High school rugby player recovering from head injury Justin Steyn Hoërskool Nylstroom athlete, Daniel Letsebe (18) is recovering from a head injury he suffered during a rugby match against Hoërskool Ben Viljoen on Saturday, 6 May. According to Nylie Rugby coach Rudi Fourie, the first team fullback suffered the injury in the early minutes of the first half of the game when his head clashed into another player’s leg. “The injury was caused during a run-in with another player. It was purely accidental and no foul play occurred,” Fourie said. Fourie said it seemed as if Letsebe had fractured his skull and was taken to the Groblersdal hospital for observation. “Three days later he was sent to the Polokwane provincial hospital where

they found a blood clot in his brain, but this was from an old injury,” Fourie said. He said Letsebe was sent back to the Groblersdal hospital on the same day. “Letsebe has been recovering in hospital ever since the incident and we were informed that he started walking again on Monday (15 May),” Fourie said. He added that he is grateful for the support Letsebe has received in this time, especially the good sportsmanship that Hoërskool Ben Viljoen has shown by visiting Lestebe in hospital. At the time of going to press, Fourie said Letsebe was discharged on Tuesday, 16 May, and has agreed to allow The BEAT an interview with Letsebe upon his return. He added that it remains unlikely but not yet certain whether Letsebe will be permitted to play rugby again.

Family worried sick about missing loved one Zani Hiepner Quinton Quickly, a Vaalwater resident, has been missing from Monday, 17 April. Quickly, who resides with his family at Vaalwater, was last seen when he arrived home for lunch to fetch his radio. He told his family and children he would see them later and has not been seen since. “The last time we saw him, he was wearing a white T-shirt and a long denim jean. We are worried sick,” said Sonja Hurtem, Quickly’s mother-inlaw. His behaviour is said to be very unlike him and strange, as he has always been close to his family and he always communicated with his parents, who reside in Cape Town, at least two to three times a week. Quickly’s phone has been off since he was last spotted at Vaalwater, and he has had no communication with anyone since. The family have been to hospitals, the police and mortuaries, but no luck. Hurtem mentioned that they have received calls to say he was spotted in the Modimolle region, but unfortunately leads have led to dead ends. Quickly is approximately 1,76 m tall, has blonde hair and blue eyes. “If anyone has seen him, heard from him or has any information please contact us immediately. We need to find him or know

Elderly man shot during farm attack near Roedtan Justin Steyn

This man is alleged to be involved in a farm attack in Mookgophong where an elderly man was shot in the chest. Authorities followed the spoor of three men who were apparently responsible for the attack. Photo supplied

Three men have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a farm attack at Roedtan on Monday, 15 May. According to Ben Engelbrecht of the Heritage Protection Group, Sam Liversage (68) was asleep at home when he heard a suspicious noise near the bedroom window. “When he investigated, a man shot him in the chest,” Engelbrecht said. “One of the workers heard the shot and contacted the police. It is suspected that the men gained entrance through an adjacent hut and entered their home.”

SAPS condemns domestic violence TK Mashaba The station commander for the Bela-Bela Police, Col Lindi Marx, has strongly condemned the recent spate of domestic violence and murder in Bela-Bela, and said the police will do anything in their power to bring justice to the perpetrators. Alinah Modikwe, in her 20s, was found dead at Zuma View on Monday, 15 May, and is believed to have been murdered. She is the third woman murdered in Bela-Bela in recent months. She was found near the railway line around Zuma View. Police are still waiting for the forensic results, and nobody has been arrested for the crime yet. This took place only a week after a woman was killed in Line 4. It is alleged that she was murdered by her boyfriend, who allegedly attempted suicide afterwards, and a short time after another man is believed to have murdered his girlfriend in Extension 5.

Engelbrecht said the incident occurred at around 05:00 in the morning. A manhunt ensued, and the Mookgophong police, HPG members, local farmers and a helicopter team resulted in the arrest of three men who are believed to have been involved in the incident. “We were assisted by the police and local farmers and were able to track down three men,” Engelbrecht said. He added that the men’s shoes appeared to match the spoor that the team had tracked for 20 kilometres. He also said the men were found in possession of firearms which are believed to have been stolen, and were arrested. Liversage is recuperating in a hospital in Polokwane.

