approach the vehicle. They had to watch helplessly while Seemise burned to death in his car. Ms Dalene Kruger, of Radium, told how she hurriedly tried to call the police and the fire department when Ms Emily Baloyi, of the Grootfontein store, came crying for help. “While I called the emergency numbers
of the police and the fire department in Bela Bela repeatedly, my husband, Piet, and some of his workers rushed to the burning vehicle. They tried desperately to help, but there was nothing that they could do,” she said. A highly distraught Kruger said that neither the police, nor the fire department answered their phones. “I am so shocked about this. If the police or fire department only answered their phones, Seemise might have been saved.” Captain Thiyo, of the Bela Bela police, said that they are looking into the matter. He also advised residents to make sure that they are calling the direct Bela Bela police station number to ensure that their problem is dealt with properly. The number is 014 736 97 60/61. – LiN News/The Post.

Three caught for vicious attack
Detective Frans Sekgobela, of the Bela Bela police, led his team in arresting three suspects in connection with a shocking case of attempted murder. Photo: Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela Three suspects were expected to appear before the Bela Bela Magistrate’s Court in connection with a charge of attempted murder on Wednesday, 15 August. Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla, of the Bela Bela police, said that four suspects were arrested for allegedly stabbing and attempting to kill the victim. The arrest and expected court appearance follows an incident that happened in Masakhane in the early hours of Sunday, 12 August. According to Phetla, the suspects followed
the victim from a local tavern on the day in question. The police suspect that they followed him with the intent to rob him. Police also suspect that, failing to succeed in their mission, the suspects then stabbed the victim several times. The attack was so severe that the victim’s intestines fell out of his body. The victim was then rushed to Bela Bela Hospital and then transferred to Mankweng Hospital in Polokwane, because of the seriousness of the injuries he suffered from the attack. Phetla said that the victim had to be air lifted to Polokwane. Phetla explained that the suspects were unknown in the area and are reported to be originally from Zimbabwe. They are also suspected to be illegal immigrants. Through their intelligence on the ground, a detective and a tracing team, led by Detective Frans Sekgobela, managed to identify and arrest the suspects. Sekgobela told The BEAT that his team spent the whole day and night in Masakhane on Monday, 13 August. They were tracing the suspects on empty stomachs, because they were so committed to bring the suspects to book for what they have done. The suspects were arrested at different places while they attempted to flee from the police. Two suspects were nabbed at Agri Mark, while the other was arrested on a farm in Masakhane. All three suspects were arrested on Monday, 13 August. Phetla told The BEAT that the motive for the attempted murder is not known because the suspect is still in a critical condition.

