Justin Steyn The Department of Education at Bela-Bela has expressed concern over the amount of undisciplined children in different schools. This emerged during a rather poorlyattended rural safety meeting on Thursday, 8 February at the Bela-Bela police station. “This is a serious matter that needs to be brought under the attention of all community forums. It is a shame that there are so few representatives in the house. Previous attendees have probably not taken note of our date shifts as yet,” said Captain George Lebese who chaired the meeting. A representative of the Department of Education stated that there is an increase in drug and alcohol related issues in schools. “It is of great concern that is only the start
of the year and we have seen a worrying amount of cases where children are using drugs and drinking in school. What is of most concern is that the children are all at either primary or secondary school level. Most schools in the township have this problem,” she said. She added that students have also become increasingly violent. Lebese also said that he is aware of instances related to violence among the youth. “Just yesterday the police station was approached with a case of violence where it was reported that three boys were involved in an alleged assault and this is becoming more common,” he said. Lebese added that more attendance is expected of the next rural meeting which is expected to take place on every second Thursday of each month.
Local struggle stalwart Zunaid Mosam has penned a moving tribute for his late friend and fellow comrade, Teenage Monama of Modimolle. Mosam hailed Monama as a strong individual who was unwavering and always stood his ground. The tribute follows the passing of the Limpopo SACP Chairperson last weekend. In his tribute Mosam said he and other comrades from the erstwhile Warmbaths were detained and taken into solitary confinement at the then Nylstroom prison. “A couple of weeks later we were joined by comrade Teenage, who until then was held in the police cells of Nylstroom Police Station. His arrival was a sense of solace to me. He became my confidante and advised me,” he said. Mosam also recalled the fondest memories of 1985, when he was invited and tasked to assemble a soccer team which was to participate in a soccer
tournament at the erstwhile Potgietersrus, which is now known as Mokopane. “Our ‘Indian’ community in Modimolle was small, barely twenty families, and I could not muster enough players to participate. I asked my dad, Amin Moostafa, who for many years had a team which was known as Aces United in Phagameng. My father suggested we see comrade Tsietsi Mohapi who owned the popular Troublemakers Football Club. Comrade Mohapi sought the assistance of comrade Teenage. The night before the tournament Teenage, my Dad and I visited several homes and at the end we had the required number of players for the tournament,” he said. Mosam remembered how they managed to travel to the tournament, using his father’s vehicle and the bakkie belonging to his uncle and local businessman Yacoob Bellim, popularly known at Modimolle as Jakes. He said it was the late Monama’s stewardship and understanding of the game which led the barefooted team to victory at the tournament, against all odds.
Long-standing Home Affairs case against John Baloyi drags on Justin Steyn Alleged corruption suspect, the Home Affairs official John Baloyi, was expected to appear in the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 27 March. Baloyi faces charges of alleged corruption after he allegedly demanded a bribe of R3 000 from a foreign national in
January 2017. The 33-year old was arrested a few days after the alleged incident was reported. According to Captain Matimba Maluleke, spokesperson for the highpriotity crime investigating unit the Hawks, Baloyi was arrested after he allegedly confiscated a passport which belonged to a foreign national. Maluleke said the arrest was made
during a joint operation between the South African Police Service, the South African Revenue Service and the Department of Home Affairs. Maluleke alleged that Baloyi demanded a bribe of R3 000 from the victim, a foreigner of Indian origins, for the return of his passport. Baloyi made his first court appearance on Wednesday, 1 March 2017, at the
Modimolle Magistrate’s Court where bail of R2 000 was granted. During the course of the year, Baloyi has made several court appearances, with some of the appearances having to be postponed for various reasons, among these missing court records and the continuation of investigations. Baloyi made his last appearance of 2017 on Tuesday, 21 November.

Bra Julie Stewart remembers girlhood First Lady The BEAT Team If there is someone nearer home with yesteryear fond memories of First Lady Dr Tshepo Ramaphosa (neé Motsepe), it is streetwise Bela-Bela township socialite, Julie Stewart. Bra Julie, as he is affectionately known, is one of the few 1970s hostel boarders who had as his proud headmaster Dr Ramaphosa’s dad, the late ABC Motsepe, at Sekitla High School at the village of Mathibestad, outside Hammanskraal. Stewart was also a student under the late legendary Nchaupe High School headmaster, the late Sam Moseneke, the father to Life Esidimeni presiding Judge Dikgang Moseneke. Sekitla High School still stands intact at the village of Makapanstad, also outside Hammanskraal. Stewart told The BEAT in a recent interview that while a student at Sekitla High School, he had distant memories of Motsepe bringing along, in his signature vintage cars, little boys and girls who he introduced as his kids to the boarding school boarders. “I remember vividly the little boys and girls streaming out of the headmaster’s (Motsepe’s) car. They would all cling to his knee, leaping around and giggling,” Stewart explained. Stewart said he remembered that among