Man robbed in front of BEAT offices Justin Steyn A resident of Bela-Bela became a victim of crime in front of The BEAT’s offices. According to Kabelo Ramahoma, he was standing on the triangular island in Minnaar Street just across from the newspaper’s offices on Friday, 12 May, when he was approached by a man claiming to be a newspaper employee. “He said he needed help with something and added that I would be paid for my assistance,” Ramahoma said. Ramahoma said he followed the man closer to the offices, where the other man asked him for his cellphone and bank card. “I found this odd, but the man said it was only for security reasons that the items were needed. I was not comfortable with this but handed the items over nonetheless,” he explained. Ramahoma said the other man took the items and left, claiming that he was going to do a security clearance check on the information, but never returned. “I was looking for work and had hoped that the man could help me,” he explained. Ramahoma has described the alleged thief as tall, thin, and Zulu-speaking, and added that the man was wearing a blue and white

The incident has been handed over to the Bela-Bela police for investigation. The BEAT’s management said reporters would never approach someone on the street for work purposes. Vacant positions are advertised in the newspaper and when someone is approached on the street by someone who claims to work for the newspaper, they should be wary.

Bela-Bela Traffic Department strengthens enforcement This car was hit by a train as the driver attempted to cross the railway at the entrance to the township on Friday. Photo supplied

TK Mashaba After some time without an accident, the infamous Bela-Bela railway crossing at the entrance to the township has once again played host to a serious accident. On Friday, 12 May at 21:30, a driver from Modimolle was hit by a train as he attempted to cross the rails with his car. The train collided with the front of his BMW, but the man was not seriously injured. Traffic officers say the man alleged that he

had been tired, and that the train had not displayed its lights. The man also apparently said the train had not blown its horn before approaching the crossing. This crossing has claimed a number of lives over the years, as drivers attempted to cross the rails only to collide with passing trains. The BEAT was not able to obtain comment on the matter from Spoornet before going to press. The company’s annual road safety programs focus especially on safety when crossing the railway line.

The road was fully packed as vehicles queued to pass through the traffic cameras to be checked for any outstanding fines. Photo: Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela The Bela-Bela Traffic Department has strengthened their law enforcement measures to ensure that motorists do not

contravene the road traffic rules. The office staff and management went all-out to reach out to and interact with motorists on a three-day operation from Wednesday, 10 May to Friday, 12 May at various parts of the town up to the Klein-Kariba site. The aim was to ensure that motorists know and comply with the road acts and rules at all times and to notify motorists of their outstanding misdemeanours. Head of the Department Isaac Monare told The BEAT that there are cameras everywhere in town that capture every misconduct on the road and record them on the system. These include speeding, driving without fastening seatbelts, not following the road signs, etc. Monare said the motorist in the wrong will then receive a notice of their misconduct and a fine amount via post and they are given up to a certain period to pay, failure to which will result in a warrant of arrest being issued. He added that their system immediately reveals misconduct or outstanding fines for all the vehicles that pass through their operating area during the road blocks and the driver is then stopped for questioning. “Some drivers are not happy with us busting them but there are those who express gratitude in our work, saying that we help them to stay in line with the traffic act and remind them of their unpaid tickets as they sometimes forget to pay. Our aim is to ensure compliance and safety at all times. If people comply with all the rules, then they will have no problem seeing us anywhere. Our cameras capture everything, everywhere in town so there is no more running from the law, said Monare. As the operation was proceeding, happy motorists extended gratitude to the officers for their work, encouraging them to keep up the good work. One elderly man approached Monare and thanked him and his team for conducting such an operation, saying that it also helps combat accidents and saves lives because drivers of vehicles with faults will be notified and brought to book. Departmental spokesperson Superintendent Phillip Seloane confirmed that during the recent operation, a total of 470 vehicles were stopped. 145 had outstanding fines and warnings, and only 69 were prosecuted. He added that such an operation will be conducted on an ongoing process and their department urges motorists to fully comply with the rules of the road and cooperate with their officers while on duty. He also encouraged motorists to pay their fines and keep their vehicles roadworthy at all times. Monare said that no one was arrested and most of the motorists in the wrong settled the matters with the law enforcement officers. He added that the SAPS was engaged to be part of the operation and unfortunately did not have any manpower as their members were assisting in the unrest in Vuwani in the Vhembe District.