Public Protector, advocate Thuli Madonsela, will give residents of Limpopo a chance to make their voices heard during the her National Stakeholder Consultative Dialogue in Polokwane and Thabazimbi. Photo: Supplied Lizzy Bapela Public Protector, Advocate Thuli Madonsela, is expected to take her National Stakeholder Consultative Dialogue to residents of Limpopo, with meetings scheduled to take place in Polokwane and Thabazimbi. Outreach, education and communication executive manager, Mr Momelezi Kula, said
that the programme has already seen the public protector interfacing with a varied network of stakeholders, including government leaders, civil society organisations and ordinary members of the public in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, North West and Northern Cape. He said the dialogues are being held under the theme, “Joining hands to end maladministration and ensure responsive service delivery.” Kula said that the focus would be on RDP houses and regulatory gaps on the illegal conversion of panel vans into taxis. He said the events combine the dialogue, now in its third year, with public hearings where stakeholders share their experiences on problems surrounding RDP houses and the converted taxi’s. Complainants who wish to bring other matters to the attention of the Public Protector are welcome to do so, if their matters affect a group or community. Kula said that individual complainants, whose grievances focus on other aspects of service delivery, are not turned away and it must be noted that such complaints would not be given first preference during the sessions. A public protector stall is usually placed outside the venues of the meetings, where more of such com-
plaints can be lodged. The public protector is expected to interface with organised stakeholder grouping that includes government officials, political parties and civil society during a formal stakeholder meeting at the Royal Hotel in Polokwane on Tuesday, 14 August. Madonsela would also engage the provincial government executive at the Parliamentary Village in Bendor, Polokwane during a closed meeting later that afternoon. This would be followed by an outreach event at the Multipurpose Community Hall in Regorogile Township, Thabazimbi, where Madonsela and her team will talk with community members on Wednesday, 15 August. The issues to be addressed at both events emanate from systemic investigations into RDP housing problems and regulatory gaps in the illegal conversion of panel vans into taxis. They include waiting lists, procurement concerns, quality of homes, conveyance arrangements, sale of RDP homes, allegations of corruption, regulatory framework and accountability for challenges such as safety and passenger insurance. Kula said that the campaign is also in line with the constitutional injunction that the Public Protector should be accessible to all persons and communities.
Julius Malema speaks at Friends of the Youth League event Lizzy Bapela No amount of action against him seems to be enough to be able to silence the talkative Mr Julius Malema. Malema was speaking at a rally organised by the Friends of the Youth League at the Mahwelereng Community Hall, in Mokopane, on Wednesday, 8 August. Hundreds of Malema supporters embarked on a march ahead of the rally, revealing their everlasting support for their “president” in public. Malema spoke about irresponsible and unreliable leaders who use their power and wealth to suppress others. “As a leader, you must be complemented due to your actions not because you are rich and powerful and you can buy branches and not recognise other people’s memberships. Politics is a very interesting game because you may think you are in charge today and tomorrow things might change. People whom you were very close with have a capacity to turn against you,” he said. He talked about the bad effect the decision of placing five departments in the Limpopo government under administration had. According to Malema, children are now suffering and their studies are badly affected because they do not have textbooks and their results are now under threat. “Instead of holding accountable the person responsible for the situation, the Limpopo government is being blamed. President Jacob Zuma deployed Minister Angie Motshekga in the province and now he comes back and expects the provincial department to account for the mess that the minister made. Zuma is lazy to think because always when he is asked questions during an interview he answers something irrelevant,” Malema claimed. Malema went on to say: “He is used to reading from speeches wrote by
other people and just because the questions are not written for him, he struggles to account. I have worked very close with him so I know him and I know he is not that clever.” According to Malema, Zuma must account for the mess he made in the province if he wants to deliver services to the people like he always say. Malema was referring to the consequences the national administration process brought concerning the departments’ operation. “Now our clinics and hospitals are bankrupt and there are no food and medication there but the country has a president. ,” he said. Malema alleged that, when he speaks, he is labelled as disrespecting the elders, especially the ANC national executive committee. He said that, when a leader does not do well, he must be released and let a new one come in and correct the wrongs that the ousted one has caused. The young lion led a hall, full of supporters, singing songs of the struggle and singing for the “time for change”; a motto that they have set. The supporters displayed posters saying “100% Kgalema Motlanthe for president and Fikile Mbalula for secretary general. Asijike.” Malema said that what they mean by this campaign is that Zuma and current
secretary-general, Gwede Mantashe, must go and “that’s it”. The youth league is deter-
mined to fight dictatorship, tribalism and anarchy in the movement by that campaign.