them was the more composed elder sister, the present-day First Lady, Dr Tshepo Ramaphosa. The narrative around the Motsepes childhood years is a gripping story of a family shaped on downright work ethic. Neighbours at the erstwhile family home in Mmakau have spoken about the family of businessman-cum-educator, ABC and his late wife Kay, who inculcated in their
children the ethos of sheer hard work. For instance, villagers in Mmakau have said during their childhood, the likes of Dr Ramaphosa washed the dishes and did other household chores such as polishing the floors with Sunbeam polish. The younger present-day billionaire and Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club owner, Patrice, is better remembered in the village of Mmakau, driving around in a battered
customised Datsun E20 minibus, transporting crates of beer from the Kay Motsepe Bottle Store to local shebeens. Added Stewart: “At boarding school Mr Motsepe (headmaster) was a disciplinarian who nudged us to work hard on everything we did, from our studies to taking care of our own washing and ironing.” The First Lady Ramaphosa was, just after President Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address, trending on social media as a hard-working woman and philanthrophist. As for Julie Stewart, he has since relocated to Johannesburg for purposes of work, but is a frequent visitor back at BelaBela over the holidays and some weekends.
Tributes pour in for Modimolle’s Monama the MK veteran Mzamane Ringane The ANC and the provincial legislature in Limpopo have sent condolences to the family of the late Teenage Monama, who was affectionately known as Commander Teenage. Monama succumbed to a short illness on Saturday 17th February. Limpopo ANC Secretary Nocks Seabi described the late Monama as one of the “finest revolutionary cadres who participated selflessly in the struggle for liberation.” “At the dawn of our freedom, he did not expect or demand any material rewards for his contribution,” he said. Seabi said Monama played a role in the formation of the militant Congress of South African Students (Cosas). The late struggle stalwart joined the military wing of the ANC, Mkhonto we Sizwe, in the early 1980’s. After the dawn of democracy in 1994, Monama was among the first former MK combatants to campaign for the founding of the MK Veterans Association. Monama later served as the MKMVA deputy chairperson. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Limpopo chairperson of the South African Communist Party. “(The) ANC wishes to extend (its) heartfelt condolences to the family, comrades and friends of our departed commander and commissar. The funeral service and other details will be communicated after consultation with both the SACP and the Monama family,” Seabi added.

The Speaker of the Limpopo Legislature, Polly Boshielo, also conveyed condolences to the family, friends, comrades and colleagues of the late Monama.
“The passing on of comrade Monama is a huge loss not only to his family, but also the community of Limpopo, especially his immediate community of Modimolle. His
leadership record leaves us with a great void, taking into cognizance the sacrifices he and many others made for the liberation of the people of South Africa,” he said.
Much-talked about missing foetus women released pending investigations TK Mashaba The Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 16 February, withdrew charges against two local women accused of allegedly concealing a foetus. The BEAT has reported in the last edition that the women had been initially charged with the alleged concealment of
a new-born baby, quoting local police sources. In its ruling last Friday, the Bela- Bela Magistrate’s Court withdrew the charges against the two women – one the mother and the other an alleged accomplice – until the discovery of the missing foetus. The two women are residents of the township at Bela-Bela and are both in their mid-thirties.
Bela-Bela SAPS Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla said the two women were arrested after investigations pointed to a foetus being illegally buried. The alleged burial took place last Wednesday, 7 February, according to Phetla. In the latest interview on Monday, 19 February, Phetla said Sinah Baloyi, the baby’s mother, and her alleged accomplice,
Josta Dikeledi Manye, were released after the withdrawal of the charges, “pending the recovery of the foetus.” Baloyi and Manye first appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 9 February, following their arrest subsequent to a tip-off from the community. Phetla said police invetigations continued.

