Planting veggies for

MADIBA Mzamane Ringane

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden set aside their political rivalry to plant veggies and express goodwill on Mandela Day, 18 July. A striking pose of Ramaphosa, the party political deputy president of the ruling ANC, and Van Staden of the DA, dressed in overalls and doing charity work together, was bound to raise eyebrows across the political spectrum. The posture also comes at a time the national and local political discourse is somewhat poisoned by racial fingerpointing. For Ramaphosa and Van Staden all that became immaterial, as the latter held a watering can, pouring water into the hands of the former, in a symbolic washing of hands, following the planting of veggies for the most needy. This gesture was received with a round of applause from those in attendance. On the occasion of the Mandela Day event in Mookgophong on Tuesday, 18 July, Ramaphosa said it was because of Madiba’s vision that Van Staden and his ANC comrades joined hands to enjoy the fruits of democracy. He said it did not matter if the ModimolleMookgophong Local Municipality fell under the DA, because this was what Mandela fought for: a democratic South Africa whereby the majority ruled. Ramaphosa, who owns a game farm on the outskirts of Bela-Bela, said Mandela paved the way for people of all races to live together in harmony. Members of the audience whistled and ululated when Ramaphosa said it was part of democracy that Modimolle-Mookgophong was governed by the DA, under the leadership of Mayor Van Staden.

It was indeed Ramaphosa who spearheaded a high-profile delegation of ANC alliance leaders to campaign at Modmolle ahead of the gamechanging local government elections. Before the formal programme, the MookgophongModimolle

Ramaphosa received a warm welcome when he arrived at Mookgophong, with members of the public singing and dancing in his honour. Speaking to members of the public in a packed marquee, Ramaphosa sang Nelson Mandela’s praises for his contribution in the fight for freedom. “Nelson Mandela represented many wonderful things to all of us, but he mostly represented the best of human virtues,” said Ramaphosa. He also conveyed a message of gratitude to Paul Miller, the CEO at CIPLA, with Mathabatha also expressing his appreciation. Traffic officer injured in accident The official traffic vehicle which overturned. Photo: TK Mashaba

TK Mashaba A Bela-Bela traffic officer escaped serious injury when a vehicle allegedly speeding on the wrong side of the road nearly collided with his official car headon, on Monday, 17 July. The officer, Elliot Mosiamedi, was forced to swerve to the right, but unfortunately lost control and the vehicle overturned. According to local traffic head, Isaac Monare, Mosiamedi was returning from setting up a camera in the vicinity of the Emmarentia Geldenhuys mission station, when suddenly a vehicle approached at high speed on the wrong side of the road. The speeding vehicle was from BelaBela headed towards Modimolle. “Mosiamedi tried to swerve, but lost control of the vehicle, which overturned,” Monare said. “We are very happy that our colleague did not sustain serious injuries from the accident.” A case of negligence was opened against the driver of the other vehicle, who fled the scene.

A young man’s joyride in someone else’s vehicle has cost him more than he bargained for. John Selamolela (22) appeared in court on Thursday, 13 July, after he nicked his father’s bakkie in November last year for a trip to Bela-Bela. He ended up in a ditch with the bakkie, which was scrapped. This was not the first time young Selamolela had made off with a vehicle that belonged to someone else. The court was told that he had received a suspended sentence after an earlier trip with a vehicle owned by a local firm. The incidents apparently took place when his father, who works night shift, was not on duty. Magistrate Pieter Manthata read him the riot act and told the young man that the only reason he was not receiving a prison sentence is that his wife, child, and younger brother would be left destitute, since he is the breadwinner for the young family. Selamolela was given another suspended sentence, and a fine of R6 000. “You have no respect for the law or other people’s property,” the magistrate informed him. “Clearly, your previous sentence was insufficient.”