The winds of change August in the Waterberg is synonymous with windy days where the wind and the dust seem to get into everything and it feels as if it is impossible to keep any house clean. The August winds are also bearers of good news. We know when the wind is blowing in August that the warmer weather is on its way. No matter how you view it, the August winds always bring change with them. They bring change in the weather, change of the season and change in our homes. People deal with the August winds in different ways. For some it is the ideal time to start springcleaning. For others it is a time to hide indoors and avoid the wind as much as possible. Like most things in life, how you deal with the wind depends on your attitude rather than the circumstances. Catherine the Great said: “A great wind is blowing, and that gives you either imagination or a headache.” She was speaking of political changes, but the lesson stays the same; how you deal with life depends on your own attitude to life. Most people choose to make resolutions when the New Year begins. Some want to lose weight, others want to stop smoking, others are going after their dream jobs and still others are planning to change their outlook on life. By the time August rolls around, those plans to make our lives better have faded and most of us have gone back to our old ways. August is the perfect time to reevaluate your life and, most importantly, your attitude to life. August is the time of change, of winds blowing away the cobwebs in our minds that keep us from reaching our potential. The month of August is the perfect time to take stock of life as it is and to begin spring-cleaning wherever it is necessary. Whether it is your home, your job or your family life, now is the time to take a newer and fresher look at things and make the changes that need to be made. Change is never easy. Anatoly France said: “All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.” However, when we embrace change, we can move forward and conquer any fear or outlook that keeps us from reaching our potential.

God’s will is prosperity Bishop Silas Tlou 3 John 1:2 – “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” Do you know God’s will is prosperity? In His sovereignty and authority, He has not ordained that we sit home in poverty with a depressed and lowly heart. No, that is the picture society has sown in our minds. You can still feel and know God while you are living in prosperity. Psalm 35:27 – “May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, “The Lord be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant.” Christians should rejoice because God has pleasure in the prosperity of his servants. Every time you come into the fruition of a blessing, God is happy. He has a personal interest in your prosperity. Parents make plans to reward their children when they achieve certain goals. Some, for instance, reward their child with a gift when they graduate from high school with honours or some other distinction. When the child sees it, he is exhilarated with joy. Once you see your child happy, you rejoice because your child is being blessed. That is the case with God. It makes Him happy to see you blessed and prosperous because you are his child. Imagine for some reason your child is pulled out of the commencement line, and does not graduate. That takes away your joy because you cannot reward him. God reacts in the same manner. He is disappointed when we do not prosper because He has already reserved so many good things for us. Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to be blessed. We must be blessed, if for no other reason than to make God happy. God’s will is prosperity. Prosperity has many different forms and manifestations. Most people think of money when they think of prosperity but God has provided much more than that. There are many people with money who are sick, bitter, and suicidal, on drugs or in a deep state of depression. Money alone does not make you prosperous. Our health has a great role in determining our degree of prosperity. God wants us not only to prosper, but also to be in health. God’s earnest desire is that we live in health. Your health and well-being are very crucial components of prosperity. Psalm 1:3 – “He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.” Prosperity is producing for others and living for others. In this state, you are able to grow. You are as a tree planted by the rivers of water that bears fruit in season.

Waste Water Treatment Works upgrade Thabazimbi mayor Ms Patricia Mosito led councillors in the turning of the sod for the upgrade of the Thabazimbi WWTW. Photo supplied
Lizzy Bapela The Thabazimbi Local Municipality has allocated R84 420 534 for the expansion of the Thabazimbi Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW) in the area. The municipality hosted a sod turning ceremony for the project on Friday, 3 August. Spokesperson for the municipality, Mr Joshua Motsomane, told The BEAT that the project is due for completion in 2014. Thabazimbi mayor, Ms Patricia Mosito, said that the municipality is pleased to announce that they are upgrading the WWTW from 3Ml/d to 6,5Ml/d (diameter) at a cost of R84 420 534. She said that the capacity of the works has been exceeded as the contributing population has increased significantly. The manager of technical services in the municipality, Mr Gopolang Booysen, said that this has led to a situation where the waste from the works does not comply with relevant quality standards. “It is therefore the municipality’s objectives to up-
grade the existing WWTW to ensure that the current and future required treatment capacities are met,” he added. Mosito thanked the private sector for the enormous contribution in infrastructure development. She mostly acknowledged the municipality’s partnership with Anglo American Platinum and Northam Platinum in building a wastewater treatment plant in Northam, bringing with it job creation and a large-scale impact on the socioeconomic development of communities. The municipality points out that the upgrade to the sewer scheme will ensure that it improves Green Drop compliance. It is envisaged that this project will create more than 100 job opportunities, most importantly in the EPWP Infrastructure Sector. “We urge the assistance of the Department of Public Works in identifying further the items that can be implemented using labour intensive methods to create more job opportunities. We cannot do everything, but still we can do something. Because we cannot do everything we will not refuse to do the some-