Bela-Bela hosts Heads of Departments Lizzy Bapela Bela-Bela hosted the Limpopo Provincial Government’s Induction and Strategic Planning Workshop for Heads of Departments. The accounting officers gathered for the workshop at the Forever Resorts on Thursday, 11 and Friday, 12 May. The workshop was held under the theme “Developing a common vision of the core leadership in the province”. Provincial Government Spokesperson Phuti Seloba said the Provincial Government had seven vacancies for the accounting officers, which indirectly affected the quality of service delivery in the province. He added that all seven vacancies were filled as of Tuesday, 2 May. The vacancies include that of the

Mayor’s bodyguard killed in shoot-out Lizzy Bapela The mayor of Mogalakwena, Andrina Matsemela, expressed her shock following the death of her driver and bodyguard, Solly Nkuna. Nkuna passed away after a shooting incident on Friday, 5 May, in Pretoria’s Soshanguvhe area. The mayor said the following morning that the police have confirmed that Nkuna was shot by unknown gunmen and declared dead upon his arrival at the local clinic. The police do not know the motive for the killing as yet. “We are deeply shocked by this act against this young and determined man,” said the mayor. “We have confidence in the country’s law enforcement authorities, who are working around the clock to apprehend the perpetrators.” Municipal spokesperson Malesela Selokela said Matsemela and other councillors have visited the family since the incident, and called for calm in the area. Selokela added that Matsemela and the councillors urged the public to let the law

A new computer virus has surfaced which could hold your personal information ransom. According to media reports the virus dubbed the “tasksche.exe” file has caused financial chaos for banks and businesses around the globe. The BEAT spoke to Francois Pienaar, an IT technician from BelaNet Internet solutions in Bela-Bela about how the virus works and how to avoid falling victim to the cyber-attack. “The tasksche.exe or Wannacry virus is a new computer virus that downloads the users’ financial and personal information and renders his or her accounts useless. This virus is activated when a particular email has been opened and the information is downloaded without the user being aware.

governance and administration (PoliticalAdministrative Interface). The National School of Governance’s (NSG) topic focused on strategic challenges and interventions towards labour stability in the public sector. The Auditor General, Thembekile Makwetu and the Limpopo Provincial Treasury dealt with the state of compliance and strategic budgeting processes. Both the presenters focused on shrinking the budget visors service delivery expectations. Seloba emphasized that several departments received qualifying audit reports in the latest audits. The accounting officers deliberated on mechanism of enhancing service delivery, and the industrial and economic growth of the LDP (Limpopo Development Plan).

The user then has no access to any of its accounts,” he said. Pienaar further explained that the virus then instructs the user to deposit of, in most cases, $300 in Bitcoins (an online currency) before the information is then free again. “It does not always happen that the user’s information is freed again,” Pienaar said. He said the virus comes in the form of an e-mail that would attract the user’s attention immediately such as bank warnings or demand of payment or final notices. “The e-mail is not an e-mail at all and is actually a link you click on which allows cyber criminals access to all of your information. The public must be careful of these e-mails and not just any e-mails from an address they are not familiar with.” Pienaar has further advised that while strong anti-virus programs are available to download, it is far better to have these purchased and updated on a regular basis. “Think of it as another investment into your personal security. Cyber criminals are finding new ways to steal from people and it is rather more important to set aside a little bit of money and upgrade your computer’s security,” he said.

Upsets over local government institutions Justin Steyn The Beat has received complaints regarding alleged poor service delivery at two government institutions situated in Bela-Bela. Johana Maunatlala said she visited the Bela-Bela clinic on Thursday, 11 May to check her blood pressure and was allegedly ignored by the on duty pharmacist after her check-up was complete. “When I was done with my check-up, I went to the pharmacy section of the clinic but the man there went to sit outside and ignored me. When I went to confront him, he said he doesn’t care about my medication and that I am beneath him,” she added. Reluctant to argue with the man,

Maunatlala said she attempted to get her medication the following day. “I went to the clinic’s pharmacy section and the same man was reluctant to help me yet again and even told me that if I want my medication, I must let someone from management bring him my file.” She said she then reported the man to clinic management who arranged for her medication. Maunatlala alleged that management apologized for the pharmacist’s behaviour and even said he acts disrespectful towards staff and security personnel at the clinic. The BEAT enquired about the incident but were told that management was not available for comment at the time. In another incident, The BEAT received a complaint regarding the Bela-Bela traffic department.

Iwanka Liebenberg said she went to the department’s offices in van der Merwe road at about 08:00 AM on Friday, 12 May to have her drivers’ license renewed. Liebenberg said she sat in the waiting queue and claimed that residents were only assisted about thirty minutes later. “I saw that the people working behind the stations were not paying attention to the queue and some where even on their phones busy with personal calls. I just thought that this was unnecessary as people have taken time off from their jobs to have this done,” Liebenberg said. She added that she and some of the residents present at the Traffic department, lives 40 km out of town and can’t afford to stay there for long periods of time or be “sent back and forth” due to insufficient staff.