BRA enters Spa Park political space Lizzy Bapela The Bela-Bela Residents Assocciation (BRA) has entered the highly-contested Spa Park/Mountain View - and by extension Masakhane - political space. A special summit was held in the Spa Park Community Hall on Saturday, 17 February, with the objective to launch a task team to prepare the groundwork for a formal BRA branch. A high-profile delagation of the civic group’s leadership launched a task team in Spa Park/Mountain View, ahead of the formal launch of a branch going forward. Conspicuous in their presence were BRA leader, Piet Mabusela, and the organisation’s PR councillor, Joseph Makhubela. Local civil society activist, Ida Aschendorf has been elected BRA task team chairperson, with Sam Aschendorf her deputy. Another civil society activist, Eva Dibetso, was elected secretary. Local residents, Bobby Miles and Neil Miles, were respectively elected task team

Mabusela said residents at Spa Park/ Mountain View have over a period of time been crying out for BRA’s presence in the area, alleging those elected into council had failed them. The Spa Park/Mountain View/Masakhane constituency was won by the DA in the last local government elections.
Mabusela was confident of what he described as a positive turnout for the meeting last Saturday. Makhubela said the objective of the task team was to familiarise locals with the workings of BRA as a political formation, and that a proper ward committe was to be set up in due course. BRA came into being after leading
members of the ANC broke way ahead of the local government elections. The Spa Park/Mountain View neighbourhood has been a political hot potato, with residents embarking into violent service delivery protests. The EFF at Bela-Bela also entered the contested space by leading a land occupation campaign at nearby Alma Road.

Politicians in the Waterberg have been on a charity mood lately, apparently with an eye on the forthcoming 2019 general elections. It was first the Waterberg District Executive Mayor, Morris Mataboge, who donated blankets to over 150 elderly people at Pienaarsrivier, during the Office of the Executive Mayor’s senior citizens programme. Then Bela-Bela Mayor, Jeremiah Mfiti Ngobeni, donated sanitary towels to girl leaners at Mampatile Primary School. A local commercial bank also donated school shoes and socks, while a clothing retailer gave out underwear. Not to be left behind, Bela-Bela Local Council Chief Whip, Henrietta Ledwaba, donated food parcels to senior citizens from her women’s prayer group during her 55th birthday. This year’s celebration took place at the AME Church. Ledwaba has been celebrating her birthday as a public event annually from when she was still the mayor.
Disadvantaged learners benefit from charity cycling tour Andries van der Heyde Disadvantaged learners remain a reality in Limpopo and across South Africa, which is why various cyclists took to the roads in February, to help lessen the burden on these learners by raising awareness and funds. The Salaam Foundation and Salaamedia #Riding4SAeducation are the main campaigners behind this initiative, aimed at boosting awareness and to support disadvantaged schools without proper resources. A group of riders set out on Sunday, 11 February, from Polokwane with the objective to cover 1 162 km from Limpopo to North West and then round off the tour in Gauteng. The group made a pit stop at Bela-Bela on Wednesday, 14 February, and was refreshed by the generosity of spirit of the local business community, before they set off again. Regular riders throughout the provinces were encouraged to ride along with the group. Azhar Vadi, the founder of Salaamedia, has first-hand experience in humanitarian crises and worked with the organisation, Gift of the Givers, when he travelled with the latter to the Middle East. Vadi brought the concept of humanitarian journalism to South Africa to help with the
support of others, bring hope to those in need, according to a statement. One rider, Cornelius Robbertse from Pretoria North, said he initially thought the group was asking him for directions when he met them along the road. It did not take long for him to grab his bike and ride along. “Every day was a race on its own, but the atmosphere within the group was great. We did it for the kids who need support the most,” he said. Although riders could have entered for a 35 km or 15 km ride along, others decided to extend it. Robbertse said at the time of their arrival at Bela-Bela, he had done 192 km. The group is expected to finish its journey on Saturday, 24 February, in Lenasia, Johannesburg. On the following Sunday a mountain bike race was also scheduled to take place at the same venue. The funds raised during the campaign would be passed on to the African Muslims Agency, Nyota Agency, the Al Ihya Foundation and the Islamic Relief South Africa, who would allocate the money to schools in need. Local schools benefiting from the initiative include Ulando Combined School, Hleketani Primary School, Albert Luthuli Primary, Madressah School, Little Darling Pre-School, as well as the Malebone Primary School.
Last year Salaamedia and the foundation, under the same banner, sponsored 1 000 pairs of school shoes, 2 500 stationary packs, school uniforms, hundreds of reusable
sanitary pads and computer equipment to various needy schools. For more information on this initiative visit www.salaamedia.com