She also encouraged them to grab the opportunities that the government offers to young people in the country. Moseki elaborated on opportunities that are available in the SAPS and encouraged the learners to give these opportunities attention. Learners who are interested in career opportunities in the Thabazimbi SAPS can contact the station on (014) 777 3500 and ask for Captain Pule Thapela of the Crime Prevention office.

thing that we can do because working together we can do more,” concluded Mosito. Engineering, management and specialist technical services provider, Aurecon and KSMD Consulting Engineers, were tasked with the design and construction monitoring of the extension works. Motsomane said the upgrade also included the upgrading of outfall sewer pipelines to 450 mm concrete pipes and the construction of a berm wall, as well as concrete channels. He added that the project would also allow housing developments to take place, as the system will increase capacity. “The responsibility to accelerate service delivery does not rest with Local Municipality alone, but also the Private Sector. These goals must be achieved without compromising the ecological sustainability of water resources as a result of the poor conditions of our WWTW discharging non-standard effluent,” he said. Thabazimbi Waste Water Treatment Works has achieved 52% in the 2012 Green Drop Progress Report. Motsomane said that, with the upgrading of the WWTW and the construction of a new WWTW in Northam, the municipality aims to achieve 100% after 2014 when these plants are completed. He said that regulation is important to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of sustainable water services, adding that it clarifies the requirements and obligations placed on Water Service Authorities, protecting consumers from a potentially unsustainable and unsafe service. The green drop certification incentive based regulation seeks to identify and develop the core competencies required for the sector that if strengthened, will gradually and sustainably improve the level of wastewater management in Thabazimbi and elsewhere.

Modimolle station commander, Colonel Isaac Maila, member of the Waterberg District mayoral committee, Ms Moremi, and executive mayor, Ms Toltlanang Mogotlane, interacted with one of the older people when they helped them. Photo Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela Officials of the SAPS Modimolle and the Waterberg District Municipality made an effort to continue charity work in the name of Mandela Day. The two departments, led by their superiors, station commander Colonel Isaac Maila and executive mayor Ms Tlotlanang Mogotlane, are still getting together to lend a helping hand where needed in the community of Modimolle and surrounding areas. The team got together to clean for the elderly people who live alone or do not have anyone to clean for them. One of the houses they cleaned was for a 102-yearold woman who lives with her carer. They cleaned the house on Friday, 27 July. During her address to the volunteers, Mogotlane acknowledged the great partnership the municipality has with the SAPS across the district, expressing her grati-
tude towards the members’ efforts and contributions. “I am very glad that the SAPS is showing members of the public that a police officer’s job does not only entails arresting criminals but that the social crime unit also work with the community as well. I can stand before my superiors and praise the good work we are witnessing from the members, led by their commanders. We really need more committed people who can build better communities because working together we can really do more,” she said. The mayor’s assistant, Mr Khazamula Baloyi, Captain Joyce Moabelo and colonel Maila also spoke on behalf of their teams and they expressed their happiness over the great partnership, which they planned to have strengthened. The team has other charity campaigns to conduct such as cleaning and painting other houses in the pipeline.
Lizzy Bapela Modimolle pastor for the Awake Grace Ministries, Pastor Felix Fambi, wants the best for juveniles at the local correctional centre. Fambi was touched by the juveniles’ behaviour during a previous visit to the centre on Wednesday, 1 August. The concerned pastor was accompanied by other stakeholders including Mr Lambert Moloto, from the Department of Agriculture, and Ms Maria Ramoshaba, of the Government Communication and Information Systems (GCIS), both based in the Waterberg. All these stakeholders were surprised to witness the lack of interest in studying and skill development from the juveniles in A Unit, a different attitude from what they witnessed when they visited those in other units, especially B Unit. The juveniles said they lost interest in the courses offered to them by the centre simply because they do not seem useful to them and are irrelevant
to get them jobs after being released form the centre. On the other hand, the team of committed and dedicated officials in B Unit, led by Mr Johannes Sono, is very much pleased with the behaviour and attitude they witness in their unit. The juveniles do take part in activities offered to them such as educational courses, literacy competitions and others. However, the juveniles in A Unit did come out in numbers to attend to the visit by the stakeholders. They listened attentively to the speeches and preaching, interacting with the visitors to show interest. Because the visit was fruitful, Fambi decided to come back very soon. He felt a need to return to the centre and address the issues detected in the unit until the juveniles fully understand what is expected of them to have a bright future after their release. The visitors did encourage the juveniles not to throw in the towel but continue studying as education does not have limits.