Attempted poaching at Predator Park Justin Steyn

The king of the savannah continues to be under threat with another incident of lion poaching under investigation in the Waterberg. It is most fortunate that none of the animals were successfully poached in the latest instance at a predator park in Bela-Bela. Loebies Predator Park announced it had nearly lost some of the lions on the evening of Thursday, 13 July. “At around 22:30 we heard a commotion in the fields around the wild dog and lions’ enclosures. We were informed that our fences were cut and entry was gained into the farm. We discovered poisoned chickens that were thrown inside some of the lions’ enclosures. Our lions were spared and did not eat any of the chickens. The poachers, approximately three, fled the scene,” said the park’s owner Annel Snyman. Snyman said local trackers and antipoaching units arrived at the scene

and started inspecting the area. She added further investigations indicated the enclosure’s fencing was damaged in several places. “They knotted the fence together and concealed it. We have electrical fencing but they managed to hot wire the fence - the lights went on but no alarm sounded,” Snyman explained. The Park has since urged the community to assist with any information and has urged other parks to be vigilant of suspicious behaviour. “This is a plea for urgent help, if there is anyone out there who would be able to assist us in additional security accessories or items that will be able to help protect us. Please get in contact with us as soon as possible as we need all the help we can get.” Snyman also urged residents of the Loubad and Alma area to be vigilant and report suspicious activity to the Modimolle

Police. Those who would like to assist the park can contact 083 520 9172. This is the third attack on lions in the Waterberg since June. Earlier it was reported that the mutilated carcasses of two lions were discovered at the Emoya wildcat sanctuary in Vaalwater in early June. Barely a month later three additional lions were found dead at a farm outside of

Modimolle. The killings are suspected to be for the use of traditional medicines. Meanwhile, a suspect was arrested for allegedly attempting to poison lions at a farm in Elandsfontein on Tuesday, 18, July. It is not known if the suspect is linked to the Loebies Predator Park incident.

Zimbabwean in court for theft Justin Steyn Two men – one a Zimbabwean national – have appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 12 July for alleged theft. Zimbabwean Alex Chauke (30), accused of stealing goods valued at R37 000, has abandoned a bid for bail. He was arrested on Thursday 15 June after being found in possession of cellphones, laptops and other electrical devices he allegedly stole from a residential home in BelaBela. The Zimbabwean national faces charges of theft and additional charges of being in South Africa without proper documentation. In an unrelated development, the police have warned those who employ or harbour illegal immigrants faced fines of up to R7 000. “Employers can be fined up to R7000 per person in their employ. Justin Steyn Residents in Ludorf Street in Bela-Bela were alarmed at bursts of gunfire between a local man and an alleged criminal on Tuesday 11 July. According to the Bela-Bela police spokesperson, Sergeant Hester van Wyk, the shootout started near Laerskool Warmbad when a man, who chose to remain anonymous, was approached at his car by an armed man and held at gunpoint as he stopped in his driveway. Van Zyl said an accomplice and the culprit

demanded money from the victim. “He complied and the two fled and the armed suspect fired at his car as they ran off. The man took his own firearm and then gave chase into Ludorf Street. An exchange of gunfire went on between the two, but the man managed to apprehend the (armed) robber,” she said. She added that the second suspect was apprehended at the town’s municipal offices by members of the Bela-Bela Crime Support unit after a description was provided. No injuries were reported. Seun Maluleke (35) is being accused of breaking into a house in one of Bela-Bela’s suburban areas on Thursday, 29 June. According to Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla, Maluleke broke into the said home and allegedly stole grocery items. Phetla said he was surprised by one of the house’s inhabitants, who gave chase. Maluleke was apprehended by members of the Bela-Bela Crime Support patrol units. On the day of his latest appearance, Maluleke’s bail hearing was postponed to Tuesday, 25 July.

Lizzy Bapela Bela-Bela Mayor Councillor Jeremiah Ngobeni says his municipality will be attending to requests for assistance from the local municipality in the new financial year. The mayor said this following a stakeholders’ summit in June. Certain suggestions and requests had been put forward by, among others, youth representatives, early childhood development centres, schools, people with disabilities,

ecumenical movement, the elderly, SAPS and various government departments. Among the requests for help, the local youth complained about lack of facilities at the multipurpose centre. Youth representative, Wilson Matlaisane, expressed concern that the response from the city fathers was lacking in detail. The SAPS Cluster Commander Brigadier Mafelachuma warned the public of various moneymaking scams which criminals are using to rob them of their hard-earned monies.