“I am not one to complain and would like to even offer assisting the department in providing a free service to the community. There are also a few maintenance issues at the department that need to be addressed that I would be happy to assist in,” she added. In a telephonic interview the Head of Traffic in Bela-Bela, Isaack Monari, denied that the department is short-staffed and said any queries or complaints could be directed to him personally. “I have not received any complaints about my department, but I know our services aren’t always perfect. I encourage the community to contact me personally if they have any issues or complaints regarding service delivery,” he said. Monari can be contacted on - 079 875 6777

Music makers and lovers remember Bojo Mujo Lizzy Bapela Role players in the showbiz world joined fans, relatives, friends and colleagues of the late Tshepang Jacky Letlhake, known in the music industry as Bojo Mujo in remembering the late House DJ and artist. Scores of people flocked to Letlhake’s resting place at the Modimolle cemetery for a tombstone unveiling ceremony and later to his parents’ home in Phagameng for a music festival and a battle of the DJs session in celebration of the DJ’s life and music on Saturday, 13 May. During the same ceremony, the crowds also commemorated the death of

Letlhake’s mother, Chotshi Minah and erected a tombstone on her grave. She passed two months after her son on 8 March. The events were followed by a wedding ceremony as Letlhake’s brother and manager at House Therapy Studios, where he used to record his albums was tying the knot. People from Modimolle and Pretoria and surrounds came in numbers to show their support. It has been two years now since Letlhake passed after a short illness in Pretoria on 31 January 2015 and his music is still played in households, clubs and radio stations. Fans and colleagues still maintain that Letlhake was a crowdpulling artist and people person. They

applauded him for never forgetting his hometown even at the height of his success, as he still returned to Modimolle for performances with local artists and DJs. Speakers described Letlhake in the way they knew him on a personal and professional level. Among the speakers were advisor to the NCOP (National Council of Provinces) Thandi Modise Paul Sebego, gospel artist Simon Makgatholele and EFF Modimolle PR Councilor Silas Marema, AKA Coach. Marema said that all went well with no glitches and all was up to standard. He said that remembering the good times was like reliving the moments when Letlhake

He does not let his brother’s good deeds go unnoticed. Many young DJs and leader-wannabes looked up to Letlhake and it was not for nothing because he was a great leader and role model. If we could walk in the footsteps of those who paved a way for us, the world would be a better place indeed,” he added. Sello told The BEAT that they remember his little brother’s death as if it happened just yesterday and he forever lives in their hearts and minds. Local NGO Change for Bela-Bela sponsored the school with a new signboard. Photo: Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela Bela-Bela’s Maope Secondary School wants to ensure that their school is clean and safe for anyone, especially the learners. The school’s deputy principal and teacher Sam Motalane told The BEAT that the state in which the school was became very concerning and disturbing, and they asked for help from outside as the local municipality failed them. Maope School approached local

NGO, Change for Bela-Bela to assist them in cleaning the main entrance of their school and trim trees across the yard to make the school look good. Motalane said some trees fell down after they were destroyed by last year’s storm, while some fell on top of the classrooms and they all pose a danger to the lives of everyone within the yard. He added that Change helped clean their school during term time, and they came again to lend a helping hand. The main entrance was cleaned and some of the trees trimmed.

A theatrical treasure for local primary schools

The National children’s theatre production, Khokho’s treasure, recently visited schools at BelaBela to let children experience a professional theatrical and to inspire children in rural areas to think of a career in theatre. Khokho’s Treasure, a national children’s theatre production, directed by Francois Theron, starring Suzaan Helberg, Teekay Baloyi, Nomonde Matiwane, Mark Tatham, Sbusiso Nhlapo Ferguson and

Kealeboga Tshenye, visited Bela-Bela between Monday, 15 May, and Tuesday, 16 May, where they performed to schools, such as Eden Christian School, Thusanang Primary School and Mmamakwa Primary School. The play’s main aim is to educate and entertain primary school learners through a selection of traditional stories, vibrant songs and opening the minds of learners to a possible career in theatre, along with a living African theme throughout the play.

It is also focussed on bringing live and professional theatre to the rural communities who have yet to have such an experience. The story begins where the characters’ beloved Khokho passed away and leaves his great grandchildren a dusty suitcase full of his memories, unique items, surprises and strange garments. The deeper the characters dig, the more the story develops. The Post attended the performance at Eden Christian School where the learners

and educators were especially enthralled by one of the best performances Bela-Bela has seen in a while. The tour was sponsored by the department of arts and culture and the national lottery. Recently the play was selected to be a main production at the Baxter theatre, at the prestigious 19th AASITEJ World congress and international theatre festival for children and young people in Cape Town, which will take place from 20-24 May.