TK Mashaba The Run Boikie Run Sports Academy in Bela Bela will be spreading its wings and expand to include some other sporting codes as well as running. Bela Bela’s most famous marathon runner, Boikie Monareng, runs the academy. Boikie, who is famous for the many medals that he won in running events, managed to secure a sponsorship from the Sports Trust. The sponsorship will enable the Run Boikie Run Sports Academy to focus on rugby, volleyball, basketball, soccer and netball in conjunction with their running activities. “To get such a sponsor to help develop sports in our community is a dream come true for me,” Monareng said. Monareng said that his target is to own and run his own sport centre by 2014. “I love sport. I am passionate about it and I will always put it first,” he told The BEAT. The donation to the Run Boikie Run Sports Academy included eight soccer balls, eight basketballs, eight rugby balls and a full hockey kit. “This will help the youngsters who love their sports, but who did not have a start-up strategy,
where to go and what to do,” Monareng said. The Run Boikie Run Sports Academy welcomes all sports fans from the age of nine years and older. Currently they are practicing at the Sunfa Stadium in the Bela Bela Township, but Monareng is planning a meeting with the local Bela Bela sports department to discuss how they can enhance sport in the Township. “I am very aware that there are sports facilities that still need development and that some of my sporting codes are going to need assistance from the municipality,” Monareng explained. The BEAT recently covered the state and deteriorating conditions of the sports facilities in and around Bela Bela. Mr Matome Sebelebele, spokesperson for the municipality, said, “We are aware of the state and condition of the sport facilities and we are working on a master plan which will guide us to which sides we need to develop and prioritise as the township is growing too” he said. The Bela Bela sports facilities need a real boost of development. Facilities like grandstands and stadiums as well as real netball-, volleyball-, tennis- and basketball courts are much needed in the town.
SAB League to cluster teams TK Mashaba The South African Breweries (SAB) Regional League plans to cluster the teams in the league for the next season that is due to start soon. According to insiders, the SAB League wants to cluster the teams together according to their municipal locality. The winners of the clusters will meet each other at the end of the season and the winners of that clash will go on to the promotional play-offs to vie for a place in the MTN League. This plan has not been made final and will be discussed during the South African Football Association (SAFA) regional meeting on Sunday, 19 August. Ms Refilwe Khoza, SAFA official in the Waterberg, confirmed that there are plans to cluster teams together in the SAB League, but also stressed the fact
that no final decision about this idea had been made. The clustering of teams will be of much help to some of the smaller and struggling teams, because it will shorten their travelling time and expenses. In other SAB League news, rumours are flying that Bela Bela FC United are looking to sell their SAB status. According to sources, this decision came after the team lost sponsors and could not afford to travel to all their away games. Mr Zwakala Mokoma, an official of Bela Bela United FC, told The BEAT that the clustering of teams will help his team a lot, because they will be playing close to home, unless they manage to move on to the final playoffs. “We think this is a good idea and it will help a lot of teams with regards to finances. It will help SAFA to have many teams participating in the SAB league,” he said.