Who among you remembers the good ol’ days? Internet, oh damn internet! We arrived at the office Monday morning to find the internet running on a snail’s pace. It must have been a frustrating start to the business of the day for the likes of the reporters, namely Mzamane Ringane, Lizzy Bapela, TK Mashaba, Andries van der Heyde, and Justin Steyn. And oh, talking about Justin, the young man shall be spending his last days with us in the newsroom next week, drifting away into new pastures. But I digress. Monday week, as I observed earlier, started on the pace of a chameleon in terms of access to the internet. For me this brought back memories of the newsrooms of days yonder, when we did not have internet. A couple of months ago a selection of us were nudged to contribute to an anthology of essays, tracing back our journey as veteran journalists. My own memories were of a time when I reported on soccer matches, between Pretoria Bantu Callies and the likes of Moroka Swallows Big XV, for the now defunct Rand Daily Mail, mainly at Lucas Moripe Stadium, in Pretoria. The latter venue was known as Super Stadium, with the home team, Pretoria Bantu Callies, featuring the likes of the self-same “Masterpieces” Moripe, after whom the stadium has been renamed. Importantly, I also traced back my
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Johnny Masilela
boyhood memories in the Pretoria township of Mamelodi, when we used to take the sub-urban train from the local Eerste Fabrieke railway station, headed for the creme de la crème soccer at Super Stadium. Without taking away the soccer flair of the likes of “Bantala” Shigo and “Frelimo”
Dibetla, the main drawcard at Pretoria Bantu Callies was Moripe, he of the socalled twinkle toes. On the local front at Bela-Bela, Cisco Maphokga and Paul Maphokga also played soccer in Atteridgeville, for the most feared Pretoria All Stars. As a wannabe sports reporter, I used to cover these soccer matches, dash into a telephone booth, and relate paragraph by paragraph the match report to dictate-phone operators at the Mail headquarters in Johannesburg. As part of my essay, I also touched on my close proximity to the likes of the Mail’s political desk, which included, among other luminaries, the late Zwelakhe Sisulu (son to Walter) and Helen Zille (Western Cape Premier). Thomas “TK” Kwenaite, now a soccer commentator with Supersport, traced back memories of his own time at the Mail, whereby we were both cub reporters. Molefi Mika, the erstwhile sports editor at the Sowetan, travelled back memory
lane to the days when we were both incubated by the late father of black journalism, Doc Bikitsha. Bra Doc was the first journalist from the great Drum writers recognised by Mandela, when he emerged from prison. The late Belede Mazwai (neé Vabaza), the mother to music sensation, Thandiswa Mazwai, was with me and Molefi on a journalism course facilitated by the Thomson Foundation of the United Kingdom. In his brilliant essay, Thabo Mooke, now publishing editor at Sosh Times, captured the moments when the late Bophuthatswana President Lucas Mangope, was escorted into the studios at Bop TV to declare the crushing of an abortive coup by one Rocky MelebaneMetsing.

Ally Pole for Marakele Marathon
Troublemakers FC continues winning streak
Lizzy Bapela Modimolle’s well-known athlete and principal at Rooiberg Itireleng High School, Ally Pole, will lead a group of athletes from Modimolle, who will be taking part in this year ’s Marakele Marathon. Thabazimbi’s Marakele National Park is already counting down to this year’s race, which will be taking place on Saturday, 3 March, at the local park. With just less than a month to go, preparations were well underway for the annual race, which has been dubbed “the run on the wild side.” The marathon is organised by SANParks in partnership with Thabazimbi Marathon Club. SANParks northern region spokesperson, Divhani Maremba, said since its inception, the marathon has seen remarkable growth with over 700 people participating in the 2017 race. The event has targeted upwards of 1 000 participants for the 2018 leg of the popular race. “The atmosphere in the park as well as the terrain all make this race stand out,” Maremba said.

BBCF flexes muscles to help destitute Lizzy Bapela The Bela-Bela Community First (BBCF) pressure group went on a charity drive when it assisted a destitute family in Hlalampsa Section. It all started after the group stumbled into a lost girl child,
in the streets of the township at Bela-Bela. BBCF used a loudhailer through the streets, in a desperate attempt to locate the lost girl’s family. Another girl of the same age came forward, and identified the lost child. The girl who identified the lost child explained to the BBCF that
she had known the lost girl because the latter and her family had often begged for food from her own family, among others. The victim’s family was traced back to Hlalampsa, where the BBCF leadership was met with the shocking reality of a family living in inhumane conditions.
In Mookgophong, Junior Stars FC was billed to host Rapotokwane Qualitho FC at the Mookgophong Grounds. The Rapotokwane Qualitho FC lads were still oozing confidence following the team’s 3-0 victory over Modimolle Celtic FC. The limping Celtic FC was scheduled to welcome Bela Bela Pirates FC, who last week narrowly beat Opleft United FC 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller. Bussel FC, which played to a 1-all stalemate with Bela-Bela Diesel N Dust FC last weekend, will this weekend host Vaalwater’s Boys 2 Men FC at Tankeng Sports Grounds. In other weekend results, Boys 2 Men FC claimed maximum points on a walkover against Modimolle Home Defenders FC.