Municipality wants more libraries Justin Steyn The Bela-Bela municipality plans to enrich the intellectual capacity of residents by establishing more libraries. This is according to the municipality’s Head of Social development, TJ Mothapo, who spoke to The BEAT during an interview on Tuesday, 18 July. “We have noted the desperate need for more libraries in town, and have liaised with the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture, to aid us in this quest,” he said. According to him, the only functioning library in town is situated at the municipality’s offices. “The small library at the township was destroyed during unrest earlier this year. Another library is in Rapotokwane, which is about 72 kilometres from town. So we

came up with a few suggestions for the department as they approached us, and asked for ways the libraries could be improved within the next financial year,” He added that the libraries will be fitted with books and equipment such as internet connections and computers. Mothapo said that it was then suggested that two modular libraries be established in the township. However, this can only be implemented within the next financial year. “We plan to have one at the multipurpose centre and one at the Bela-Bela community hall. This can only be done by the department as we are only responsible for allocating vacant land to be used.” Mothapo said that if negotiations are successful, the municipality would like to provide libraries to areas such as Pienaarsrivier, Extension Six of the Bela-Bela Township and Masakhane.

Business points fingers

The mainstream Sunday Press published tributes to Ray Chikapa Phiri written by Johnny Masilela. Photo: TK Mashaba

The Bela-Bela Black Business Forum has accused certain politicians of encroaching into their space. Forum spokesperson, Piet Mabusela, accused the unnamed politicians of trying to dictate to companies in the tender processes. He alleged the politicians wanted the companies to operate

according to their terms, so as to demand kickbacks. Mabusela said most of the projects in Bela-Bela have suffered serious financial losses, due to these alleged tendencies. He said the forum will be monitoring the situation going forward. Bela-Bela Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni said a meeting was in the pipeline between the forum and the authorities.

Opportunity for girls TK Mashaba The BEAT consulting editor Johnny Masilela was in the middle of writing a tribute to his friend and music legend, Ray Chikapa Phiri, for a Johannesburg-based Afrikaans Sunday newspaper, when his mobile rang. On the other end of the line, he said, was a senior editor at another Jozi newspaper, a high-profile English title also published on Sundays. “Goodness me, the English editor was passing on a message from her editorial bosses, saying because I have been so close to Bra Ray, that I do a tribute over upwards of 1

000 words,” Masilela explained. The tribute, which was published last Sunday 16 July, was to be syndicated to the English newspaper’s sister publications and online content in the major centres of Durban and Cape Town. He said the Bela-Bela narrative around Phiri stretched back to about a fortnight before the Stimela ensemble leader’s untimely death, at the local township’s Club Paradise, where Masilela was caught up in an argument over the rightful composer of a 1970s ballad. Masilela said when everybody else argued strongly that the song was composed by the singer, one Mpharanyane, he scooped his

mobile and called an old friend: Ray Phiri, and placed the mobile on speaker. In answer to the question as to who was the real composer, Phiri’s voice crackled into the speaker, declaring none other than the Stimela frontman himself composed that particular song, and not the singer. In addition to the two mainstream Sunday newspapers, Masilela has been approached by a Pretoriabased website to pay his last respects to his friend, poet and intellectual, Phiri, for whom The BEAT consulting editor was at the embryo stages of a biography. Masilela and Phiri worked together as board members of the National Arts Council.

An initiative to distribute the national and African Union flags at schools is gathering steam. The process is being run by an organisation called Young Patriots. The Young Patriots movement has already distributed the flags at schools in Bela-Bela, where the initiative was launched, then at Modimolle, Mookgophong, Lephalale and Thabizimbi. During visits to the schools, Young Patriots educate schoolchildren about the proper

way to handle and put up the flags on the masts. The Young Patriots movement is funded by the National Youth Development Agency, in partnership with the national Ministry of Arts and Culture. The programme was unveiled by Arts and Culture Minister, Nathi Mthethwa, in Pretoria in 2016. The Limpopo-based Young Patriots visit schools across the province for educational and flag verification purposes. Programmes against the abuse of children and women form part of the tapestry.

Young and old do battle Mzamane Ringane There is an age-old adage that suggests “age is just a number”, which was symbolically brought to life by young and old participants of the ModimolleMookgophong Mayor’s Marathon on Saturday, 15 July. The event, which started at Modimolle’s Ephraim Mogale Stadium, attracted athletes ranging from the tender age of nine to the golden age of 70. The marathon was part of the broader activities lined up for the Mayoral 4-in-1 tournament. The sporting codes at this event also included soccer, volleyball and netball. To set a good example to the residents of Modimolle, Mookgophong, Alma, Roedtan and Vaalwater, Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden exchanged her high-heeled shoes for sneakers, sweating it out alongside the athletes during the 5 km event.