Waterberg team takes second place Academy and now the coach of the Haggai Combined Private School’s Under-12 soccer team, added another trophy to his collection when his team took first place. The Thohoyandou school took the title at the Limpopo Provincial Finals at Hoërskool Noorderland in Polokwane last weekend. The final game was called off due to weather, but Haggai was declared the winners as they had come out on top of the log in the round-robin phase. Winning the Danone Nations Cup with his new school, which he joined in 2015, is very special because, he points out, that this was the first time that these players had played in a tournament of this size and he was concerned about how they would handle the pressure.

TK Mashaba The Waterberg team Kgwatlele Primary School from Mokopane did well at the Under-12 Danone competition’s provincial knockout round. The team came second in the competition, although they were still eliminated. The games took place on Saturday, 13 May in Polokwane. They beat Thapola-a-Nkona Primary School 1-0 and continued on to be victorious against Megoring Primary School 40. They played to an initial 1-all draw against Katang Primary School before beating them 30 on penalties. Stream A champions Qualitho FC will compete in the regional play-offs with Ditlou FC and Palala Giant Killers in Lephalale this coming weekend. Photo: Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane The Waterberg SAFA Region will host play-offs in Lephalale on Saturday, 20 May to determine the regional champions between the winners of all three streams (A, B and C). Qualitho FC of Rapotokwane will be representing Stream A, while Ditlou FC represents Stream B of the league. Palala Giant Killers from the host Local Football Association (LFA) will represent Stream C. Boys 2 Men FC lost out on a chance to participate in the regional play-offs after they were held to a 2-all draw, when they visited Bela-Bela Pirates on Sunday, 14 May. At the Ephraim Mogale Stadium the match between Rapotokwane’s Qualitho FC and the host Modimolle All Stars FC had to be abandoned, after the players of the home team left the field of play during the match. Qualitho FC was leading 3-0 at the time when the opponents decided to abandon the match. Although the result has not yet been included in the recent log until the league makes a verdict, Qualitho FC has already

won the league as they are a point ahead of the second placed Boys 2 Men FC. Earlier that day, NTK Happy Boys shared the spoils with their local rivals Modimolle Home Defenders in a 2-all stalemate. The struggling Modimolle Bussel FC was awarded a much-needed three points after they won on a walkover against Diesel N Dust FC of Bela-Bela. The play-offs in Lephalale will serve to crown the SAFA Waterberg Region’s SAB League champions. The first match of the day between Palala Giant Killers FC and Ditlou FC will kick of 08:30, with the second match between Ditlou FC and Qualitho FC scheduled for 12: 00. The last match will take place at 15: 30 with Qualitho FC taking Palala Giant Killers FC. The play-offs will be played on a round robin format. The regional champions will then proceed to the provincial play-offs, where the provincial winner and the runner-up will gain promotion into the ABC Motsepe League (SAFA Second Division). Last season the Waterberg region was the biggest winner in the provincial play-offs, with Mokopane Ratanang gaining promotion into the higher league.

The Bela-Bela Diesel N Dust Football Club made a huge announcement on Tuesday, 16 May making it public that the team’s SAB League status was up for sale. Diesel N Dust Managing Director Pat Seema indicated that the focus will now shift to the ladies soccer team and the netball team which is currently doing well in the provincial league. Seema said the status should have been sold two seasons ago, but the decision was delayed by his passion for football development. He said Diesel N Dust has always been about development, and currently the football club was not serving the purpose. Seema’s passion for football development was evident, looking at his patience even when the team was struggling in the league. “We are still passionate about sports development, but for now the focus will shift to netball and ladies soccer teams.

Even in marriage, when things don’t work out there is always an option for divorce,” he said. He said the netball team is doing extremely well and positioned second in the provincial league. For the ladies soccer team, Seema said they are not under any pressure since this is their first season. “The fighting spirit that the netball team is currently displaying, is the same spirit that we were expecting from the football club,” Seema emphasised. Diesel N Dust is known for rewarding excellence through players’ awards. The netball awards will be held this year in September where outstanding players will be recognised. The sale of Diesel N Dust status may be a sad announcement for the players and supporters, but it might also open up an opportunity for a new team in the third division league. Those who are willing to discuss the league status can contact Pat Seema on 083 631 6284.
